He was going to die. That mere phrase in his head echoed around his brain like a distant dream. And even while everyone around him pointed to treatments and Clinics: hell even the demon in his brain would snarl about how he was being stupid and pointlessly suicidal, there was a strange kind of hope to that. This is what he deserved, in the end, after all. A normal death, for one, not one focused on demons and dark creatures but one where he could pass away into the night. Ghost Riders didn’t usually have this luxury.

It was what he deserved for failing to save his own children. For being stuck here, unable to get to them. For being a failure as a parent. So for both good and ill Johnny Blaze would leave this world a distant memory, perhaps remembered only by a handful. But before he did…. It was time to make peace with whatever he was going to after.

He went to a Church first, the only Church in Misty Hollow. Instinctually going to the religion most Texans claimed to be, even if they didn’t actually attend regularly. And with his life full of demons and angels already well: it made the most sense that was where he was going.

The Priest though, was ‘busy’ (too busy for non members was the implication). He was given pamphlets about regular church going and, while he took them politely they ended up in a trash bin by the road (once he was very very far away from any line of sight, the desire to not be rude echoing in his brain).

He was prepared to go home, or maybe go to a book store and find a bible. Never read it before, maybe that was the right step?..... when his sight line caught the sign about the Buddhist Temple.

And so: his bike rumbled up to the quiet area, steps going on upward into bamboo shoots and greenery like something out of a Jackie Chan film. He climbed up the steps (stopping to cough a bit along the way) and made his way upwards to an Asian-like building and a whole bunch of people walking about quietly, praying at incense pots…..

…. Almost instantly Johnny felt like running. It was too peaceful. He didn’t belong there, disturbing peaceful prayers asking for good luck in the New Year. He was all out of luck, after all. He turned on his heel and made to go back down the stairs with an almost nervous, jerky motion....

  2. Byakuren was doing her job as the priestess and watched the proceedings alongside her trainee. Many of the people around were meditating and wishing for a better coming year, others were just checking the temple out of curiosity, but all in all, everything was at peace and there was a positive atmosphere surrounding the temple grounds.

... However, Byakuren soon felt a bit of a disturbance. That manifested in the form of one Johnny Blaze who she saw climbing up the stairs to the temple, only to turn around not long after and begin going back. What could it be that was troubling him so much?

Quietly telling Miyu to keep watch while she dealed with the matter, Byakuren made her way over to the stairs as fast as she could without disrupting the monks, stoppnig once she was at the top of the stairs.

"Johnny? Is there something wrong?" She asked him, clearly curious, but there was also some evident concern in her voice.

Johnny was almost down the first set of steps, bamboo tracing against the shoulders of his leather clad jacket, cursing himself for ever coming to a peaceful place. He did not belong here. Now with a demon snarling on his soul, nor the oppressive cancer in his lungs. He’d just…. Go home and watch a stupid Lifetime movie. Someone always died in one of those, always had some kind of spiritual revelation. He could live vicariously through them…

A voice stopped him, halfway down a step, turning and looking almost too quickly with some wild look of a terrified animal in his blue eyes. Trying to run before he could be noticed. Too damn late for that.

    Johnny is there something wrong?

Everything is wrong: He wanted to say. I’m dying of cancer and I’m trying to be okay with it. But the girl at the top of the steps had not only said his name when he never gave it, she looked damn familiar….

”Oh…” The panic in his blue eyes dissipated somewhat. The memory of a wild girl who’d never stepped on a real bike herself before, peeling out of an alleyway like a damn fool. ”Hey…. Uh…. Miss Byakuren.” He managed, his voice strangely horse, sticking his hands in his pockets. ”It’s uh, been a while. How’s the bike treatin’ yah?”

He didn’t really answer her question. He wasn’t sure the girl would appreciate a grown ass man spilling out all his worries onto her.

  4. Johnny turned around so quickly, and the look in his eyes seemed frightened. There was something very wrong happening, even if he seemed intent to avoid the question. He came to the temple with a purpose in mind and perhaps he was looking for some peace, but what had made him turn around and go back before even properly stepping into the temple's grounds?

"It has been quite some time since we last had the opportunity to talk, yes. The motorbike has been wonderful." She answered his question with a sincere smile, but did not take long to come back to the more pressing matter. "What brings you to my humble temple?"

Perhaps wording it in a different way could get her different results, hopefully. It wasn't every day that something like this happened, least of all with someone Byakuren actually knew. Johnny seemed tense, afraid, something was troubling him deeply and she wanted to know what, although, if he really didn't want to tell her, then there wasn't much that she could do.

