Private A long road

Discussion in 'Myrtle Beach and the Shimmering Sea' started by Arthur Pendragon, Feb 11, 2018.

    @Bellamy Blake

Arthur was not enjoying his time around Pandora. He had made the decision to leave Cascade Bay, but he hadn’t really had a plan beyond that. He had heard of other settlements around this world, and maybe he could find somewhere where he could find how to get home, or there might even be others from his world trapped here. Regardless, he had found opportunity and hope more fruitful with leaving Cascade Bay rather than staying. He had felt like he was becoming too entrenched into a routine there and that was the opposite of what he wanted. He had to get back to Camelot and back to his father. He couldn’t imagine what the kingdom was like in his absence, or what his father’s rage might be like.

Breathing slowly, he looked on the path ahead. He needed water. His flask had long since run dry and he knew he needed to get more soon. He needed a cool running stream, that was what he needed. Arthur ran his hand through his hair, ruffling the edges slightly as he continued walking. He’d been walking all morning and he didn’t feel as though he was realistically getting far. This was so infuriating. It was even making him miss Merlin.

Another half an hour passed before Arthur was greeted by anything but trees when he stumbled upon what looked like a sort of settlement. There were obvious signs of people living here. Arthur lingered on the edge of the settlement; he knew bandits operated in the area so he didn’t want to just hand himself over; his hand was on the hilt of his sword. He crouched down a little, keeping his shoulders low so he could get an idea of what was happening in the camp.

Settlement was probably a poor name for what they were. There were a grand total of three of them on good days, with the occasional person coming and going. And they were okay with that. It wasn’t ever what Bellamy had expected, but he hadn’t expected Tall Bird to come into he and Nancy’s lives either. But, hell, Nancy probably liked the idea of somebody else being around to keep Bellamy company when she couldn’t.

Night would be upon them in a few hours and the chill in the air was gradually growing as the temperature started to drop. Bellamy had just finished collecting firewood and was coming back toward the edge of the camp, the stone building that had become such a central spot in the tiny encampment coming up ahead. But that was when he spotted him, a head of blonde hair on the very edge of the clearing. He was being cautious. Sneaky.

In situations like this, Nancy probably would have suggested a different route than the one he was about to take, but Bellamy was a cautious individual as well. And shit like this set him on edge, so he slowly crouched to the ground, putting down the pile of wood he’d gathered and started quietly in the direction of the young man. Eventually, he was behind him several feet and he slowly pulled out his gun, lifting it about halfway in warning.

“Turn around slowly,” he finally said, his voice breaking through what was silence beside the sounds of nature around them.

  3. The camp seemed well established. The question would be what type of people were here. Pandora had tempered his instincts for this type of thing, whereas in Camelot people camped out like this might only have bad intentions, in Pandora settlements seemed to appear wherever people were. Arthur could feel how dry the inside of his mouth was, he wondered if he could just beg some water before continuing on. The weather here was much warmer than he had been used to in Camelot where typical weather had been rain or worse in the long winter months.

Arthur was still deciding on what to do when he heard the mans voice behind him. He grimaced and considered fleeing but he had seen the weapons of the people here. Where only a crossbow or bow might bring down a man from a distance in Camelot, here there were lots of new weapons which Arthur had little comprehension of. As he turned slowly, raising his hands as he assumed the man would want him to do, he caught sight of such a weapon. Arthur regarded him for a moment; he was a few feet away. Arthur was not sure of the strengths of the man's weapon, and so could not be sure what advantages he did have, should things turn nasty.

"I mean you no harm." He said, both his hands up, having now released the hilt of his sword.

    Wow.

As the guy slowly turned, lifting his bare hands innocently in the air, Bellamy took in the sight of him. He was literally medieval, like he'd stepped out of one of those renaissance faires he'd read about while he'd been growing up on the Ark. Not that he'd never been exposed to different people from different times, but crap like this never ceased to amaze him. Not really in the awe-filled way, though. Someone needed to seriously give this guy an upgrade. After all, that sword could probably be compared to a stick when facing his gun. It hadn't been so different with the grounders. Automatic weapons had wiped them out.

But this guy wasn't a grounder. None of them were. Or all of them were, that was what Bellamy told himself whenever he found himself warring with his own mind about supernatural creatures, too. He liked to think it helped a little.

"What are you doing here? What do you want?" he asked, never once lowering his gun despite the fact that the other man was effectively surrendering. He wasn't a grounder. None of them were grounders. But they had precious supplies here. Precious people. Bellamy couldn't be too careful, there was no such thing.

