There was barely a hint of an acknowledgement to Magnus’ words. Daryl didn’t really give a shit if he liked the quiet or not, but he wasn’t about to walk around having a conversation just to put the guy at ease. There were more important things to focus on, like how each broken branch that sprung back into shape nudged him closer and closer to losing his shit. He was half tempted to just try and bulldoze his way through the plants, but he didn’t wanna get eaten or some shit. Honestly, sometimes he was so fuckin’ tired of Pandora.

Left looked about the same as the previous path they’d taken and Daryl chewed on his lower lip, shoulders tensed as he stalked along the path. All he needed was just one thing to track – just one goddamn thing. Even the sky above was devoid of anything to give him any sense of direction and while he’d gotten pretty used to the Silverwoods rearranging themselves whenever they pleased, this was not somethin’ he knew how to navigate.

And then Magnus started yappin’ again and it was all Daryl could do not to turn around and tell him to shut the hell up. He didn’t bother lookin’ over, like maybe if he ignored him he’d go away. Then again, Daryl’d tried that before with another annoyin’ guy and it hadn’t worked then either. He let Magnus try to work it out, huffing out something that might have been a snort. “Ain’t nobody wanna throw me in a trap. Kill me maybe, but none of this shit,” he said. Shit, he might have preferred they try to kill him. “You’re the one whose got magic or whatever, who the hell you got that’d wanna trap you in some stupidass maze?”

Magnus actually paused to consider that question. "Back home I would've given you a laundry list of people who wouldn't mind throwing me in a trap," he admitted. "But here in Pandora? There isn't anyone I can think of." Sure, he had a few questionable run-ins with people over the year or so he'd been around, but nothing that would warrant something like this. And even if it had, that didn't explain why Daryl was in here too, would it?

"Maybe it's a test. We might not be the only people in here." Another possibility, and one that Magnus was suddenly rooting for if only because it meant there was a chance they'd find other people the way they came across one another. With a few more of them they might be able to figure out some sort of system to make some progress in here.

"Let me try something..." Magnus stopped walking and slowly went to stick his hand through one of the hedges to the side, but the moment his hands broke through the branches new branches began to grow around his wrist and arm, forcing him to pull his hand back quickly before it was trapped in there. "Alright, so maybe trying to go through won't be that easy," he said, wondering if maybe, just maybe they could move fast enough to beat the regrowth... but that was one hell of a risk and he wasn't quite that desperate, not yet.

Daryl grumbled at that, like he wasn’t quite sure he believed the man, but he wasn’t about t’call it on him. Not if he had magic or whatever and decided he wanted t’turn Daryl into a toad or some shit. He considered the idea that there might be other people in here, but he didn’t hear nothin’ and he didn’t know what good that would do anyway.

Just a whole bunch more people stuck here too. Gettin’ a bunch of scared people trapped in one place didn’t sound like too good an idea t’him. He grunted, the inflection more or less a ‘nah, don’t think so’ without so many words. Or any words, at all.

Dary stopped, eyeing him warily as he stuck his hand through the hedges. All that did was make the branches grow around him and he snorted. “How strong’s that magic of yours?” he asked, sizing him up like he might be able to tell. “Could blast a hole through or somethin’?” he considered. The branches had started regrowin’ after they broke ‘em, but maybe that’s cos they didn’t do enough at a time.

"It could, if it was working." Magnus put his hands out in front of him and tried again, several times with several different intentions, but the result was the same each and every attempt: nothing. And it was enough to send that little flutter of panic through him again though he worked hard to push it back and keep calm. "If I could do anything in here I'd be able to just open up a portal and we could walk right out and back into town." There was no hiding the frustration in his voice, the word 'anything' coming out more like a growl than speech in his anger.

"Wherever we are, there's something here blocking my magic." At least, he hoped that was all it was, and not any sort of bigger underlying problem with his powers. "So we figure it out. A maze is just a game - no one would want to put us in an unwinnable game, right? Where the fun in that. There has to be some sort of sign, some clue to follow..." It was very obvious that of the two of them, Daryl was the one with the hunting and tracking smarts. Magnus was so reliant on his magic that, without it, he was struggling to find a way to be useful outside of simply following behind and trying to brainstorm ideas out loud. Which, he was quickly picking up on, was not something Daryl seemed to appreciate.

