    NOVEMBER 23RD, YEAR 108 | EMMA SWAN'S HOUSE | @Alice Liddell (@Emma Swan)

Two down, several more to go but there was all the time in the world to work towards it. Crowley knew now that It was back and It hadn’t forgotten what he’d done, It had sufficiently spooked him and now It was letting him stew a little. The same went for Wanda, she’d be getting a visit from her brainwashed little friend with the superpowers any day now. Today it was Emma’s turn to have her recent past catch up with her. Just like with the others It had lingered and watched and taken in he life in the new world, her routines and patterns and then It had sought out those she was close to, people she cared about and there was one very obvious option.

There was a little girl who appeared to be under Emma’s care. Her name was Alice and her mind was a veritable wonderland of terrifying monsters and strange sights. It could have wandered around in there all day picking and choosing what would lure the little girl to her doom. Because that was how It was going to get to Emma Swan, It was going to go through this unusual child, It would infect her with fear until it coursed through her veins and then when her flesh was salted it would consume her and then cast her remains conveniently where Emma could find the bones and her pretty little dress. It would watch Emma despair and rage and then It would take Emma too, once It had played with her enough that her flesh was worth consuming.

But first things first, the child.

It crawled along the water pipes, bubbling up through the kitchen sink. A stained white silk glove over a hand slithered up the inside of the sink. Long fingers curled elegantly over the rim and It hauled Itself upwards just enough that a bright yellow eye glinted in the darkness of the sink bowl, peering over the rim around the room. It was night, so late that it was almost becoming early and outside the only lights were the orange glow of streetlights filtered through the kitchen window, illuminating the room a muddy orange-red colour. In the darkness It emerged, unfurling Itself upright in the kitchen as The Clown. Red pom-pom boots seemed to hover a centimetre from the ground and without bothering to walk It glided along the corridor towards the little girls room.

In the darkness it changed, the towering form of the clown began to shrink, shedding feet of height until a set of elegant four paws with claws sharp as razors padded softly along the ground. A pink button nose squeezed through the crack in the doorframe and the door and nosed it open. The dark malformed shape of a cat strolled through the shadows, disappeared beneath the bed that Alice slept so soundly in. Then at the very head of it and floating about six inches above the bed itself, pink and purple stripes like a ribbon rustled softly through the air. They twisted and curled into a big bushy tail that twitched lazily and under the arch revealed a bright golden yellow eye nestled above a set of gloriously white teeth. The teeth curved upwards into a grin.

”One, two! One, two!” The cat purred enthusiastically to wake her, ”And through and through! The vorpal blade went snicker-snack! He left it dead-” An eerie sound like a blade sinking into flesh again and again drifted around the bedroom. The cats tail lifted revealing its fully stripey body and smug grinning face, ”-and with its head he went galumphing back!”

For the moment, Alice slept quietly and happily. Emma had made her that wondrous delight hot chocolate before bed and read her a story, one that involved a far-off place with witches and wizards. It wasn’t long before the girl had drifted off to sleep, soothed by the lady’s voice. She was ever so grateful to have Emma in her life, and it showed, with the girl either lovingly forcing the elder blonde to wear one of her handmade gifts or answer endless questions about the world around them.

But her peaceful slumber was about to be interrupted, and not by who she thought it was.

The girl awoke with a jolt, letting out an ‘oh!’ of surprise as she sleepily focused on the very familiar intruder above her and the snipping that sounded all too real. Pink and purple stripes adorned its body and it revealed that grin that had once infuriated her so much. “Why, it’s you! The Cheshire Cat!” Alice said, half annoyed but also half curious.

Unfortunately for her, she had remembered her encounter with who she thought was the White Rabbit in Pandopolis. Although sadly it hadn’t been the rabbit she was looking for, she was now more inclined to believe that Wonderland’s inhabitants could somehow reach Pandora. “I must say, I’ve never heard that riddle before…how did you get here?” Even though Wonderland was nonsense in her opinion, she couldn’t deny a familiar figure from it brought her some comfort and her tone was subsequently softer.

As predicted the sound was enough to rouse the girl from her slumber, she awoke with a jolt and It watched her as she took in the pink and purple stripes and recognised the familiar shape of a creature she called the Cheshire Cat. What a curious creature it was too, there were others like it inside her head as well, things like the March Hare and the White Rabbit and a mad man she called the Mad Hatter. Of all of them though the Cat appealed to It for several reasons, not least of which it was the most nonsensical of them all and there was already a streak of utter madness in the cat that would help Alice believe it was all real, would lull her mind into the right place before the realshow began. It would help her fear.

