    @Magnus Bane

Tina clicked her heels together as she left her apartment. She had two days off and she intended to use them well. She wanted to look around some of Cascade Bay tomorrow, but until then she had more business like matters to attend to. Since John Uskglass had appeared in their kitchen, she had been very concerned about the security of their flat. Now Credence had gone missing too she was more determined than ever to make sure that her home was safe and secure. She had sought help at the Mages Guild as there were lots of different people versed in all sorts of different magic and she had wanted a second opinion on the wards guarding her home. Really, she had wanted to seek out Newt but he had gone missing recently and no one had heard anything of him. Tina sniffed back because she didn't want to think about Newt being missing right now. She knew how this world worked, but it didn't make it any less painful to think that he wasn't around anymore. She just hoped nothing terrible had happened to him.

However, she couldn't sit around waiting for news, and ultimately, she was asking for someone else to also cast protective magic over the flat to make sure that she wasn't going to get anymore unwelcome guests. That was the most important thing to her right now. She had to do whatever it took to look after her sister and Modesty. They were her world in Pandora and she'd do anything to protect them; she'd done a pretty lousy job of looking after Credence and Newt so far, so she had to look after those she had left.

Fortunately, she had found a mage who had been interested in helping her out. She had known about Magnus from the guild but hadn't really had much to do with him. She had said she'd meet him on the corner of the flats in the Travoie District as that was where they all lived. Obviously the wards would have prevented him from appearing in her front room, so out on the street was probably the best option for everyone. With her hands in her pockets, she rocked back and forth on her heels, looking around for the first sight of Magnus.

Despite his ability to portal around Pandora, Magnus actually enjoyed taking the long way to get places by simply walking whenever he had the time for it. That wasn't often a luxury he provided himself, usually working in one place up until the last second because he knew that he could portal to where he needed to be next in the blink of an eye, but today he made the time to take the stroll through Pandora town's streets towards the Travoie apartments.

The weather was taking on a crisp fall chill and he wore a light black jacket with studded accents on the shoulders over top a deep burgundy dress shirt and layers of necklaces of varying length. His short nails were painted black on hands adorned with numerous silver rings. He spotted Tina waiting for him on the corner she specified and, as if his was the sort of appearance one could easily forget or mistake among passersby on the street, gave her a small wave as he approached.

He knew the goal here was to work on attempts of layering wards - she had up her own, but much like his own experience with using his own wards around his suite at the hotel, sometimes different magics from different worlds could bypass them. It was infinitely frustrating for the High Warlock of Brooklyn, and he imagined it was much the same case for Porpentina to think that the magic she was so used to relying on wasn't always enough here.

"I hope you weren't waiting too long," he said when he was close enough. "Seemed like too nice of a day to waste on portalling here."

Tina patted her hands against her waist on the inside of her coat. She hummed gently to herself as people passed her on the street. Thankfully she wasn't kept waiting for too long. She spotted Magnus from quite a distance away; he stood out quite spectacularly and she had to just smile at his sense of style and the confidence with which he wore practically everything. She knew, on the other hand, she looked incredibly plain but back at MACUSA the aim had been just fitting in with the No-Maj society because the last thing any of them wanted to do was to stir up No-Maj suspicion and make them think something funny was going on.

She imagined Madam Picquery's face whilst looking at Magnus. She couldn't imagine the president approving much of the way Magnus presented himself because he just looked as he should, and not like he was trying to fit in like the rest of them had. Even Newt had been a little too much for Picquery though, Tina thought. "I've only just got here." She answered honestly, "Thanks again for coming over Magnus, I really appreciate this." She figured that portalling must have been his version of apparating. She couldn't imagine what else he could mean in the context they had been presented with.

"My flat is just by this way," She gestured as she began to lead the way, "Where was it you walked from?" She asked curiously, plunging her hands back into her coat pocket.

"Oh, good." Magnus said, glad he hadn't kept her waiting too long. That, or she was lying to make him feel better, but he gave himself enough time to get here that chances were he was actually a little bit early for the time they agreed to meet at. He always overestimated how long going about things the long way would take, so used to the instant gratification of his usual magical shortcuts.

"It's no trouble at all," he said, following as she started to lead the way down the street towards her flat. That was what the Guild was for, after all - sharing what they knew and assisting each other when scenarios such as this one arose. He helped her now, and maybe someday in the future he might need her help in return. It was honestly such a welcome arrangement for a group of this nature, one he was pleased to see working so well here in this world. He wondered if such a thing would ever go over as well back in his world, where so many Warlocks almost exclusively offered their services in exchange for payments of a usually extravagant nature.

