Finally, a mission. Neo was starting to get cabin fever, cooped up in the castle. It got boring, but apparently she had to be careful because otherwise Salem would get mad if any of the Grimm spotted her when she wasn't around. So when she was called into the Room, and given a mission, Neo could've screamed in relief. There was only so long she could go without doing anything at all, in the end, and what was the point of working for Salem to fill time if it just meant that she was bored in a creepy castle, instead of being bored elsewhere? So yay, a mission.

Except she wasn't doing it alone.

    Mercury was with her.

    Hooray.

Neo had worked with Mercury before, fought by his side, and she had to admit he was good. But he wasn't anything special in the end. Just a kid with robotic legs and a lot of attitude, that Neo would've liked, if it hadn't gotten Roman killed. But she didn't blame Mercury for that. It wasn't his fault.

    Anyway.

A mission. Escorting some Grimm to a town on the edge of the woodland, so that they could massacre every person there. Apparently there were some Huntsmen that were taking action, or this particular town had some kind of defence, because so far the Grimm had been unsuccessful. So, if Mercury and Neo came across resistance, their job was to eliminate it. With prejudice. They were halfway there, skimming across the ground, keeping pace with the Grimm, when Neo realised how bored she was.

Reaching out her parasol, she tapped Mercury on the shoulder, until he responded.

Being sent on missions was old news to Mercury. He had adjusted to being sent out on Salem's whims for seemingly no reason at all. He knew his place and he knew what was expected of him, even if the thought it was stupid or boring. His dark eyes cut across the area around them as they moved, noting... nothing. There was nothing here. There was nothing to see, nothing to do, and nothing to worry about. Making sure some Grimm got to a town so they could kill everyone there. Sure, why not?

He looked about as bored as he felt. There was a bit of a slouch to his posture and his hands were stuffed into the pockets of his pants anytime they stopped to take a look around. He was with the mute girl, the one all pink and frilly yet not, who couldn't or wouldn't speak. Mercury wasn't sure which but he actually preferred her to his other options of "team mate". At least he didn't have to put up with her annoying voice or anything of that nature. Silence was certainly preferred.

Mercury wasn't fully prepared when Neo tapped him on his shoulder with her damn umbrella. He stopped and looked down at her with that same unamused sort of expression he always wore. "What?" He spoke directly and didn't really care if she got offended by it. He wasn't here to make friends. He was here to handle whatever problem the Grimm were having and that was it.

Perhaps Neo had seen something though. He looked back around but nothing seemed out of place except for the Grimm they were escorting. So what the fuck was going on?

Most people she had worked with knew that a bored Neo was a dangerous Neo. Mostly because Roman knew that, and tended to warn people that she should always have something to do, or else she'd start messing with things for the sake of messing with them. Watching things blow up was fun, and people had the choice of either giving her stuff to blow up, or watching her blow up things which they probably didn't want blown up. It wasn't common in Salem's castle, because there was always something to do, someone to fight, somewhere to explore, something.

    This was not it.

Neo grinned back at Mercury, and shrugged, waving her hand back and forth. She knew that Mercury tended to hate being disturbed, which is one of the things that made bothering him so fun. Admittedly, it also made it dangerous, because he tended to shoot people that bothered him too much, but hey.

    Occupational hazard.

Mercury knew a bit about Neo but he wasn’t as well versed as some people. Mostly because their interactions had been a little on the light side and they had both been side minions (if there was anything to be said along those lines). He really didn’t have much of an opinion of her, other than she was a serviceable fighter. Much better than those idiots at Beacon.

Neo grinned at him and waved between them, trying to suggest something but Mercury wasn’t sure he wanted to understand. He may have been acting stupider than he normally was but that was because Mercury preferred that people underestimated him. It was easier to surprise someone when you really needed to. Mercury liked to be as prepared as possible in all situations.

