    @Daryl Dixon & @Magnus Bane

You both were in your bed when you went to sleep, but when you woke, you are surrounded by a magical maze. You find it’s impossible to use any of your natural or supernatural abilities to get out and discover that the only way out is to solve it.

Magnus drifted out of his sleep slowly, becoming aware of a number of things just as gradually as his senses sharpened awake along with his body. The first was that it was cold. The kind of cold that happened when the person you were sleeping with took all the covers and you woke up entirely exposed to the night air around you -- except he wasn't in a bed. That was the next thing he realized. This jolted him awake much faster, and as his eyes snapped open to entirely unfamiliar surroundings he became immediately aware of another fact: he was entirely naked.

This made sense, since he fell asleep without any clothes on after a rather pleasant night of--well, that wasn't important now. What was important was that he woke up somewhere other than the bed he fell asleep in... and he had no idea where that was. The last time he was taken to an unfamiliar place it was when he found himself sucked into Pandora, and instantly the panic set in that he'd been pulled somewhere else -- pulled away from Alec for the second time. It wasn't a possibility he wanted to think about, but it was an option he had to consider.

"Hello?" He called out tentatively, not sure he'd want to give away the fact that he was here to anyone, or anything, which may be lurking nearby... but also unsure what else to do at the moment.

Daryl didn’t do much sleeping these days. It was easier to just cat nap during the night, falling asleep sitting up – usually it was down on the porch, a bottle of beer at his elbow, but tonight he’d gone up to bed. He’d fallen asleep sitting up, chin resting against his chest. Maybe it was how lightly he slept these days, or maybe it was just that extra awareness from comin’ from a world where not payin’ attention meant you’d be wakin’ up to walkers gnawin’ on you, but as soon as he registered the difference in where he’d been and where he was, his eyes snapped open, already to his feet.

He reached for a knife – cursing the fact that he hadn’t gone to bed with one, and tried to figure out what was going on. The last time he’d ended up someplace different it’d been in that weirdass vision, when he’d been forced t’watch Negan take out Glenn, ‘n Abraham, when he’d gotten captured by those Saviors. But this seemed to be Pandora, as far as he knew.

The sound of a voice from around a corner of a – fuckin’ Christ was he in a goddamn maze – drew his attention and he stalked forward slowly, cursing again the fact that he lacked any weapons. He edged around the corner, only to stop short. “The fuck,” he growled, because there was some naked ass man in front of him and he sure as hell hadn’t been there when Daryl went to bed. It was cold as shit out – or at least cold enough that ain’t nobody should be out without clothes on (Daryl’d gone to bed in a t-shirt beneath a button up flannel that he’d managed not to tear the sleeves outta and some jeans. Hell, he’d even kept his boots on).

"Murphy?" The name was immediate, but almost as soon as it left his lips he noticed a number of differences that all pointed to the fact that this guy definitely wasn't the person he thought he was at first glance. "No, you're not. You look a lot like a guy I met here once." He said, explaining the sudden outburst.

Magnus followed the man's gaze and reaction which emphasized that yes, he was in fact standing naked in the middle of wherever-this-was. "Yeah, sorry about that." He said, not actually sounded entirely sorry because it wasn't as if it was anything he had control over. That frustrated him even more than the actual being naked bit - the fact that whatever happened to him was done to him in his sleep, and that meant he had no idea what happened to Alec. If anything. He tried to calm the immediate fears by reminding himself that he still had no idea what was going on, and for all he knew Alec was still asleep in bed, perfectly fine.

"I didn't exactly have time to get dressed since I just woke up here. Where are we?" He hoped that the man --who he had to to several double-takes of as he spoke because he sure as hell looked a lot like a guy he knew here -- knew more than he did about what was going on here.

He woulda opened his mouth to tell ‘im that he wasn’t no Murphy, but the guy seemed t’realize that soon enough and corrected himself. Daryl grunted – he didn’t really care, he was more concerned with the fact that he’d ended up in some damn maze without noticin’. He didn’t like shit he couldn’t control, he liked it even less when there was some naked guy he didn’t know right in front of him. He came a little closer, if only to hear him better and because he was pretty sure the man wasn’t no danger (less he was hidin’ some weapon and Daryl sure as shit didn’t wanna know where).

