The TV news provided the perfect opportunity to address a matter in a massive scale. Obviously, as a Head of Public Affairs, Rebekah Mikaelson acknowledged the power of the media and she had used them before. This time though her public speech was not about calling the citizens to a charity event. This was about leaving the government. When the reporter announced her as a guest, she started talking without further ado.

    “Good morning ladies and gentleman.

I am not here to shape the public opinion. The responsibility of an entirely community does not burden the shoulders of the fortunate few. The government has no special rights, no advantages and no immunity to problems. However, each one of us has to remember the obligation and moral duty as a citizen. To stand up against any form of tyranny, to speak whenever injustice happens and to seek out the truth.

An ancient concept of free expression ultimately shaped the notions of liberty and democracy. More importantly, it is crucial to understand that the intent of such a privilege is not to create tension or outright conflict. The mere goal is to encourage the people to address important matters openly and unburdened by fear. It is an individual’s right to express opinions without restraint. In actuality, this same ideal dates back to the ancient world and the birthplace of this value, Greece. The freedom of speech represents a fundamental building block which democracy has been reliant upon.

Democracy promotes the respect towards other and ourselves, which serves as the basis of justice, equality and the unity of a civilized society. The sense of worth accompanied by a seemingly insignificant evaluation of other is capable of causing a ripple effect. Of course respect can not be demanded. It is earned. Yet, treating each other with honor and kindness leads to true harmony. Discrimination, on the other hand, occurs quite often since people are excluded from society due to characteristics beyond their power. Their hair-color, their eye-color, their skin-color and their very nature.

Indeed, this world is brimming with citizens who are far more powerful than humans. But instead of embracing and celebrating the traits that makes each person unique, people are punished for being different. As of late, my fellow members of the Council have been the target of frustration and aggression without solid evidence of foul deeds or for events that can possibly be fully controlled. In the view of those events, I shall remain loyal to my personal values and this shall be considered my official resignation.

Thank you for listening and good day.”

Through the entire speech her bright blue eyes were serious and her voice sounded filled with passion. At the last comment though, a mischievous smile curled the corners of her lips.