  5. Arthur wasn't a stranger to this kind of situation. In fact, he'd go as far to say he'd probably suffered worse in the past. However, usually he had someone here to help him out of the situation, or to at least prattle on to him while he was suffering. Merlin usually took up that particular role for him. Arthur's arms weren't starting to ache but holding them in the same upward position was slightly uncomfortable, especially when it was under these types of circumstances. He knew that even if he made a grab for his sword the man's projectile weapon would have him dead in a pool of blood in seconds. In times like this, he had to fight down his pride. Survival was his aim in Pandora; he had to survive for the good of his people.

"Water." He answered truthfully, "I was trying to find a stream and came across your camp." Arthur had considered lying, but there was little point in it. He had never seen the man before; he had not been seeking him out intentionally, nor did he really wish to be in his company any longer than he had to be. "Can I put my arms down?" He asked casually, looking around now to see if there was anyone else popping up out of the forest. He couldn't see anyone, though he knew enough of his land to not rely on his sense of sight in these matters.

Water. It was a simple enough answer and Bellamy thought he believed him, he really did. There was a certain cautious earnestness to the way that he said it, but that didn't mean the dark-haired man was going to put down his weapon. Not yet.

"Drop your weapon," he said, gesturing to the sword at the blonde's side with one brief but firm nod of the head. He wasn't an idiot. Bellamy knew he had the upper hand, but he also knew that a grounder with nothing more than a sword could create some chaos the second they had the chance.

He wondered how Nancy would have felt if she saw the scene. Maybe she would have thought it was harsh, but Bellamy thought he was being reasonable. There had been a time his instinct would have been to shoot, but that had been a different time, a different man. This was different. This was caution and a need to protect the people who had wandered their way to this place. And maybe this man was the same. Or maybe he wasn't.

  7. Arthur wished he'd had someone to go through this situation with, rather than feeling like his life was hanging on a rather thin knife edge. It all really relied upon whether this person decided to shoot or act like a reasonable person. While Arthur was always an advocate of being cautious, this felt a little too much as it was clear that he wasn't an actual threat, not against that kind of weapon anyway.

He raised his eyebrow at the man, wondering why he was being expected to get rid of his sword. It wasn't like he had any way of just getting the sword to fly up into his hand. Arthur pressed his tongue to the inside of his mouth and sighed a little before taking one hand and taking the hilt of his sword. He took it from where it was at his belt and threw it off to the side, a couple of paces away. He didn't put his hand back up straight away and looked across at the man, wondering what ridiculous redundant task he was going to ask him to do next before he could just continue on his quest for water. "Happy?"

What seemed ridiculous to Arthur was second nature for Bellamy. Caution in general was second nature. He’d been through a lot. Some of the other people here had been through a lot, too. Once the sword was on the ground a few paces away, Bellamy edged those few paces from the blonde, still keeping his eyes on him even as he bent to pick it up, sheath and all.

“Happy’s a strong word,” he remarked, and while that statement sounded perfectly serious, he eventually allowed a faint smirk to make its way to his lips. Lowering his gun and holstering it again, he gestured vaguely. “We’ve got water. Come with me.”

Leading the way deeper into the encampment, he side-glanced the blonde. “It’s not personal. We’ve been through a lot.”

  9. Arthur watched him with raised eyebrows as he retrieved the sword. He had the impulse to try something, but he'd seen that weird weapon he was holding work before. Arthur knew he wasn't quick enough to dodge that bullet. While he felt humiliated, that was much better than being dead. He was no good to Camelot if he was dead in a foreign place like this. So, he bit his tongue and lowered his arms when the man lowered his gun.

"Thank you." He managed. He was nothing if not courteous, even when he felt like it was not really reciprocated or deserved. However, he was in desperate need of water. Arthur fought down the bile he felt in his throat at being so reliant on other people. In Camelot he at least felt like he'd had some control over what he did moment to moment; Pandora seemed to keep pushing him down.

Arthur felt it all incredibly personally, but was trying not to let it show. He nodded curtly and eyed the camp with curiosity. "I understand." And he did. Camelot was a land where they were suspicious of neighbours and where they had learned the hard way what happened when they let enemies cross borders or take advantage of treaties. "Is this where you live?"

"Some of us. People just sort of started wandering in one day, and some of them stuck around," he told him. "Others come and go." He and Nancy were the only ones who had been there from the start, and Bellamy didn't really know how to explain what had happened. He didn't really know why he was explaining it to the stranger in such detail either. Maybe because, despite all of his caution, the blonde didn't seem much like a threat.

"What are you doing out here?" he asked. Truth be told, they didn't get a lot of people passing through these woods. "You don't live in one of those towns?"

  11. Arthur followed the man into the camp. It looked very make-shift, like some of the camps he had raided on the outskirts of Camelot. However, they looked quite settled here which was the difference. Arthur wasn't looking for any other reason than being mildly interested, and to divert away from the man's gaze. "Why have you chosen here to live?" He asked casually, not really thinking about how personal a question it might be. To him, it was questionable why they would have chosen to live here, rather than one of the other towns. They were hypocritical thoughts coming from him of course; someone who had lived out in the forest rather than stay in Cascade Bay any longer.