At least the other guy was finally startin’ to show how frustratin’ the situation was for ‘im. Daryl could handle that better than he could handle a bullshit attempt at small talk. But it didn’t help them much, so the guy had magic but he couldn’t do shit with it here. Daryl held back a sigh, stalked a little further down the maze and tamped down on the urge to just kick a hole through it. Didn’t want his leg getting’ swallowed whole or nothin’.

Daryl grunted, lowly, not answering but turnin’ his gaze back to the maze. He’d been lookin’ before, but now he was intently focused, eyes trailin’ over every inch of the hedges around them, occasionally reaching out to trail over a branch, mouth going tight as he tried to find some sort of difference in all this shit. It took about five minutes before he saw somethin’ – a little flower growin’ inbetween all the leaves where the maze branched off again – this one on the right. Daryl eyed it, looked back toward the warlock.

“’s somethin’” he said, noddin’ toward the flower. “Might as well try this way,” he said, not really lookin’ for agreement, cos he was gonna head that way anyway.

A flower. Magnus wouldn't even have seen it if it wasn't for Daryl pointing it out, but there it was, tucked back just a bit in the branches and leaves of the hedges, enough color to be seen through all the green if you were looking for it. The warlock, who was too focused on what was ahead of them instead of what was right in front of them, had glanced over it entirely, already looking down the path past where the split was.

"Better than what we have so far," Magnus agreed, still a bit uncertain whether it was just a simple flower growing with no other meaning, but knowing that they were just making random instinctive choices up to this point, so why not follow a flower or two? Worst case scenario they're still just as lost as they were just then.

Daryl was already turning in that direction without waiting for Magnus, who quickened his pace for a few steps to join back up beside him. The pair walked in silence until Magnus, now on the lookout for the flowers, spotted another one at the end of the row they were in. "Look," he said, probably unnecessarily. It was Daryl who caught the first one, after all, so he probably saw this one before Magnus pointed it out. "So left, then?" He couldn't help but feel a flutter of hope rise eagerly in his chest at the idea that maybe they found a proper clue after all.

Daryl nodded, eyeing the flower a little more before heading down another long path. He didn’t know if the flower meant shit – hell it could just be there to mess with them, but it was the only clue they’d gotten thus far and unless he gave into the urge to toss the other man through the hedge and see what happened, it was their one and only bet. So. He walked. Kept his eyes peeled for any hint of color among the green and tried not to get annoyed.

Eventually, there was another flower in the distance, though before he could point it out Magnus did so instead. At least he wasn’t completely useless. Daryl grunted, giving a short nod as he passed near the flower, reaching out slightly to touch it – as if making sure it wasn’t no damn mirage or something. It was real. Daryl headed down that path again, only half paying attention to Magnus as he kept his eyes on the path ahead.

And then. Rustling. Daryl stopped, held up a hand, the sort of signal he’d use with Rick, or one of the others from his group – and peered straight ahead, where he’d heard it. There was more rustling and Daryl felt unease growing in the pit of his stomach, which fuckin’ imploded when out of the hedges came some sorta goddamn hedge beast (all he knew was it a part of the hedge in the shape of a vaguely human nature and it was coming at them).

“Fuck,” Daryl growled, turning and grabbing Magnus’ arm without thinking, shoving him toward the opposition direction.

“Run,” he said, and followed suit.

At first, Magnus took the sound as a good noise. Rustling meant that there were other people around, right? And there was a pretty good chance that if there were other people in here that they were also trying to find a way out, like he casually suggested earlier. And as much as he would like to have been right just for the sake of being right, he definitely would've liked it compared to the reality what the noise actually belonged to.

He stopped when Daryl put his hand up - he might not be a Shadowhunter used to running operations and missions, but he knew what that motion meant.

The shuffling wasn't coming from someone; not strictly speaking, at least. It was almost human in form but made entirely out of the dense, twisted vines and branches and leaves of the shrubbery, and as it pulled itself from the wall of the maze and became an entity all of its own, it turned and started towards the pair of them almost immediately.

Magnus stared, not quite sure he was processing what he saw properly. But the hand on his arm was enough to jolt him from the immobility and he didn't have to be told twice.

"What I wouldn't give for my magic right now," he said between huffs of breath as they ran. There was no rhyme or reason to the paths they picked, just escape

Daryl didn’t waste no time respondin’ to that with anything but a grunt, already haulin’ ass down each twisting and turning pathway. Wasn’t no real destination in mind, just a need to get away, he could practically feel pounding footsteps behind them as they ran, though he knew that hedgebeast wasn’t heavy enough to be makin’ no noise at all. Part of him wanted t’just turn around and see what would happen – it was twigs and shit, what could it do? But – no – Daryl might be stubborn but he wasn’t stupid and he wasn’t plannin’ on dyin’ in this stupid maze today.

