    @Jocelyn Morgenstern

A number of things had happened to Robb over the last several months. He was slowly starting to get over the loss of his entire family. Becoming the Commander had taken up as lot of his time and given him something to concentrate on. Something to fill his time with. Learning everything that needed to be done on a day to day basis had taken him a bit of time. The previous Commander, before he had vanished, had been a good one. One that kept the right things in the right places, even if everything wasn't fully written down. Robb had been able to cobble together the pieces though and was reading up on the policies for dire situations in the spare time he had at work.

From there it had been hunting, getting himself into some messy situations, and getting out of said messy situations. Enough to keep a man busy but once everything was settled... well it was more difficult to fill his time. Robb had managed to turn away from the drink for awhile now. Only drinking as he once had. That was a habit that he didn't want to fall back into. It had been a bleak, lonely, confusing period of this life. Robb really didn't want to go back.

One thing had stuck with him though. Painting. He had met a woman in a bar and she had expressed the fact that a hobby would help him. She had been a painter and had said something about the college. Robb had wound up drinking far too much that night so the details were still a little fuzzy, along with the woman's face. But he remembered her being friendly. Remembered that her words had been kind when they didn't have to be, so painting didn't seem like that bad of a hobby here in Pandora. Not something he would have known back home but here? Well, Pandora was always a different story.

So Robb had signed himself up for one of the classes. He has still brought his sword since he had to carry it home afterwards but everything had been placed to the side of the painting... station? Something along those lines and he stood there waiting for the next step in all of this process. Robb had... no clue what he was doing. Just remembering some friendly advise and trying to follow through with it.

It was going to be a quiet evening tonight; Jocelyn could just feel it. She had prepared quite a few paintings in advance of today's class. She took complete pride in her work and took every effort in what she did and what she presented to her class. Today she was teaching them some more of certain basics and how to choose specific colours to suit moods. It was not a surprise really that her palette had taken a turn into darker shades. She had been through a lot and it wasn't getting much easier for her. She supposed one saving grace was that her husband had still not found his way into this place. Well, she could only hope that it stayed that way because she could not bear him being here. What she really wanted was her son back. She had hoped that having Lucian in Pandora might save some of her sanity, whatever was left of it. However, he had left soon after she had found him and she couldn't help but feel they should have had more time. It wasn't like she would wish this place on anyone but she wanted a friendly face here. It struck Jocelyn that she didn't actually have that many friends.

With that lovely thought permeating her thoughts, Jocelyn made her way to her class. There was one person already in her room and Jocelyn could not help but feel completely surprised. She couldn't stop a small smile escaping onto her lips as she looked at Robb in front of her. She could still remember that night, and obviously he had as well. Jocelyn couldn't imagine that it was a coincidence that she had told him about her art classes and now here he was, signing up to one. Well, she was thrilled that her words had some impact on him. He was obviously willing to try and that was all you needed really to start painting an excellent picture.

Jocelyn walked in confidently, setting down her canvas. She turned to face Robb with a smile, "Hey, long time no see." She pointed out, as it had been a long time since she had seen him in that bar. "How have you been?" None of her other students had turned up yet so it was just them for now. At least this time they were both completely sober; Jocelyn wasn't sure how well she would be able to handle one of those types of conversations again, especially in her present mood.

Robb knew that Jocelyn would be here. Or rather, he had a good idea that she might have had a chance at being here. It was one of the reasons why the red head had shown up in the first place. Probably because she had been nice to him at one of the darker moments of his time here in Pandora. Not overly nice, because then things would have been skewed a bit for him. Overly nice never felt genuine. But she had lectured him a touch and that had done more for him than many nights of drinking.

After all, what other reason did he have to drown his sorrows. Plenty of others here in Pandora had gone through the same sorts of things. It had helped him when his other siblings had vanished not long after. If Robb had still been in that downward spiral, he would have gotten into much more trouble. And not become the Commander when the previous one had vanished. So that similar event in another case had done more for his "career" here than anything else, but it was still a lot to grasp if Robb thought on it too much.

So the red head wanted to thank her. At least, something along those lines, and this had been the only connection he remembered from that drunken night. He also hoped that he could find some sort of hobby that was healthier than his previous one, so if Robb didn't run into Jocelyn somehow, then he would be alright for the night as well. He'd have to learn something but that wasn't the worst thing in Pandora, was it?

