The more time that passed, the less likely they were going to survive this. While Veloce was proving to be a skilled swordsman....woman, she wasn't making any progress either. That monster just refused to die. Hopper started planning out their escape. The woods would narrow the battle field, but no doubt the monster could move easier there than they could. There was a band of clear land between the woods and the fence of the plant. The last option was head inside the fence and pray they could out maneuver it in the maze. It didn't take much thought to choose the second option.

When Veloce volunteered to fight, he didn't hesitate. The decision might save their lives, if at the cost of her own. She seemed able enough to hold her own, but for how long? There wasn't time to think about it deeply. Swinging his gun onto his back, Hopper took off running through the gap. He hoped Evelyn had enough sense to follow him for he was sprinting without thinking. He had made it far down that he couldn't hear the combat going on at least.

He put his hands on his knees and tried to catch his breath. Damn, he wasn't as young as he used to be. At least he'd put enough distance between them. His break didn't last long however. He was on the look out again in case there were others and waited for his comrade to catch up. Hopefully Evelyn had successfully gotten away too.

  2. Evelyn was less willing to leave someone behind at the mercy of this creature. Still, she couldn't save anyone or do anyone any good if she were dead and wasting two lives when this woman had so bravely offered to stay behind and potentially sacrifice her own was not about to be wasted by Evelyn.

Without a word, the Chief took off. Evy hesitated a moment before following him, though leaving plenty of room to split from his path if the creature bore down on them. Chasing two targets was harder than two of them going in the same direction. She kept up fairly well, in decent shape, though her legs would never be as long as his.

When he halted, she had just about run her course, a sprint no longer possible and her lungs burning in effort. She bent over as he did, gasping for her breath and looking in the direction from where they came, hoping to see one being and not another.

"We can't leave her." She huffed between labored breathing, her hazel eyes pleading for the other woman's life.

No words of protest came from either of them, the sheer threat that the creature posed inspiring her companions to pragmatism. Jim crashed through the hole in the fence; Evelyn followed a beat later. The petal-headed monster tried to make itself third in the train, but Veloce stepped into its path, a vicious cross-swipe of her blades pushing it off course. It retreated with a furious howl, showing all its teeth and spraying saliva. Veloce stood her ground, listening as the sounds of crunching foliage behind her fell away into silence.

Though her steel couldn't penetrate its skin, the creature seemed to recognize that of the three humans, Veloce's martial prowess made her the greatest threat to it. It crouched down onto all fours, long limbs tensed like springs. Then it leapt—not at her—but above her, arms and legs spread wide like the ribs of a kite, making to sail over the young woman so that it might resume its chase after Jim and Evelyn.

Veloce allowed herself a small smile. The two were far enough away now to satisfy her need to fight without restriction. Magic would make this problem much easier to solve.

Ropes of black shadow and turquoise light sparked around her swords, a melodious hum building in the air as her power coalesced and solidified around the weapons. Veloce lunged, bringing both swords down, and then up in a skyward cleave. The magic spun off the blades in a hard blur, two crackling discs that slammed into the creature as it landed back on the ground. An explosion rocked the earth; a pained screech and a terrible rattling of metal sounded as it was sent flying into the fence. The chain links folded and bent as it struggled to rise from the blow.

Veloce advanced. She was pleased to note two long, angry gashes on the monster's torso, and fresh spots of red glistening upon the fence. She'd never known a demon spirit to bleed rather than dissipate outright, if that was what this creature even was, but it was good to know that the thing could be injured. If it could be injured, then reason suggested that it could also die.

"You're going nowhere," she said. Again, magic snapped along the length of her swords as Veloce prepared another attack.

"I know but..." But this was their chance. Obviously Veloce had a plan if she was willing to sacrifice herself. He didn't want to waste her sacrifice. However, the image of the man who had died earlier caused guilt to well in him. It wasn't right to leave her behind. Without the two of them, she stood no chance. It went against his better judgement, but finally he conceded. "Fine. But the moment I'm out of bullets, you run."

Hopper let out a deep breath, everything in his better judgement screaming for him to run. But that was what being a cop was all about right? Putting yourself before others. Granted, he wasn't in it for the heroics. There was a reason he was in the sleepy town of Hawkins instead of a major city. But there was a job to be done and this was one of those times. He still had bullets left at least, hopefully enough to put the thing down for good. He would have to be careful.