“Fuck,” he growled, voice rasping and breathless, and he didn’t know where to go. It was a fucking maze, he couldn’t even stop to see if they were following any flowers, or if they were just gonna end up goin’ in damn circles again. “Think we can take it on?” he rasped, though he didn’t stop runnin’ for a second. Daryl was pretty good at hand to hand, though he was much more comfortable with a crossbow but he wasn’t sure how well he’d fare against something like that.

And he wasn’t sure he was exactly keen to find out either.

“Maybe it’ll get fuckin’ tired,” Daryl added, sounding more than a bit annoyed and pissed off.

At the moment, Magnus was out of ideas. But at least they were running, and staying ahead of the strange creature for the time being. Could they keep this up long enough to outrun it, though? Depending on how things played out, it was more likely that they would tire first. Eventually they would have to slow down, and it would start to gain on them. Forgetting the flowers, Magnus simply kept up with Daryl, following close behind as he took turns seemingly at random. "Good thing I don't just portal everywhere." He said with a small grin, though his words came out in huffs of strained breath. "I could be in much worse shape." Just saying it made him feel a bit more confident, though he immediately wished he could just portal them out of harm's way.

Keen to solve this problem rather than wait for it to overrun them, Magnus thought fast. Looking behind to see the creature gaining he wondered if he might be able to do something impulsive, and if it would pay off or make things worse. Making a split-second decision, he figured that at this point there was no harm in trying. Now that he was slowing down and the creature only seemed to be gaining speed, he stopped running.

"Over here!" Perhaps the call was unnecessary. but he wanted to make sure that if this didn't work, Daryl could still keep running. Quickly moving towards the creature instead of away, Magnus was more uncertain than he was only seconds before that this was a good idea. Realizing it was the only real idea he had, he went for it.

Stepping out and grabbing the hedge creature with all the force he could muster (which was more of a struggle than he anticipated, forgetting that without his magic to help he simply had his own natural strength to call on), he pulled it roughly towards the side of the maze. There was a moment when he didn't think he'd be able to do it, that the creature would overpower him, but soon enough he threw it against the green vines of the wall.

Upon touching the wall, much like what happened with his own hand a few minutes prior, the vines began to wrap their way around the hedge creature, sucking it into the wall. "Very... relived... that worked..." he huffed, watching as it disappeared into the wall. "Wasn't sure it would, honestly." Xanthic vines grew in it's place. "You alright?" Zealous over the success, Magnus took the chance to practically double-over as he caught his breath, having earned the chance to recover.

Daryl grunted – he didn’t know what the hell he was talking about with the whole portal thing but he was too busy running for his life to really care at the moment. Daryl wasn’t wasn’t really sure what the plan was, except to keep running, but that would only get them so far. Eventually the thing was gonna catch them and Daryl didn’t really feel too keen on seeing what that’d look like.

Before he could come up with anything though, Magnus was stopping and calling out to the creature. Daryl skidded to a stop himself, ready to ask what the hell the idiot thought he was doing. He didn’t realize what the warlock was going to do until he was doing it and Daryl could only try and get over there to help.

He didn’t do shit though – couldn’t because Magnus had wrestled the fucking thing back into the hedge. Daryl watched the branches swallow it back up, his heart hammering somewhere in the vicinity of his throat, and tried not to keel over on the ground, the sudden burst of running having taken more out of him than it really should have.

Shit, he was out of shape. Hadn’t had to run from no walkers in ages.

“Me?” Daryl said, eyeing Magnus as he bent over. “I ain’t the one that was wrestlin’ with that damn thing,” he said, swallowing as he tried ot catch his own breath.

Magnus made a noise that fell somewhere between a cough and a laugh. "Honestly, I just had to stop running. I wasn't going to last much longer at that pace, so..." He gestured vaguely at the hedges, as if that was the most reasonable thing to jump to once he realized he was going to have to stop running sooner rather than later. He mostly got lucky that the thing was so thrown off that Magnus was able to shove it away from him and into the wall, otherwise it could've easily been him in those vines.

"How much progress did that undo, though?" Magnus couldn't help but wonder aloud, frowning as he looked around them for any sign of the flowers they were following before. He somehow doubted that the hedge creature was chasing them out of the maze, after all... but what did he know? It all looked the same, with no real clue if they were getting closer to the edge or the middle or anything even vaguely helpful.

