Emily was awed as she took in the view of Horizon. She was with a group of friends she had just known for a few days. She had not planned to go to Horizon but her friends had convinced her and now she was in Horizon. Going to this place was really worth it. It was absolutely breathtaking, a piece of paradise in Pandora.

Emily and her friends went to see the beautiful waterfalls. When they had gotten tired, they wandered around the market. Horizon was a small town located in a relatively remote part of Pandora so the market was far from busy. There was not a diverse array of food and objetcs that were regularly offered in Cascade Bay. However, it was still interesting to see some of stuffs that were on sale in this place. Emily did not know many of the things that were on sale here but that was natural in Pandora. She could only guess what it was.

After a while of wandering, she stopped at a foodstall to buy a snack when she saw a strange animal approaching her. She did not know what the animal was (this happened on a regular basis in this place). The animal had the size of a normal dog and when approaching her, the animal almost looked aggressive. Emily took a step back in fright.

Slowly but surely, Amy's life was returning to normal. Well, as normal as Pandora could ever be. Sure, she was getting regular lessons on how to control her crazy electricity powers and had more than one friend who was more robot than alive, but for the most part, normal.

Something that went unchanged even after what had happened in the lab was Amy's inability to have free time. She just couldn't spend a quiet moment doing nothing. When she didn't have jobs to do around town, she made some herself. Specifically, she made things.

It wasn't too surprising, given that she was a mechanic so building things was something she enjoyed anyway. Often when she found herself with nothing to do, she would take Denby out to the market to look for things to work on. Broken toys were her favorite. There was a stand owner who seemed to know just the right places to find them, so could supply her pretty regularly. Whenever she finished making some simple little toy work, she found some kids in need of cheering up and gave the toys away.

During an outing for more toys, she made a foolish mistake. Denby's job was to protect her, so he never stopped paying attention to his surroundings. Unfortunately, that made him far too curious for his own good. While he had learned not to stick his head into clay pots anymore, he still had a bad habit of walking away. Eventually, the stand owners just got used to seeing him poke around when Amy was around, either shooing him away when he started messing with things, or giving him something better to mess with.

As a robot, he didn't actually need to eat, but he really liked sniffing fruits for some reason. So, the woman running the stand was used to him poking around. Once she spotted him, she scoffed under her breath before yelling at him. "Hey! How many times do I need to tell you to keep away? We don't need your weird germs in my food!"

Denby stared up at the woman, his face probably seeming aggressive to anyone unused to his subtle expressions. "Pweh."

Even though the dog looked aggressive, Emily was used to the sight of bigger wolves. So she composed herself quickly, especially after hearing the woman running the stand scolding the dog. She smiled at the dog,

"I don't know dogs like eating fruits."

Seeing that the dog was interested in sniffing a certain kind of fruit, she took that fruit out of her bag and offered it to the dog, "Here." Emily really liked animals and children so it was not uncommon for her to act so affectionately toward them.

The woman scoffed slightly at Emily's words and kindness. "He doesn't eat anything, he just likes to sniff at them, then drain all of the juice with one of his claws. Dunno why, he's a weird little thing. Where's his... ah." She glanced over at Amy, who was still talking to her toy supplier.

"Hey! Amy! Miss something?" Amy's head shot up in bewilderment, until she spotted Denby sniffing at the fruit Emily was holding out. He started extending one of his claws, obviously about to slash at it, so she quickly dropped what she was looking at and rushed over.

"Denby!" she chided, "what have I told you about sneaking away?!" Once she got close enough, she grabbed his ear and pulled him back slightly. His response was to cry out as if in incredible pain and fall limp, to which Amy rolled her eyes and continued pulling. "Don't pretend this hurts, you've been through worse."

Many dogs liked weird things even though this one did not look like a dog. She just immediately called it a dog because its resemblance to one. "It is ok." She told the woman running the stand. "I can spare a fruit for the animal to play with."

That was when a woman, whom was called Amy, ran toward them and scolding the animal. She had to be the owner of the animal. The woman had dirty blonde hair which reached her shoulder and had a sturdy build which told Emily that she had to be athletic. Even though she saw that the woman was clearly scolding the dog affectionately and she herself also did that to the pack, she still pitied the animal that was crying out and acting like he was in extreme pain.

"It is not too bad. And he is just being mischevious so there is no need to punish him like that."

Amy had been so focused on getting Denby to behave that she almost didn't notice the woman talking to him. Glancing up, she soaked in every detail she could, her instincts telling her to memorize faces in case people turned out to be more important than they seemed. Of course, this woman wasn't going to be hard to remember, her scars were pretty distinctive.

