    Year 7 - February 3rd

Upon awakening, Sephiroth was profoundly aware of several things at once.

First of all, uncomfortable was a gross understatement for how he felt, coming to on a frigid concrete rooftop. While his meager supplies did keep the worst of the elements off him, they didn't provide much comfort. Even one of the flat, understuffed laboratory cots he had grown up sleeping on would have been preferable.

Second, he was dimly aware that the side of his face was... damp. Lifting his head grudgingly, still blinking away sleep, he met the moss-green, ugly eyes of the... cat. The cat which had, since his arrival in Pandora Town several days ago, been following Sephiroth religiously from place to place. It was a hideous, old, scruffy thing. It's back legs were longer than the front ones, and it had snaggle teeth that erupted out of its mouth at all kinds of creative angles. It drooled incessantly, and foamed when it purred, which seemed to be always. Its eyes were crossed at the best of times. It looked like it had run into a concrete wall and lost.

He was becoming... almost fond of it.

Sitting up and allowing Ugly Cat to climb onto his lap, still vaguely fascinated that the animal showed no fear at all, Sephiroth rubbed his forehead, trying to dispel the frustrating, nonsensical urge to get up and go in some direction he didn't particularly understand. He ran his fingers through his hair as he fought to shake off the eerie sensation, gently working out a handful of tangles before releasing it from the loose tail he had tied it in for the night.

He shook his head again, but that urge was still there, so Sephiroth pushed himself onto his feet, organizing his small collection of belongings into a precise pile. Then, after a languid stretch, he headed over to the fire escape, swinging onto it with grace and, as an afterthought, gently scooping Ugly Cat up into his arms and holding it securely as they dropped down into the alleyway.

Letting the cat go, Sephiroth opted to cast caution into the wind and began to follow his mind's predetermined path, taking turns he had never seen before with utmost confidence and watching in confusion as the city around him seemed to adopt a larger, shinier, more expensive appearance. At his heels, Ugly Cat mewled pathetically, and Sephiroth had to agree with its sentiments.

This did not feel like a place he ought to be.

Coming to a stop at last, Sephiroth stared up at the sign for a... pizza parlor?

His mind seemed determined that this was right, but his intelligence rebelled. After all, he didn't have the money to waste on pizzas, no matter how good it smelled. This whole walk felt like nothing but a waste, and Sephiroth folded his arms with an irritated huff, staring at his immediate surroundings in hope that something might illuminate what was going on, only to feel his heart skip a beat...

Then turn to frozen lead in his chest as he locked eyes with someone he had never met in his life, yet who filled him with such a sense of loathing that his immediate instinct was to summon Masamune and skewer him with it. The only thing stopping him was the absolute absurdity of the thought, and the intellectual knowledge that this was a stranger, however much he instinctively hated him.

Looking between the horrible human being in front of him and the pizza parlor, Sephiroth reached down and scooped up Ugly Cat as a means to keep his hands busy before he tried to strangle the stranger. "Is this... a joke?" He asked coldly, making it clear by tone alone just what he would do if it was.

He knew exactly what it was he'd gone and done, and the moment he'd done it, he'd regretted it. Why was he so desperate to feel the happiness he had once lost? He had friends. Few of them, but everybody always said that you didn't need many. Guinevere, though, had been so much more than a friend and he didn't know that he could ever move past her. But he wanted to. He didn't want to feel sad anymore.

Had he gone to Misty Hollow and asked Jesus for his opinion, Jack had a feeling he would have advised against this in the first place. That was exactly the reason he hadn't done that. Even thinking about it on his own, it seemed ridiculous. Maybe he just thought it wouldn't actually work, but if it did, gods, if it did.

Jack woke up that morning the distinct desire to be somewhere, to find the person on the other end of that potion. He hadn't even expected to feel that really, and yet there he was that afternoon, having traveled all the way from Horizon to Pandora Town. His sand kitten, Nala, who never had quite grown up as the whims of Pandora did seem to want her to, had insisted on trailing after him everywhere he went, so it wasn't long before he scooped her into his arms only for her to claw her way up to his shoulder where she burrowed herself into the hood of his short brown cloak. He thought he could practically feel their whereabouts, whoever they were, as though he were being drawn in. And he was afraid. Excited, too, but honestly really very afraid. It was by chance, or so he thought, that he ended up in front of the very pizza place that they were meant to be dining at, though he supposed the timing was convenient.

