April 27th, Year 7, Somewhere In Orbit City

It was an almost perfect sphere, containing a myriad of sensors and circuitry, all wrapped around a slightly scuffed metal exterior. Most of the time, it rolled about the place, taking measurements of ambient temperatures, monitoring pressure and checking the chemical composition of the air around it. Small enough to go unnoticed as it went about doing vital work to maintain the safety of the city. At this particular moment, it was being held by Alphys, and after a few attempts at trying to roll itself free from it's grasp, it went still. A baleful little light somewhere within it glowed red.

To make matters worse, this wasn't the monster's first victim. She'd scooped up another atmospheric monitoring robot earlier, and now that she held one in each clawed hand, she peered at them both in amazement. Alphys brought one close to her face, staring at it through the thick lenses of her spectacles, before turning it over carefully and inspecting the other side. There were a few grooves in the metallic casing, where presumably somebody could get into the machine to perform repairs. Black sensor bars were set into it here and there, each functioning like a little mirror, reflecting a slightly distorted image of Alphys back at her. A small patch, protected by a fine wire mesh, allowed for air to be sucked in and analysed.

The other one she held was identical, save for the pattern of scratches along the exterior that were slightly different. Once she was satisfied she had a reasonable idea of how they worked, Alphys cast a surreptitious glance up and down the empty corridor. While there was every chance somebody might come through she was, for that second, alone, save for the two spherical robots. One in each hand. Her hands started to tremble a little and, soon, that extended to the rest of her body, which was trembling.

Slowly, carefully, she pressed the two robots together, so that the little meshed panels were just touching one another. For Alphys, time stood still. For the two slightly confused robots who, courtesy of the power of advanced technology, could measure time perfectly well, strange seconds began to count up into even stranger minutes. Eventually, one of the robots began to beep loudly, making it's displeasure obviously, and loudly, known. This sudden development snapped Alphys out of her reverie, and she dropped the beeping robot, which continued to beep loudly as it rolled away.

Stuffing the other robot into the pocket of her lab-coat, Alphys gave chase as the escaping robot nimbly rolled down the corridor and on to one of the slidewalks, letting it put even more distance between itself and the pursuing monster. While the baseball sized robot could easily and nimbly weave it's way between the legs of other slidewalk users, Alphys was not nearly so short, nor as nimble, and so her method for chasing after the robot involved trying to squeeze through groups of people standing about on the slidewalk.

The little robot tucked away in her pocket began to let out the same shrill, alarming, beeping noise as Alphys continued her chase.

Millicent and her little half formed golem companion Sid were walking the weirdness of Orbit City, it was a city in the clouds with all kinds of metallic wonders. Reminding her a little of High Heaven, though with less demonic possession and corruption but there was still a certain lifelessness about it all. Sid on the other hand was wondering around, looking at all the weird little robots floating about doing things.

Millicent hadn't seen such life forms before either, despite all her lengthy travels and fighting of all manner of beasts. These things were quite different and didn't seem hostile, Sid was enjoying looking at them when some strange bird/lizard hybrid monster came from nowhere. It was chasing one of the smaller robots, which seemed to be making a lot of noise as was the one in the creatures hand. Millicent looked on as Sid moved forward and picked up the little robot, giving it a kind of look of amazement while the robot beeped in fright.

From what could be guessed, it was scared more of the lab coat wearing creature. Then Sid the half formed Golem, looked at the robot and tilted it's head at it's beeps. Millicent wasn't sure either but she guessed it was running from the other creature "I think it's running from that being" explained as Sid looked at her. Sid then went on the defensive and looked with anger at Alphys, Millicent sighed and walked forward "What's your desire with these metallic things, they don't seem interested" informed Millicent to the little creature.

"D-desire?", Alphys tried, and failed, to look innocent as she tripped over the word. The little robot still in her possession beeped and whistled quietly, passing information along to it's counterpart. Alphys pointedly ignored it's rather plaintive noises, instead focusing her attention on Millicent as her mind raced to come up with some excuse that sounded better than 'I wondered what it'd be like to make them kiss one another'. While, technically, just about anything sounded better than that, Alphys still couldn't settle on one, and so stood there, staring up at the pale human for a moment, in silence that spoke volumes about her guilt.

