It was quiet, so quiet and for the moment Keith was alone, Shiro had taken his fellow paladins to find food leaving Keith alone at Hunk's bedside. The others had told him the yellow paladin had been particularly concerned for him before he'd passed out so Keith found himself wanting to be one of the first people Hunk saw upon waking just so he wouldn't panic about what may or not have happened. Besides he was still so exhausted physically and mentally, he didn't really want to do a lot but sit there in silence, his face a smooth mask. His mind kept running through the last few days, replaying it all over and over, he'd barely been able to sleep as his nightmares were only added too. Keith knew he looked like hell, bandages on his shoulder, plaster on the gaping wound to his face, pale, sickly, dark eyes from lack of sleep but for the moment in his dark pants and his black t-shirt, his heavily bruised neck hidden beneath a red neckerchief sat in the chair by Hunk's bed all curled up like a cat he was actually comfortable.

His blue, grey eyes fixed on Hunk's sleeping form a moment before drifting down to the guy's legs, he blamed himself for that, if he'd been quicker perhaps he could of prevented it from happening. If he'd believed the others sooner perhaps he could of stopped it from getting so far, but yet when he thought back to how he'd been made to stop it he could feel himself trembling slightly. His gaze shifted from Hunk to the wall on the other side of the guy's bed, he could feel the knife sinking into the others flesh, he could remember the look on his face, he could hear the rattle of his breath as he tried to speak. A noise drew him out of his dark thoughts, his gaze drifted from the wall to Hunk's face to find the guys eyes were open and as much as he wanted to say something, the words were suddenly stuck in his throat he didn't deserve to be there right then, it was his fault and on top of it all, he'd killed someone.

Consciousness came slowly, sluggishly. There’d been scattered moments when Hunk’s eyes had fluttered open and he’d groaned out a word or two, but they’d been few and far between and he’d drifted off to sleep almost immediately afterwards, forgetting he’d ever woken up in the first place. He dreamed of tinkering with machinery, of goodies baking in the oven. Of oceans and summer days, of his mother’s warm hugs and his father’s voice whispering in his ear.

Tumau malosi ma talitonu ia te oe lava, he'd say often when he'd been younger, while tucking him in and kissing him goodnight. Be strong and trust in yourself.

Slowly, Hunk’s eyes opened. Bright lights accosted his senses and he grimaced, squinting against the glare. He was staring up at a ceiling with several rectangular-shaped lights, like the sort of lights you’d find at school or in other public institutions. His confusion gave way to pain, a dull ache that stretched all through his legs.

    His legs.

Hunk’s eyes settled on them, widening at the sight of them. They were heavily bandaged -- or put in casts? -- and elevated above him, hanging from slings connecting to the ceiling. He was in bed, in... in a hospital bed. The others must have brought him here after...

Panic threatened to overwhelm him, a whimper making its way out of his throat before he could stop himself, but then he realized he wasn’t alone in the room. Keith was there, looking worse for wear but alive, gloriously alive.

“Keith,” he gasped, reaching for him. But of course, his hand didn’t quite reach Keith’s and he wasn’t in any position to start stretching his limbs in every direction. “Oh god, you’re okay. I’m so glad to see you, I was so worried.” His throat was dry, his words coming out like a croak, but that didn’t matter. None of that mattered when Keith was okay.

“Where’re the others? What did -- I mean, how -- how -- how did you bring me here? Is Shiro...?” Hunk remembered seeing Shiro, seeing how worried he’d been, but the memories blurred with Shiro’s cruel smile, with the words he’d spat out as he drove his heel into...

Hunk shuddered, forcing that memory into the back of his mind where it belonged. Keith, he’d... he’d focus on Keith. That was safe, right? But seeing the bandages around Keith’s shoulder, the plaster on his face and those hollow, dark-rimmed eyes, Hunk wasn’t so sure about that anymore.

Are you okay?” he asked quietly.