Daryl hardly looked impressed by the apology, his gaze not strayin’ away from the man’s face. But he was far enough away stil that it was hard not to see anythin’ else and he huffed an annoyed sigh as he started unbuttonin’ his shirt, only pausing when the guy asked where they were. “Fuck if I know,” he replied, unhelpfully, continuing until he could slip his shirt off and toss it in a rolled-up bundle toward the other guy, a little harder than was perhaps polite.

“There, put it on,” he said. It was the nice thing t’do, but more than that, Daryl wasn’t spendin’ his night starin’ at some stranger’s junk when they were stranded out in the middle of nowhere with no idea how they’d gotten there or if it was cos someone had put them there. If this was another bunker situation he was gonna flip his damn shit. “Woke up ‘n I was here, same as you,” he added, after a moment.

Magnus watched with a mixture of concern and curiosity as the man began to unbutton his own shirt, not entirely sure where he was going with the sudden undressing. A much dirtier part of Magnus's brain began to wonder about the other guy's intentions before he balled up the shirt and threw it at him to put on, and Magnus looked down at the clothing with momentary hesitation. Part of Magnus would rather be naked than wear this particular article of clothing (which looked as if it had been worn for a solid week straight), but that part of him gave in to the bigger part of him which was cold and, honestly, starting to feel a little exposed the longer this encounter went on.

"Thanks," he said, shrugging the button-down over his shoulders, the sleeves going past his hands so that he had to roll them up a bit. Even without pants it was a marked improvement, both against the chill of the air as well as aiding to cover up parts of him it was obvious the other man wasn't keen on looking at. Magnus still wasn't entirely sure it was worth donning a flannel shirt, but he'd survive.

"...wait, are you saying that's what you fell asleep wearing?" He gave him another up-and-down look, taking in the fact that he was entirely dressed. Well, minus the flannel now. The man was even wearing boots! Magnus was clearly focusing on the important things here.

Daryl ignored the look the other guy was sendin’ him. There was enough to deal with right now and he’d like to be able to focus on the maze around them and not...all that. At least he never really got attached to any of his clothes – sure, he’d worn the same pair of jeans through a great deal of the apocalypse, but if he’da ruined ‘em he wouldn’t have cried over them or nothin’. And at least he hadn’t managed to tear the sleeves off the flannel yet.

He grunted in response to the thanks, seeming to relax just a bit when the man started buttoning it up. He eyed the maze, wondering what the fucking point was puttin’ the both of ‘em in it. He could make his way around the woods just fine – even Pandora’s shitty changin’ woods, but mazes, shit, mazes might just be beyond him.

“Somethin’ wrong with that?” he asked, narrowin’ his eyes over at him. “Better ‘n showin’ up here buckass naked,” he added. He was pretty sure there’d never been a point in his life where he’d ever gone to bed naked, and certainly never after the world went to shit. Didn’t want to have to go hoofin’ it through the woods with everythin’ hanging out if walkers got the jump on ‘em (and hell, in those early days when they’d been wanderin’ the woods after the farm fell, sleepin’ had been mostly in piles because it was damn cold).

"Touché." Magnus said with a slight incline of his head as he conceded the point. He still thought it was significantly weirder to fall asleep entirely clothed in jeans and boots than it was to fall asleep naked, but at least at the moment it was serving him a lot better than Magnus's decision was.

The shirt was on and he was much warmer for it, but more importantly he was able to focus less about the condition he was in and more about the condition of their surroundings. He walked in the direction the other man came from, looking around the corner to see another long pathway that diverged a little ways down. "...is this a maze?" The structure seemed very telling, but it didn't make any sense. Why would anyone take them in their sleep and throw them into the middle of a maze?

He put his hands out in front of him, intending to use his magic to find a pathway out of here, but when he tried nothing happened. Not even the start and sputter out of a miscast, just... nothing. There was an immediate pit in the center of his stomach, mind jumping back to the time at the start of September that demon's poison took away his magic for nearly two weeks, and the fear that it would never return. It had, though - at least, it had, up until this moment.

"Why isn't this working?" He said, voice low and frustrated as he tried a second and third time, different spells each time, each to no avail. "I can't use my magic." He looked around for a sign of why, maybe a ward or a sigil somewhere that might indicate something magical about the maze they were in, but there was nothing he could see.

