Deacon was rarely on the receiving end of outlandish tales that were hard to believe. It was usually him telling people that he had almost been killed by hundreds of synths, or that the nearby location was a well-known deathclaw nest.

He let out some hesitant laughter, mumbling, "right, that's... there's no way that that's true." He tried to examine her face for any sign of deception, but was coming up with nothing. For all he knew about Pandora, there were even worse things than gods.

When that occurred to him, he flinched slightly, which hurt, but that didn't even matter as he was low-key freaking out. "This place...?" he stuttered, "people really just live next to gods and that's it? Just business as usual? 'Hey God, fancy running into you here'? How does anyone not just turn into a huge pile of sweat?" Sure, if Deacon interacted with a god, his instincts would probably take over, leading him to mess with them like everyone else, but that just made him more worried. He knew what kind of asshole he could be.

Fang's smile faltered, guilt finally starting to overtake amusement. Deacon seemed more than merely uncomfortable with the idea that Pandora was home to not only monsters, but monstrous beings that walked and lived among ordinary humans. Funny, given he wasn't ordinary himself. If Fang was reading him right, he was actually scared.

"Ah... You don't have gods where you're from, I'm guessing?" She tilted her head, the question coming out gentle. "Or maybe your gods are the hands-off type? My world, Gran Pulse, had plenty of gods—or beings close enough to gods—living right on the earth with the rest of us, keeping things running. The village where I grew up even had one as our guardian. Anima wasn't something to fear, as long as you gave him the proper respect."

Fang paused, her eyes darting to the frosted brand on her shoulder. "... Sure, he could be demanding at times, and a little unreasonable with the things he wanted us to do for him, but that's no different than any other parent." She chuckled. "Heh. He was kinda human that way.

"As for how we on Pandora deal with things too scary to understand... We just do. For better or worse, this," Fang nodded at the pinprick dot of a city just starting to become visible in the distance, "is our life now. Figuring out how to deal with the strange and unfamiliar's not easy, but we take it one day at a time. After a while the pieces fall into place. Look, there are people who've been here for years, living in the presence of those gods and monsters I just told you about, and they're still doing just fine. You're gonna be fine."

"If there are any gods in my world, they are definitely hands-off," Deacon confirmed, "or they get their shits and giggles out of watching people ruin the world." Most people he knew gave up on the whole 'religion' thing when the world was reduced to a pile of ash. Except for the crazies worshiping stuff like atoms, but that was a whole different kettle of fish.

As Fang explained what her world was like, there was a brief pang of jealousy that went through Deacon. God-like beings that gave enough of a shit to want people to not die? That could've been useful before the War. No need to be snippy at Fang, though. It wasn't like she decided who was born where, so instead he decided to joke some more.

"Well, that's the thing about humans," he commented, "you're infectious like that. Spend too much time with you and things like me start gaining empathy, or a need for freedom." He would drop the con when it was pulled from his cold, dead hands.

Or when it was impossible to keep up. One or the other.

"Right, just go with the flow," he said with a nod, "there are worse ways to deal with all this." He took a deep breath, which hurt slightly but he powered through and said, "well, that's something I've always been doing, so I guess I can handle that."

Fang didn't miss the extra tension that clutched at his frame when he breathed, a sign that he still felt some lingering pain. Or it might be that she'd pushed too much conversation, the combined shock of physical injury and distressing truths about this new world overtaxing what remained of Deacon's stamina.

"That's the spirit," she encouraged. "You're a survivor. Got the proof right here."

Fang leaned over with arm and finger extended, motioning as if to poke him in the stomach, but didn't actually touch. Her brief grin faded to a look of concern.

"Still, you're getting paler by the minute. Why don't you sit back and relax? We're making good time to Pandora Town anyway, and once we get there, all the excitement and wonder of your new home won't wait for you to catch your breath."

For good measure, Fang tossed Deacon another Cure. Her shoulder and hand lit in shades of cool blue as the magic flowed over to him, a soothing presence searching for signs of general exhaustion to push away.

"Yeah, next time anyone tries to scare me again, I can just lift my shirt," Deacon joked, "if they're not terrified by the dad-bod, the scars will get my point across." It wasn't like the battle with the Brotherhood left the most terrifying scar, anyway. Traveling with Sole led to some interesting encounters with ghouls and deathclaws and all manner of nasty beasts. The zigzag of claw marks from when the stimpaks left a little behind were proof that he had gone through a lot.