"I live in Silverpool," he said, gesturing vaguely in the direction he'd come from. "I run the Hotel Valentino, when I'm not helping out at the Schola." He knew that she did some teaching at Merlin's school, having seen her around a bit at the recruitment events over the summer as well as now that classes were in full swing for the fall.

Tina, having never needed to use a hotel, knew the name of the place Magnus was talking about but nothing else really about it. There had never been a reason for her to check into a hotel. She'd gone straight from the shelter when she had first arrived here to live with her sister and the kids, so there had never been much of a reason to even check out the local hotels. She was sure, with Magnus' personality and appearance, that any establishment run by him would be worth visiting and suitably decadent. "I've heard of it, but I've not been before." She said politely. "I work at the department of Intelligence when I'm not at Schola."

It wasn't a long walk to her home, she'd not picked to meet Magnus miles away from her address; they were only round the corner. So it didn't take long for them to be outside their apartment block. She stopped when they were just outside her address and pointed with her wand to their apartment. "My home is just that one." She said to Magnus, "Do you want to go in, or should we start out here?" She asked, as she wasn't sure which way round Magnus would want to do this.

"Department of Intelligence?" Magnus repeated, clearly sounding impressed by the information. "No wonder you aren't especially keen on people being able to get into your place." Not that this wasn't a legitimate concern for anyone to have, but for someone who may have access to sensitive files and documents he imagined it was an especially large concern. He was mostly surprised that she didn't have other sources in the government itself to come and do these sorts of things, but he supposed that the Mages Guild would probably be the best magical source still, even with the government's resources. After all, he'd seen the powers of some of the people there - he was willing to bet many of them rivaled his own skills, if not surpassed them, in a number of different areas.

The sorts of magic they were using at the Department of Magical Advancements probably weren't so focused on applications like home security.

"Let's go inside first," Magnus said, looking up at the apartment she pointed to. It was a few floors up and he would be able to get a better sense of things working from the inside out rather than trying to sort through things from down here. "Were you looking to do something about the entire building, or just your apartment in particular?" To cover one apartment would be simple - after all, he took the time to ward the majority of the Hotel Valentino for The Countess when she hired his services, and after the time and effort it took to get those up and stabilized something as simple as a single flat would be a breeze. To take on the entire building, while not impossible, would be something he may need to run by the complex's owner first, depending on the sorts of magic he decided to use.

Tina had always been awfully keen on privacy, especially with the state of things back home. It was good in a way to look a little more normal, and have people see her and Queenie walking into their New York apartment rather than just apparating to it. Gave them more of a cover and made people less suspicious. That was always the aim. "Actually, this guy transported himself into my kitchen a while back; he scared the kids we look after, so I'm really keen for it to now happen again." That was the priority, especially where Credence was concerned. She needed him to keep an eye on his powers and control the obsurus; that wasn't going to happen if they had weird people transporting into their home whenever they might feel like it.

Tina nodded and pushed open the door to the apartment block and began to lead Magnus upstairs. It was just her there today. Queenie was out at work and the children were at school. It was a rare day off for her so she was making the most of it. Tina shook her head at his question, "Mercy Lewis, not the whole building- just our apartment." She wasn't in a position to assume everyone here would want magical barriers up around their homes, but she for one did want them around her little family.

They arrived at the apartment quickly, and she pushed the door open. "This is our home. It's not much, but it's home."

Magnus scrunched up his face in a bit of a cringe at the idea of someone randomly teleporting into the middle of his own place without warning or invitation. He, too, valued his privacy, even though he didn't have anything in particular he needed to 'hide' from the public within the walls of his hotel penthouse. He could certainly see how it would frighten a child whose home is supposed to be the one safe refuse in a confusing world.

"Well then, let's make certain it doesn't." He replied, wishing he felt as confident as he sounded. He knew that he could put up the wards with no issues, of course, but he was honestly unsure how they would layer over the protection spells Porpentina already had up, as well as if even the both of them combined would be enough to keep everything in Pandora out. But it was at least worth the try to see.

They reached the apartment and Magnus took a quick look around. "It's lovely," he said, smiling. He never expected much, honestly, since the people of Pandora all arrived and started from nothing. It was difficult to build anything substantial up but there were obvious signs that Tina went out of her way to make the apartment feel more 'home-y', probably mostly for the sake of the kids she mentioned looking after.