"Dammit." Wrapped up in the implications of his magic being gone (or at least ineffective, dampened somehow within these walls) he almost entirely forgot about the other man as he began to pace, hands trailing against the walls, trying to get a read on something. Anything.

“Looks like,” Daryl grunted, eyeing the surroundings. He’d never done no mazes for fun or nothin’ and he wasn’t exactly looking to start now. Cept, it didn’t seem like he had a choice. He’d been in Pandora long enough that questioning all the weird stuff that happened was kind of pointless – it didn’t really matter why it happened anywhere. It did and now they were stuck with it and now they had to figure out how to get outta here. Daryl sure as hell didn’t plan on starvin’ to death or somethin’ stuck with some half naked guy.

He was distracted from inspecting the maze around them by the other guy doin’ something weird with his hands. Daryl squinted, wondering if the guy was off his nut or actually trying to accomplish something and he was about to bark out a question about what the hell he was doing when the guy said something about magic. Magic? The guy was a wizard?

Daryl reminded himself he was in Pandora and he’d met far stranger things than a wizard. It didn’t matter that he’d never believed magic existed, Pandora didn’t really give a shit about all that stuff. Plus, apparently the guy’s magic wasn’t even working so it wasn’t like it could get them out of there. Daryl huffed, glancing up to see if he could get a read on the stars – Pandora’s sky didn’t look like Earth’s, but he’d gotten pretty good at reading it the past few years. But there wasn’t a single star in the whole damn sky, despite it not being pitch black.

    Fuck.

“We’re just gonna have t’walk,” he grumbled.

Magnus turned quickly to face the the man as he spoke as if suddenly remembering he was there. "Right. I guess so." It really was the only option, wasn't it? He couldn't use his magic, and it didn't seem as if there was anything special this guy was going to try to do to get them out of here, so attempting to find an exit the old fashioned way did seem to be the only thing left to do.

"I"m Magnus, by the way," he said. "I guess if we're going to be stuck in here we might as well know each other's names so I can stop calling you 'flannel shirt guy' in my head." Magnus was already starting to walk a bit along the path, hesitating only when there was a 'T' intersection, glancing left and then right down what appeared to be identical pathways.

"Are you any good at mazes?" He asked hopefully. It all came down to remembering where you'd been and trying to keep a mental map. Or maybe there was a pattern to it. He didn't want to dwell on the idea that cropped into the back of his mind that maybe there was no exit - that this was some sort of unwinnable trap - because that wouldn't be helpful to them just then to immediately panic about. Daryl wasn’t really lookin’ forward to it neither – he got precious little sleep as it was and this had interrupted the first two hour stretch he’d gotten in weeks. And – yeah, he didn’t want to die in some shitty maze because they couldn’t find their way out.

He didn’t really care if he knew the other guy’s name or not, but if it made him feel better, Daryl gave a soft snort, watching as the g – as Magnus started walking down the path. “Daryl,” he said, after a moment, boots clomping over the ground as he followed after him. There didn’t seem to be one reason to go with one way over the other – either way was just as likely t’get them outta here or just further stuck and Daryl chewed his lower lip, eyeing the paths for any sign of a difference.

There didn’t seem to be any.

“Ain’t never been in one before,” he said. That was the kind of stuff kids did for fun round Halloween – Daryl’d never had none of that. Closest he’d ever come was gettin’ lost in the damn woods for over a week. “Know we should at least mark our trail,” he said, reaching out to snap a twig. Only, when he looked back a second later, it was whole again. “Fuck,” he said, succinctly.

"I prefer sudoku, myself." Magnus commented when it looked as if Daryl wasn't a big expert on mazes either. That was unfortunate. He did seem to have some practical skills though, thinking to mark their path as they went with twigs.... until the twigs that were there mended themselves upon being broken.

"So no magic, and now self-mending surroundings. Whoever stuck us here wasn't messing around." And that was the thing, wasn't it? This wasn't thrown together overnight. Someone had to be planning this for quite some time now to think of all the little things, from natural to supernatural ways they might use to escape.

He looked around for something else, anything else, that they might be able to use. All he had on him wasn't even his, it was Daryl's shirt. "You could just start leaving behind pieces of clothing," he suggested with a small huff of a laugh, meaning the suggestion as a joke to keep any awkward, frustrating silences from building up... even though it might actually be their best option. But even then, more than a handful of turns and that was the end of that strategy, and then what?

