    YEAR 7, FEBRUARY 8

The descent from the lighthouse to the shoreline had been somewhat harrowing, to say the least. While Sephiroth was well aware of an easier path along the cliff face, it had carried the risk that A2's Tactical Support Unit Pod 042 would continue to follow him, as it seemed inclined to do whenever Sephiroth spent too much time around the lighthouse. While he usually tuned out the pod's babbling, now and then (now, in particular) it managed to get under Sephiroth's skin and became a nuisance.

Plus, it had stated that taking the fast route down the cliff would be 'potentially detrimental to his well-being', and therefore Sephiroth had been obligated to immediately jump off the nearest edge to prove a point, clutching Ugly Cat in his arms and focusing with vehement pleasure on neatly dancing along the various footholds and sliding gracefully down vast tracks of mud and ice.

When he hit the surface of the rocky shoreline with a bit of a harder thud than intended, Sephiroth immediately set off at a sprint, hoping to put as much distance between himself and that annoyance as possible. Let it go back to A2 and whine about losing track of him.

Eventually, after half an hour's heavy run, Sephiroth reached a smoother patch of the shoreline, having left the cliff behind. He could see the outline of Pandora Town in the distance, illuminated by the brilliant winter sunlight, and with a satisfied sigh, he set Ugly Cat down in the sand. The feline wouldn't stray far, Sephiroth had learned. He preferred to keep within fifteen feet or so, and became distressed if they were separated. It was very endearing.

Taking advantage of low tide, the SOLDIER carefully walked along the shoreline, eyes downcast as he looked for interesting detritus from the ocean, pausing now and then to scoop up a shell or a piece of worn glass. At his side, Ugly Cat prowled like a very small, very unsightly tiger, bottle-brush tail flicking back and forth with predatory intent until, without warning, the cat launched himself forward at a dead sprint, chasing a small crab along the edge of the water.

Giving chase immediately, Sephiroth's initial thought was to protect the crab, which he felt did not deserve to meet its end in Ugly Cat's stomach, knowing as well as he did that it would be an unnecessary death. However, upon reaching the pair, he realized with a bizarre combination of amusement and horror that the crab had latched onto Ugly Cat's front paw and was, apparently, fighting a very good fight indeed.

With the cat screaming hysterically and the crab holding on for dear life, Sephiroth felt monumentally out of his element as he picked Ugly Cat up, ignoring his frantic clawing while he tried to pry the angry crustacean off as gingerly as possible.

Eventually, he had no choice but to yank the crab off, taking a fair chunk of ginger fur with it while Ugly Cat continued screaming bloody murder from the safety of Sephiroth's shoulder. After a few seconds, the screeching had dissolved into occasional hissing and spitting, with a few decent swipes when the SOLDIER attempted to get a closer look at the crab, who still seemed eager to fight.

Sighing softly, he walked to the water's edge and gently scooted the valiant creature into the oncoming waves, waiting until it had disappeared to turn his attention onto Ugly Cat. "That was unnecessarily dramatic. You should be embarrassed." He scolded, scoffing when the feline adamantly refused to move from his spot on Sephiroth's shoulder, still eyeing the waterline uncertainly.

  2. Viktor was just getting used to all these portals and things, travelling around Pandora with his dog, Makkachin by his side, it was... not exactly something normal from where he was from to use a portal to get himself from point A to point B, but it was efficient and saved a lot on money. Something he was a little bit short on as he had arrived not too long ago and was still in need of a job - he didn't know if actually becoming a possible priest for the Goddess Aphrodite was a possibility, a genuine one, or something he had dreamed on a cold night in Morhall.

But here he was, on the beach no less and feeling rather over dressed for the occasion. There were still no signs of Yuuri either, but it was okay, Viktor was the optimistic kind of guy and often allowed himself to be distracted from current problems. But such peace, the sand between his toes and the foreign feeling of that had all been disrupted by a very angry sounding animal.
"No Makkachin. Wait by my side." The man informed his companion who was eager to investigate, spotting where the commotion was going on just along the way on the same shoreline.

There seemed to be some kind of squabble between what looked like a cat and a crustacean? Coming over, easing his way into the presence of the stranger for he didn't want to alarm them or startle them as he had learned so many people could lend themselves to in such a strange world.
"Hello there!" He started cheerfully, accent thick with his origins from his homeland - Russia.
"Are you and your friend alright? Do you need anything?" Viktor had a few supplies Mustang had given him in Morhall before he had left, medical ones that he was more than happy to offer up if an animal was in need of them.

As he waited for a response, his dog, Makkachin sat in the sand by his feet, tail wagging happily though they sniffed the air curiously at the being Sephiroth held.

    YEAR 7, FEBRUARY 8

Sephiroth sighed as he tried to coax Ugly Cat off his shoulders, but by now the feline seemed determined to stay where he was, and kept neatly evading his hands by walking from one pauldron to the other. When he noticed that Ugly Cat was beginning to wheeze, Sephiroth stopped chasing him, unwilling to push his companion into a state of poor health.