And as he paused, his blue eyes landing upon the tall, silver-haired man staring back at him. He was glaring, and Jack found his eyes widening a touch. It was them, he knew in a way he couldn't really explain, but the fondness he was meant to feel for somebody supposedly considered a true love simply wasn't there. Instead, there was the urge to scowl and the red-haired boy found himself doing just that, face twisting into that expression. "A terrible one," he pointed out, Nala's little head poking out from his hood to see just what it was Jack was suddenly feeling particularly distressed over.

Hatred was something that Sephiroth knew only too well. While he hated sparingly in his life, it was an emotion he was familiar with, though it usually made more sense than it did right now. He had come to hate scientists who poked and prodded at him for answers - who always had one more test, and who couldn't care less about what Sephiroth wanted.

He hated Genesis and Angeal for defecting and leaving him behind, and for not...

Sephiroth breathed out sharply, refocusing on what was in front of him. In his arms, Ugly Cat croaked a meow, swatting with his back feet for some purchase. "Clearly." Sephiroth said moodily, shifting the cat in his arms. "Why are you here? I don't understand." He was still confused as to why he was even in front of this pizza parlor. He was confused as to why he felt simultaneous hate for this stranger, as well as the deep-rooted assurance that he was supposed to be here.

"You have dirt on your face." Sephiroth pointed out rudely. Or maybe they were freckles. He wasn't sure, but the utter loathing in his gut had lowered his inhibitions enough for the words to pour out unfiltered.

Suddenly, it was like Jack didn’t want to be here at all, a frown tugging at the corners of his lips. He hadn’t even been given the chance to respond before the stranger suddenly pointed out some dirt on his face. Jack hesitated, but then his hand went up self-consciously to wipe at his face. “Better a bit of dirt than a head of white hair at twenty years old,” he told him, his voice quiet but there was no mistaking what he had said either.

Was that rude? That was definitely rude, but Jack wasn’t exactly a stranger to the idea of rudeness. He was typically less vocal of it, though. Kept his thoughts to himself and when he didn’t, it was all about playing stupid little tricks. Some more morbid than others, but today he found that he was feeling a little bit chatty.

“I’m supposed to be here. To meet somebody,” Jack finally said, his lips pressing to a fine line for a moment before he gestured vaguely in his direction. “Presumably you.” For pizza. There was nothing he wanted more than to suddenly turn and go the other way.

And then suddenly, the sand kitten in his hood crawled her way out and hopped the great distance from his shoulder to the floor with a little squeak before trotting toward the silver-haired man, staring up at him and his feline with wide eyes.

"At least my hair is natural." Sephiroth pointed out frigidly, making no move to indicate whether or not the rude stranger's remark had phased him. Really, it wasn't the worst thing he'd ever heard. Sephiroth was not vain about his appearance, nor was he the type to become irate if his looks were insulted. Frankly, even as incensed as he was at the moment, to become even angrier over such foolishness seemed juvenile.

"Why?" Sephiroth demanded coldly, nothing but tense lines and barely-concealed disgust. "Why am I here then? I don't want to be anywhere near you." His lip curled in a rare display of his feelings, marring the neutrality of his expression. Turning up his nose, Sephiroth released a haughty huff, ready to call this a waste of his time and leave.

He only hesitated because of the little cat that suddenly emerged from his enemy's clothing. It was very small, and... fluffy, and it was not captured within the loathing he felt for its owner. Instead, Sephiroth eyed it cautiously, automatically holding Ugly Cat tighter when the strange cat came close, at least until his own feline began to eagerly mew, feet thrashing as a bit of foam started to form on the corners of his mouth.

Sephiroth now recognized this as a sign of Ugly Cat's happiness, and he tentatively set the larger, less attractive cat down, watching cautiously as the hideous old beast strutted up to the kitten and began to pounce about like a fool.

Pursing his lips uncomfortably, Sephiroth crossed his arms, gripping his biceps as he observed the very clear signs of friendship blooming between the very pretty kitten and the very ugly cat, who was now drooling quite excessively in his glee.