The noise Hunk had made before waking, he had not understood it, it had been foreign words to him. But now Hunk's eyes were open and on him Keith found himself staring at the other teenager wide eyed, the words lodged in his throat unable to find a way out, guilt pooling in his belly. But then Hunk was speaking, or more attempting to his voice came out a croak at first. He seemed pleased to see him or more relieved, at least for the time being. Hunk was reaching for him, unable to quite reach him and Keith tried to push his heavy body into action, shifting from his comfortable, cat like position on the chair. He took a grip on his chair with his good arm and pulled it closer to Hunk's bed, putting himself in a position by the guys head, beside the bedside table. He could hear Hunk still speaking, asking more questions, though seemingly unable to complete a whole question.

Now he was within Hunk's reach he steeled himself, ready to take his hand in a supportive fashion despite feeling he had no right when he was to blame for all of this. He was drawn out of his guilt ridden thought with a direct question at last, about him and startled he looked up from Hunk's hand to his face, surprise on his face. Then casually he was sighing saying"It's nice to know you're still you upon waking Hunk, because only you would be more concerned about me when you have two broken legs to contend with.." His voice held a mild bemusement to it, showing a brief moment of his dark humour and then reaching for the water jug on the bedside table he poured water into a little plastic cup, then shifting he took hold of Hunk's hand, wrapping it around the cup, steadying the other guy as he went on"Here, drink Hunk.. It will help with the croaky voice... Make you sound less like a frog.."

He managed the tiniest of tired smiles at his words before he found himself saying"We're all here Hunk, we're all OK or as OK as we can be given what happened.... All of us have been very worried about you, especially Lance... He literally had to be dragged away by Shiro and Pidge to get food about twenty minutes ago." He hoped some of his words were comforting for the other boy to hear, though he spoke of the group as a whole keeping the topic off himself for the time being as he went on saying"You've been here in the hospital for about two days now, the real Shiro brought you here... He came back from his holiday in time to catch the end of the fight, luckily for you because I don't know how we would've-"

He cut off not wanting to think about what could have happened if Shiro had not shown up when he did and instead spoke of something else, informing Hunk of his condition"You're legs are badly broken, but the doctors here have done their best to make sure they heal correctly, according to them the most you'll have to show for this will be some mild scarring... So you should pretty much heal completely given time.." At least physically who knows about mentally... He added silently in his head, falling quiet as h finished wondering if Hunk was ready for him to either take the plastic cup away or to have another cup of water.

He knew Keith meant his words as praise. They were, in a way. But Hunk couldn’t help but be worried about Keith. God, he’d have been just as worried if Pidge or Lance had vanished from his sight the way Keith, especially when Shiro — when Not-Shiro — had been so hellbent on hurting them all. Keith had always been more closed off than the others were, and now? Now it seemed so much worse with that haunted look in his eyes, with the way he was hunched up in that chair of his.

But his words also made Hunk swallow, his eyes helplessly drifting back to his legs. He balled his hands into fists, sucking in a deep breath. Steeling himself against the sight, ripping his gaze away towards Keith. He held a cup of water, which he put into Hunk’s hand. Honestly? He was glad for the distraction and didn’t mind letting Keith help him drink, even though he could have probably held the cup himself. Probably, because his hands were still a little shaky and he must be really tired if the cup felt heavy in his hand.

Hunk couldn’t help but smile as Keith spoke. “Lance is a good friend,” he said, voice soft. Lance had been there for Hunk since their earliest Garrison days. If it hadn’t been for Lance, Hunk might have never found the courage to drop out of the pilot program and focus his efforts the engineering side of things. Lance had always been there for him... just like everyone else was now. It made something warm and pleasant curl up in Hunk’s chest, pushing away the bleak feelings and the panic that threatened to seize control when Keith said that he’d been here for two days already.

Had his legs really been broken that badly?

Not wanting to think about that just then, he focused on the other matter of importance. “So Shiro’s back,” he mused out loud. He remembered seeing him, remembered being carried by him, maybe? It was all a blur in Hunk’s mind, but he had the distinct impression that there’d been two Shiros. One who’d wanted nothing more than to hurt them as much as possible. And the real Shiro, the one who’d been horrified to find out what had happened to them. “I’m glad that guy wasn’t our Shiro,” he admitted, voice so soft he didn’t know if Keith heard him or not.