"I.. wondered.. how they w-work? That, ah, the spherical form is actually quite efficient f-for navigating the, um, c-compared to two legs, which are a little more d-difficult," the more she spoke, the more nervous she was getting, and so rather than continue with her bare-faced lie, she quickly decided to change the subject, transitioning over to something that would be less incriminating. Raising a clawed hand, she pointed at the hunched, skull-headed, biological looking thing that was, despite a lack of eyeballs, was clearly giving Alphys a very angry look indeed.

"Is that, um, a f-friend of yours? He s-sort of reminds me of someone."

It was not a particularly smooth transition.

The strange bird like creature was not convincing, with it's first sentence and any other after that. And it seemed quite desperate to change the subject to her companion, claiming some resemblance to someone it knew. Which was unlikely but this world was strange and she was told that many different people from different worlds did get pulled into this one.

"Let the little creature go, it does not wish your attention. While your pitiful lies don't hold water, the creature behind me is my companion. He isn't even a fully formed life form but he can tell the ball creatures don't wish the attention" ordered Millicent to the little yellow thing.

Alphys didn't really seek to contest anything that Millicent said, she was quite correct that the small robot didn't appreciate Alphys handling it, and being held was just making it more irritated. Bending down to set the spherical robot on the ground, she paused in thought. This place was where she could be anything she wanted, she considered, and that meant not being scared.

Straightening herself up, or as close to upright as she ever really got, Alphys tightened her grip on the little robot in her hands and gave Millicent a look. Not exactly a stern look, but rather the sort of look that somebody who had never really stood up for themselves might think a more confident person would give. She even narrowed her eyes, ever so slightly.

"I h-happen to be an expert on robots," she said, trying not to over-think things, "so y-you and your, your half-formed friend can, you can.. y-you can.."

This was, Alphys realised before she even managed to finish her sentence, a poor idea.

"..y-you can, um, shove it. Shove it up o-one of your holes."

    A spectacularly poor idea.

It looked as if the little yellow thing was going to let the spherical creature go but at the last second it changed it's mind. Attempting to be brave, Millicent could tell that it had never done so before. Probably hadn't even fought a day before in it's life, while Millicent was a tried and tested warrior. Sid made a silent motion that looked as if it was a laugh of some sorts, while pointing at the little yellow thing.

Millicent wasn't about to kill the yellow being, however it needed to learn that sometimes standing up to someone wasn't healthy. Especially when your reasoning was backed by ill deeds "I do not care for your expertise, the ball creature wishes freedom. And you shall give it or be forced too, are we clear" ordered Millicent as she took the large two handed scythe off her back. Taking it in her hands, the thing didn't resemble a normal scythe, looking more like a large crescent of some kind.

It was also quite sharp, very likely capable of turning Alpys into sliced chicken pieces if Millicent felt up to the task. She swung the blade down from above towards Alphys, stopping short of it's head by mere inches. "You should not test a warrior too often, I suggest you do as I say. Or next time I may go all the way" informed Millicent with a fairly stoic tone and unchanging face.

It would be all to easy for an onlooker to consider Alphys's reaction to the impending strike as bravery; she didn't flinch or recoil, but simply stood there as Millicent took up her weapon and swung. The truth is it wasn't bravery. It was almost the exact opposite. Part of her wanted to cry out and cower, yet in the moment before the wickedly sharp blade came to a halt, it didn't happen. When it didn't connect, she looked up at the business end of the scythe, held perfectly steady above her head. A less capable warrior wouldn't have been able to stop it, with all that momentum, or even hold it so perfectly still.

And then, finally, she dropped the robot, letting it go about it's vital business of keeping an eye on the atmospheric conditions within the floating city. As it rolled off into the distance, beeping all the way about the weird things it was being made to do, Alphys stood in silence, just staring at the blade.

"I'm s-sorry," she said sadly, not exactly directed at Millicent to begin with, but eventually her gaze drifted back up to the lady on the other end of the crescent-scythe, "I j-just thought maybe I should give it a try. Guess n-not all of us our cut out to be warriors, or sort of skeleton-and-meat things."

After the funny creature had dropped the metal ball thing, Millicent replaced her scythe to it's resting place. As the little avian person proclaimed apology and stated that she had just wanted to give it a try. "One should not toy with the existence of others, it is neither moral nor necessary" replied Millicent in an almost noble tone of voice.

Despite her particular brand of magic, she was a fairly moral person who followed a certain code of honour. Very rarely did she allow the persecution of other beings regardless of their artificial nature, as long as they posed no threat to others. "And one should never strive to be someone else, merely strive to better yourself in general" added Millicent.