After taking a moment to get a general feel for the place he lifted his hands up in front of him, palms out, sending a wash of golden-hued magic flowing over the walls, ceiling, and floor to sense out the magic already in place. "The spells you already have feel entirely different from the wards I'm used to," he told her, looking mildly fascinated by this entire process. "I think I should be able to layer the two... may I look through the rest of the rooms first?"

He just wanted to get a sense of the area he needed to cover, and if she'd done anything different with any of the other rooms, but he didn't want to simply go wandering into her home without expressed permission.

Tina was rather determined to not let anything like that incident with John happen ever again. It wasn't just a matter of privacy, it was in keeping the children and their situation calm. That was she needed. Back home, she had known that their wards had cast complete privacy. Here, perhaps it was a little ambitious to expect to block out all magic as she had no idea what a lot of people were capable of. However, they could try their best and do as best as they could.

She closed the door behind him, to keep the heat in the apartment. She watched him work curiously, looking at the gold on the walls with a gentle sense of awe. She was fascinated with the fact that he did not need a wand to conjure up such spells and talents. Tina knew she would be pretty useless without a wand; she had never mastered wandless magic. It was something few could manage. Tina always felt much more comfortable with her wand, regardless.

"Of course, there's no one else in, so you can roam as you want." She had checked the children had tidied up, but it appeared that Mary-Lou had instilled a sense of cleanliness about them. Tina pointed gently, "That way leads to all our bedrooms, then the kitchens down the hall to the left." They had a bathroom and a small sitting room. She felt incredibly lucky to have this big an apartment, "Still getting used to all the rooms; back in New York me and my sister only had the two." This was practically luxurious for her.

"Thank you." Magnus followed her directions, going down the hall towards the bedrooms first, performing the same small bit of magic in every room that simply allowed him to get a feel for the magic already in place. It was so unlike his own that he wanted to be extra cautious about mixing the two, not sure how they would interact with one another, if they would interact at all.

So much about things in Pandora was unpredictable, with far different rules applying to even the simplest of things depending on what world someone might be from. He had no way of telling how Tina's magic would interfere with any wards he may put up, or vice versa, and the last thing he wanted to do was accidentally make the apartment any less secure than it was now by interfering with her magic.

No, this would be something he'd make sure he had a good feel for from room to room before attempting to do any real warding of his own.

"I'm glad to see you're doing well for yourself here," he said, commenting on how this apartment was much larger than the one she was used to. "And your sister, you said she's here too?" That was another thing about Pandora that fascinated him - how some people found others from their world, while others were the only ones. How the timelines never seemed to match. He wondered what the situation was like for Tina and those she lived with.

He'd been through the sitting room and bathroom, making his way towards the bedrooms next.

Tina was more than happy to show Magnus around the house. In a way, she was a little embarrassed at how simple their home was. Magnus was quite an eccentric person and she wasn't sure what he would make of their little house. Their home in New York had been a little cluttered but they had only really had two rooms and they had a bunch of family heirlooms and their general day to day things to keep there. Here they were almost spoilt for choice and she hadn't really gained a flair for decorating and filling the space.

"Mmhm." She said with a gentle nod of the head, "She's been here for longer than me though; it was a real shock when we ran into each other." It had been the best day here, truth be told. She had never felt so lonely as she had done in those first few days when she had been in Pandora. "And she'd adopted two kids who are from our time too." Which was very odd. She felt sorry for anyone who did not have anyone around them in Pandora. She couldn't imagine how hard it was to not have any family or friends at all. Queenie was all she really needed, but she loved having Modesty and Credence here because it meant that they could look after them in the way they should always have been cared for.

"These are the last of the rooms." Tina said as she gestured to the bedrooms at the end of the landing. The bedrooms looked quite practical. There was a little more in the children's room as they really wanted for nothing and they gave them whatever they could.

He reached the bedrooms last, allowing the same golden magic to flow from his hands out to the walls and ceiling of reach room, only for a brief moment as it washed over them and then vanished entirely. He didn't want to allow too much of his magic to exist here just yet, not until he was positive he knew how he wanted to go about adding protective wards to layer over the magic already in place. But the more time he spent here, even in these first few minutes, the more confident he grew that it wouldn't be that difficult to sort out.

"I was one of the first from my own world to arrive here," he said, relating to her story about the time spent here between her and her sibling. He knew Simon was around, but really he lacked anyone truly close to him for months until he found Alexander. "It's always such a mixed blessing to find others here. On the one hand I wouldn't wish anyone pulled out of their world that way... but I have to admit it is rather nice having a friendly face around." Life here was exponentially better now that he had Alec here, but at what cost? How were things in their own world, with so many of them trapped here in Pandora?