Keith continued to talk, telling him about his condition. Mentioning that the doctors said there’d only be mild scarring by the time he’d fully healed, which made the lump in Hunk’s throat return. “Scarring?” he asked quietly, gnawing on his lower lip. To his shame, he felt tears spring to his eyes. In all the time they’d been fighting as Paladins, throwing themselves from one danger into another, Hunk had never once thought of scars.

Swallowing, he sucked in another deep, shuddering breath, quickly wiping at his eyes before he looked at Keith again. “Could I have some more water?” he asked, and Keith needed no further prompting to pour him another glass and help him drink it too. Hunk focused on the lukewarm liquid, swallowing a few more mouthfuls until he nudged the cup away and thanked Keith for helping him drink again.

“Well, this sure stinks, doesn’t it?” he finally offered, tone dry. Making light of the situation was probably stupid, but it was the only way he could think of keeping his composure. “How long am I gonna have to stay here until I can come home with you guys again? And what about your injuries? Shouldn’t you be in a bed too or something?”

Hunk didn't seem to appreciate the bemused reply Keith had given him but the dark haired teen did not respond to the other boy's discomfort instead just helping him drink. At the words about Lance he had simply nodded, for Hunk was not wrong, Lance was a good friend and a good person in general but so was Hunk, he hoped the guy knew it. With Hunk able to handle the plastic cup better with each sip of water he took Keith allowed the other to take control of it without him and shifted in his seat. Then Hunk was speaking of Shiro, his voice soft and Keith's blue, grey gaze dropped, Shiro was back yes but what had he come back to? A team that had fallen apart while he was gone, injured mentally and physically, there was no quick recovery from this for any of them. As Hunk went on stating he was glad that Not-Shiro was not the real Shiro, Keith fought to keep his expression blank and his gaze remained fixed low, on Hunk's hand. But he found himself responding, his voice soft"I am glad too..."

Though even as he spoke he could hear the horrible dying gurgles the Not-Shiro's body had made and suddenly he was swallowing hard, forcing back the horrible sick feeling he felt in his gut. He was drawn from his darkness by Hunk's whisper about scarring, instantly his gaze was back on Hunk's face, noting how he hid it from hi and wiped at his eyes. Is he crying? Oh fuck he is... Lance is going to kill me! Quickly he was reaching out to take one of Hunk's hands once again saying softly"Hey, hey Hunk... It's not that bad.... Yes there will be scars but there minor and small... and... and.. Not that notice-" He cut off as Hunk asked for water and secretly he was glad, he had no idea what to say to cheer the other guy up, he had failed him before but now it seemed he was destined to keep failing. At the others words he nodded saying"Water... Yes, sure! I can do you water..." He poured him water and allowed the action to distract him from moments before as once again he helped him drink until Hunk indicated he was done.

As Hunk spoke up again about how much it stank Keith let out a pained laugh, before saying"Well you're not wrong.. But you'll get through it, be on your feet on no time kicking ass and giving the best hugs just as before..." Then at Hunk's next question he shifted in his chair meeting the guys gaze as he answered"They've been saying roughly two weeks maybe more, maybe less depending on how you go.. Every being is different and heals differently... But roughly two weeks..." He had given the tiniest of shrugs as he finished and tried not to wince as the movement pulled on his injured shoulder hidden beneath his t-shirt. He mostly succeeded except for the flash of pain which found its way into his blue, grey gaze. Which helped as he answered the rest of Hunk's question"My injuries are mild compared to yours Hunk, I shall be fine... I am fine... I don't need a hospital bed.."

He knew he sounded slightly defensive but his words were true, compared to Hunk he was fine, his injuries really were mild, he'd been sent home to sleep in his own bed the moment they'd finished stitching and plastering him back together. The issue for Keith was much more mentally than physically and that was nothing sitting around idly was going to fix. He shifted slightly in his seat reaching for something to say which would prevent Hunk from fixing on him and settled on asking"Now you're awake we should come up with a list of things we could bring you that would keep your stay here more entertaining..." He knew once again he was wildly reaching but he kept going"Any books? Or games consoles? Or like mechanical things you can think of that fit the bill?"