He turned his head sharply as soon as he sensed the approach of another person, and Sephiroth frowned slightly at the stranger, noting immediately that they had the same odd hair color. It was the first time he'd seen someone else with silver hair... at least, someone under sixty.

Tilting his head, the SOLDIER barely caught Ugly Cat when the foolish animal tried to jump onto the sand, clearly intent on investigating the fluffy dog who had accompanied the stranger. Holding the cat against his chest, ignoring his soft mewls of protest, Sephiroth stared at the other man in silence for several long, drawn-out seconds as he debated his response.

"No. He was merely startled. I don't believe he anticipated the crab's response." He finally explained crisply, looking down at Ugly Cat's head, aware that the feline was probably starting to foam at the mouth again, due to his deep interest in the dog and his subsequent purring. Absently, Sephiroth pulled a small handkerchief out of his pocket and dabbed up some of the wetness around the cat's mouth. "He's not contagious. He's..." He shrugged. It felt wrong to insult Ugly Cat right in front of him. "He is very unique." He said diplomatically.

Sephiroth's eyes flicked down to the dog again, slit pupils resembling the cat in his arms'. "...Thank you for your offer of assistance." He finally said, still studying the strange, curly-haired canine. It looked soft.

  4. Did he offend the man somehow?

Viktor couldn't help but be reminded of a certain Plisetsky with how this man came across as almost... frigid? Uptight? Guarded? All of the above, especially when he was left looking into those cat-like orbs of his. Uncanny how he and the cat looked so similar, just thankfully not the mouth frothing part too. At least he had said thank you, that's something Viktor couldn't fault him for at least and hey, he figured people always had good reasons to be guarded of themselves. Well. Almost always.

"No problem at all. I'm glad he isn't harmed." Motioning to the cat that was having its mouth wiped, Viktor could only smile again before he motioned to the dog at his side that the stranger seemed to have been staring at for a while.
"This is Makkachin and I am Viktor. May I ask who we are in the company of?" He didn't want to push for anything the man didn't want to give him at least willingly, but he thought it was perhaps worth a bit more of his patience to see if anything good could possibly come out of the strange encounter.

Settling his eyes on the man's little friend, he smiled at the cat, thinking it looked a little on the... weird side but it had its own cute qualities at that. He knew Yuri would have loved to see the cat, though for Viktor he was still more of a dog person himself, hence his companion still wagging his tail and looking up at the bundle of nerves in Sephiroth's hands.
"Crabs can be- Makkachin no." The elder commanded, the dog whining when it stopped dead in its tracks, having been edging towards the waters towards another crab that had quickly scuttled off.

"As I was saying." Viktor began, letting out an elated laugh, hoping to lighten the stranger's mood with it.
"Crustaceans can be such a nuisance, right?" There weren't many run-ins he'd had before, considering he came from cold, cold Russia. But his poodle had definitely gotten into enough trouble on his own, especially with a bag of steamed buns that had Viktor shaking his head at the memory.

Sephiroth didn't understand why this man was talking to him, and while he held his gaze evenly, as he had been trained to do, internally the SOLDIER was confused. He was not distressed, necessarily, but he was holding the cat a bit tighter than was strictly necessary. Looking down eventually, he remained silent for another few seconds, aware that the pause was probably longer than what was considered comfortable. "Sephiroth." He answered at last, still patiently cleaning the cat's face. "This is... Ugly Cat." He said tersely.

It was probably a bad name, but he hadn't intended on keeping Ugly Cat at all. By the time he realized that the cat's presence was at least semi-permanent, Sephiroth had become accustomed to the name, and had not seen a reason to change it. After all, he didn't have to introduce him to many people... usually.

He looked at the dog again, mulling over the interesting name. Sephiroth wanted to ask about it further, but was aware that too much time had passed since Viktor's introduction for him to pose such questions. It would sound... weird, if he asked now. Or so Sephiroth suspected.

The SOLDIER stared at Viktor intensely when he laughed, tilting his head quizzically, as the humor of the situation had been lost to him. It wasn't unusual. Sephiroth rarely caught jokes unless they were logic-based, and even then, they usually annoyed him. Nonsense, a voice in his head would always snap. Don't listen to such things, boy. It's utter nonsense.

"Crustaceans are extremely important to the ocean ecosystem. They are responsible for consuming vast amounts of biological waste and debris, and their role cannot be overstated." Sephiroth corrected primly, tucking the handkerchief back into his pocket and shifting Ugly Cat onto his shoulder, where the beastly feline hovered, still eyeing the dog with curiosity.

Folding his arms across his chest, Sephiroth continued to frown, turning his attention out towards the sea, watching the waves with uncomplicated interest. "I find it very interesting." He admitted abruptly, turning back to Viktor, gingerly pushing several locks of hair out of his eyes when the wind chose to pick his hair up and move it around. "Ocean biology. It serves no direct purpose in my life, but... still..." It was something he had never been allowed to be interested in, and now he was.