”I don’t speak mime.” The words were gruffly spoken and straight forward, intended to shoulder her to the side verbally so she would stop bugging him. Mercury didn’t always prefer silence but they were on a mission and he really didn’t want to fuck anything up. Not when Salem was going to hold him personally responsible for this. Besides, he really had nothing to say. There was a gesture telling her to leave him alone but at least it wasn’t rude. For now.

Neo rolled her eyes, twice. No one spoke mime, and the lack of people that understood her in Pandora was starting to get on her nerves. Surely it couldn't be that hard? Plenty of people could get their messages across without needing to speak. For a while, she had been one of them. For a moment, she wondered if Mercury was doing this deliberately, to try and get on her nerves. She was pretty sure that he was never as dumb as he played at, otherwise Cinder never would've recruited him. And he must be a better fighter than he normally displayed, because everyone had heard about his father.

    The father that he killed.

    Honestly, Neo could respect that.

Just like how she could respect Mercury possibly playing dumb to get under her skin. It was exactly the type of thing that she'd do, and had done, in the past. Cinder was the best target for it, because the flame-wielding bitch generally thought she was the smartest person in the room anyway. Neo huffed. She didn't like having to resort to signs. They were clunky. Still, as needs must.

Neo fake-bowed, and came up with a sign on a stick. I'm bored, it said, in Comic Sans. Then, she flipped it around. Entertain me.

Merc didn’t want to put in the effort to have a conversation with someone who couldn’t or wouldn’t actually speak to him. He didn’t even know which it was and honestly, he couldn’t give a rat’s ass about it either. He did not care. He didn’t care back at the castle, didn’t care back home, and certainly didn’t care now.

Neo didn’t like Cinder, that much he knew, and it had something to do with that dumb redhead with the cane back at Beacon. Mercury didn’t care to buy into that either. Cinder would have burnt Neo to a crisp with her new maiden powers so it wasn’t like there was anything to worry about on that end either. Even if Cinder had been in Pandora as well.

No, Merc would have preferred it if Neo just left him alone just like he was leaving her alone. But apparently the stupid mute wasn’t having that either because she suddenly decided to communicate with signs. He stared at her for a moment, not quite believing what he was seeing, before letting a heavy sigh go. ”I’m not entertaining you.” His words were a bit of a growl but his eyes went back to the Grimm they were escorting. Not that they were exactly close to the village just yet.

”What are you, twelve? Paying attention on a mission should be basics for you.” Then again, maybe she was just a weird twelve year old. That would explain a great many things. But Merc was purposefully insulting her so she’d stay on track. He really didn’t want to be social with anyone.

Neo rolled her eyes twice, again. It wasn't like there was much to pay attention to. Grimm, forest, more Grimm, tree, leaves, grass, even more Grimm, birds, hey, look, some Grimm! and Mercury. That was it. It was an easy mission, it was just tedious. Honestly, sometimes she wondered if Mercury and Emerald even had a sense of humour. Well, Mercury. Neo didn't know much about Emerald, but she distinctly remembered Roman getting mad because she had stolen his lighter, and that was always fun.

Then again, they were Cinder's minions, and Cinder didn't have a sense of humour.

She was basically a black hole, sucking up anything good in the world.

She pouted at Mercury. Well, he had called her twelve, which, you know, she knew she was short (she'd used to to her advantage many times before), but she wasn't that short. She wore heels. She crossed her arms, even as she continued to move, and huffed. Pulling out another sign from thin air, Neo looked at it for a moment before she raised it again.

    Haven't you heard of multitasking?

    Neo flipped it.

Or are you so well trained that you can't do anything outside of the mission?

Merc could multi-task when he wanted to. He knew how to juggle plenty of different things at once when he was tracking someone or stalking them in order to kill them later. There were plenty of ways that the young man could have entertained Neo but he didn't feel like it. There was no reason to entertain her. There was no friendship between them or anything beyond just generally knowing one another.