Johnny hoped to god he could just, fucking run and get home where he could lament his own stupidity. But that was obviously not going to happen. He wasn’t going to run out while carrying a conversation with an old customer. He placed a foot on the step, awkwardly playing with the hem of his leather jacket, listening as she commended her motorbike and discussed how long it was they last met.

”Oh well…. Come a long way. Actually have a garage now, in the town.” He told her with an awkward smile that didn’t quite reach his eyes. ”Ever have a problem with it, just come on over and I’ll fix it up.”

Then, she asked why he was in her temple. His smile fell somewhat at the question.

”Oh um…..” He shifted his stance, wondering what he should say. I’m dying and I feel like I need some kind of spiritual guidance to the afterlife seemed too grim. He stuck his hands in his pockets, looking awkward as he finally said:

”Well…. Texas don’t have a lot of Buddhist Temples. Got curious…. But I don’t wanna cause no trouble if ya’ll are busy……”

Best he could come up with. With why he appeared, turned around, and tried running back down the steps like a crazy person. God he was such an idiot…..

  6. So he lived in Misty Hollow now. That would explain his presence in the ball that happened around Christmas, then again, he was also present at Lady Margolotta's vampire ball, the one Mr.Santiago had invited her to. Perhaps he had been invited by one of the other vampires as well, otherwise he couldn't see much reason as to why he would be there. How strange that they were the only ones who attended both events, yet didn't actually get to talk to each other in either occasion.

"I see, thank you. I'll make sure to visit whenever I begin facing any difficulties with it." She replied to his offer with a smile on her face.

The way he was being so awkward around her reminded Byakuren a little of the time Mad Sweeney visited her at her house last month. Was it something about her that left people feeling like that? Did she carry herself in such a dignified way that others were intimidated by her presence? Or was it all coincidence? It was hard to tell, sometimes.

"Ah, that would be no trouble at all. Any new visitors are gladly welcomed into our temple, and if you're interested in learning more about the religion, I would be happy to offer you some insight." She offered him a hand. "Would you like to come inside, rather than talk in the middle of a staircase?" She made her offer with a giggle to lighten the mood a little.

Johnny was the kind of person who wanted to leave people alone. Not bother them with his own problems. And he didn’t want to bother nobody, especially not some stranger he’d just met, with his own personal spiritual issues that needed to be resolved. It just wasn’t a nice thing to do, and his own anxiety levels felt like they were being spiked through the roof.

Johnny played with his hands anxiously as he tried to keep on the more polite, adult, conversation going. Nodding with a smile as she said she’d drop by if there were any problems with her bike. And then she offered to show him around the temple if he really wanted a tour, and he let out a visible wince as she offered him a hand. Like that hand was more closer to a snake than a hand.

”Well uh…… I uh…… Idon’t.” Johnny let out a wince, listening as she jokingly said he shouldn’t be standing there in the middle of the stairs, trying to lighten the mood.

”Well you guys look busy up there and…. I really don’t want to be any trouble.” But really: he’d already taken up so much of her damn time. Maybe if he just got through a tour then she’d feel like her time wasn’t a complete waste? He wasn’t exactly looking to convert: he just wanted someone to tell him everything would be okay once he was gone and six feet under.

So with that, he stuffed his hands in his pockets almost sheepishly, and made his way back up the stairs to where she was standing.

”So uh…” He muttered, resisting the urge run now that he’d hiked back up here. Smiling at the girl sheepishly, ”uh…. Buddhism?”

  8. Johnny seemed almost afraid when Byakuren offered her hand to him. For someone who had such a rough look to him, he was certainly meek, in a way that had a certain charm to it while also being amusing. He stammered, trying to find words and failing, until he came up with exactly what he had said earlier, in spite of Byakuren reassuring him that he wouldn't be causing any trouble.

Still, he did cave and walked up towards her, awkwardly trying to prompt her into beginning to talk about her religion. He wore such a sheepish smile that Byakuren couldn't help but giggle, covering her mouth with her hand so as to not be too rude.

"Yes, buddhism. A religion of peace where we seek to overcome all our suffering in this world with a goal of achieving true happiness through meditation and taking responsibility for all of our actions." She spoke as she began leading him forward, walking in a moderate pace. "Did you come here for any purposes, or was it really just mere curiosity?"

While it was perfectly plausible that Johnny simply never had a good opportunity to visit before, his behavior still seemed a little unusual, even if she didn't know him all that well. It looked like he had things he wanted to say, but was having difficulty doing so. She wasn't about to force an answer out of him, but she figured it would be best to try to gently nudge him into speaking out.