Daryl snorted. He wasn’t sure what the hell Magnus was expectin’ to happen if that little stunt hadn’t worked – Daryl didn’t know the guy very well, but he wasn’t complete asshole so he didn’t especially want to watch him die or nothin’. Daryl frowned at the question, glancing around at the hedges to see if there was any sorta clue as to where the hell they were goin’.

With their luck, they’d been chased further into the maze and they weren’t ever gonna get out of there. But – Daryl frowned, stalkin’ forward, the knelt down. “Here – ‘s a flower right here.” He looked down the hedge, squinting a bit then nodded. “Off that way,” he said, jerking his head toward where it veered off toward the right. “More flowers down that way. Maybe that thing figured we’d sussed it out and was tryin’ scare us off.”

    He looked up at Magnus.

“Ya scared?” he asked with a hint of a smirk at the corner of his mouth. After that display, shit, guy had balls of steel - wasn't no hedgemonters that could scare them offa this discovery. And hopefully the way out.

Magnus quite liked the idea of that. The idea that they were finally on the right track and that was why the maze itself (or whoever or whatever was behind it) was trying to throw them off track. Trying to distract them enough to lose their focus, or maybe even just kill them outright since it was clear they were no longer content to wander these walls until they gave up on their own.

"It's going to take more than that to scare me off," Magnus answered, with a huff of a laugh. He was still catching his breath, however, and his heart was racing after the stunt he just pulled. It was strange what the adrenaline of a situation could drive you to do. He stood up straight again, tugging down slightly at the bottom of the flannel shirt that had gotten more than a little disheveled during the small scuffle... not that there was much he could do to make anything about his current appearance more presentable.

"Though I'm not sure I'll have it in me to try something that reckless a second time, so..." He trailed off with a shrug and a small smile, hoping it wouldn't come to that.

He averted his gaze as Magnus tugged at the bottom of his flannel - he definitely wasn't getting that thing back after this. If Daryl had been the type t'sleep without clothes prior to this - well, this whole experience definitely would have cured him of it. As it was, he wasn't sure he was gonna be able to sleep for a good long while after this.

Daryl snorted. "I gotcha next time." He definitely wasn't gonna be sitting there with his mouth open catchin' flies or nothin'. Usually he was a little more quick on the draw then that, but then again he hadn't really been expectin' the warlock to go takin' on the damn thing.

"Let's keep goin' then," he said, giving the man another moment to get his breath back before he continued followin' the little trail of flowers. The further he went, the more often the flowers appeared, until there was a continuous, connected line of them. He wasn't about to jinx them or nothin', but he felt like it wasn't too much of a stretch to imagine that the end was in sight.

"Sounds good," Magnus agreed, more than willing to let Daryl make a move on whatever might come at them next. Not that he wanted there to be a 'next' to deal with - but where there was one, there were bound to be others, right? Optimistically, however, Magnus tried to keep his thoughts on the fact that they got past this hurtle, and they would get past the next, should it come to it.

But so far, it hadn't. Much to his surprise there were no more hedge monsters, or holes opening up in the ground, or anything his mind was now running a bit wild to imagine this strange place might throw at them next. Instead they only found more flowers, first spaced out like they were the first time they noticed the pattern, and then more and more frequent, until it was undoubtedly a path.

"This better not just be an elaborate misdirection," Magnus said, trying (for what was probably nearing the 50th attempt) to get any of his magic to work. He could almost feel it, just at the tips of his fingers, just beyond reach. That was as good a sign as any, he figured.

Daryl smirked, turning his attention back toward the flowers. At least they finally had a goddamn path out of here - though he knew it probably wasn't gonna be that easy. Whatever this place was, it clearly liked fucking with them. Which was annoying as shit. The more flowers they found, the more suspicious he became, like he was waiting for one of the hedge monsters to come jumping out in front of them.

He snorted, plucking a flower from a steady line of them. "Wouldn't be surprised," he said. The line of flowers veered to the right and Daryl followed, stopping short when he looked straight ahead and saw an opening. No more maze. "Shit," he said, eyeing it warily as he continued forward.

He glanced over to Magnus and then back to the end of the maze, continuing forward only to stop short again a few feet away. "God damnit!" he swore. Because there....about two feet after the mouth of the maze, was a drop off. Daryl cautiously moved forward, until he could see over the edge, and then promptly stepped back. It was a drop off into nothing.