“The same way as you did. I came through here and there.” The Cat grinned and preened itself primly before pausing, a confused expression on his face, ”I’m still in two minds about it all myself.” And with a smile the cat stretched out until it was two cats. The second cat rolled lazily through the air with a chuckle and then promptly disappeared behind the bedpost and didn’t come out the other side. ’In fact, Alice...I’m not feeling myself at all these days.” The first cat explained.

Perhaps it was just her imagination or perhaps it wasn’t but the cat was changing little by little. The cute little pink paws now had full length claws, the big grinning perfectly straight teeth were a little crooked and sharper at the edges. They were yellowing from their dazzling white, starting to match the yellow colour of the cats eyes. The cat was becoming more realistic, less fluffy and more mangy looking, it shed weight in a few tufts of loose fur until protruding skinny flesh began to peek through making the cat look gaunt and sickly. Around her the room seemed to grow darker, the kind of darkness that cloyed and suffocated whilst at the same time felt terrifying vast, like her room was falling away and there was a dark void behind it. The now skeletal cat with tight pink and purple flesh pulled over its bones drifted gracefully through the blackness.

”Have you ever considered floating?” The cat inquired and now its voice too was becoming lower, deeper, filled with a feline purr that hadn’t been there before. The kind of voice that could inspire a nightmare.

“Here and there? You mean those vines?” Alice queried, watching the feline, hoping that for once the cat would make at least some sort of sense. But, as usual, the Wonderland resident was in the mood for playing games, as it multiplied, the second cat rolling through the air and ultimately disappearing from view.

Funny, I don’t remember the Cheshire Cat being able to do that…’ She briefly thought. However, nothing in the cat’s world made sense, so why should anything new it did be such a surprise?

“Yes, when I first came here, I didn’t know what to…” Alice began to say, before she noticed the cat’s appearance. Were its teeth always that…real? Surely they weren’t ever as sharp as that! Perhaps Pandora had some sort of effect on such nonsensical creations?

However, her lips curved into a worried frown as the cat began to change even further. The once plump feline now look starved, completely skin and bone, its fur shedding and ribs protruding through its skin.

Not only that, but her room seemed to slowly vanish into an endless void, akin to when Wonderland had begun to vanish around her before she had woken up that time. She pulled the quilt up, eyes drifting around the blank space.

Alice ignored the cat’s question, but her head whipped back to it as she noted that something was terribly wrong with its voice; gone was the light, carefree tone, replaced by something…something else.

Instead, she cried out, “Mister Cheshire Cat, this isn’t funny! Stop this now!” Her fists clutched the bedsheets as she watched the cat glide across the darkness and tried her best to remain brave. For now, she still believed this was some cruel trick of the cat’s, intended to frustrate her. She was glad Dinah wasn’t here with her, as there was no telling how she would have reacted.

”Stop what?” The cat inquired as it drifted gracefully through the dark void, ”Floating?” It inquired and pulled back skin lips to grin, all teeth and malice and hate, ”Why Alice, that’s impossible. You see we all float down here.

The cat chuckled, a deep rumble that seemed far deeper and more cavernous than a mere cat should be capable. In fact the laugh rumbled low and ominous around the void. And just as Alice had once tumbled down a long rabbit hole and into Wonderland, she began to tumble now too, only it was her bed that was tumbling now, drifting and floating in a slow descent down the endless black hole the Cheshire Cat was leading her down. Around her strange things floated by too. Here there was a red balloon with the words I <3 Wonderland‘ written on it in big white letters, then there was a pair of green gumboot wellingtons and a little yellow rain slicker, a christmas present that had been torn open with a jack in the box haphazardly peeking out of it. The jack in the box waved to Alice as it tumbled past and then gnashed sharp teeth at her before slithering back inside the gift box.

Alongside all the strange things that were floating in the well of darkness there were figures too. They were in the distance, illuminated by a strange orange-yellow light that seemed to have no source. It shone down on them, their blind faces tilted up towards the light, clothing floating like they were drowning in water around them. One drifted a little closer to the floating bed and the girls white-eyed face snapped towards Alice. As she turned her body floated around too revealing half of one side of her had been eaten away. Her tongue lolled down what remained of her cheek and she smiled at Alice.

”It’s true you know.” The little girl who had once been the missing Kacey Pandey from Misty Hollow said, ”We all float. You can float too Alice! Float with us!” She reached out with the bloodied stump of an arm to grasp for Alice, trying to claw her way through the void to get to the bed.