  6. "Ah, what an unusual name. Yours, definitely not Ugly Cat. I have for sure heard of other cats by that same name." It was another attempt at a joke and he wasn't sure how well it would go down and be received, but he supposed he should try at least.

    Well that was unexpected.

Viktor really hadn't expected such a straight forward and prim answer, but what should he have thought in the end? For goodness sake, the man in front of him looked like some kind of prince from a long line of royalty, not that he was, but if he actually was then, well, Viktor wouldn't be surprised. Rubbing at the back of his own oddly coloured hair, he let out a small half sigh, half chuckle, his face the picture of someone who was trying his hardest but a little confused by it all the same.

The nice thing was, was that Sephiroth didn't seem genuinely intending on putting the joke down or giving such a stiff response. Maybe this was a natural thing for him, or how he was used to being. Must have been the life of a party, Viktor thought to himself.
"Yes you're quite right. I don't know much about Pandora's oceans but I do know that back on the Earth I came from, we had barely explored any of the large bodies of water. Its a little more on the mysterious side." He was sure the younger was going to have some kind of deadpan response again, but that was okay.

If it got him talking more than one word sentences, Viktor took that as a victory.

Turning back to the cat on the man's shoulder, he offered both of them another smile before motioning to the feline.
"Is he fine with other animals? Makkachin doesn't bite, he prefers cuddles and affectionate nuzzles really. If Ugly Cat is fine, then perhaps would he like to come down and say hello to Makkachin?" Only now was Viktor realising that the name for his own poodle might have been or seemed a little weird for others around here, considering this wasn't the world he was used to which meant colloquial jokes really didn't suit any more. Ah well, he couldn't say he didn't at least give it a thought for now.

And besides, even if Sepharoth didn't wish to make a friend for now, perhaps his cat had other ideas.

It seemed... unkind for many felines to be named Ugly Cat, but Sephiroth bit his tongue before he said as much. Instead, he nodded somberly, giving no indication as to whether or not he had picked up on the joke.

When the conversation turned to the ocean, however, Sephiroth noticeably perked up... at least, as much as Sephiroth ever perked up. There was a new light in his eyes, and he was much more eager to meet Viktor's gaze and hold it. His lips even curled, for a split-second, into a tiny, fleeting smile. "Earth... that must be your planet?" He inquired. "From what I've seen of local tidal pools and shallows, it appears that Pandora has a combination of different marine species, probably pulled from a variety of worlds. Not unlike the land animals, I suppose." Sephiroth had seen creatures he was extremely familiar with, as well as many that he had never even heard of before arriving in Pandora.

Now feeling slightly more at ease, as they were discussing something Sephiroth was at least familiar with, he returned Viktor's smile with a tiny upturn of his own lips. Looking down at the curly-dog, he hummed thoughtfully. "He appears to enjoy most animals. He has several feline friends in Pandora Town." Sephiroth mused, crouching to give Ugly Cat the option to either jump down or else hide behind his neck.

Taking initiative and clearly possessing no fear, the grizzled cat leaped off his pauldron with a gurgled meow and boldly approached the dog, tail held straight up in the air and flat nose twitching eagerly. Glancing up at Viktor, Sephiroth hesitated for a few seconds before speaking again. "Makkachin is an unusual name - to me, anyway." He stated bluntly.

  8. Oh goodness, was that a smile? This man was a lot like the young Yuri he knew, just, an older more edgier looking kind of person. Viktor definitely couldn't imagine him with a pair of fluffy cat ears on his head at least. But it seemed the topic of the ocean or rather, the things within it could spark up a conversation a bit less awkwardly and with some more enthusiasm. Not to mention that smile he had seen too!
"Ah yes. Are you not from Earth then?" It wouldn't be too surprising if Sephiroth had told him he was from another planet or world. To be fair, the skated had actually met a goddess whilst he'd been in Pandora and that had barely been two weeks.

Watching the younger for a little longer and the way his features seemed to twitch here and there at whispers of smiles on his face, Viktor figured he would try prompting a little more out of him. If anything he got to make someone happy by the end of it.
"Do you have any favourites yourself? The creatures, I mean. In the country I am from, the water is usually frozen over so we don't go round beaches often. Not like this." He gestured to the sand between his toes before meeting Sephiroth's gaze once more.

"Oh yes, it is an unusual name. Sadly I cannot claim for his name to have some mighty origin or amusing background. I just came up with the name and it stuck. He seems to like it, or at least not mind so I didn't see any point in thinking of something any better." Viktor chuckled to himself before he crouched down as well, folding his arms over the tops of his knees as he watched the two animals interacting. Makkachin was dipped his head down to meet the cat before laying on his belly against the sand, as a poodle he was a fairly large animal, big enough for his owner to use as a cuddle buddy whenever he was asleep at least. It seemed his dog figured it was polite to make itself smaller for the curious cat to feel even more comfortably, though Viktor didn't think Ugly Cat needed any help in that department.