"Are you sure it wasn't the cats who were supposed to meet? Perhaps we can leave them here for the afternoon." Sephiroth suggested bleakly. He didn't want to ruin Ugly Cat's day, as he had found himself very fond of the animal and was loathe to upset him... but he didn't want to have to endure the dirty-faced fool's presence, either.

Jack scrunched up his nose at that, so hard that even the scar on his face wrinkled a bit. Was this infuriating lunatic standing there suggesting that his hair was somehow not naturally red? Not that Jack hadn’t understood long since his arrival in Pandora that people used chemicals to make their hair different colors, but that had absolutely never been the case with Jack Jackson. His hair had simply always been this color.

But then his eyes were fixed on the cats, feeling understandably cautious as the silver-haired man’s rather horrible looking cat squirmed out of his arms. Or, rather, squirmed until his owner gave in and set him down so that he could now stand near his poor little Nala who was being far too overly curious for her own good. It took all of his self control not to move forward to scoop his kitten up again, but nothing seemed to be going terribly wrong yet, and it wasn’t the cat Jack felt so much disdain for.

Before he could say anything else, though, the doors to the pizza place suddenly burst open and a small quartet of string players came wandering out, serenading them with a lovely little classical piece of music while two other employees hurried toward the pair of them, uttering eager welcomes and hurrying to herd them, humans and cats alike, through the doors into the restaurant where they were promptly seated before they even knew what to do with themselves.

Jack sat there in his seat, staring across at the other man and looking a little bit bewildered while his little kitten sat on the floor beneath the table, nuzzling her face into the very ugly cat’s neck for a moment before trotting to sit herself next to the wall.

Blinking in alarm, Sephiroth tensed as the door burst open and a small band emerged, playing ugly music and harassing them both into the building. Part of him wanted dearly to lash out and fight them all off tooth and nail, but Ugly Cat was a good few feet away from him now, and he had no way to reach the feline. So, with grudging tolerance, Sephiroth allowed himself to be veritably shoved into the pizza parlour and all but pushed into a seat.

Twisting in his chair to look under the table, he watched as the two cats, clearly enamored with each other, snuggled. When the kitten trotted off, Ugly Cat merrily pursued her with his signature, ugly croak of a purr building up in his throat and shaking dribbles of foam and saliva from his half-open mouth. He looked hideous, but he was clearly having a very good time, and the other cat was being nice to him.

So, Sephiroth folded his arms and leaned as far back in his seat as possible, fixing the ugly dirty-faced man with a searing glare. "Does your expression ever range from stupidly confused?" He spat venomously, visibly bristling. "You look prepubescent. Are you malnourished? If you cannot afford to nourish yourself, you should not have a cat. You seem extremely immature."

While Nala and her terribly hideous feline friend were having a wonderful time under the table, Jack would have rather been literally anywhere else but where he was now. The silver-haired man stared at him with a look of utter disdain and the redhead certainly didn't look eager to be there either as he listened to him thoroughly insult his expression, his eating habits, and his ability to take care of a cat.

"Really. That is incredibly rich," he started, hearing others use the term for just this purpose. Jack never had, but it seemed appropriate. "Given your diseased cat under the table. What have you done to that poor animal?"

Really, though, should he have felt concerned for Nala? Jack had nothing against the other cat, itself, but there was no denying how concerning the poor creature's condition was. It was literally drooling.

Normally, Sephiroth would not have been offended by the implication that Ugly Cat was diseased. He had thought the same thing when the feline had first appeared at one of his rooftop camps, ugly and matted and utterly filthy. It had taken more than one trip (that he definitely could not afford) to the veterinarian to convince Sephiroth that the cat was actually quite healthy. Old, yes, but healthy.

But, he already disliked the man before him, so he didn't feel particularly charitable at the moment. As a result, the SOLDIER visibly bristled for the second time in five minutes. "He's probably healthier than you." He spat moodily, all the while feeling, in the back of his mind, that this was absurdly out of character for himself. Sephiroth had never been so vocal or visible about his disdain for someone.

"He's just an unattractive animal. I'm sure you may understand that on a personal level." And, for some reason, that utterly uncalled for remark was what cut through his annoyance, and Sephiroth looked momentarily alarmed, and then somewhat chastened. "...I apologize, that was unkind of me..."