Except she was walking towards him moments later and Robb couldn't exactly help it if he perked up a little at the sight of her. After all, it wasn't like Robb had many people he was friendly with anymore. A little bit of friendliness was something anyone could hope for, right? "Hello, it has." He smiled at her because he was going to be friendly. He was only grateful towards her, which was a big reason why he was here. "Uh, better. Better than before. I..." Except that was the awkward part, wasn't it? Admitting how bad things had been and thanking her for her words. "I... thanks for that." Awkward probably was a light word, wasn't it?

Jocelyn was thrilled that Robb had taken up her advice to try a different class and especially to try out painting. It was a therapy she highly recommended to most, given that when you were painting you have to allow yourself to be completely consumed by what you're doing, rather than thinking of every small detail. It was a way to detach from reality and from whatever was going on around you. Jocelyn had been painting a lot more in recent months because of that very reason. She didn't have much to celebrate at home, or much to keep her occupied. She had gone from a full household to no one. Everyone had left her now, and she only had Magnus, Alec, Simon and Raphael left in Pandora. All of them were from much further in her future, and she didn't feel she fitted in with them as easily as she might have liked.

As she set down her things, she rounded the desk so she could face Robb, "Oh, it's no trouble. Glad to help." She shrugged her shoulders and pulled a shawl around them. The heating had obviously not come on quite yet in the classroom, but then, Robb was a little early. "I'm glad you're feeling better." She said with a gentle smile, "And of course taking up painting." She brightened up quite a lot at that statement and grinned towards him.

A paint brush still felt rather odd in Robb's hand. His finger tips were not use to holding something so foreign. Pens and quills were fine and standard. The wood of a bow or his sword, also standard. But the way you were supposed to hold a paint brush? That was something entirely new to Robb. He wasn't sure if he was doing it the right way or if perhaps there was something wrong with the way he moved it. His own brush strokes were never as neat as the others.

"It's certainly been an interesting journey." The red head gave a bit of a chuckle as he looked back towards the canvas he was supposed to work on. They were supposed to be painting some sort of scenic thing that could be done in a single night. One of the women in the class seemed to think that this occurrence happened with wine. Really, Robb would have objected to such a thing. But apparently that was not what someone did at a school so the previous teacher had objected to it.

"Unless you have some tips for a novice?" Robb was not kidding himself about his own abilities. This was supposed to be a hobby. Something that was fun. It was hard to have fun at something that you were not entirely good at though. It was almost as if he were a little worried that someone would wonder why he was even in this class to begin with if he had no skill at all. The point was to learn, but he was not what one would call a "natural".

Jocelyn placed her hand on top of Robbs and helped guide his fingers onto the paint brush with a grin, "Try to hold it like this, not like you're about to stab someone with it." She remembered him saying last time about knowing something of combat or being trained for it, so it was an easy mistake to make. For her, painting had come first and training later, so she hadn't gone through the same process. She felt as though painting and combat went hand in hand with the way in which situations were processed and their hands moved. Perhaps she would be able to convince Robb of this too.

"Do you want to get started before the other students turn up? I could give you a little help on the basics?" Just small things like how to prepare the canvas and get the right amount of paint for the brush could be daunting for a beginner.

The entire point of this had been to speak to Jocelyn and to pick up a hobby. Robb was trying. He had a habit of trying hard at whatever it was he put his mind to. To whatever might have been expected of him. Except no one here really expected anything out of the red head. They kind of didn't care where his skill level sort of lay. It was odd for Robb but he had adapted well enough. Just relaxing. This was all supposed to be relaxing.

He was probably holding it more like a knife than anything else though. What else was he supposed to hold it to? The woman leaned over to help him. She wrapped her fingers around his in an attempt to show him how he was supposed to hold it. It wasn't like Robb was touched very often either. It had been more common back home. Hugging his family. His father rustling his hair. Sparring with Jon or having his teacher correct his stance while shooting a bow and arrow.

But in Pandora there was a lack of touch that Robb had been aware of. It always made him feel odd when it suddenly happened. Like he was giving it more attention that he should have, mentally, because he felt like he was sort of... starved for affection, as it was. He didn't know whether to be mad at himself for being silly or upset that it affected him so much.

Robb still paid attention and made sure to move his fingers so they were grasping the brush correctly. It was an odd motion but he was still holding it firmly in his hand when she pulled away and offered to help him before the others arrived. "I'd actually appreciate that. Thank you. Not as natural with painting as I had hoped." He smiled easily and gestured with his free hand at the painting. "Feel free to start with the most basic of basics, obviously."