Someone else appeared on the other side of the bed, this time it was a boy with dark hair, a plaid shirt and a red and grey striped scarf. He was slightly older than the little girl was but when he spoke the light shone through his mouth and out of his empty eye sockets. He was smiling blindly too, dried blood that had crusted onto his cheeks flaked off and drifted upward which seemed logically at odds with the vague sensation of floating downwards.

”Yes Alice, you must join us! Come float, but not just yet.” The boy promised, ”First you must tell Emma something secret.” He drifted towards the bed, clutching with corpse-grey hands with broken nails at the bed sheets, dragging himself closer and closer to Alice. The closer he got the more a sense of impending doom and the stink of rotten flesh grew. ”Tell her Henry says hi.” The boy grinned.

Horror shone as bright as day on Alice’s face as the “cat” smiled, its teeth hideously sharp still, the smile a dangerous one. The girl shrank back into the pillows, praying that this was just a dream, that it wasn’t real. It couldn’t be.

She cried out in terror as her bed began to tumble down a hole, one that reminded of her of the burrow to Wonderland, only this was far more sinister. It was still in front of her, leading the way. Alice wanted to escape, maybe leap out of the bed – but where would she land? She noticed the various objects around her, including red balloon with words painted onto it and wellington boots. The most unnerving object was a jack-in-the-box, peering out of torn wrapping paper; she flinched as it bared its teeth at her.

“Why are you doing this? Why are-“
Alice began to shout to the figure, who she knew now could not be the same cat she’d encountered before. It had to be an imposter; it was never this cruel.

She squinted at the lights scattered in the distance; they looked like…no, they couldn’t be! As a few drifted closer she could see they were children, just like her. But something was terribly wrong; their faces were chalk-white and listless.

Alice drew back as one, a girl, floated closer, a living corpse. It was as the girl turned her head however, did she let out a scream at the grotesque sight. Did…did whatever that thing impersonating the cat do this? Tears streamed down her face at the state of the girl, a mixture of fear and sadness on her face.

She scrambled backwards as the girl reached out with what was left of her arm, almost falling out of the bed, but regretted it as another person, a boy this time, came to the other side of her bed. She eyed him, her vision slightly blurred with tears as he drew closer.

Her eyes widened at the mention of Miss Swan as she watched the boy grip onto the bed, the most nauseous stench growing stronger as he approached. Who was this, and what did they want with Miss Swan?

“Henry? Who are you?!” She looked around for the cat, “Who is this, what did you do to him? To all these children?! I won’t let you near Miss Swan! I won’t!” Although she was still terrified, the mention of Emma had reignited a protective fire in the girl, one that wouldn’t be easily stomped out.

The grinning cat was watching from the dark void around them as Alice reacted to the dead children, floating casually at the foot of her bed as the decaying and rotting form of Henry clawed at her bed covers and passed the message along. The boy didn’t answer any of Alice’s questions and in fact as she sought out the cat once more henry’s pale corpse-like eyes drifted vacantly and he began to float away from her, back into the gloom once more along with the little girl and the other floating children until once again there was just darkness, the bed, Alice and the grinning cat. The cat chuckled, its deep strange voice shifting in pitch, rising upwards into a hysterical cackling laugh that didn’t seem to fit the cat at all and in fact seemed to echo and reverberate all though the strange darkness. As though the darkness were alive and moving in response somehow…

The cat rolled over as It laughed at Alice’s bravery, stretching out unnaturally through the air like it had been liquefied and was being stirred in water. Then suddenly as it spun through the air it burst like a balloon. POP! Little burst flutters of flesh scattered to the darkness and where the cat had been suddenly there was a clown hanging onto the end of her bed with a huge bulbous white forehead, shocks of bright coppery red hair swept up and away from the face and he was wearing a creamy-white silk suit with three little dirty pom-poms down the front. Silk gloves were torn and ripped at the fingertips where huge catlike claws protruded and clung into the bottom of the bed. The clown seemed to be grinning in much the same way as the cat had been grinning.

”Too late, little girl.” Pennywise beamed cheerfully, ”She’s mine, and you will be too!” Without warning It launched itself up the bed horrifyingly fast. But It didn’t simply crawl, it juddered up the bed at her like there was strobe lighting coming from somewhere, like it wasn’t moving through all the intervening space and was defying all laws of physics. Just as the cats clawed hands reached out to slash at her face that was when it all ended like the sudden ending of a nightmare when it became to overwhelming and the mind woke up. Or worse…just before you died in a dream..