He simply couldn't fathom the idea that anybody would look at him and decide that poorly looked after cat under the table was healthier that he was. Not that Jack was the healthiest person alive, but he was breathing normally, his skin wasn't covered in grime, and his hair wasn't stringy or greasy. He certainly didn't look like he was a moment away from dropping dead, which he thought may have really been a possibility for that cat.

The apology, though, took him somewhat off guard and Jack slowly furrowed his brow, a look of both distaste and suspicion on his face as he stared back at the silver-haired man. "Really, was it? I couldn't tell, I'm not even sure what your form of kindness looks like."

All Jack had seen since coming face to face with him was an utter lack of kindness. Not that the redhead had been particularly kind, himself. At least Nala was enjoying herself.

The SOLDIER pursed his lips angrily as the horrible human being rejected his apology and continued to insult him. His fists clenched where he had his arms folded across his chest, and the leather of his gloves creaked softly. Staring across the table with a gaze that clearly indicated his desire to jump across and throttle the ginger, Sephiroth finally took a deep, slow breath. He vaguely asked any available deity for patience.

"You're not being much better." He pointed out angrily. "You've been extremely rude." He looked away, focusing on the cats who had ambled off across the floor. The kitten was walking in dainty, straight lines. Ugly Cat was veering back and forth drunkenly with dreamy enthusiasm. "You insulted my cat." Sephiroth added irritably. He preferred to think of Ugly Cat as his own being who was merely a companion, but he didn't want to voice that opinion to this man, who would probably mock it.

Sephiroth twitched in surprise when a waiter suddenly appeared, sporting a large, circular... food. Staring at it suspiciously, he counted up the various vegetables and meats on the surface. "...What is this?" He demanded moodily. Looking up at the idiot, Sephiroth narrowed his feline eyes. "And don't make fun of me." He warned with a slightly petulant tone.

"I'm sorry, you're right," he suddenly realized, his gaze following the other man's toward the cats. "That's not fair to your cat." He had nothing against the cat himself, of course, just the idiot trying and failing miserably to do a good job at taking care of him.

He opened his mouth to say more when the circular food was placed in front of them and Jack looked just about as dumbfounded by it as the other did. For how long he had been in Pandora for, it was rather telling that he still didn't know what a pizza was.

"... I want to, I really do. But I don't know what it is either." He hesitated a moment, flicking his gaze to the utensils that had been left for them and back. What was he supposed to do? Use his hands? No, those must have been there for a reason, which was why Jack reached for a fork and proceeded to stab a slice of the food and yank it away from the rest of the pie.

"He's a very good cat." Sephiroth agreed, looking momentarily placated. "Your cat is also aesthetically pleasing. She appears to have extremely dense fur, which suggests a desert-dwelling mammal." He glanced at the two felines again. While the fool in front of him was clearly hapless and a disgrace to his species, he apparently had not managed to kill his animal, and Sephiroth supposed that had to count for something.

The circular food was more than enough to shake off the last of his immediate loathing, as Sephiroth was just as clueless as his unwanted company with regards to the manner by which it was supposed to be eaten. It seemed extremely unhygienic to use his bare hands (the thought sent a shudder up his spine), so Sephiroth followed the idiot's lead and grabbed a fork, pulling a slab of the thing away from the whole and onto his own plate, where it sat, looking confusing and frustrating.

He hoped it wasn't a finger food. Sephiroth had been raised in the sterile environment of a laboratory, and as such he had a mild compulsion already to wash his hands more than strictly necessary. The few times anyone had tried to make him eat food with his hands, he'd felt alarmingly nauseous for hours afterwards. Probably because of the germs.

"This is a very strange food." He complained, cutting a corner off of it and tentatively taking a bite.

    It was very strange, yes.

    But alarmingly good.

Well, he wasn't insulting Nala, so Jack supposed the unwanted stranger could have been quite a lot higher on his list of people he hated. It would have been quite impressive had he actually made it all the way to the top, but that slot was reserved for somebody else already and he was certain nobody else would ever reach so high in the list. Though the more he sat here with his company, the less certain he became of that.

There was hope, though. He had, after all, called Nala aesthetically pleasing.

"And you cat has ... potential ..." He wasn't sure that was true or not, but there was a small, sympathetic frown on his lips. "If only his owner would stop starving him and groom him a bit."

