    NOVEMBER 109

"Get up," Jaesa said shortly, circling around Rey where she had been knocked down onto the ground. Their saberstaffs hummed in unison, the glows of gold and purple mixing together in the twilit yard. Jaesa spun her own lightsaber lazily in her hand, continuing to circle as she waited for Rey to get back to her feet. "Your Mistress wants you to learn this, and you know you don't want to piss her off." No more than she wanted to piss off her Master.

They had been put together to train; or rather, they had been put together for Jaesa to train Rey in the ways of the dark side. She didn't mind; it was nice to see Rey in the same kind of circumstances as herself. She wasn't alone any more. But although she didn't mind and did it because she had been ordered to, Jaesa was an impatient, brutal teacher. There were other things she could be doing rather than training Rey, like spending time with her esteemed Master. Every moment here was a moment away from him, and she hated being away from him.

"Come on, like I showed you," she said, holding her saberstaff at the ready once Rey was back to her feet. "Channel those emotions."

Rey tried to force air back into her lungs as quickly as possible as she lay on the floor, looking up at Jaesa. She was still holding her saberstaff and was cursing herself internally for falling for such a stupid move. She swore under her breath but straightened up as she looked on at the other woman. Sometimes she felt these moments of weakness; she had worked hard these past months to try to get rid of them, to be as strong as she could. That was the only way she could be of value, that was what she wanted.

A flash caught her eyes as she considered Jaesa's words; she had no desire to annoy her mistress, it was the opposite of what she wanted. Rey rolled her staff in her wrists, working on building up her emotions to go after Jaesa again.

With a flash of anger, pushing through the raw emotion she hit out with her saberstaff, towards her, going as quickly and swiftly as she had been taught. This was how she fought now, with a raw anger and a desire to win and be better above all else.

Jaesa's fingers flexed impatiently around the hilt of her saberstaff as she waited for Rey to get back to her feet. Her breath came out in a huff; they'd been practising this for a while, but Rey was yet to employ Force Lightning against her like her Mistress wanted her to learn. Her friend was strong, moreso now that she had finally given in to the lure and the thrill of the dark side, but there were some ways in which she seemed to struggle.

Well, Jaesa was going to make Rey use lightning, whatever it took.

She spun her saberstaff, one golden blade blocking purple, the other whirling to sweep and drive Rey's weapon away. When it came to lightsaber combat, Jaesa had the inherent advantage of finding it easy to block Rey's attacks after years of mastering the defensive Soresu stance, another thing that she had been trying to teach Rey. She was nowhere near as good at offensive lightsaber combat, but that had never caused a problem for her before. Besides, they weren't here for lightsaber combat anyway. Not truly. It was just something to try and drive Rey to use what Jaesa was trying to teach her.

Again, however, there was no flicker or spark to be seen, and Jaesa growled through her teeth. "If you don't learn this, it's going to be both of us in hot water," she said. "Channel your emotions into power, as I keep telling you. Like this."

As she spoke, she did exactly what she had told Rey to do, feeling that power coursing down her arm, discharging out of her hands as a burst of blue-purple lightning that arced across the space between the two women.

There was anger about the way Rey moved which made it feel foreign to the way she had once used the Force. Of course she had been trying to master this; she wanted to because it was the only thing which was going to please her mistress. It would be how she would become powerful and it would be how she would be useful and valued. Rey stared on at Jaesa, feeling a sense of jealousy at how easy it came to the woman in front of her in comparison with her own efforts.

Her lack of skill was becoming annoying and she felt pathetic. When she saw the spark come to Jaesa again she dug deep inside her, channelling that jealousy and anger, wanting to show what she could do. She screamed into her gesture and put her hand forwards, trying to bend the Force to her will in the way that she wished.

It was then, after they had been at this for hours, after the times where Rey herself had been subjected to Force lightening she was able to bring it to her fingertips for a few moments, sparking off to the side of Jaesa before disappearing. It wasn't enough though, she knew it wasn't and while she could take the smug victory here and now, she knew it was not enough completely. She would have to be better, for her mistress. "It is a start." She conceded after a moment, gritting her teeth.

They stayed there for hours, hours in which Jaesa relentlessly shocked Rey again, and again, and again, and again with Force lightning, determined to push her to the point of retaliating in kind. She never did it long enough to cause any damage beyond a few moments of hot pain, knowing that if Rey needed to go to her Mistress for Healing, the woman would not be happy.

Finally, after Jaesa's impatience was showing only too clearly on her face, Rey managed to form some sparks of lightning that darted across the space between them, missing Jaesa by inches. It was the most that Jaesa had seen from the other woman and there was a grim smile on her lips for a moment before she let her expression fall back to concentration.

"It is," she agreed with a nod. Maybe she'd be able to get Rey using lightning halfway properly before the end of the day and neither of them would have to get into trouble for failing their tasks. "You're going to need to do better though. If you don't, I will make you go back to your mistress for Healing."

To put weight behind her words, she unleashed lightning again, this time from both hands, a thick stream of violent electricity arcing between them, forcing Rey to find a way to dodge, block or retaliate... or suffer the consequences of failing.

