    SKILLS & ABILITIES

Gun Specialist: After joining the military Riza was shown to have an aptitude in marksmanship as well as the calm, detatched mindset necessary for a sniper. She received specialized marksmanship training that allows her to use many varieties of sniper rifle effectively, with and without a spotter. She also has very good handgun control, being able to aim and shoot at several different targets in quick succession, or two at the same time with different guns. This training is constantly reinforced by her practicing in her spare time. She's also developed a knack for judging distances and bearing by sight alone. While she tends to favor sniper rifles and handguns, she is also proficient with other types and able to use them.

She has also trained herself to use guns safely in melee situations and knows how to maintain her own firearms to keep them in excellent condition, as well as possessing the knowledge to make her own rounds if she has the materials.

Military Training: While she is a gun specialist and sniper, those are not the only skills she learned in the Amestrian Army. She is a ranked First Lieutenant whose non-combat specialty is Support Staff, which means she is in charge of most her unit's paperwork, the soldiers being kept on task and advising her commanding officer. With her experience at navigating bureaucracy she is able to actually get things done ahead of time, rather than having to wait for results, and is generally well-informed as to what is happening around her. On the physical side, she does know some hand-to-hand fighting techniques and is very physically fit.

Subterfuge: Riza has a knack for learning and remembering various codes and at passing messages surreptitiously, as well as knowing when someone is trying to communicate with her or others in the same fashion. When she does choose to lie, it is very difficult to detect it, and she has very good control over her facial features and vocal tones to assist in this.

Soldier's Instincts: After years on the battlefield Riza became very observant to changes in details as signs of a threat and the skill never left her. It manifests as an ability to recognize deception or danger by giving her an 'eerie' feeling just beforehand, or when presented with a non-human being that poses some kind of threat to her.

Good vision: Riza's eyes are particularly sharp and she has better vision than most.

    Equipment
    Pistols:
Riza carries two .45 caliber pistols, one chrome and one black. Both hold 6 rounds each in their magazine.

Revolver: Snub nosed revolver that uses .38 mm rounds. This is a personal sidearm and if she is off-duty Riza tends to carry this one.

Sniper Rifle: This is her bolt-action sniper rifle and primary weapon out of melee combat. Its magazine holds 5 rounds and it possesses a scope to allows for her to be accurate at long range.

NPC's AbilitiesBlack Hayate is a year old Shiba Inu whom Riza has trained since puppyhood. While generally polite to people in passing and even friendly with those he knows well he is very devoted to his mistress, trusting and looking to her for permission and guidance. He is extremely well-trained, able to walk off-leash without wandering away and capable of performing a number of tricks, or of being left to himself and not causing trouble.

While not explicitly trained as an attack dog, Hayate can be exceptionally protective when provoked, and may attack. Though not a large dog, standing only about knee high, he is very athletic and has been known to jump for the throat or face if he feels very threatened. He also seems to have some sort of canine instinct towards anything 'unnatural' and becomes extremely tense around it, growling crouching protectively. He is otherwise calm, and not alarmed by the sound of guns being fired around him.

    WEAKNESSES

Riza and Black Hayate are both regular, mortal creatures who are susceptible to everything that would hurt, maim or kill other creatures of their type.

Marksmanship: It requires exceptional focus to use a firearm with great accuracy. This can leave Riza defenseless against surprise attacks in such situations. Also, her guns are regular, mundane weapons, and can be broken or stolen, and require upkeep to stay in good working order. They do also misfire at times.

Soldier's Instincts: It is faint and indistinct, and utterly and uncertainly up to interpretation as to what the dangerous situation may be. This causes it to be often ignored, due to the lack of clarity.

"Is it alright to believe in a future where everyone can live in happiness?"

Riza Hawkeye was born to Berthold Hawkeye, an alchemical researcher, and his wife, who died while Riza was still very young. She had no memories of her mother, but her father loved her in his own way and she him. Berthold's research absorbed most of his time and their household was poor. So she learned to look after things, as much as a child could anyway. In return, Berthold arranged for her to have a good education.

Riza aged into a quiet girl with a kind smile and a conscientious manner. Her lessons went well, she was bright, and she made do despite her father's ailing health. His health was poor and he researched constantly, barely noticing his daughter at all. Despite his nature though she had learned a lot about morality and duty, and had a native sense of hope toward the world and the future, despite Berthold's pessimism and obsession.