Back to the circular pie with its meats and vegetables. Jack watched the man on the other side of the table cut a slice, and suddenly there was the incredible urge not to be eating the same way that he was, and so he placed his fork down again only to pick up his slice and bite a piece off of the end. Strange was certainly the right word for it, but so was good.

"Mm," he agreed distractedly as he swallowed that piece down. "If you don't want anymore ..." Well, it was so good, Jack was certain he could eat it all on his own.

"He eats more than a feline of his size and age should, it just doesn't do anything. And I brush him daily - and I clean his face." Sephiroth snapped irritably, looking outraged that this... this horrible person was implying that he wasn't doing his level best to provide everything that Ugly Cat needed to be healthy. At this point, he was feeding the cat better than himself. It wasn't his fault if Ugly Cat just wouldn't gain weight.

His expression tightened when the horrible ginger picked up the slab of food with his hands and took a bite. It seemed absolutely barbaric, and disgusting, and Sephiroth stared down at his portion with a combination of rage and nausea. He knew he was hungry - nearly starving, actually - but it was... gross.

What the idiot was doing was gross and it was bothering him and Sephiroth felt a sudden burst of shame for his years of training, because a red-haired ignoramus was getting the better of him. "I..." He was hungry, but now he wasn't. Sephiroth sighed miserably and shrugged his shoulders. "Go right ahead..." He muttered sadly.

"Really? Honestly, you would never know," Jack murmured almost sadly, feeling for the poor feline and regarding the other man with a fair bit of judgement behind his eyes. Almost as much judgement as he received in return for picking up his food with nothing more than his bare hands and taking a bite.

Maybe it shouldn't have amused him so much, the way the man instantaneously lost his appetite, but there was almost a mischievous gleam in Jack's eyes as he reached across the table to tug his plate back toward him, promptly dumping the rest of the absolutely generous man's slice of red circle pie onto his own slice of red circle pie.

"Yes, well, I wouldn't know that you perform basic personal hygiene except you informed me. Not that I quite believe you. You're repulsive and a barbarian." Sephiroth snapped irritably, watching in abject misery as the horrible person stole his slice of the meat and vegetable pie. He folded his arms across his chest, stubbornly ignoring his protesting stomach. He would just have to find food somewhere else. He was not showing weakness in front of this... disgusting excuse for a man.

He sniffed derisively, turning away to watch the cats, who were now happily grooming each other. Ugly Cat was absolutely soaked from his chin to his chest due to his excessive salivating, and Sephiroth bit back a sigh. He would have to wash him after this, which meant sneaking him into a public bathroom. He hated public bathrooms. They were filthy and they made him uncomfortable.

"I'm going to stab you with this fork if you keep looking at me like that." Sephiroth threatened mildly. "I'll use it to pin you to the wall and leave you there." He added conversationally, turning his flaring green eyes back on the awful human being. "I loathe you."

"I have to wonder how you would react around a real barbarian," he murmured distractedly, though his focus seemed to be on his meat and vegetable pie. Or, well, his unwanted company's meat and vegetable pie, which just happened to be on his own plate now.

But then his words, his threat, gave him pause and he looked up, staring at him, a frown tugging at the corners of his lips. "Then maybe we should be cutting this short," Jack suddenly said, a glint of mischief and determination in his eye. "Nala!" he called, and already, the pretty sand kitten was perking up from where she was busy grooming the ugly cat. Jack was going to have brush her teeth and her tongue, wasn't he?

And then, suddenly, he was grabbing for the pie. The entire pie. The entire tray, in fact, clearly with the intention of taking the entire thing with him.

The horrible person went to grab the pie, and Sephiroth grabbed his wrist in a grip that was just on the cusp of breaking bone, feline eyes glittering and unpleasantly. "Drop. It." He seethed softly. He was not coming out of this hellish experience with nothing to show for it, and he would fight to the death for the prize.

Plus, he was looking for any reason right now to throw this wretched man through a window.

Jack froze as he felt his tight grip around his wrist, blue eyes meeting his, having widened a small fraction. It didn't take them long to narrow, though, into a glare that made it plenty clear just how Jack felt about him and how he felt about the idea of dropping the pie. "You don't even like it, you think it's weird."