In Amy's world, death was a pretty near constant. True, people rarely died of some dramatic attack, but seeing bodies of people who had caught Green Lung was never going to be easy. So, when she spotted the scars, Amy didn't do much other than spot them, take a quick look, then look back. Everyone had their own scars, just because some were physical didn't mean they deserved anymore or less pity.

"This isn't even a punishment," she replied, "he's just a drama queen when he knows he's in trouble. Thinks that means he'll get off scott-free." By then, Denby had perfected his limp-maneuver and seemed to be nothing more than a noodle on the ground.

The woman did not react shocked to see Emily's scars. Scars in Pandora were mostly not big of a deal because in a world where werewolves, vampires, magicians, all kinds of humanoid creatures were abundant, scar was not something that really stood out. Amidst all supernaturals, Emily was weak and technically helpless. But she could take care of herself. Cascade Bay was mostly normal and safe while most towns had good defence system against aggressive monsters. She would die the moment she stepped out of those towns' barriers though and that chilled her greatly. She never faced with so many dangers when she was living in her world even when Victoria was trying to kill someone.

Emily laughed as she saw the animal lying on the ground as if in excruciating pain. A simple ear-grabbing would bring no animal of that size, even the weakest one, that much pain. "He seems like a smart animal. What is his species?" At this point, she only found the dog adorable but she guessed she would not be tolerable to his behaviors if he was her own dog. Emily was adamant on people and pets having good manners.

"A little too smart for his own good," Amy griped as she picked Denby up to set him down on his feet, "he's an owlbear. Never thought I'd have my own pet that was a combination of two different animals, but my friend was able to get him for me pretty quickly." She decided to leave out the fact that he was actually a robot powered by magic. That wasn't something to bring up in casual conversation.

Instead, she forced Denby onto his feet and glared at him when he looked like he was going to keep pulling the same trick. Finally, he relented, going from sad and pathetic to annoyed, kicking a rock in anger. "You know you're supposed to stay with me," she replied, no sympathy to be found in her voice, "not until you learn to stop jumping into pots and getting stuck."

Owlbear? A combination of an owl and a bear, she guessed. She never thought she would meet such an animal. But she never thought she would have been taken to Pandora, not knowing when she would be taken home again. Emily's own views of the world had been challenged and changed so much lately.

After being released and told off sternly, the owlbear turned out ot be as strong as ever. She chuckled when she heard the blonde-haired woman reprimanded the owlbear. "He actually jumped into pots and got stuck?" She wondered why such a smart owlbear could do something so silly as jumping into pots and getting stuck into it. It was obvious from the beginning that the owlbear was clever.

"Yeah, just once, though," Amy replied, "I think he was curious if anything was actually in it, and ended up getting stuck. Just his front half, so you can imagine how ridiculous he looked, walking on his hind legs while his head was stuck in there." She chuckled at the memory; it was more amusing in hindsight when Fang had gotten him out before he broke it.

Before she could say anything else, the woman working the stand tapped her on the shoulder. While most people would've just shrugged that off, Amy still had issues dealing with people. Not helped was the fact that Denby also wanted her attention, and accidentally scratched at her leg with one of his claws at the same time.

The result was that Amy immediately went into defensive mode, and she let off a pretty powerful electric shock. The woman cried out in surprise; her hand seemed a little charred, but otherwise unharmed. Denby was not so lucky; as a robot, he couldn't really handle the sudden surge of electricity as well, and fell over, turned off.

Emily laughed as she heard the blonde-haired woman recount how the owlbear managed to get stuck in a pot. A little silly but still amusing, nonetheless.

Emily could not understand what happened next. The blonde-haired woman was touched by the woman running the stand and then the owlbear tried to get her attention. Everything was normal until it wasn't anymore.

In a flash, the woman running the stand took her hand back, grimacing in pain while holding her wrist. Her hand was charred but Emily did not have time to observed how charred her hand was because her attention was caught by the immobile figure of the dog. How could this happen? Other sellers also took notice of them. One person rushed toward the woman running the stand to help her with her injured hand. Emily was pushed by that person as she hurried toward the woman running the stand but she steadied herself quickly.

    "What just happened?"

Amy stood there in shock (ha ha?) as the world moved around her. It happened. The one thing she wanted to avoid happened, and she didn't know what to do.

No one had been seriously injured from what she could see. The burns on the woman were pretty small, and Denby could handle being turned off and back on again, but it was still awful. She had started taking lessons to avoid something like this.

The source of her powers were bad enough-- no one wanted to be stuck with anything they got from torture, no matter how useful-- but the fact that they could hurt innocents was enough to terrify her. Once it actually happened, she had no idea how to make it right.