There was a desire within her to wield that power in a stronger and greater way and she stood to her full height. It was a start but it was not enough and it would not be enough for her Mistress, she knew that. She had to be better for her. She knew what would happen if her Mistress was displeased with her and she did not want to suffer those consequences, she was better than that now.

They had been at this for hours before Rey had managed the lightening. She let the darkness wash over her. She knew there had been a time where she had shied away from such power but that part of her was gone; dead. She had been foolish to resist such power and potential but now she would take full advantage of it and do whatever her mistress bid her in the meantime. That was what she lived for now; nothing else mattered to her.

When the lightening struck out at her again, Rey's instinct was to roll out of the way but instead she ignited her saber and used it to deflect what she could of the lightening before putting the full force of her desire to win and be the more powerful here into her own attempt at Force lightening towards Jaesa, "Maybe I will send you home with more scars than your master sent you out with." She smirked as the lightening erupted from her fingertips.

Although Jaesa was a little disappointed that the lightning didn't hit Rey, she was pleased to see the other woman deflecting it with the blades of her saberstaff, and even more pleased by what Rey said. She was not threatened, nor was she angry at the woman's words. At least, not beyond the natural anger that always roiled beneath her surface, constantly feeding her strength in the Force.

"Feel free to try," she said with a twisted smile of her own. "Can't say I'd complain." They were dark side. Pain was strength. Pain was life.

Finally, Rey succeeded in what Jaesa had been trying to teach her. The torrent of lightning arced from the younger woman's fingers, beautiful in its chaotic violence, and Jaesa grinned as she deflected it with her own lightsaber blades. "Good," she said, and despite the amount of impatience that had been in her expression the past few hours, there was pride in her tone. "Only took most of the day but we finally got you there. You did well. Hopefully your mistress will be pleased."

Satisfaction passed over her when her lightening pushed over towards Jaesa was, bursting out as though effortlessly and contrasting harshly against their surroundings. She was annoyed that she did not hit her target, mainly as she had wanted to prove she could do it. The scars she had promised to inflict would have to come another day, another session. She would get her time, she was sure.

Rey sheathed her saberstaff and stood up tall, looking back at Jaesa with satisfaction. She had achieved her mission for today; she knew her mistress well enough to know that it would not guarantee she would be pleased with her, but she had done what she could today. She could only hope if she had not, any punishment would push her to be better next time. Perhaps she had been too lax in her efforts, maybe she should have tried harder to try to unlock that ability from within her.

"There is only one way to find out." Rey said, letting her gaze travel back towards where she had come from. That was her home now and had been for months; anything before that didn't matter to Rey. She looked at Jaesa before starting back towards her mistress, feeling no need to ask for permission to leave their session given their objectives had been achieved.

Although Semirhage had been surprised by her own decision to keep and break the girl, Rey, rather than simply strip her down and eventually kill her, she was glad that she had. Perhaps she'd only done so because her ally had his own Force-sensitive servant and she was not going to be outdone, but the girl had proven useful. Maybe not as useful as the other one, but that one was beyond her reach, and she did not desire to provoke her ally's wrath.

Still, Rey was useful enough, and once Semirhage had crushed her resistances, she'd taken to the process of being twisted to the dark side well enough. It had been a brutal sequence of tortures, as Semirhage was far more interested in breaking things than bending them, but it had worked well. Better, she thought, than Sauron's process of twisting his own pet. Bending people to your will gave them the opportunity to eventually escape. Breaking them of any will to resist or rebel lessened that considerably.

The fortress was quiet but for the distant screaming of prisoners down in the dungeons, and Semirhage preferred it that way. It was a pleasant backdrop for her hobby as she sat in her tall-backed chair, a black dress resting on her knees as she embroidered small blood-red flowers around the neckline and sleeves. Surprising as such activity might have seemed for someone like Semirhage, she thoroughly enjoyed knitting and embroidery.

When a shadow passed over the doorway, Semirhage looked up, dark eyes settling on the figure of the girl hovering in the entrance to the room. She'd been gone all day after she'd sent her off for her unfortunately necessary training sessions with Jaesa Willsaam. A shame that she had to rely on her ally's pet to make the most of her own, but Rey had potential. It had been reported that she had higher raw strength in their powers than Jaesa, but Jaesa was by far the more skilled. Perhaps one day Rey would be trained enough that the student would be able to defeat the teacher.

"Well?" Semirhage asked, setting the dress aside on the table next to her chair, where there was a glass of dark red wine, which she lifted to take a sip of before setting it back down again. Her imperious gaze never left the girl's. "Did you succeed?"

Rey felt satisfied with the progress she had made today and hoped her Mistress would be pleased with her too. That was all she wanted, at the end of the day, to be useful. She had been right to send her to train with Jaesa so she could unlock her potential; every pain and ache had just been a motivation to improve until she would be the one inflicting pain. She smirked just considering the possibility of what she might be able to do to Jaesa in time.

Still wearing her tight, dark top and leggings she had opted to train in, she sought out her Mistress where she knew she would be. She hovered only a moment, not wishing to disturb her if she was busy, but entered as she was called upon. She was not shy or nervous about her movements, but instead only wanted to please.

