He was not in his office when the message came through, he had been outside seeing too Hawkeye's dog as unlike her he did not have a meeting and so he had agreed to take the dog out at midday so as he could do his business. It was also the best place for signal on devices which allowed for his contact he'd set to follow Ed and Al to report to him the news he did not want to hear. His hand squeezed the device trying his best to think of what to do, a tenseness entering his posture and for a moment he shut his eyes. He didn't delete the message, instead he pocketed the device and smoothed his expression into a poker face, his dark eyes opening. He looked at Hayate who was stood at his feet waiting for him to take him back inside out of the snow and instead of taking the dog back to Riza's apartment he allowed the dog to come with him to his makeshift office as that was where he needed to be.

Roy found himself pacing back and forth his office a moment, not even bothering to pull off the long blue, jacket he had on over his shirt and dark slacks. Then he was at the shelves he had to one side of his makeshift office pulling files down from the shelves muttering"I should have expected this... Trouble always comes..." Grabbing files he dumped them on his desk not caring that the files knocked most everything else from his desk and Hayate came over to sniff at the items he'd knocked onto the floor as Roy began to peer over them, the tenseness only growing as one of his hands curled into a fist against the desk it leaned on. Concern pulled at him but so did anger, the kid, his responsibility, his friend was missing and now, he needed a way to find him.

Yet in that moment, right after hearing he almost felt helpless, he knew he needed to relax, to focus and then maybe he'd be able to find a way to find Ed. But in that moment he was struggling to level out, it was perhaps because of how tense he was that he heard the quiet tread of someone familiar approaching his office, his gaze briefly flickered up before falling back on the files as the quiet footsteps came to a halt in his doorway.

Long meetings were something of a part of life around Morhall these days. The longer winter went on the more care was needed to see to this or that thing, to try and secure some supply that was close to running low or hear about another thing blocked or broken by the freezing weather outside. It was a part of the job, she knew that, but that didn't make it any less exhausting than her old jobs had been. She went home with just as many cases of a tension headache now as she had as a sniper or the Fuhrer's assistant- the only difference was that here they ended with the much more concrete hope of a better tomorrow.

Or usually it did. As she came to Mustang's office to check on him, Hayate was pacing, a sure sign of his concern, and the floor was covered in this and that and Mustang's entire body was a giant knot of nerves. Not a good sign. Brow furrowed she stopped in the doorway and watched for a moment, then ventured inside calmly. Concerned she might have been, but worrying and panicking over it wasn't going to do anyone any good. Especially when it was her doing it; when she lost control of her emotions it seemed to cause a worse reaction than even that.

So instead she patted her leg quietly to call Hayate to her, and he came over, tail wagging faintly as he glanced between her and Roy. "I take it all's not right in Paradise?" she asked with a dryly knowing tone, then moved closer to one of the objects that had fallen off of his desk and picked it up. "What's going on?"

He was looking through the file in front of him, wrenching paper out as he tried to find some kind of answer to where Ed may have gone as the footstep's entered the room. The action sent another file tumbling to the floor beyond the desk to join the rest of the mess and the fist that he lent on pressed further into the desk, his dark gaze running over the paper he currently had the page turned too as his other hand held the other pages up out the way. His jaw worked as quietly he felt the ball of worry working in his gut, he hated feeling helpless, he had to do something, but what could he do? It was in that moment that Riza chose to spoke to him, her voice dry and he wished he could allow her humour to draw him out of this dark pit he could feel himself balancing on the edge of. However the helplessness clung to him, there had to be something he could do, something he could find that would allow him to help Ed and then Riza was right by his desk, speaking again, asking to know what had happened.

He dropped the pages of the file he had been looking through and finally looked up, letting Riza see his troubled expression, as he responded"Trouble..." He straightened and pulled the device he'd got the message from the contact on out his pocket, before taking the item she had picked up off of her and replacing it with his cell device, encouraging her to look at the message. Then with all his strength he forced himself not to throw the unimportant (at least to him) file he now held across the room in his frustration and instead went and dumped it on the floor near the bookcase for him to put away later, the tension running through his body as his jaw worked before he spoke again"I should have known this would happen.... I should have gone with them... I should have done more..."

He was speaking in a voice that was little more than a mutter and his dark gaze was running over the files left on his book case and as he reached to lift more off the shelves before saying"I have to put this right... There has to be something..." His back was to Riza, unable to see that she could likely hear his muttered words and in that moment he realised he didn't really care if she heard, he just wanted to find some kind of answers.

When she'd come in she'd known that something was wrong, but that could cover a wide, wide range of things- from losing important paperwork and delaying something to being in a rush because he had to go somewhere out of town and solve a problem. On seeing his face though she realized it was something much, much more personal than that. Her entire expression deep into her brown eyes showed her concern as she took the phone and read what he was reading. 'Trouble' was an understatement, perhaps the one of the new year. Immediately her eyes widened as she stared and let the information sink in.

His muttering drew her gaze back up though and the look of shock was replaced by one of understanding. He'd never been good at losing people, no matter how it happened. Alchemists never seemed to be, at least in her experience. His attention was on his shelves, as though somewhere in those writings would hold a secret key to finding Ed, as though the right alchemical formula would light a path or produce evidence. If it could, she was sure he'd have it by now- but that wasn't how it worked. Her pragmatism told her that if anything was likely to have the answers, it was the phone in her hand, and not those books.

Walking over toward him she stood to his side, a step behind- an old habit, but perhaps a good one. After all, she should be closer to the door, so that if he needed something she could go get it and let him keep working. However, unlike those days she took his hand and slid the phone back into it, and held it a moment longer. It came to her mind that she could tell him that this wasn't his fault, that there was no way he could have known that they'd run into this trouble; after all, Ed and Al were used to traveling on their own, they preferred it. However, he wouldn't believe it, or hear it- and if he did, he'd deny it. The words would be there later, when he needed them.

"We have contacts in other places. It might be wise to start with getting in touch with them, to see what we can find out," she said instead, her voice steady and calm despite her own worries. Those boys needed help, and there was little enough here to give them. "I'll see what Wanda knows, or if Commander Hershey sent me anything in those files she brought over. Is there anything else you need me to do?"