As he ran back, he feared the worst. A girl that size against a monster like that? The nearer he drew to the site, the more commotion he could hear. Then it sounded like a bomb had gone off. Hopper stumbled to a halt. What the hell was that? Maybe the fight had taken to inside the plant and blown up a machine. Jesus this was escalating. He even saw the flash of lights in the distance, further confusing him. Veloce was in some serious trouble now. Picking back up to a sprint, Hopper made it far enough to see the fence. It appeared the fence had buckled under the monster's weight. Only this time it looked like Veloce had the advantage. Her sword was...shining. Something about it didn't seem right. Instinctively, Hopper moved behind a tree, watching from a distance. Did Veloce just...what was that? Some kind of magic? It didn't seem that far fetched considering where he was, but he still wasn't used to the idea. It didn't much matter to him as long as she could kill it.

Pulling out his gun, Hopper readied it in case he needed to attack. However, the unfamiliarity of the situation caused him to act more cautiously. Veloce had the bigger stick and was in control. Now it was a matter of seeing what she would do with it.

"I'm waiting to see what happens," He explained to Evelyn, who was probably no doubt confused as he was. "I'm not sure what she's doing, but magic isn't something I'm going to tangle up with until I know what's going on."

  5. Evelyn gave him a incredulous look as she finished catching breath, "It looks as if bullet don't cause that thing any harm anyway." She pointed out, straightening, "It sounded like you knew..." BUt he was already off and running and Evy had no choice but to stay here alone or follow. Since it was her own suggestion that they go back, she was in no position to back out now, not without being a complete coward. Evelyn was no coward, but she also wasn't a fool. She could see that they were beaten and they needed a better plan than shooting it.

Evelyn skidded to a halt at the huge booming sound and was still a few feet behind Hopper. She put her hands over her mouth, still stunned by the awful creature that had attacked them and killed the injured man, but also because of the fantastic display of what could only be called magic before her.

The creature was down for a moment, hitting the fence with a meaty thud, but Evelyn's attention was far more focused on the glowing swords. Evy had seen powerful beings before, so this wasn't completely unbelievable, but it was indeed nothing like she had ever seen before.

She nodded at Hopper, still agape at the demonstration of destructive wonder in front of her. Magic had never really done her any good and it mostly meant danger. Imhotep spent a lot of his magic trying to kill she and her family. At least here, she had no family to lose.

"I'm glad she's on our side." Evy commented, coming up beside him, ready to help if she could, even though she knew she probably couldn't.

The monster rose, watching the new threat. Finally, it decided that it couldn't kill her and, in a flash, fled in the direction of Hopper and Evelyn, simply running to get away.

OOC: Let me know if this is alright to do with the creature.

(ooc: I don't mind, though I suppose it's mostly up to Nairne!)

The monster clambered back onto its feet, face-petals rippling to show teeth as it snarled, the motion sending strings of drool down to mix with the blood in the dirt. Its body tensed; for an instant, Veloce was almost certain it would lunge and try to kill her before she could cast any more magic, but instead the beast's powerful legs propelled it over the fallen fence. It wasted no time running into the forest, the mists doing little to muffle the sounds of foliage being swatted aside and trampled upon as it beat a hasty retreat.

Part of Veloce was honored that a creature so horrific and unnatural saw her as a challenge, as a threat. The rest of her was not keen on letting something so murderous escape to wreak who knows what else kind of havoc on the town Jim had mentioned.

The area near Jim and Evelyn shimmered, lines of black static crawling briefly on the air as Veloce teleported into the monster's path, cutting it off. She landed in a ready stance, swords pulled back...

And caught sight of the two watching from nearby. Veloce faltered, surprised and dismayed. They were supposed to be gone! Had they not fled as far as she'd thought? Or—no, she realized, they'd come back. Why exactly they'd bothered to return was a question she'd love to have the answer to, but it didn't matter. They'd seen now, plain as day—the magic that continued to spit sparks around Veloce's blades, damning evidence of her liberal use of sorcery against the laws of the Prohibition.

Well, it was a conversation they could have only after the creature had been dealt with. It swerved, cutting around Veloce in her moment of distraction, and raced towards Jim and Evelyn instead.

Cursing, Veloce spun and stabbed her swords into the ground. The earth crackled; golden spikes of molten light erupted from beneath the monster's feet, trying to spear it through or slow it down.