Those were thoughts Magnus was quick to shake from his head, focusing instead on the rooms he was in and the woman in front of him. "Alright. What sort of magic do you already have in place, exactly?" Have her describe it to him would probably be the most helpful. "You use a wand, correct?" It was difficult to remember from person to person sometimes, with everyone's skills being so incredibly varied here in Pandora.

Tina nodded at his words. It was right, really. She hadn't wished to see Queenie here because she knew how much she loved New York and being here meant she wasn't near Jacob. She knew her sister had still held a light for him despite MACUSA and their actions. However, it was nicer with her here because this way she wasn't alone and she could have a sort of life here. She had found herself more than once wishing to see Newt again but she knew it was ridiculously selfish. She wouldn't wish this kind of restriction on him, not when she knew he was so close to completing his book and publishing it. He had that whole future in front of him, and who was she to wish it away because of her whimsical fancy?

The magic Magnus was showing was incredibly impressive to Tina, she still found it fascinating that he did not have to use a wand. "Uh huh." She said, lifting her wand hand with the wand. "It was just some protective magic and barrier, I'm not sure how much of the trace of magic you've been able to pick up." She chewed on her lip, "The magic is quite simple incantations, all cast with this wand around a month ago now." She paused, "What else do you need to know?" She asked gently, unsure whether or not she had properly asked the question. She could go into the theories behind the magic she used, but she did not want to patronise him or assume what he did or did not know.

Magnus nodded, listening to her explanation of how the magic she used worked and what it was she'd done to the apartment. It fit what he felt when he'd poked at the walls and ceilings with his own magic. He was able to feel that whatever spells she already had in place were old enough that he had to prod a bit deeper than he first thought to find them, but that wasn't a bad thing. It meant that the magic was settled into the foundations of the walls it was used on, the protective spells making a home in the areas they were meant to protect.

"I think that's all I really need to know," he told her after a moment's consideration. "From what I can tell, I think I should be able to put my own protective barriers up over the walls, the wards acting almost like a coating over your magic, if that makes any sense." He could picture it visually in his head, the layering of the spells he described as if it were an actual physical layering rather than that of invisible magical effects, but that was just the easiest way to describe it.

"It'll reinforce what you already have in place, and with any luck cover some things that the magic from your own world might not even have." He knew that a lot of the demons that his particular wards were meant to protect against were entirely unheard of in other worlds, so that'd be one advantage; he was sure there were more than what he'd even stop to think of.

He waited to make sure that was what she wanted before going ahead with the plan.

Tina nodded as Magnus explained what he was going to do It made sense and in her head it just meant he was going to be layering up the different types of magic. She could imagine that being much more effective than just her one layer of magic after all. Tina really did hope this could keep most of the people out of her home. The last thing she wanted was anyone else to turn up on her doorstep and think that it was okay to just apparate into her living-room. She couldn’t run the risk of that happening again and so this was the best solution for the family.

“Um, do you want a coffee or something? We have plenty in.” She rocked on her heels. They didn’t have guests all that often and she wanted to leave the best impression. Even in New York, because of their landlady’s restrictions they never even hosted dinners or anything. So it was quite odd to have something to do something for in the flat. Here they had almost kept up with their New York habits, apart from a few exceptions. "It's a bit strange having someone even visit, actually." A little voice in the back of her head was begging her desperately to stop speaking but she couldn't help herself. In a way she felt like she had to fill the space.

Once he was certain that was the idea he had in mind would work for Tina, Magnus was already visualizing how to most effectively put his own magic into place. He could place it underneath her own, working as a backup, or over it, to serve as a first defense to break through... but he didn't think he could be able to weave the two together into a single layer of defense without the risk of damaging one or the other. As he considered, looking absently over the ceiling and walls as he thought, the offer of coffee reached him and he gave a small nod.

"That'd be nice, actually. Thank you." He never drank coffee regularly before living with Alexander, but now it was pretty much a daily staple for the couple. And it didn't take long for the comfort of the warm drink and the pleasant boost of the caffeine to grow on him as it became a regular part of his life.

Plus, it would give Tina something to do besides stand there and stare at him as he set to work. Not that he really minded, because it was her apartment, after all. And if their roles were reversed he'd probably want to watch the warlock adding magic to his own home with a close eye, making sure they didn't try anything shifty. But as the case was, he mostly didn't think it was anything worth watching. He set about the room he was in first, his magic flowing over the walls and ceiling and floor much the same way it had during his first pass through, only this time it was a dark grey color that came from his fingertips and spread to wash over every surface.