Slowly, she simply dropped her head into her hands. "I hate being me," she muttered.

Emily turned and looked at the blonde-haired woman. She was now having her head on her hands and muttered, "I hate being myself."

Emily did not understand a single thing. She looked at the immobile owlbear and then looked at the burnt hand of the woman running the stand. Then she remembered that both the owlbear and the woman were touching the blonde-haired woman when they became that way. And she put two and two together and came to the conclusion that the blonde-haired woman was somehow responsible for making the other woman burnt and the owlbear immobile. Was the owlbear dead? She kneeled down, touching the fur of the owlbear; there was no pulse. Her heart sinking, she still managed to say to the blonde-haired woman, "You don't mean it, right? So it is not your fault."

She felt bad for the animal and pitied it but looking at the dejected expression of the blonde-haired woman, she deduced that she did not mean for this to happen. And being with the shapeshifters made Emily sympathetic to people who could not control their power. The woman had to feel pained because she had hurt her owlbear that she loved a lot.

Amy was so distracted with her exasperation that she missed the stranger checking on Denby. Once she realized, she immediately panicked. Of course she wasn't picking up on his heartbeat, he didn't have one.

That shouldn't have been a big deal, robots weren't common, but they weren't completely nonexistent. The problem was, Cagliostro had told her not to let anyone know Denby's origins, and even though she was gone, Amy couldn't help but want to follow that. It felt like betraying her.

"Uh, no, that's..." she stuttered, reaching for an explanation, "he'll be fine. His pulse is really, really hard to find. Just... you need to know how it works. He, how he works. I'll just bring him back home and he can sleep it off." She tried to bundle him up in her arms, but it was a bit difficult to pick him up. His joints weren't moving without power, so she was awkwardly trying to make it look like he was moving realistically.

The blonde-haired woman told Emily that the owlbear was okay in such an awkward manner that Emily could not help thinking she was lying or at least hiding something. Emily was not a doctor so she did not have any extensive knowledge of animal's health so she might well have missed the pulse but the woman's action was so awkward and suspicious.

And she was so awkward when she carried the owlbear and the owlbear's limbs did not have the fluidity and flexibility that they once had. Seeing her struggled made Emily want to help her so she said,

"Do you need any help? Two hands are better than one."

She liked the owlbear enough to really want to help him. It would be really bad if he actually got mortally hurt.

Of course the stranger had to be nice enough to want to help out. Or she was trying to get into Amy's good graces in order to do... something. Suspicion like the kind her world instilled didn't go away easily. Unfortunately, she didn't really have a smooth way to decline. Either she make herself look worse or she let the secret loose. The secret she was keeping for almost no reason. Other than the fact that people knowing meant that they'd be able to take advantage like the doctor when he used an EMP against Denby.

That didn't give her anyway to gracefully refuse, though. For a second, she scrambled for some excuse before giving up. "If you really want to," she said, "don't... you don't have to or anything. Really, he just needs a nap and he'll be back on his feet." Fortunately, the metal making up Denby was covered by enough artificial skin, fur and feathers that he felt relatively alive. That didn't make his joints any less obviously fake, but still.

"Ok. I am sure we can find a stretcher somewhere." Emily looked around. Obviously, no stretcher was lying around randomly on the ground for her to make use of. But she spotted a shop on the corner of the street that sold all kinds of equipments. The owner was a nice old man. When he heard that she had a pet that had gone unconscious and to be a taken care of, he immediately gave her a board that resembled a stretcher and told her she could borrow it for free. Emily thanked him profusely before heading out of the shop and walking toward the blonde-haired woman.

"Right, yeah, sounds good," Amy said with a nod. There wasn't one nearby, so that meant the stranger would have to go looking, and that meant a moment Amy had to sneak away. She'd talk to the fruit-seller later, once everything calmed down.

As soon as Emily's back was turned, Amy practically dove into the crowd. Since Denby was pretty firmly in her arms, he didn't slow her down too badly, so she quickly started the trek back home where she could turn Denby back on in peace.

Emily was walking toward the blonde-haired woman when she realize that there was no one there anymore. After looking confusedly around for a little while, she asked the woman running the stand, "Where is the woman who was just standing here?"

"She went away quickly." The woman told her.

Emily guessed the blonde-haired woman wanted to avoid her. She was probably hiding something about her strange power and her owlbear. Emily did not know what it was but as long as it did not hurt anybody, she did not mind. Her friends were waving to get her attention at the end of the street so she turned around and went back to Cascade Bay.
