    Year 7 - February 3rd

Upon awakening, Sephiroth was profoundly aware of several things at once.

First of all, uncomfortable was a gross understatement for how he felt, coming to on a frigid concrete rooftop. While his meager supplies did keep the worst of the elements off him, they didn't provide much comfort. Even one of the flat, understuffed laboratory cots he had grown up sleeping on would have been preferable.

Second, he was dimly aware that the side of his face was... damp. Lifting his head grudgingly, still blinking away sleep, he met the moss-green, ugly eyes of the... cat. The cat which had, since his arrival in Pandora Town several days ago, been following Sephiroth religiously from place to place. It was a hideous, old, scruffy thing. It's back legs were longer than the front ones, and it had snaggle teeth that erupted out of its mouth at all kinds of creative angles. It drooled incessantly, and foamed when it purred, which seemed to be always. Its eyes were crossed at the best of times. It looked like it had run into a concrete wall and lost.

He was becoming... almost fond of it.

Sitting up and allowing Ugly Cat to climb onto his lap, still vaguely fascinated that the animal showed no fear at all, Sephiroth rubbed his forehead, trying to dispel the frustrating, nonsensical urge to get up and go in some direction he didn't particularly understand. He ran his fingers through his hair as he fought to shake off the eerie sensation, gently working out a handful of tangles before releasing it from the loose tail he had tied it in for the night.

He shook his head again, but that urge was still there, so Sephiroth pushed himself onto his feet, organizing his small collection of belongings into a precise pile. Then, after a languid stretch, he headed over to the fire escape, swinging onto it with grace and, as an afterthought, gently scooping Ugly Cat up into his arms and holding it securely as they dropped down into the alleyway.

Letting the cat go, Sephiroth opted to cast caution into the wind and began to follow his mind's predetermined path, taking turns he had never seen before with utmost confidence and watching in confusion as the city around him seemed to adopt a larger, shinier, more expensive appearance. At his heels, Ugly Cat mewled pathetically, and Sephiroth had to agree with its sentiments.

This did not feel like a place he ought to be.

Coming to a stop at last, Sephiroth stared up at the sign for a... pizza parlor?

His mind seemed determined that this was right, but his intelligence rebelled. After all, he didn't have the money to waste on pizzas, no matter how good it smelled. This whole walk felt like nothing but a waste, and Sephiroth folded his arms with an irritated huff, staring at his immediate surroundings in hope that something might illuminate what was going on, only to feel his heart skip a beat...

Then turn to frozen lead in his chest as he locked eyes with someone he had never met in his life, yet who filled him with such a sense of loathing that his immediate instinct was to summon Masamune and skewer him with it. The only thing stopping him was the absolute absurdity of the thought, and the intellectual knowledge that this was a stranger, however much he instinctively hated him.

Looking between the horrible human being in front of him and the pizza parlor, Sephiroth reached down and scooped up Ugly Cat as a means to keep his hands busy before he tried to strangle the stranger. "Is this... a joke?" He asked coldly, making it clear by tone alone just what he would do if it was.

He knew exactly what it was he'd gone and done, and the moment he'd done it, he'd regretted it. Why was he so desperate to feel the happiness he had once lost? He had friends. Few of them, but everybody always said that you didn't need many. Guinevere, though, had been so much more than a friend and he didn't know that he could ever move past her. But he wanted to. He didn't want to feel sad anymore.

Had he gone to Misty Hollow and asked Jesus for his opinion, Jack had a feeling he would have advised against this in the first place. That was exactly the reason he hadn't done that. Even thinking about it on his own, it seemed ridiculous. Maybe he just thought it wouldn't actually work, but if it did, gods, if it did.

Jack woke up that morning the distinct desire to be somewhere, to find the person on the other end of that potion. He hadn't even expected to feel that really, and yet there he was that afternoon, having traveled all the way from Horizon to Pandora Town. His sand kitten, Nala, who never had quite grown up as the whims of Pandora did seem to want her to, had insisted on trailing after him everywhere he went, so it wasn't long before he scooped her into his arms only for her to claw her way up to his shoulder where she burrowed herself into the hood of his short brown cloak. He thought he could practically feel their whereabouts, whoever they were, as though he were being drawn in. And he was afraid. Excited, too, but honestly really very afraid. It was by chance, or so he thought, that he ended up in front of the very pizza place that they were meant to be dining at, though he supposed the timing was convenient.

And as he paused, his blue eyes landing upon the tall, silver-haired man staring back at him. He was glaring, and Jack found his eyes widening a touch. It was them, he knew in a way he couldn't really explain, but the fondness he was meant to feel for somebody supposedly considered a true love simply wasn't there. Instead, there was the urge to scowl and the red-haired boy found himself doing just that, face twisting into that expression. "A terrible one," he pointed out, Nala's little head poking out from his hood to see just what it was Jack was suddenly feeling particularly distressed over.

Hatred was something that Sephiroth knew only too well. While he hated sparingly in his life, it was an emotion he was familiar with, though it usually made more sense than it did right now. He had come to hate scientists who poked and prodded at him for answers - who always had one more test, and who couldn't care less about what Sephiroth wanted.