As Hopper watched, it looked as those the battle was going to go in their favor and maybe Veloce would finally kill the thing! Magic user or not, he didn't care as long as that monster was dead. However, instead of keeping after her, the demogorgon ended up turning and heading straight towards Evelyn and himself. Immediately, Hopper fired at the thing, hitting it, but no where close to stopping it. There wasn't going to be time to run now and, unless Veloce was an Olympic athlete, she wasn't going to be able to run over and stab it before it had at least taken out one of them. They were staring death in the face and it resembled some type of alien monster flower thing. A creature with no face.

Something was happening in the ground, but Hopper wasn't looking. His focus was on the ugly thing trying to kill him. Suddenly he was aware someone was there when they hadn't been and there was Veloce in front of them, looking ferociously at the oncoming threat. What the...had she just teleported? Well, it made him feel a little more at ease. "We finish this now!" Hopper said to her and raising his gun. He fired another shot, this one shooting a little blood out of the wound. Their combined efforts were wearing on this thing and it actually looked like it could be defeated now.

The demogorgon was close now and Hopper only had enough time to load another round before it would be upon them. He was doing so now, just as the creature let out a blood curdling screech. The ground beneath the beast seemed to have been been broken like eggshells. Some kind of holy light burst forth. Hopper couldn't help but flinch at the sight and stepped back.

Steam drifted from the demogorgon's body, it's lumbering form standing in place for a moment. It let out a weaker shriek, stepping precariously side to side. It raised a claw towards Hopper and Evelyn, almost like it was willing itself to try and keep up the attack. Instead it fell forward to the ground, twitching and clawing at the dirt. Hopper wasn't going to let the opportunity slip by. Aiming at the back of the head, Hopper fired the killing shot into the skull. It made a grizzly noise before laying still.

"This thing better be dead," Hopper muttered. He made a movement to approach it to check, but felt it was better to just stay put instead it wasn't. Looking over at Veloce, Hopper gave her a solemn nod. "Nice work there. You saved us."

  8. Evelyn didn't know if she should flee and run the risk of triggering the creature's chase instinct or stay and try and fight it off, both choices clearly pointed to death. She decided she didn't want to go down by being knocked down while running and that this thing would feel her daggers before it killed her. Wielding them with a determined expression, she waited for the inevitable clash, a fight which she was pretty sure she could not win. Did it matter in the end? She was stranded here, alone. Wasn't this why she was here, really? Her life wasn't simply forfeit but she didn't particularly care anymore. Everything she cared about was stripped and she wasn't about to try and replace things. That left her in pretty much perpetual misery, the only cure being to help others until it killed her or something else changed.

It looked like the former was about to take place right now.

She was about to join in her own assistant, even if it was in much closer proximity for her than magic and bullets when light erupted from the woman she knew so little about, who was seemingly at least as, if not more powerful, than Imhotep. She winced and shielded her eyes as light shot up toward the creature.

She turned back once the light was bearable again and gasped at the dying creature in front of them, staring at it with both apprehension and disgust. She backed up one step at it moved toward them one last time and writhed on the ground. Hopper aimed and fired in one motion and the frightening monster finally ceased to move. Catching her breath, Evy tried to control her racing heart.

    "This thing better be dead."

Evelyn looked from him to Veloce, agreeing with Hopper's proclamation that she had saved them with a nod, "What was that?" Evy finally asked. She wanted to ask what Veloce was but held back for a moment between Hopper's answer.

Then, she looked at her, "Impressive, are you a sorcerer?"

OOC: So sorry, didn't realize it was my turn till recently.

One last bark from Jim's weapon, and the monster went still. None of them went over to check that it was actually dead though, Veloce included. As foreign and horrific as the creature was, she had lingering doubts about the nature of its mortality; if those toothy flesh-flaps suddenly opened up again and tried to rip a chunk out of one of them, she wanted to be far enough away to muster a counterattack.

    Thankfully, that didn't happen.

The sudden quiet that settled through the area felt almost eerie after the last few minutes of chaos. Her companions spoke, filling the air with words of polite gratitude. Veloce didn't respond at first; didn't even smile. She'd expected to have a storm of accusations hurtled at her, damning her for holding onto her sorcerous powers despite the Prohibition... But there was nothing. No anger, no fear, no ill-will.

That was a surprise. Were both of them actually sensible people and recognized that magic had been their best chance at victory, no matter what the law declared? Perhaps, but there was something else about this whole situation that still seemed off. Veloce just couldn't put her finger on it.

Even Evelyn's question rang strange. Of course Veloce was a sorcerer! The way she'd asked, you'd think the other woman had never met one before. She must have; the Prohibition had only gone into effect five years ago. Sorcerers used to be common, hence the nickname for demon spirit-derived spellcraft: common magic.