He just wanted to get this done and over with. He glanced back in her direction to read her stupid signs and there was another eye roll that Mercury didn't even try to hide. "Sounds like you need a better attention span." He kept moving at a steady walk as they went along. How far away was this town again? Mercury was starting to think it was too far indeed.

Except there was a noise ahead along the column of Grimm. There was a slight grimace on his lips but then Mercury was moving. Running parallel to the column while moving through the tree line, making sure to keep himself under cover the entire time. If something was messing with the Grimm then he didn't want to give away his presence until he was able to get an idea of what they were dealing with.

These Grimm were different compared to the Grimm that Salem had made back home. Animals of this world twisted by her magic. They bled in ways that other Grimm had not and they were... well, Mercury thought they were unnerving in a way the others didn't. What was attacking them? What was ballsy enough to do that? Apparently a large pair of bears. The Grimm had charged through their territory apparently, but that wasn't anything that Mercury had to worry about. The Grimm were already taking care of it. All there was was to hang back and watch, just in case a third one showed up or something.

Neo felt like, if she rolled her eyes much more, she'd never stop. Back when they had fought in the Vytal tournament, Mercury had been fun. Ish. Including the fake leg-breaking. Watching Blondie lose her shit had been just as fun as Neo remembered, and watching the anger drain out of her as she realised what she had just done had been equally as entertaining. Now he just seemed... boring. Maybe Emerald was the fun one in the relationship.

Wait, no, she was too busy begging at Cinder's feet for any scrap of approval that the bitch would hand out to be fun. It would be pathetic if it wasn't so sad, watching Emerald look to Cinder for anything she'd give. AKA, nothing. And listening to Roman rant about the two had been one thing, it was entirely another to have to deal with it in person.

Mercury was a buzzkill. Her attention span was fine, thank you very much. She huffed for a moment, before hearing the noise travelling down the column of Grimm. Before she could react, though, Mercury was gone. With a step, Neo was off too, parasol down as she jumped from tree branch to tree branch to the source of the noise. Maybe it'd be something exciting?

    It was not.

A scuffle. Neo didn't even have to intervene.....but she did anyway, vanishing from her perch and reappearing near one of the bears. A simple strike, blade extended from the parasol, and the animal keeled over, Neo smiling with a quiet, sinister joy. It wasn't like the rush you got in a fight, not really, but she'd take it over the mind-numbing boredom that was this mission. The other bear growled, rushing her, when one of the Grimm intervened, killing the animal. Neo jumped out of the column, into the trees again, and sighed. She wouldn't have minded being able to kill the other one, too. Wiping the blood on a clump of leaves, Neo retraced the parasol blade. Then she pointed, to where sunlight was visible.

The end of the forest. The town. Finally, the end of this mission.

The reality was the fact that Mercury was under pressure where it came to Salem. There had been a buffer before. He had never been under that scrutiny and he hadn't been. And then there was Oz, who was a drain on Mercury's general sanity already. The young man didn't have Emerald or Cinder. He was outside of his comfort zone in so many ways. Fucking up now could mean his life in a manner it hadn't back home. Other people had easily been to blame in those situations and despite the fact that Neo was here, thus a viable option for blame, he liked having more people around him.

He hadn't felt alone in awhile before Pandora. He felt oddly alone in Pandora, in a manner that was... similar to how he had felt when he was with his father. It was complicated in so many ways but there was no getting away from Salem. He had accepted that as a fact of his life and as a result, he had shifted back into an old mentality without even realizing it.

Neo wasn't content to sit and watch. Which was fine in Merc's books. He really didn't care if she interfered and got hurt or interfered and solved the problem. Either way, it wasn't anything that Merc had to dirty his hands with. Things were wrapped up and then the town was in sight. Perfect. Wonderful. Whatever other fucking word could be used in this situation.