He hated Genesis and Angeal for defecting and leaving him behind, and for not...

Sephiroth breathed out sharply, refocusing on what was in front of him. In his arms, Ugly Cat croaked a meow, swatting with his back feet for some purchase. "Clearly." Sephiroth said moodily, shifting the cat in his arms. "Why are you here? I don't understand." He was still confused as to why he was even in front of this pizza parlor. He was confused as to why he felt simultaneous hate for this stranger, as well as the deep-rooted assurance that he was supposed to be here.

"You have dirt on your face." Sephiroth pointed out rudely. Or maybe they were freckles. He wasn't sure, but the utter loathing in his gut had lowered his inhibitions enough for the words to pour out unfiltered.

Suddenly, it was like Jack didn’t want to be here at all, a frown tugging at the corners of his lips. He hadn’t even been given the chance to respond before the stranger suddenly pointed out some dirt on his face. Jack hesitated, but then his hand went up self-consciously to wipe at his face. “Better a bit of dirt than a head of white hair at twenty years old,” he told him, his voice quiet but there was no mistaking what he had said either.

Was that rude? That was definitely rude, but Jack wasn’t exactly a stranger to the idea of rudeness. He was typically less vocal of it, though. Kept his thoughts to himself and when he didn’t, it was all about playing stupid little tricks. Some more morbid than others, but today he found that he was feeling a little bit chatty.

“I’m supposed to be here. To meet somebody,” Jack finally said, his lips pressing to a fine line for a moment before he gestured vaguely in his direction. “Presumably you.” For pizza. There was nothing he wanted more than to suddenly turn and go the other way.

And then suddenly, the sand kitten in his hood crawled her way out and hopped the great distance from his shoulder to the floor with a little squeak before trotting toward the silver-haired man, staring up at him and his feline with wide eyes.

"At least my hair is natural." Sephiroth pointed out frigidly, making no move to indicate whether or not the rude stranger's remark had phased him. Really, it wasn't the worst thing he'd ever heard. Sephiroth was not vain about his appearance, nor was he the type to become irate if his looks were insulted. Frankly, even as incensed as he was at the moment, to become even angrier over such foolishness seemed juvenile.

"Why?" Sephiroth demanded coldly, nothing but tense lines and barely-concealed disgust. "Why am I here then? I don't want to be anywhere near you." His lip curled in a rare display of his feelings, marring the neutrality of his expression. Turning up his nose, Sephiroth released a haughty huff, ready to call this a waste of his time and leave.

He only hesitated because of the little cat that suddenly emerged from his enemy's clothing. It was very small, and... fluffy, and it was not captured within the loathing he felt for its owner. Instead, Sephiroth eyed it cautiously, automatically holding Ugly Cat tighter when the strange cat came close, at least until his own feline began to eagerly mew, feet thrashing as a bit of foam started to form on the corners of his mouth.

Sephiroth now recognized this as a sign of Ugly Cat's happiness, and he tentatively set the larger, less attractive cat down, watching cautiously as the hideous old beast strutted up to the kitten and began to pounce about like a fool.

Pursing his lips uncomfortably, Sephiroth crossed his arms, gripping his biceps as he observed the very clear signs of friendship blooming between the very pretty kitten and the very ugly cat, who was now drooling quite excessively in his glee.

"Are you sure it wasn't the cats who were supposed to meet? Perhaps we can leave them here for the afternoon." Sephiroth suggested bleakly. He didn't want to ruin Ugly Cat's day, as he had found himself very fond of the animal and was loathe to upset him... but he didn't want to have to endure the dirty-faced fool's presence, either.

Jack scrunched up his nose at that, so hard that even the scar on his face wrinkled a bit. Was this infuriating lunatic standing there suggesting that his hair was somehow not naturally red? Not that Jack hadn’t understood long since his arrival in Pandora that people used chemicals to make their hair different colors, but that had absolutely never been the case with Jack Jackson. His hair had simply always been this color.

But then his eyes were fixed on the cats, feeling understandably cautious as the silver-haired man’s rather horrible looking cat squirmed out of his arms. Or, rather, squirmed until his owner gave in and set him down so that he could now stand near his poor little Nala who was being far too overly curious for her own good. It took all of his self control not to move forward to scoop his kitten up again, but nothing seemed to be going terribly wrong yet, and it wasn’t the cat Jack felt so much disdain for.

Before he could say anything else, though, the doors to the pizza place suddenly burst open and a small quartet of string players came wandering out, serenading them with a lovely little classical piece of music while two other employees hurried toward the pair of them, uttering eager welcomes and hurrying to herd them, humans and cats alike, through the doors into the restaurant where they were promptly seated before they even knew what to do with themselves.

Jack sat there in his seat, staring across at the other man and looking a little bit bewildered while his little kitten sat on the floor beneath the table, nuzzling her face into the very ugly cat’s neck for a moment before trotting to sit herself next to the wall.