"Well, to start off with the most basics of basics would be to tell you how to prepare your canvas, but fortunately for you I already did that, so you can start straight away with painting rather than us waiting for the canvas to dry. By that time the other students would probably be here anyway.

If you grab some of the paints which are off to the side just over there and once you've done that, just copy what I'm doing on my blank canvas here.

Now all you really want to do is just put a small piece of paint on the edge of your brush like this, so that it isn't running off the brush or down onto the handle, because all that happens then is you end up with a painty hand, which frankly no one wants.

Then, once you've got the paint on your brush, you need to hold the brush like I showed you earlier and start to brush on your canvas so that only the smallest part of the paint gets left behind on the canvas. We only ever start out painting small, short strokes because that way we can build it up.

Here, if you watch me, I'm painting the grass here on the bottom of my painting, and it starts out all as pale green, and then as I build it up by adding more layers of paint to the canvas, you can see the depth of texture and the different colours I've been trying to use.

    Now you try."

And just like that the situation changed all over again. Because Jocelyn had taken the time to take on that "teacher" voice that Robb knew all about, he listened. Carefully as every thing she was passing on to him was new for him. Determined to make use of this extra advise instead of just letting it pass through. Even though what she was saying was border line a lecture on the entire subject because it really included all the basics that the woman could have thought of!

Furrowing his brow, Robb leaned towards the canvas to make sure he was following what she was saying. Getting the hang of making sure he was holding the brush right more than anything else. He really could do nothing more than try. "I think I understand." Jokingly he spoke the words as if he were making fun of himself a little bit more. Kidding aside he felt as awkward with a paint brush as he did with a mace or a gun in his hands. Like it didn't quite belong there.

Making sure he followed her instructions Robb put a little bit of a paint onto the brush and held it carefully to the canvas. No one could doubt that he was concentrating on anything but the work at hand. Only the smallest part of paint was probably the most difficult part. Probably because Robb felt like he was supposed to smear the stuff against the canvas. Quickly.

Robb relaxed though and followed through with her instructions. Soon enough he was pulling the brush back to make sure that he actually hadn't smeared it across instead of "brushing" it. To build up a layer he was going to have to go back again along the edge. Understandably it was a bit worrying but he had to get it over with, didn't he? Very carefully the red head swiped along the edge to mimic the movement on his own patch of grass. Where hers was understandably clean and neat, his was still a bit sloppy and heavy handed. Xi River it was not but Robb was making due. Yet he didn't know how he felt about his own painting technique. Zooming in on his sloppiness he tried again, keeping the brush as neat as possible.

Jocelyn settled at her own canvas after delivering her instructions to Robb. She knew it was a lot to take in all at once but it was easier than giving him little broken instructions because it wouldn't flow properly and that would affect his painting. Painting had to flow like an extension of your own conscious and Jocelyn was trying to help Robb into that process. She was still building up the paint on her own canvas. She wasn't sure what she was actually painting yet, but no doubt it would be revealed to her in no time.

"You look like the paintbrush is going to leap back and stab you." She observed playfully and gestred to her own wrist, "It should feel like an extension of your hand, like it's always been there." She explained as she washed her paintbrush and changed colour. As she did she stole a look at Robb's current painting and nodded in approval. He looked to have done a good job, even though he had never held a paintbrush before. She had seen much worse. One student had once been so nervous he'd toppled his own canvas board before the paint had got anywhere near it. They'd spent the rest of the lesson cleaning up after him and little else had got done, "Keep trying like that; looks good so far."

He did feel like the paintbrush was still rather awkward in his hands. He was trying to think of it as more of a quill than a sword, which seemed to help a little, but it was still something that did not feel natural to him. Perhaps it would never be natural to him. His skill with his sword had greatly increased since he started using it on a more regular basis on the Watch but it was still different from war. His sword still felt natural to him.

"It feels as awkward as a slug." Not nearly as slimy of course but that was only a minor detail. Robb was smirking as he said it to make it clear that the words were only in jest. That was an aspect of his personality that was just starting to show again. His humor was coming back which meant that Robb's outlook on life wasn't nearly as bleak as it had been. A very good thing, like breathing was for a person.

His own gaze seemed to dart back and forth between his canvas and hers. When he was painting he made sure that his eyes were glued to his canvas. It seemed like an idiotic move to take his eyes away when he was actually painting. You had to watch what you were doing, right?