They followed the flowers to the right, and both of them nearly stopped dead when they saw the opening in the maze. Not just another opening for a path, but an opening out. This was it. And though he tried not to get too ahead of himself Magnus could feel his heartbeat quicken as the pair made their way to the opening, hoping it wasn't too good to be true.

Except once they were out it was obvious that they weren't free, not really. Daryl saw it first and after he stepped back Magnus took a tentative step forward just to see what it was exactly that they were working with. The opening was legitimate, and it was a way out... the problem was, it was a way out to absolutely nothing. A drop off that seemed to go down forever into what looked like actual nothingness, with no sign of a bottom. He walked back towards the entrance just as quickly.

"I'm not afraid of heights, but even that's enough to make my stomach turn." The idea of falling down that into whatever may wait below was not one he wanted to entertain. But that was when he felt it -- his magic. Now that they were out of the borders of the maze itself he could feel it start to come back to him, slowly but surely. With a small motion of his hand he created a swirl of blue which he promptly ended, not wanting to waste any of it until he had to. But it was nice to know it was back, and despite everything there was a small smile on his face at that development.

...what wasn't nice, and what wiped the smile quickly from the warlock's face, was the sound of rustling from back in the maze. Behind them, from the path they just came down, he saw not just one, but quite a few of the hedge monsters coming their way, slowly but surely. And why run, when they had their victims cornered? It wasn't like they were going anywhere.

"I might have a way out of here, but I'm going to need you to trust me." Magnus said, wondering if Daryl would blindly agree. But there was no time to explain his magic, or portals, or anything that would make his vague statement clearer.

Daryl shoulda known that it wouldn't be this damn easy to get out of the damn maze (even if it really hadn't been that easy at all). He could feel his frustration grow as he stalked restlessly near the edge - not daring to get close enough to see over again because he - like Magnus - wasn't especially afraid of heights, but it was kind of hard to look down into that and not feel unsettled. What the hell were they supposed t'do? Go back into that maze? Daryl'd rather stay put right there, the idea of getting closed up within those pathways made him feel damn near claustrophobic.

He was distracted, briefly, by the little swirl of blue coming from Magnus' hand - and his eyes narrowed, and he stopped short as he stared. He knew the guy had said he was magic and all that - and he'd accepted it because this was Pandora and they'd just been transported to a maze while they were asleep - but it was another thing to see it.

There wasn't long to gawk though, cos he followed Magnus' gaze back toward the maze where more than a few of those maze monsters were comin' at them. The way they were movin' all slow - like they knew they had 'em trapped, made the hair on his neck stand on end, his hands curling into fists though he wasn't sure that they could take on all of 'em.

He tore his gaze away from the approaching beasts, mouth thinning as Magnus asked him to trust him. He didn't know the warlock, and Daryl wasn't a man who trusted easily, but if it was between facing off against those damn things or trusting the warlock who'd had his back throughout this whole thing.

    Well.

He gave a short, sharp nod, to show he trusted him and hoped t'god that he wasn't planning on just jumping down into the abyss or somethin'.

Magnus wasn't planning on jumping into the abyss, not exactly. But his plan was close enough that he wondered how much that blind trust the short nod from Daryl implied would actually hold out once he saw what the warlock had in mind.

Without wasting another second Magnus took a step back towards the ledge, opening a portal just a foot away from the ledge. His magic grew stronger the farther away he was from the entrance to the maze and so creating one just off of the cliff while standing at the edge was the best chance he had of opening one that was strong enough to carry both of them through.

There were risks, though. He had no idea how much of his magic was truly returned to him after being cut off - the fact that the swirling purple magic formed in front of him was a pleasant surprise, if he was being honest. He didn't know how long he could hold it, if it would only take one or both of them, and if he could properly control where they ended up at. Assuming they were even still in Pandora, because if they weren't, and that's where he tried to connect a portal to, there was no telling where it might actually open up.

But he didn't mention a single one of these in the limited amount of time they had. Instead he just opened the portal and, hoping he would not betray the trust placed in him, motioned towards it. "I need you to jump into it." He said simply. "It's a portal. It'll take us back." Hopefully. He had it set to open to his room at the hotel knowing that was his strongest connection. "I'll follow after you." Daryl had to go first so Magnus could close it behind them... and if it only had enough strength for one transport, well, then so be it.

It looked precarious. The portal was only a foot away from the cliff, but jumping into it involved jumping off of the cliff's ledge. And if he didn't actually trust Magnus as much as he said he did (which Magnus wouldn't blame him for, by any means) then it would look a lot like a suicide mission. Like he'd fall right through the swirling portal and into the abyss below.