"No, I did stay in Cascade Bay for a time, but I've been travelling around for the last few weeks." He explained, but he had found it difficult to function there and had taken it upon himself to leave to see what else this world had to offer.

The explanation of Cascade Bay made a lot of sense to Bellamy if not because a lot of them had done the same. Settled in one of those towns and then found that it wasn't right for them. They didn't belong, or somebody made sure they didn't belong. Who knew which it really was. Bellamy wasn't even sure he knew anymore.

"A lot of us started out other places, too," he explained. "Pandora Town. Morhall. A couple were originally from Cascade Bay, too, I think. Some of us didn't like what we saw. Some of us were driven out. And now, here we are." Bellamy tried to mask the bitterness in his voice. There was something very personal about the explanation, about remembering what it had felt like to leave Morhall. It had been different from the day he and Negan had left Pandora Town. That had been hopeful, in a way. Leaving Morhall hadn't been hopeful.

  13. Arthur's eyes narrowed on Bellamy. Whereas he had chosen to walk out of Cascade Bay, chasing the idea of seeing what this world had to offer, he sensed something deeper in this mans words. Arthur had bored of the monotony of working and returning to an empty hut at the end of the day. It wasn't him; he was used to having more in his life and more in his time. He had just packed up one morning without really a word of warning to anyone and had taken off- he hadn't really made too much of an impact on the people there. He didn't expect to be missed.

"What do you mean, driven out?" He asked, losing some of the care his earlier words had taken. He had heard of the other towns he talked of, though he had not visited them as of yet. Arthur did have a curiosity to visit Pandora Town and Morhall, as well as the others at some point.

"I mean exactly that," he said, side-eyeing the blonde. "Someone deciding for the entire damn place that we don't belong." It was hard to keep the bitterness out of his voice as he was reminded of Ezekiel. King Ezekiel, as he called himself. The guy was a nutcase and a fucking bastard if Bellamy had anything to say about it. Strolling into Morhall and driving away the Saviors like he owned the place. Not even a peep from the other council members, not a single fucking word from Hawkeye or Mustang.

    "We do better governing ourselves."

  15. It didn't sit well with Arthur; they'd only ever driven those from Camelot who were a threat to its safety, like those who practised magic. That made sense to him, but how could it be justified to drive people from their homes when there wasn't anything in particular causing a problem? He narrowed his eyes at the dark haired man, hanging on every word. He liked to learn what he could about the people and governance of this land; he thought of it as some kind of apprentice time while he was waiting for whatever curse had lifted him here to take him back to Camelot.

"Do you prefer living out here?" He asked, curiously as it looked little in truth, compared to the structures he had seen so far in the more established towns.

"I prefer the people," he said. The place, he didn't know. He was used to surviving out in the woods like this and the threats had been significantly more back on Earth. Grounders, acid fog, the mountain men. Bellamy had been out here since December and surviving the low temperatures had been the trickiest part.

  17. Well he could certainly understand that. He was sure he could find these woods much more to his taste if his knights were here. As it were, he was having a difficult time adjusting to this world and his place in it. "How many of you is there?" He now asked, unable to really tell from the size of the settlement or the things collected there; he'd seen dozens of druids live in this kind of space and he'd also seen ten knights take up about the same amount of room so he didn't feel well able to judge it for himself here. Arthur of course was still thirsty and still following the man rather aimlessly, having fallen into a pleasant enough conversation.

"Eight," he told him, looking ahead again as they approached a stone building in the center of the encampment. "We're a small group, but everybody does their part. It's not just living out here, it's surviving out here, but the work is worthwhile." He disappeared briefly into the building, throwing the blonde a glance as though telling him to stay put, but he came back a moment later with a waterskin in his hands, filled to the brim, which he handed toward the other man.

"You can take it with you if you have to."

  19. Arthur did as he was bid, having no real reason to wander off for now. He looked around the encampment with a hum. It seemed nice enough; liveable? Possibly. He crossed his arms over his front, taking little for granted when it came to getting clean water. "Thank you." He said, taking a greedy sip of the water almost immediately. He had no plan of what to do or where to go after this, his only real thought had been on gathering water, though he accepted Bellamy's kindness. He wasn't sure how much longer he might have gone on without finding water if it hadn't been for this man. "There must be something I can do to repay your kindness?" Arthur said; he was nothing if not chivalrous and he would not accept help without offering something in return.

"Don't," Bellamy said suddenly, shaking his head as a faint smirk lingered there at the corner of his lips as he folded his arms over his chest and leaned against the building's doorframe. By then, Arthur's sword was at his belt. He'd get it back at some point. Lucky for him, they weren't exactly sword people. "We're not looking for any repayment. Just tell me who you are"