In her teens her father took on Roy Mustang as an apprentice and hopeful inheritor of his alchemy. When Roy left his lessons to join the Amestrian Military, a decision Berthold despised, he became angry and desperate. There seemed to be nothing to soothe his mood- until he came to Riza with a request. For Riza to be the research's ultimate guardian by having it permanently embedded in her flesh. She would choose who got the knowledge, and whatever happened with that knowledge would rest on her shoulders.

With trepidation, but knowing the duty of a child to their parent, she agreed.

By the time Mustang came back, Berthold was on his deathbed. He met with his student one last time, then died in front of them. Riza and Roy arranged his funeral and talked afterward about the future. On hearing his plans and observations of the world and his utter faith in a way things could be bettershe felt that glimmer of hope again, and decided he was worthy. He left with the secrets of Flame Alchemy, and having put hope and a new sense of duty toward the people as a whole into her heart, as well as a unerring sense of loyalty and responsibility toward him.

"It's alright. We have the 'Hawk's Eye' on us."

Once Mustang returned to the military Riza finished her education and enlisted. With the Ishvalan conflict still in full swing soldiers were needed desperately and she did well in training, becoming a sniper and an officer. Because the conflict was going badly for Amestris training was cut short and she was soon sent to the front. When Riza arrived it was not the war she'd been told it was; it was a brutal slaughter. But she had her duty and no way out, as well as people to protect, so she did her grisly work. She soon had a respectable reputation as the 'Hawk's Eye' who kept them safe and despite hating her work she continued to do it for the sake of those who needed her.

Through Maes Hughes she met Mustang again and was both relieved at his survival and disillusioned as to the choice she'd made, the 'gift' she had given him and the way it destroyed lives, remembering the madness that had gripped her father, and the burden that left on her. After Amestris's 'victory', weighed down by her regrets and burdens, she requested that Mustang destroy the research, even if it meant destroying her. He obliged and for the first time in her life she was able to make decisions without regard to her childhood or alchemy.

" I chose it myself, and put my arms through the sleeves of the uniform of my own will."

After the war Riza chose to remain in the military and served as second in command in ]Colonel Mustang's unit, playing the role of 'adjutant and nanny'. This was a part of a very, very long term plan to advance Mustang through the military so he could lead the nation to his dream- with Riza, a true believer in him and his words, pushing him ahead through whatever means she could. They had become friends, confidants, battle partners and each other's protectorate, and a strong affection had taken root as well. She held the right to end him if he got out of control, at his request; he in turn proved himself worthy of flame alchemy and her trust.

Life took up a rhythm in those years. Riza had friends and coworkers she was comfortable with, who appreciated her dry sense of humor and warm heart. Those she commanded were grateful for her clear head and clear leadership, and the fact that their superior was willing to work just as hard as she pushed them to work. While she never forgot the horrors of the war she began to accept that it would never go away, and worked to make sure it would never happen again. Strong allies abounded. It was in this time that Riza adopted Black Hayate, her constant companion. Ed and Al soon became something of younger brothers to the normally stoic woman who continued to see them as children despite the life they had chosen and did her best to help them.

Hughes' death was a tragedy and revealed the conspiracy within the very core of the nation itself. Not willing to let more death and war happen without making some attempt to fight it, Riza joined Mustang's resolution to get to the bottom of this in the name of their old friend and the people's safety. With this new conviction she resolved to do what was needed, turning against the military order to save the world.

Until they were caught by that very military and its homunculi leader. Rather than have her executed- or worse- she was taken under the command of their greatest foe as a hostage for Mustang's good behavior, since their bond was well known. She was able to help in small ways, learning what she could and leaking information to Mustang and the others in the conspiracy, despite the risk to herself.

"Forgive me, sir. I simply couldn't stand around and do nothing."

On the Promised Day Riza gathered with the other rebels to start their insurgency. She was one of the four who ventured into the underground of Amestris to seek out and destroy the homunculi and their Father before the plan could take place. Their mission was sidetracked as Envy came onto the scene and Riza being told to stay behind while Mustang went after his friend's murderer. After a few minutes of concern at the noise she ventured inside as well, and seemed to find Mustang easily. However, a quick verbal trick proved it to be Envy. In the ensuing fight Riza was at a disadvantage due to the homunculi's strength and abilities until Mustang showed up to take on the enemy himself. Or rather not himself as his rage consumed him. Watching in horror, she saw Envy's return to his native form and stood to stop the Colonel as the sound of approaching footsteps reached her.

It was then, distracted as she was, that Riza was dragged into Pandora.