"Obviously," she replied to Evelyn. To Jim, Veloce added, though in a voice bereft of warmth, "You're welcome. And I suppose I should thank you both as well, for not calling me a criminal."

Veloce slid one of her swords back into its sheath as she circled around the heap of fallen monster to rejoin the others. Her other sword she kept firm in her grasp, in case the assumed-corpse jumped up again. It did look very dead, though.

"I've never heard of a creature like this. Did you say you know something about what it is?" she said to Jim.

Finally, Hopper felt safe again. A dead demogorgon was a relieving sight, though it didn't bode well that they were in Pandora at all. Pandora wasn't the Upside Down and he was thankful of that, but that last thing he wanted to see was the monsters that lurked from there. But it did hold some hope that maybe someone from back home would follow him. Not that he wanted any one to suffer his fate, but at least he wouldn't be alone in this crazy place.

Their rescuer didn't seem as pleased about their victory. No doubt this lady had probably seen worse creatures if she was some kind of magic wielder. Still though, one would think that after a near death experience she'd at least crack a smile. "A criminal?" Chief Hopper let out a short laugh. "Lady, if killing demogorgons is a crime, then I'm quitting the force. They're better when they're dead. You had the advantage that saved us anyway."

It felt a little strange that she was asking him about the demogogon like he was some kind of expert. Then he realized that he had the most experience with them than anyone here, thus making him the expert. Lucky him. "I just know it's a monster from the Upside Down, some other dimension. It started killing people in my hometown after some scientists opened some wormhole thing. This is my first time seeing one in Pandora though..."

The creature still hadn't moved and curiosity got to him. Cautiously walking forward, Hopper approached the beast. It was massive and just as intimidating up close as it was afar. He hated these things, but he'd rather make sure it was truly dead. In a long moment, Hopper hesitated then nudged the thing with his boot. Nothing happened and Hopper let out a sigh of relief. "Okay, he's really dead. Thank God."

  11. "You're welcome. And I suppose I should thank you both as well, for not calling me a criminal."

Evy lifted one brow, quite agreeing with the sheriff when he said what she had done was clearly no crime, "Absolutely, you saved our lives. We aren't about to get choosy on exactly how." She smiled at the other woman kindly, "We all seem to come from different places here and, magic might not be common where I'm from, but no one would call you a criminal for it, especially if you used it for good like you have today."

She hoped that her words might make Veloce feel more at ease, she seemed uncomfortable to reveal herself to them, probably to anyone.

When Hopper started talking about other dimensions, Evelyn felt like her head was spinning. She already hated this dimension, she didn't need more, especially if things like this awful creature came from them. She didn't really want to hear about them or this monster but she supposed she ought to gather as much knowledge and facts about the unknown as possible. Though, it felt like an endless and impossible task. All she knew about her world was swept away when she arrived.

"You don't expect any more, do you?" She asked Hopper. That was a place to start anyway, "And, if another arrives, how will you stop it...?" Her hazel eyes flashed toward Veloce who, no doubt, had a home to get to and wasn't about to act as sentinel. Speaking of, Evelyn suddenly felt exhausted and looked forward to resting in her own home, however lonely.

Part of her wanted to pay attention to Jim and Evelyn's discussion about the monster—the 'demogorgon'—because it was extremely important to know if she should expect the foulness of more flowering teeth creatures in her future. They three may have pulled through with nothing worse than a few bruises and pounding hearts, but the same couldn't be said for that unfortunate man up by the humming tower, nor whoever the puddle of red-slick guts back on the road used to be. This beast and its like weren't threats to be taken lightly.

The rest of Veloce was stuck fast to what else the two had said. An upside-down, other dimensions, magic being uncommon. Add to that the foreign weapon Jim used, both of their unfamiliar clothing, and this awful monster she'd never even heard of before... None of it made any sense!

Again the ill feeling that had followed her ever since she was pulled into this dark forest shuddered through all her limbs, a wave of ice moving from her head to her toes. Veloce's gaze darted from the sizzling, bleeding corpse on the ground to her two unlikely companions. She tried to keep her expression impassive, but worry and nervousness flickered in her eyes.

"Wait, wait. When you say no one would call me a criminal for using magic... That's a bad joke, right? Surely your king agreed to follow the law of Prohibition, same as the other nations? All sorcerers are to give up their magic or face exile?"

Actually, to that matter: "... What continent am I even on?"