But in between his own attempts at painting he glanced at hers to see what she was doing. Watching someone more skilled than you and mimicking their movements was a great way to start to learn swordsmanship. It was a fantastic way to learn many things, if that was how you were use to learning. And that was how Robb was, so he started to try and mimic her hand movements to see if that would help him improve at all. "How long have you been painting?" Maybe that would help him figure out how far he might have been from that skill level.

Jocelyn laughed a little at his self reflection. He didn't look natural at all, but he would, she was sure of it. No one ever just picked up a paintbrush and suddenly just was able to paint like some of the masters of their age. "You'll get it." She reassured him softly and went back to her own painting. As the paint left her brush, she could feel the familiar setting of home revealing itself to her. Jocelyn had many paintings of her parent's home unsurprisingly. Sometimes she felt like if she didn't keep going over the image she might forget the place completely.

Of course at the moment, the painting just had some blue on it for the sky and some grass, but she could already see what it was going to materialise into with some work. She blinked as Robb asked his question. She'd been somewhere else completely. "Oh, since I was quite young." She said, washing her paintbrush, "I took it up properly when I went to the Academy back home. It was good to come home to at the end of the day." She explained, sitting back in her seat. Realistically, her painting had improved when she had been in training at the Shadowhunter Academy because she'd spent so much time at it. It had always been good as well as using it to practice delicate movements through painting.

Practice made perfect. That was the thing that had been drilled into his mind while learning the sword. You couldn't get better unless you practiced. You couldn't know how your sword would move in the middle of a fight or when your life depended on it. So while painting was not exactly the same the red head could understand how the thought process was the same. Perhaps one day the brush would feel as comfortable as the handle of his sword did.

Probably not any time soon though.

Of course she had been practicing for her entire life. That only made sense. Robb wasn't entirely certain he could dedicate that much time to this craft. There were more important things to worry about. But Robb could pursue it as a hobby. It could be something for fun, of which he had very little in life. Even if he was bad at it.

"So it helped you relax?" Hopefully it wasn't too intrusive of a question. He was starting to feel a little more comfortable with the situation. A little more comfortable with the conversation as well. After all Robb was asking questions about a modern life, something he didn't have any clue about, just like he had no clue about painting.

The Academy sounded like something a number of others had spoken about. Schools and the like they had gone to back home, so Robb didn't think about how Jocelyn's Academy might have been entirely different from the rest.

Jocelyn watched her own brush strokes, occasionally looking back at Robb to check what he was doing. He seemed to be coping with everything okay and so she left him to it so she could focus on her own work. They were silent for a time until he followed up what she had been saying with his own question. She nodded brightly, "Yes, it's a good way to express emotions too. Emotions you can't always show in the heat of battle." She knew Robb, as someone who had been trained in that way, might understand her.

There had been some nights, after some raids where mundanes and some of her friends had been hurt or worse, where there had been nothing else to do but come home and put her frustration onto a canvas of her own making. Sometimes it had all been too much to face. Of course being a shadowhunter was in their blood and that was always what they were expected to do, but that didn't mean that it was easy. "What did you used to do to relax?" She asked curiously.

A good way to express emotions? Robb did feel emotions in the heat of battle. Considering the nature of the war he had been fighting everything about it had been emotional in one way or another. Every fight was emotional because every battle was about his family. About saving his father, his sisters, about doing the right thing in a world gone mad. In a world where the great men of the previous generation had fallen apart and their children had taken up their battles.

But what else could Robb had done? Listening to stories of the Mad King had easily convinced him that evil and wrong were real things in the world. Joffrey's actions had easily fallen in that category even if Robb didn't have the whole picture. He knew his father. He had trusted the old King. But after King Robert's death everything had gone to shit. And if Robb thought about it too hard he would easily remember the way his siblings had reacted to seeing him. Like a ghost. Haunting them from the past.

Robb was dead back home. While his siblings had continued to live and figure out their lives, Robb had been dead. His rebellion had failed. He hadn't saved anyone. And that was a wealth of emotions Robb didn't want to think about. What did you used to do to relax? Jocelyn's words snapped him out of his dark thoughts. He had been staring at his canvas and seeing nothing.

"I didn't have a lot of time for relaxing. I would typically spend it with one of my brothers, showing him how to use a bow or a sword with the tutors or with my half brother, sparring." It had been about skill building and learning, but actual fun? Only the time spent with his siblings. But the next Lord of Winterfell had not had a lot of time to himself. "It was a different world. Though I did enjoy horseback riding and hunts. Those were relaxing." Not too different from his life now. It just had missing pieces.

