My katana has a name. No real reason other than a level of attachment to a weapon that has gotten me through many battles.

That is... a fair enough reason. Most objects that I own are breakable and replaceable, or not physically as valuable as the memories attached to them. Losing them cannot take the memories away.

Most people tend to replace their tools for better ones, or they break and they get new ones. For me though, I have been carrying this katana in its current form for more than a decade. Hard not to create a level of attachment after that long.

Hm, maybe that's an Earth thing. Or maybe more of a Human thing. I've never considered naming anything that I use as a tool, even if I grew attached to them. They were always just considered mine, no name required to make them unique.

Different strokes for different folks I suppose. Truth be told, the name of my katana was something I came up with when I was younger and it kinda stuck.

Oh, so the name itself is old as well. In the...culture that I grew up in, names were something the creator gave to what they made, and renaming it was like taking away a part of its origin. In that mindset, no tool truly belongs to me unless I created it personally. Most tools and designs in this world are simply borrowed and passed on.

Most folks named their weapons back in Remnant too. Makes them more personal.

That is an interesting perspective on it. As far as I am aware, most people here only named their weapons if they had a level of attachment to them. I suppose making them yourself would help with that.

@Qrow Branwen Did they consider their weapons as something beyond a means to an end?
@Genji Shimada It's been a while since I was last taught this, but naming a creation was considered a "duty" of some sort. A spiritual responsibility to the thing you made. Once it is made, all sense of attachment tended to end. My culture valued being less attached to physical things in general.

That seems to be a very buddhist approach

That's an Earth religion, right? I admit that I've never looked into them much.

Yes, that's one of the more popular religions in my country. I recommend that you look it up, it might resonate with you a little.

The smart ones do. A huntsman or huntress' weapon is their partner in battle. Your life and others' lives rely on the quality of your relationship with it. After creating one from scratch and living with it every day, it becomes almost like a child to you-- and it deserves a name like one, in my opinion.

@Genji Shimada Maybe I will. Not sure how well it'd mesh with the rest of my lifestyle though.
@Qrow Branwen You're right, that it something deserving of a name. I'm not much of a creator, I just take what's given to me or what I can acquire on my own.