Daryl shot Magnus a blank sorta look – he’d never done no sodoku before the turn and he sure as hell hadn’t had no time to do it after – but the guy looked like the type. Whatever that actually looked like.

He grunted, eyeing the twigs critically. Not even the slightest hint of where he’d broken them. He fought the urge to snap off the branch completely in frustration, because it was pointless and would just pop back up more ‘n likely. He didn’t want to know why the maze was so hellbent on keepin’ ‘em from leaving, but it didn’t really matter.

Daryl snorted, looking less than amused with the suggestion. “Probably jus’ disappear or somethin’,” he said, because Pandora was a bitch and it seemed hellbent on givin’ ‘em any help whatsoever to get outta this stupid maze. “And I ain’t wastin’ my good boots on it,” he said. Well. His only pair of boots, but they were a damn good pair, even if they were getting a little thin at the toes.

He eyed the two paths again, deciding that he was just gonna take the one on the left. If Magnus followed he followed.

It didn't look like Daryl was going to go for the 'leaving a trail of clothing' option, not that he expected him to. So what did that leave them? Daryl seemed to reach the same conclusion that Magnus had in his mind - they just had to go for it and hope for the best. If they were lucky they'd spot a pattern, or make the right instinctive decisions, and get out of this place. And if they weren't lucky... well, considering they were trapped here in the first place he was pretty certain that luck wasn't on either of their sides just then but he didn't particularly want to consider the ways in which this could go wrong. Not until he had to.

Daryl turned and went to the left, leaving Magnus hesitating at the crossway for just a few brief moments. Should they split up with the hope that one of them would find a way out and get help for the other? Or stick together so at least if anything happened they weren't alone out there? Daryl was only a few steps ahead when Magnus turned left as well.

"Left it is," Magnus said, following behind him. Every so often he'd give his magic another shot, as if perhaps it would work in some places and not others, though each time he tried he few less optimistic for the next attempt. "Since you only seemed about as mildly surprised as I was to end up here, is it safe to assume you're in Pandora as well?" The thought occurred to him that maybe this maze was something else - some place else - and maybe this was a way out.

Daryl glanced over his shoulder for half a second, more reflex than anything else, and kept walking. Least he had plenty of practice doin’ that – he couldn’t even begin to count how many miles the group had covered throughout Georgia – spendin’ the night in some shitty maze wasn’t the worst thing that had ever happened to him. Course, that could change if it turned out there was no damn way for them to get out, but. For now. It was just annoyin’ as hell.

He grunted, giving a nod. Pandora had a habit of doin’ this sort of shit to him – sendin’ him that vision of that truck that Jesus had stolen, that whole thing with sendin’ him to some future time line where he watched Glenn get his head bashed in – honestly, this was tame compared to what Pandora usually threw at him.

He reached out to snap some of the branches, more a move of annoyance than any real hope that they were going to stay broken and give them a trail.

Okay, well, that was a start. Daryl was from Pandora too, which meant that this maze was also probably located within the confines of those annoying barrier walls, since nothing ever got out of those. At least that vague idea that he was still there, somewhere, was a small comfort. The devil you know was better than one you didn't, and now that he was just finally getting used to Pandora and the things in this world he didn't particularly want to get pulled out and thrown into another, unless it was to be taken back home.

The short grunt was the only response Daryl gave, not bothering to elaborate or say much of anything as he continued to walk down the left path, still grabbing at pieces of branches here and there the same way Magnus kept checking his magic - just in case.

"What about before Pandora? Where are you from?" Talking kept his mind working, and kept him in the moment instead of allowing his thoughts to wander every which way. Plus, maybe he'd learn something about Daryl they could use here. Maybe there was some reason the two of them, specifically, were brought here... though just by looking at him he couldn't imagine what that could be.

The branches kept springing back to life as if nothing had happened and Daryl felt his frustration grow with each one. It was all too apparent that neither he nor Magnus had any control in this situation – they’d been hauled from their beds without notice, tossed in this damn maze, and now nothing they did had any goddamn effect on the maze or their ability to get out of here.