In the end he decided to put his own wards up over the magic already in place, so as to have the least possible effect on her own magic. If his simply rested on top it didn't have to pass through her own spells, and wouldn't risk damaging anything already there. Once he was done he made his way to the next room, though this process was going to take quite a bit longer than the original go-through...

Tina wasn't exactly trying to force the coffee on him; she wasn't all that good at hosting anyone as she just wasn't used to it. It had been too dangerous to have guests back in New York; she couldn't have handled having to be turfed out of that flat. When he said he'd have a coffee she nodded and went off to the kitchen to fix them both a cup. She'd had her last coffee with breakfast which had been a couple of hours ago now. It was no wonder she was feeling a little fatigued.

She popped on the kettle and used her wand to lower down the coffee off the shelf and grab the mugs from the hooks. As she did, she hummed to herself, nothing inventive, but a tune she had a vague memory of hearing in her youth. Once she had made up the coffee's she took Magnus his cup and held hers in her other hand. "Here you go, if you need sugar or anything I'll go grab it." She then said, realising she hadn't actually asked him how he wanted his coffee. Amateur mistake really.

"How's it looking?" She asked curiously but there was also an air of slight apprehension and anxiety about her words; she didn't want anyone else appearing in her home.

He was just finishing up with the second room when Porpentina came back with the drinks in her hand, only making her wait a minute or two before finishing up what he was doing. It probably would've been fine to stop, take a break, and finish up, but he didn't want to risk it - this was the for the safety of a family, after all, and he didn't want to take any unnecessary risks in disrupting the process if he could help it. The last of the ceiling covered he allowed the trail of magic, fading like a trail of smoke as it left his hands, disappear entirely for the time being.

"Thank you," Magnus said, taking the cup of coffee in hands that still vibrated slightly with the feel of his magic. It'd been quite some time since he used it this steadily - usually when necessity called on his abilities it was in small, but strong, spurts. Something slow and steady like this was always a good test of his abilities, though, to make sure he wasn't falling out of practice. He took a sip, the warm liquid bringing a bit of alertness to him again that he hadn't realized he began to lack as the use of his magic pulled at his energy.

"This is wonderful." He'd gotten more and more used to coffee having it always around for Alexander, and it didn't take him long to get used to the slight bite and bitterness that came with drinking it black. In fact, though he drank it much less frequently than his boyfriend, he preferred the taste of it this way when he did drink it.

"It's looking fine so far. I think it would work best to sit my own wardings on top of the spells you already have in place, acting as a sort of first defense. I'll see how it all looks at the end, but the first room went agreeably enough."

Tina wasn't all that used to making coffee. Usually it was Queenie who did that; it was just her who consumed a heck of a lot of it While she knew how to make her own brew, she had often been told she was rubbish at making it for anyone else. It was similar to her cooking ability; it left a lot to be desired. There was a certain way to brew coffee, so even if Magnus was just being polite, she still appreciated it. She took a sip of her own coffee as he took a sip of his. Tina wasn't all that sure what kind of magic he was putting up on their walls, but it would hopefully make it safer for them all long term. She had no idea how strong some people in Pandora were, so she wanted to be as prepared as she could be for her family. It was better to be proactive about these things, especially as her job gave her an insight into various workings of some high profile cases.

"Glad it's okay for you." She said softly, listening as he explained his first warding had been a success. That could only be good news, right? "Want me to get out your hair while you get on with it?" She asked considerately, knowing she could find some kind of chore to do while he looked at different rooms in their home. It wouldn't do to just stand here and stare like he was some kind of circus animal.

Magnus took another long sip of the warm coffee, taking the small break to give his magic a rest. This, he learned in Pandora, was not something that all magic users here had to deal with. The idea that his magic was limited to a certain degree, something he couldn't just use unlimited and unending without it weakening or failing him entirely, wasn't something that applied to all of the magic he encountered here. Honestly, it was the thing he most envied of all the different types of magic he learned about.

"It's up to you," he said with a small shrug. "I don't mind if you wanted to stick around - it's your house, after all. But I can imagine it might get boring just watching me for the next however long, and I'll be fine on my own." He knew the response wasn't much of a help, but he really didn't mind either way. It was her house, and her call if she wanted to keep a closer eye on what he was doing from room to room or whether she trusted him enough to let him go off and do his own thing until it was done.
