    ---

A gust of wind blew through his hair, as soft as lover's caress. He could hear birds calling and smell the flowers in full bloom, their scent overpowering his olfactories. After a few days in the bustling chaos and unfamiliarity of Ark City, the wilderness and its pristine air were so sweet that Jaime Lannister felt as though he had been touched by the divine. I cannot recall the last time I wanted to be outside, he mused to himself.

Despite his rather pleasant surroundings, Jaime couldn't bring himself to feel entirely at ease. I should've waited for Lorna and Aurora, he chastised himself for being so selfish and short-sighted. Lorna wished to stay in Ark City with her daughter for the next few days, after all it wasn't often that they ventured out beyond the Vales. Although she insisted she was fine with Jaime immediately returning to Cascade Bay, his honor deemed that he should've stayed behind and waited. Just because he was unfamiliar, even scared, by the exotic nature of Ark City didn't give him a valid excuse to turn tail.

Wondering if this would have any negative repercussions on his budding relationship with Lorna, Jaime found it rather difficult riding alone on the road with so much burdening his mind. He had been riding for most of the day and he could feel his horse showing apparent signs of fatigue. Not wanting to exhaust his horse to death, Jaime decided to stop and catch his breath as well. He was a little beyond the half way point. If he rested for a few hours, as he planned to, he'd be back in town by dawn. If memory served him correctly, there was small town on the way that he could stay for the night so he wouldn't have to take his chances with wild animals and bandits out in the wilderness.

He stopped and dismounted at a running stream, guiding his horse to the water as it hungrily lapped at the cool running liquid. Taking a seat on a nearby tree stump, Jaime took this time to inspect his new hand. Carbon fiber was what the smith called it, the material used to forge Jaime's prosthetic. It felt significantly lighter than his old golden hand and nowhere near as obsolete. For the first time since he lost his original hand, Jaime was able to feel some form of sensation as he could curl and flex the prosthetic fingers on his new hand. The smith warned that it would take a couple days for his brain to adjust to the changes, but once that time transpired, it would be as if he had his original flesh and bone hand.

As Jaime was testing out the capabilities and limits of his new sword hand, sudden movement from the foliage unsettled his horse. Rushing over to calm down his tired and frightened steed, Jaime immediately drew Widow’s Wail and frantically scanned the area for any apparent threats. ”Show yourself!” he called out, the hilt of the sword feeling rather comfortable in his grip.

Life in the wilderness was tough, but manageable. Perrin had made sure Chise would know how to take care of herself in this kind of environment and having Ruth with her made things simpler too. Despite travelling together, however, Chise found herself apart from Perrin more often than not. She could tell the man wanted to be left alone often and it was only fair for her to comply.

She was scouting the local area for fruits she could gather, while Ruth focused on hunting. It was a good way to split the tasks, she thought, even though she really just didn't like the idea of hunting and killing animals. Even watching Ruth do it was a little much for her.

Her eyes focused on the treeline, Chise didn't pay attention to Ruth running off after a rabbit. The Black Dog kept running after it until he suddenly heard a man's voice and stopped. Blood red eyes stared at the man from the among the foliage, not seeking to interact, merely keeping an eye on what he was going to do, as well as gauging if he was going to be a threat to Chise.

However, that was cut short when suddenly a girl's scream rang out, a scream that was Chise's without a doubt. Hearing it, Ruth immediately forgot all about the man he was staring down, instead choosing to run back toward his master.