"Right, might as well just enjoy the ride," he said, keeping his eyes on the horizon to keep himself from looking down. "So what's the in-flight movie?" he asked with a smirk, "something I can watch while snacking on my complimentary peanuts."

His smile became somewhat gentle as Fang used her healing spell. While he usually didn't like being genuine, he couldn't help but say, "well, if more people have magic like that, I think I'll be able to handle it. Nice useful stuff so people don't have to suffer."

She returned his smile, pleased with the sentiment. There were some good people here, yeah. Pandora itself almost demanded it, requiring the kidnapped work together to carve out new lives in this strange world. Cooperate to survive, or... don't. There were some bad folks too, falling back on stealing and hurting to get what they wanted, but in Fang's experience those people were few and far between.

And if they showed themselves to Fang, she'd be delighted to make their numbers even fewer.

She laughed quietly. "You'll have to be satisfied with the nature channel. But I've got some jerky if you're hungry. Or need refueling, whatever." Fang pulled a small cloth bag from her belt and tossed it to Deacon. "Don't worry, it's nothing strange. Unless you don't have beef where you're from."

After that, Fang lapsed into mostly silence, though if Deacon asked anything else, she'd give quick, noncommittal answers so that he could get back to resting like he was supposed to. The patch of green she'd found him in was left far behind, the landscape below now just a vast white emptiness broken up by patches of bare trees, sometimes a frozen puddle here and there. The sun glinted off the towers that rose in the north, metal spires and a wall growing larger as Bahamut steadily closed the distance.

Fang had Bahamut touch down just beyond the edge of town, close enough that the guards patrolling the outskirts would see them, but far enough that no one would get excited and try to shoot them down. She slid off Bahamut's back, sighing and stretching her sore muscles like a cat up from her nap, and slapped the Eidolon's side in gratitude.

She tilted her chin at Deacon. "I'll have a talk with the guards, get them to send somebody to escort you. Don't steal Bahamut while I'm gone, okay?"

Of course Deacon was used to people being complete bastards, even in a place where cooperation would lead to a much higher quality of life all around. The very fact that Fang was willing to make sure Deacon was alright said a lot of good things about her character, as far as his experience taught him to see in people.

Watching the nature channel meant looking at the surroundings, seeing the Earth moving underneath him. Not something Deacon was really excited to do. He wasn't quite sure if he was able to even eat while so high up, but he was pretty starving so he didn't really have a choice.

"Yeah, we've got beef," he confirmed, pulling out some jerky to snack on, "comes from cows with two heads, but other than that, probably exactly the same." As he chewed, however, he noticed that it was different, in that it was much more delicious than practically anything he had ever eaten.

With the kind of self-control being a spy required, Deacon was able to chew on the tasty treat without scarfing it down like it was his first meal in months. He was so busy enjoying the taste, though, that he didn't really notice how quiet Fang was being.

By the time they made it to the outskirts of Pandora Town, he felt himself drifting off slightly. He worked to keep himself awake, just in case, but he almost didn't notice that the ride had stopped.

Only almost, as when Fang explained that he was getting an escort into the city, he nodded and chuckled at her little joke. "Aw, but we've been bonding so much, I'm pretty sure he's about to declare me his new best bud," he joked back.

Fang planted her hands on her hips, amused. "Oh, did I forget to mention? You gotta win a fight to the death first before he lets you call him his friend. Real high standards, this one." A beat as she let that sink in, then Fang patted Bahamut again. "He got better."

The Eidolon let his wings fold to his sides as he relaxed, but otherwise remained silent.

    "Anyway, I won't be long."

And she wasn't. The guards, having seen the dark dragon-like beast sweeping through the nearby skies, sent a small squad out to investigate. Fang met them halfway across the field and, after promising that her lance and her 'monster' had only peaceable intentions, explained the situation, putting emphasis on the double urgency that she had someone who was both very new to Pandora and also very injured. They relayed the message, assuring Fang that help was on the way. She left them with her thanks and returned to Deacon with a wide smile.