Jocelyn supposed it did not surprise her that Robb had not done a lot to relax. They were from two very different worlds. In hers, she had been actively encouraged by her parents to have some kind of release at the end of a long day of training. Being tense and having that emotion and rage in your muscles only succeeded in them cramping up and hindered the way you approached situations. Many shadowhunters had something to do at the end of a long day, be it play the piano, practise boxing or paining. Everyone had their thing.

"How many brothers do you have?" Jocelyn asked curiously. Being an only child, she had often wondered what it might be like to have siblings around who you could confide in or teach things to. She let her gaze flick occasionally between him and her canvas. Hers was gaining a little more character than Robb's, but that was partly because they were talking so much. The picture in front of her was lighter than others had been of her home and surroundings in the past. Perhaps present company was having a positive impact on her mood and emotions.

"Three. My half brother is around my age but two younger brothers. Two younger sisters as well." It was almost as if a part of Robb's voice lifted slightly as he was speaking about his siblings. It was obvious that Robb felt fondly about his own family. They were the only people he had ever trusted. Really, the closest people he had known in his life. Even now in Pandora Robb wasn't close to anyone. Anyone who had gotten close had vanished.

"We were decently close, though we ranged in age. It was always a full house and plenty of noise growing up." But that was a normal House in the North. He knew plenty of others that said they were similar and Robb had no reason to doubt them. But his House was built around their family and their duty. To each other and the people who pledged to the North.

"How about you? Any siblings?" It felt like they were having a bit more of a conversation. He was more relaxed now than he had been before and he was working on his painting now. Concentrating but not as quite hard edged about it either. It would come to him with practice and there was no point in trying to be perfect from the start. Robb would just take Jocelyn's advice in stride and do his best, as he always did.

It was nice listening to Robb tell her about all of his siblings. It sounded to her like it must have been quite a noisy house for him growing up, but one in which something was always happening. Jocelyn smiled and sat back in her seat, momentarily distracted from her painting to listen to his tales. Jocelyn hand't really had many chances like this to just talk to people in a while, at least not anyone who she didn't know from home. Magnus and Raphael were always good listeners, but they had their own lives and didn't need her to be there trying to solve her problems. It wasn't like they'd caused them.

"No siblings, I was an only child." Jocelyn said with a gentle shrug, "I did often wonder what it would be like to have brothers and sisters though." It had just never happened for her parents. She wondered for a moment about telling him about Jonathan. Outside the community they had here of people that knew her from back home, no one knew about her son. Jocelyn hesitated but decided against it. She wasn't sure it was the right time yet. She couldn't even recall the last time she'd spoken her sons name.

"Always loud. Lots of laughter and screaming up until a point. Then running around and there's always something happening somewhere." At least, that was what it was like for Robb. Always something and how could it not with all the people running around. He had a lot of siblings compared to other family houses, but it was a house that was good. A place that basically felt right to Robb. A place that would always feel like home.

And it was supposed to be his home as Lord of Winterfell. After his father had to step down, hopefully due to old age, Robb would take over. He would raise his own family there and he would repeat the process. There was something very comforting in that thought for Robb. Even though he knew it would never happen. His siblings weren't much older than how he last remembered them and they had all thought that he was dead when they saw him.

"Perhaps not the best choice as long as you favor peace and quiet though." There was a chuckle to his words as he dipped one of his brushes in paint and started to try to apply it properly to the canvas. Not quite as awkward as he had been before with the brush, which was a good thing by any count.

The picture he was painting verbally for her was one which she longed for. She had never been particularly maternal, but she had longed for a full family, full of laughter and joy. She had only ever wanted children and a loving family around them. It had only brought her pain so far though. Her husband, Valentine, had poisoned her and twisted their son, Jonathan, into a demon that she couldn't even bear to hold. It kept her up at night, thinking of the child he was growing into back home without her influence, grown up into Valentine's protege, whatever her felt that should be. It made her feel sick, knowing she could do nothing to change it. They were worlds away, and even back home she had been the worst mother possible; she'd cried when Valentine had insisted she hold her son, and her body had been repulsed by Jonathan; every instinct in her had wanted to hand him back.

"Peace and quiet is overrated." She said with a sad sort of smile, still not going forwards or telling him what she was actually thinking of.