Mercury stopped at the edge of the trees even as the Grimm surged forward. Now that they were here, their job was to make sure that no one escaped and that the Grimm finished what they were supposed to do. Finally Mercury turned towards Neo, ready to actually start talking now that they were on scene. "I'll circle north. You go south." Giving orders was more his style, or at least what he thought his style was when he wasn't going with someone else's plan. "Ten points for everyone we stop." There was a flash of a grin on his lips and then Mercury was moving towards his designated side, ready to have some fun.. and maybe lie a little bit if his numbers were actually low.

Oh, so now he talked to her. It made her miss the days in Remnant when they'd piss Roman off every second day. Neo was tempted to ignore him, but, if anything went wrong, she didn't want to be responsible. Or, at least, she didn't want to seen as responsible. She wasn't stupid. Just because she knew she could escape the castle, evade Salem, didn't mean that she was going to push her luck against someone who she still didn't know how powerful they were.

Better that Mercury take the blame if anything did go wrong.

Neo smiled back, something deep and nasty in there. A competition, just between them? She could roll with that. It certainly made this more fun, and if she had to lie a little, cheat a little, to win, then that was what she was going to do. She doubted that there were many stakes in it, because it wasn't like she cared about Salem's approval, only about Salem's not-killing-her. But hey. This was fun, and Neo was always up for something fun.

Looping around the south, Neo glanced aside to see the Grimm start to fall on the town. It started slow, just a trickle. Then the screaming started. It was always fun to see Grimm doing their thing, especially when she personally wasn't in any risk from them. Ah. A straggler, someone running away from the chaos. Dropping down in front of the man, who didn't look much older than herself, Neo waggled a finger back and forth, before stabbing him. Then she sent Mercury a simple text.

    10 to me.

Mercury didn't feel as comfortable in Pandora as he had back home. Mercury wasn't around the people he felt safest around. No Emerald or Cinder, though really it was more the former than the latter. The young man would have never admitted it but he felt like there might have been someone watching his back when Emerald was around. He had never had a team before her and before he had met the two women, Mercury had always been with Marcus. Alone but with his father.

The assassin didn't give himself time to think about that. Instead he started to follow his own instructions, smirk dropping off of his face as soon as he had separated from Neo. It wasn't like Mercury had been pretending exactly, but the gesture hadn't felt entirely natural either. There was something missing and the young man didn't want to give it much thought.

Instead Mercury swung around the north side of the village. He could hear when the Grimm started to attack the villagers. There were screams and cries for help. Mercury couldn't see much from where he was positioned. Not that he would have cared in any manner. The weak died and the strong survived. That was the world that Mercury had been raised in. He refused to have any sympathy for this village that happened to have gained Salem's attention.

He was expecting someone to coming running in his direction soon but apparently Neo was the first to make a kill. Mercury glared down at his scroll before he heard someone coming in his direction. A pair of teenagers, who Mercury took down in seconds with his guns. Twenty. Mercury texted back easily enough while walking away from a pair of bodies.

Neo's phone pinged, and she frowned down at it. It had only been a few minutes, and she was already losing. She did not appreciate it. Of course, Mercury could also be cheating, and probably was, but that didn't mean that she liked the feeling of losing, even if there were no actual stakes. Actually....

Pulling out her scroll, Neo scrolled through it quickly, checking that there was no signs of any kind of backup for the town, no alarm sirens or flashing lights. It wasn't a very advanced village, and it was pretty isolated, but you could never be too cautious. Neo had never failed one of Salem's missions, and she didn't intend to start now. She had seen some of the aftermath when Mercury did, and she did not want that to be her. She was pretty good where she was, with plenty of options available to her if something should go wrong. So, caution was the way to go, even if it wasn't exactly her style.

She switched to the messaging app, and quickly typed a message, sending it off with a smile.

    stakes?

There was no point in a wager without a reward, after all. Neo kept moving, starting to get annoyed when it looked like the Grimm were doing their job a little too well, with no one coming her way.