The clown was gone. Alice was alone. The bed was still in her room as though it had never gone anywhere. All there was was the linger message in her mind that Henry had said hi.

The boy, Henry, ignored her question, and soon disappeared along with the girl, back into the darkness, leaving her alone, with it.

Although she knew her attempt to challenge the thing would be pointless, if it were capable of such atrocities, a little girl wouldn't scare it. Her heart pounded as it merely grinned, before bursting into laughter that swifly pitched upwards and stretching its body in a way that wasn’t natural. Both the sound and sight were unbearable, and Alice went to cover her ears just as the cat burst.

BURST, right in front of her, into pieces. Flesh rained down in front of her, like bits of a balloon.

The girl let out a sob, but the sound died in her throat as the cat was replaced swiftly by a clown. But not an ordinary clown. Was this what the thing really looked like? She continued to cry, noticing it had an identical smile to the cats', predatory and razor-like. Claws that definitely weren’t human dug into the edge of the bed.

What was it? What was it?

“No…” Alice went to whisper at its claims, but never got to say more as it suddenly lunged towards her, in a way that wasn’t just a normal movement, but the girl didn’t know or even care enough to describe it. All she could focus on was the grinning face getting closer and closer, and the claws reaching out, ready to slash her to ribbons.

Alice clamped her eyes shut, screaming repeatedly as she thrashed about in the bed, feebly attempting to defend herself from the attack. She didn’t notice the room had reverted to its normal state, as though it had only been a nightmare. A vivid, horrible nightmare.

Sleep was a luxury Emma could ill afford any more, Emma could only sleep when exhausted. When she felt the tiredness in her chest, in how she breathed and her thoughts dragged by in slow motion, she slunk to a quiet spot and curled up. On good days she'd get three hours, on bad days too. Should she doze later on she'd wake as soon as sleep came with a start, always as fast as if a gunshot had sounded, heart beating fast and breathing as if she'd just surfaced from deep water? After that, it was time to get up, to do something, keep moving… do push-ups, punch a bag a few times.

Anything but leaving herself open to the nightmares…

So when the screams came, Emma was up on her feet and raced toward Alice’s room. Concern clear on her face, her bright green eyes alight with worry standing in the doorway, quickly scanning the room to try and pinpoint any danger or anything that might be harming Alice, but all she saw was Alice sitting bolt upright, trashing back and forward and screaming her little heart out.

Quickly as she can manage, Emma ran to Alice’s side and grabbed her gently by the shoulders hoping her touch grounds her in reality “Alice?! Alice?! What's wrong?! What happened?!

Emma was just about ready to pick her up and run straight to the nearest hospital if she didn’t stop.

The girl kept her eyes tightly shut, her throat becoming hoarse from screaming so much. But it only got even louder as she felt someone, or something grab her. She didn’t even register that it was Emma speaking to her. “No…” Alice cried brokenly, “No…please…” She raised her hands as if to swipe away imaginary fingers grabbing her. “You can’t have me…or Miss Swan…you…you’re not a cat, or even a clown…you’re a monster!"

She wriggled in Emma’s grip, gradually slowing as she became fatigued, her screams stopping. But she didn’t open her eyes to look at the older lady, instead she curled over and buried her head into her fists, sobbing loudly.

Is this what I’m like when I have my nightmares?”
The thought flitted through Emma’s mind as she spied Alice’s reaction to her, trashing and screaming lost in her terrors. Emma had recently become increasingly familiar with the feeling, and it was not one she would wish on her worst enemy, let alone Alice.

She had hoped her voice alone would be enough to bring her back to the waking world, but whatever nightmare she was having was a doozy, one strong enough to keep living through it even after waking, the screaming had stopped which was good, but it certainly wasn’t through lack of trying, now she graduated to rambling something that Emma couldn’t exactly make out...something about a monster cat?

Whatever it was, Emma realised that she was going about it the wrong way, her worry for Alice overcoming her and caused her to shake the younger woman roughly. That was a bad move, Emma never claimed to be good at this whole dealing with kids thing…

...But she knew what she wanted whenever this happened to her when she was a child.

She let go of the struggling Alice as she sat down at the edge of the bed and as gently as she possibly could draw her arms around the girl, holding her close and when she stopped wiggling, she moved in to place her chin on her forehead and stroked her back hoping that her calm heartbeat would sync up with Alice's panicked heartbeat

“Shhhh, it’s over Emma whispered softly gently rocking Alice “It’s over now,. you’re back, nothing going to hurt you. It’s over. You’re awake. I'm here"