"Got a vehicle on the way to see you to the hospital." She jabbed a thumb over her shoulder at the guards still waiting and watching in the distance. "You're in good hands. The people here helped me back onto my feet when I first arrived here, too."

Somehow, Fang's revelation was a surprise to Deacon. After everything he had experienced, he had no reason to be surprised, but he was. Perhaps he was only able to believe in Sole's existence because he fought right beside them for so long that he had to accept that some people were able to be that combat capable.

He forced a laugh, hoping to hear Fang retract the statement, but instead, she just claimed he 'got better'. "Oh," he said, "well, good to know." At least by 'better' he hoped she meant that he wasn't in the mood to start trying to kill people. He seemed pretty neutral at the moment, so Deacon decided not to push his luck and just sat back as Fang left, drowsing slightly.

The sound of Fang's voice jarred him back to reality when she announced that she had found a ride back into town. "Right, thanks," he said, "you really went above and beyond helping me out. I appreciate it, really."

Fang waved away his thanks. "Don't mention it. I couldn't just leave you to bleed out in the fields. It'd ruin the view. And who knows what you'd do to the stomach of the poor critter that thought he'd found a free meal."

The promised vehicle arrived inside of ten minutes, a silver and white van pushing across the drift, a cheerful honk of its horn announcing its arrival. Fang caught sight of the driver behind the windshield; the woman at the wheel eyed Bahamut with a skeptical look, but Fang beckoned her to drive closer with a winsome smile. The van pulled up alongside them, and the rear doors opened to let two men in pale uniforms hop out into the snow.

The taller of them swung his gaze from the stretcher in the back of the van to Deacon sitting on Bahamut's back, looking mostly fine despite the big dark stain across his stomach. He scratched his head.

"Well, you're not exactly in the dire straits we were told, but let's get you to the hospital anyway." He turned to Fang. "You can ride in the front if you're okay with leaving your, uh... pet here. I don't know that there's a place to park him if you'd planned to fly in."

"I'm leaving my friend to you guys, actually," Fang replied with an easy smile. "I got things to do, and sitting at his bedside crying my eyes out with worry ain't one of 'em. Take good care of him for me! I'll visit later."

The other medic nodded. "Right, will do. Ok, buddy," he gestured to Deacon, offering a hand in case the man needed help. "Whenever you're ready."

Deacon let out a laugh, strong enough to cause another twinge of pain, and nodded. "Right, of course," he said, "That synth component would cause some major indigestion for a poor bird." While the kinds of animals he was used to would have no problem eating a Gen-3 synth, it seemed that the animals that weren't fighting their friends to the death weren't so good at eating literally anything.

Eventually the guards showed up, ready to drive Deacon in the first working car he'd ever seen in his life. He didn't have time to marvel at that, though, as the discussion of how the group were getting back to the hospital began.

He wasn't too surprised to hear Fang was leaving; she hadn't struck him as the bedside weeping type. Once she knew he was in good hands, she'd get to work doing important things. Really, Deacon could respect that kind of attitude.

He vaguely waved when she said she'd be leaving, and called, "just gotta cry with worry somewhere else? I see how it is." He barely managed to sound offended through his smile, "fine then. Just leave me to die in the hospital."

He hesitated briefly, reaching out to grab the outstretched hand as he slid down from Bahamut. There was an obvious grimace on his face, but other than that, he seemed relatively stable; when ignoring the swaying, of course.

"There are worse places to die," Fang replied. The banter sounded unconcerned enough on the surface, but the words had a hard edge to them, mirrored by the sharp twitch of her smile.

She traded places with Deacon, pulling herself up behind Bahamut's neck as the medics took over. There was a restless energy in the Eidolon, her partner dissatisfied to have been kept so long on the ground when there was neither foe to fight nor sky to soar through. Fang sent him a mental apology for the idleness.

"Take care, Deacon." A tap of her fingers to her temple, a mock salute.

Then Bahamut flapped his wings, a mighty gust kicking them up into the air. Pandora Town and its outskirts shrunk quickly in her view, the van small enough now to fit in her palm. Fang would linger to see them drive back inside the gates before she had Bahamut carry them southward. She placed her hand fondly on the top of his head.

"Sorry about the detour, sweetheart. Now, where were we?"