With a nod she walked further into the room, meeting Semirhage's eyes as a satisfied look crossed her features, "I did, Mistress. I produced the lightening." She was tired, though she had not been hurt enough to require healing- she knew that would have been a bad move on her part. She did not want to anger her mistress.

In an ideal world, Semirhage would have been planning on Rey either killing Jaesa in time or bringing her to Semirhage's own side, stripping Sauron of the enviable prize he had gained in taking such unique power for his own. That would have been an ideal world, but her ally was frustratingly not someone she wanted to anger so brazenly, and stealing or killing his pet would surely spell her own downfall. He was ridiculously protective of that girl. Possessive, even.

Semirhage had no such weakness when it came to the brunette moving further into the room.

She got to her feet and glided across the intervening space, slippers whispering across the lush rug on the floor, every movement fluid and graceful as she closed the distance and then looked down at Rey.

At first, she didn't speak. A hand lifted, slender fingers taking the girl's chin, tilting it upwards to give her a better look at the state of her, turning her head slightly this way and that as she gazed down, expression critical. Her thumb brushed gently across a blossoming bruise on the girl's jaw.

    "Show me."

Rey didn't move a muscle as her Mistress crossed over the floor towards her. She still felt that pride of what she had achieved for her; what a weapon it would be once she had perfected it. It would be of use to Semirhage, she was sure. That was what she wanted. She felt a flicker within her when her mistress took her chin and she inched with her, making it easier for her to examine, to see whatever she wanted.

When bid, she nodded, feeling a swell of excitement at wanting to show what she had done, what she could do for her. It had been worth all of the pain just for that moment. She stood off to the side of Semirhage, so she would be aiming at the open door, not wanting to disturb any of her mistresses' possessions or damage her person. They were not duelling now or training; this was a demonstration and one which she was keen to do.

Anger bubbled beneath her surface as it always did, along with the Dark Side which pulsed through her easily. When she called on her emotions, they were a mixture of the anger she had kept feeling when Jaesa had repeatedly attacked her and she had been too weak to retaliate in the way she wanted, how she had felt like she might disappoint Semirhage and her pride now at being able to do what her mistress wanted her to. She held her hands out and let out a cry as the sparks of blue lightening crashed from her fingers, spreading straight out and hitting the corridor on the other side of the door she had just come in to. It was not as big as the sparks Jaesa managed but they stretched far and she would be working to ensure that she could do this much better than the other woman in time.

She was satisfied that the girl had not been hurt badly enough to require Healing. She wanted the child to endure pain, to continue learning to enjoy it as Semirhage did, but she did not like the girl becoming so hurt that she was useless without the effort expended to Heal her.

There was a touch of a smile to her lips as Rey responded eagerly, moving away and demonstrating what she had been sent to learn. The enthusiasm with which Rey wanted to serve her was intoxicating. She did not understand Graendal's fixation with Compelling her pets into servitude to the point that they were mindless. There was no success in it, no satisfaction. Rey wanted to serve her, genuinely, not because of a weave controlling her mind. That was far better than Compulsion.

She stepped back, clasping her hands in front of her as she watched Rey's demonstration. At first it looked like nothing was happening, and then blue lightning surged out of her fingertips, arcing through the open door and into the corridor. Different and more restrictive in scope than the lightning that Semirhage herself could produce, but it had the marked advantage of being usable indoors. Semirhage needed to be beneath the open sky, and admittedly her own lightning was not particularly impressive. Weather was her weakest skill, not that she would ever admit to it.

"Hmmm," she murmured, circling around to face Rey again. Her expression as she gazed down at the girl was cold, carved from ice. "You will continue training as often as Jaesa's Master is willing to spare her. I want your skill to rival hers. No, I want you to surpass her." A difficult thing to demand, but Semirhage was an exacting mistress.

Her expression softened then, and she brushed a finger across the girl's jawline, before her touch lingered at the corner of her lips. "You have done well for today, however," she told her, before letting her hand drop. "Would you like to test this new ability on someone?"

While there was no nervousness about her waiting for Semirhage's approval, there was a simple need for her to have done something well for her Mistress. She wanted to be of use and that was all there was to it. She had not been too badly hurt, despite enduring a great deal of pain today at the receiving end of Jaesa's lightening. Each blow had made her want to be better; pain was a lesson and one which she loved to learn.

Her Mistresses' expression betrayed nothing initially but she nodded quickly, looking eager as though she would begin that task right here and now if she could. "I will, I will do it for you, Mistress." She promised her with a dedicated yet determined look in her eyes. The pain would be nothing when it came to the rewards she would gain. Rey was sure of that much.

Rey's lip twitched slightly as Semirhage's hand rested there, though she couldn't truly explain why and she inched towards the touch ever so slightly, barely noticeable. Her expression quickly turned into a grin as Semirhage gave her approval; Rey was glad to have it and she would continue working in order to keep it. "I would." She replied with a smirk. There was nothing she would have liked more than to use this ability on someone else, to inflict pain as she had received it today, "Who would you like me to try it on, Mistress?"