Hopper nodded along with Evelyn's words of encouragement. Their companion seemed pretty odd alright. Most of the magic users he'd encountered in Pandora seemed pretty comfortable using it in front of whoever. He was grateful she had in the first place or they all would have been dead. That was the important matter at hand. He hoped there weren't going to be any more demogorgon, but at least it made him feel better that there were those out there that could kill them much easier than he could.

"I don't know," he said reluctantly to Evelyn. "It's hard to say since the rules don't apply the same in Pandora. If it were like my world, though, there's probably a portal nearby where they're coming from. I'm fine staying behind the barrier in case there is. Should probably let the local cavalry know they're out there at least."

Hopper glanced at Evelyn. "Uh, we don't have a king right?" He shrugged. "Listen, the only Prohibition I know of banned liquor in the 20s or something. Thank God there's none of that going on here."

"Yeah guess you aren't from around here. This place is called Pandora where people get pulled from different dimensions for who knows what reason. So I doubt we're on any continent you've heard of."

"Evelyn would have to vouch for me, but I'm pretty sure there's no restrictions on magic. I see people use it every once and a while. Still getting used to that..."

  14. Evelyn looked sympathetically at the young sorceress as it became obvious that she had just been dropped here "Oh, dear." she fretted, never having to explain it to anyone before, let alone a stranger. Who new how she would react. Evy had many times rehearsed how she might tell Rick if he ever arrived but she knew him well and would know what to say in order to measure his response.

Thankfully, the chief jumped in and Evy nodded her head, "Wherever you're from, you're not there any longer. This is some sort of other world that takes people from other times and dimensions and we live here until we die or are taken away, where, no one really knows." She gave her an apologetic wince as the explanation must have been very off putting for her.

"I had no magic where I'm from, well, not like yours anyway, but it's definitely not illegal here in Pandora." She took some solice int he fact that maybe this woman would be better off here rather than some place that seemed to oppress her very power, the power that just saved their lives.

"This place is called Misty Hollow, it's a town in Pandora." She explained, trying to get her used to the idea that she was someplace new while keeping her occupied while her mind was blown, "Do you have someplace to go?" She asked, finally, seeing that it was getting dark.

    No.

A real sense of panic was now alight in Veloce's eyes, her gaze darting from Jim to Evelyn and then back again like a zig-zagging rabbit, desperate to figure out an escape from the situation laid out before her.

What madness was this? Other dimensions? And no way out?

The fact that magic really wasn't illegal here after all suddenly seemed an afterthought. The most trivial of footnotes, utterly irrelevant considering the actual problem at hand. Under ordinary circumstances, Veloce would have celebrated a place openly accepting of magic—as things should be—but this was not ordinary at all. This was madness. There was no other word to describe it.

If not for the misgivings already weighing on her mind, Veloce would've called the two of them fools of the highest order and gone on her way. But there was something solemn and sincere in the way they'd told her, and given all else that had happened tonight, Veloce couldn't deny that even she felt the truth. It sank through her from her stomach to her shoes, heavy as a stone dropping to the bottom of a well.

Her eyes fell to the dead creature at their feet. Somehow it had become the least absurd part of this development; maybe staring at it would help to ground her thoughts.

"I... No. I guess I don't." Veloce stiffly returned her second sword to its sheath. "Misty Hollow, you said? Could I... trouble you to show me the way there? And answer some more questions about this 'Pandora'..."

Jeez. What a way to get exposed to Pandora. Hopper rubbed the back of his head. Poor girl. Getting taken from your world was traumatic enough. Having to face a demogorgon besides is just cruel. He didn't have much to offer this girl, but at least she could feel at ease just being herself, whatever that may entail. Hopper wasn't one to get involved with politics, so it was kind of nice to have a little bit of lawlessness in this world. People didn't judge here like they did in his world and for that, he was grateful for.

"Hey," he said, seeing the wild look in the girl's eyes. "It's going to be okay." His words were false of course. He couldn't make such a promise. But in a time like this, those were the only words he had. After all, he thought he would have been a goner a while ago, and yet he was still here. And others in Pandora seemed to have survived a while. So maybe it might be a worthy promise after all. And who knows, maybe Pandora would be a better place than the world she came from. It was hard to tell with all the craziness that happened here.

Hopper gave a nod to Evelyn. He didn't really know her, but surviving death with a stranger had a way of making people closer. "Yeah, I'll show you guys the way back. The path takes us right back to town. You guys can stay the night so you can get back on your feet again."

Hopper strapped up his gun and started to walk. "So....what do you want to know?"