A muscle in his jaw tightened at the question – he’d never been one for small talk and he wasn’t especially good with strangers. Doubly so for ones who’d shown up naked and were now wearing his one good flannel. But ignoring him was probably only gonna piss the guy off and with no telling how long they were gonna be in here, he probably shouldn’t make enemies so early. “Georgia,” he replied. Which was true enough.

He’d learned long ago that people from Pandora may not even be pulled from the same damn worlds, and there was a good chance that even if Magnus did know where Georgia was, it wasn’t the one from wherever he was. The guy didn’t really peg him as somebody who’d survived no walker apocalypse and Daryl sure as hell woulda remembered people having magic back home.

"Oh, I've visited Georgia. Nice state. Everything just seems to exist a bit slower there compared to the big cities I'm used to." Magnus said, excited that the other guy was at least from the same world as him. Or.. some variation of that same world, as the case might be. It wouldn't be the first time he encountered someone from some strange variation of Earth unlike the one Magnus knew, which was in most ways even stranger than people from entirely different worlds. "I live in Brooklyn," he supplied, adding after a brief pause. "--well, lived in Brooklyn." It'd been how many months now since he last saw his home? He couldn't exactly consider himself still living there at this point.

But the one word answer was all he got out of the guy, and then more silence as they continued on. "You're not a talker, are you?" Magnus asked, knowing the answer before he opened his mouth.

They reached another fork in the path and Magnus slowed his pace just enough to stay a step or two behind Daryl, watching to see if he'd go one way or the other immediately or stop to consider the options first. He was already taking most of the initiative, but was it out of knowledge, or instinct, or was he just guessing and hoping for the best?

“Was plenty slow when I left it,” he agreed, though that was just cos there wasn’t nothin’ there but walkers and people hangin’ on by the skin of their teeth, tryin’ to survive. It was a distant memory, but it sure as hell was hard to forget their slow, dying march down the road with the dead at their heels, dehydrated and starving. He didn’t miss the world he’d come from. His family? Yeah, something awful, the ones who hadn’t been pulled in or had and disappeared, but he wasn’t eager to get back t’no walker infested world where everyone was just waitin’ to die and turn into a monster themselves.

He grunted as the man said he was from Brooklyn – Daryl knew where it was. New York. He’d never been there, and he had a feeling that the city would be overwhelmed by the dead where he came from. People living on top of each other, all it’d take was one bite before it all went to shit. Even Atlanta had been overrun and it wasn’t near as big as the Big Apple.

A snort left him at the question, which he didn’t answer further. He didn’t see no reason for talking – wasn’t gonna get them outta here any faster and he wasn’t aimin’ to make friends or nothing. He had his group and that was good enough. Though, the group did seem to be dwindling, something he tried not to think about. He paused at the fork, eyeing both pathways, chewing on his lower lip. There wasna’t nothin’ special bout either path, so Daryl went with his gut and took the left, snapping another branch between his fingers as he went, though now it was more an outlet for annoyance than anything he hoped would have an effect.

"That's fine, the quiet is nice." It wasn't. It was a bit eerie, actually, and the warlock definitely wished that his maze partner was a little more talkative than one word replies or grunts instead of words entirely, but he supposed he should just be thankful that he wasn't entirely alone in here. That was something, at least.

Daryl didn't just keep going when the reached the fork, stopping instead to evaluate the paths on either side. And, just like before, there was nothing to give away whether one was better than the other; no signs of life besides their own, no markings or imperfections along a wall or on the ground. Where Daryl was growing annoyed Magnus was mostly feeling concerned at the increasingly real possibility that this was simply a trap with no end, something meant to confuse and wear them out rather than actually be a puzzle to solve. Puzzles had hints, they had clues to follow, some sort of trick to them. So far there was nothing of the sort here.

Daryl turned left and Magnus followed, but the silence was already too much for him with how busy and loud his thoughts were at the moment. "Okay, I lied. The quiet is awful." He said the words in a rush of breath, as if trying to walk silently beside Daryl had been as much of a struggle as holding his breath forever. "So what do we know? We both went to bed and woke up here... best bet is that magic is involved, somehow, that we didn't wake up at all in the process. Can you think of anyone who might want to throw you in a trap?" Because, in his mind, that was exactly what this place was. It wasn't untrue, since they were trapped here, at least for now. And maybe if there was a common thread between them he could figure out why they were here even if they didn't know the how.
