Perrin strode along the sidewalk, checking his phone for what had to be the sixth time in twice as many minutes. But there were no new texts or missed calls, just as there hadn’t been any a few minutes ago. He shoved the phone back into his pocket and picked up the pace, swiping his hand against sweat trickling down the side of his face. He tried to ignore the tightness in his throat, dismissing it as an overreaction, but he couldn’t banish Mat’s text from his mind.

I don't care if you're on a date, you need to bloody get home now, loads of stuff's happened and we need to talk.

No one used the words we need to talk unless something very, very wrong had happened. What was more, he’d seen Mat at breakfast that very morning before going out to meet up with Faile, and nothing had seemed to be the matter then. No, whatever had happened must have happened within the last hour or so, and he couldn’t keep his hands from nervously balling into fists every so often by his sides.

Had something happened to Egwene? But she had no enemies in Pandora, at least not anymore. Semirhage had vanished months ago, and nothing bad had happened since then. They’d spent a good six months with nothing bad happening to either of them. It would be a lot like Pandora, he thought vehemently as he all but ran down the last stretch of road, to do something to ruin that peace and quiet.

Elayne must be visiting, he realized as he hurried down the driveway, for he could hear the babes squealing inside. As he shoved his key through the lock, he wondered whether something might have happened to Elayne, or Rand, for them all to be here. Had something caused Rand to lose hold of saidin? Oh Light, Perrin didn’t even want to think about it.

“I’m here!” he called, dragging the door shut behind him. He quickly pried his boots off, almost losing his balance when his socks followed, then padded into the living room on bare feet. Egwene and Mat were there, as were the babes. Perrin scented the air, shifting his weight. Their expressions were as grim as their scents.

“Where are Elayne and Rand?” he asked slowly, feeling his insides plummet. He had a feeling he already knew the answer, but he didn’t want to voice it. Light, he didn’t.

    Egwene al'Vere likes this.
