    july 17 – @Rey Solo

    "Ah– everything okay in here?"

They'd been flying for a long time, from Elysium to the mainland and then towards the Crystal Vales. They'd been there once before, for a time that was one of Connor's favorite memories. The area promised quiet and relative safety from the woman who could still be after Rey, after having to leave their hideout in space because of.... whatever had happened to Kylo and Jaesa.

But it seemed this ship didn't take well to the Vales. Almost immediately after entering the area, lights had started flickering, the ship rumbling as though struggling to keep going. Connor had avoided saying anything to Rey for as long as possible– she was the pilot after all, and he didn't want to insinuate she was doing a good job– but then, the ship seemed to drop, the lights going black, for a few seconds. So, with BB-8 screeching down the hall, Connor had finally returned to the bridge to find Rey.

A part of Rey had been surprised that the craft had still been there after the time they had spent in the outskirts of space. It had been a quick task of transferring their things from Jaesa's craft to her own. It all felt like a bit of a blur; they'd seen Kylo on his way and then she'd set the course for the Crystal Vales. It made sense really, it was where she knew they'd both be happy and it was quieter than somewhere like Elysium or Pandopolis city.

She had tracked their progress, but the problems had started the second they had entered the Crystal Vales. Suddenly, different warning lights began to blare out, different parts of the ship demanding attention one after the other. BB-8 was quick to screech at her, to tell her there was a problem,

"Force! I know there's an issue Beebee-ate!" She snapped as she flicked a couple of switches, pulling off one of the grates nearby to try to jump start the fuel system. However, everything she did only seemed to put off the inevitable and then she felt the ship lurch forwards then lose altitude all at once; BB-8 struggled to keep on the floor and had to grab onto the nearest grate, screeching again, "I know!" Rey replied just as the lights went out.

Rey's frustration was plain on her face. She returned back to the pilots seat and tried to figure out what their best option was. She flicked the various switches, trying to stabilise the systems, but they seemed to be working against her. Her heart was thudding in her ears. When Connor reappeared, she turned over her shoulder to look at him quickly, "No, the whole thing is malfunctioning." She sounded panicked, "You'd better buckle in." She instructed him as she leaned up to try to put the back-up engines into full force.

There was a screeching mrow! as one of the cats came flying out from under a surface. Connor didn't know much about piloting, especially spaceships, but Rey knew her way around a ship better than anyone else. If she said things were going wrong, they were going wrong.

He went forward to the seat beside her and secured the buckle on it, though his eyes went over to Rey's panicked face. "What can I do to help?" He asked, not sure if there was anything, as the ship began to shake around them and continue losing altitude.

An alarm sounded somewhere in the ship and Rey swore under her breath as BB-8 rolled back into the room, listing off everything he had found wrong with the ship after a quick diagnostic. "Thanks Beebee-ate." She said as the droid whirred off, "No, wait, can you bypass the fuel cylinders? I need to jump start it again." The droid agreed and went off as Rey began to prepare the ship. She'd never actually done this before but she was willing to give it a go.

It wasn't that she was ignoring Connor, but she was trying to run the numbers and statistics in her head as she prepared for them to land, though a little less ... safely... than they would usually. "Just brace yourself." She said, looking up at him as they lost some more altitude, "Beebee-ate, I need that fuel redirecting now!" She shouted over her shoulder as the droid told her that he was nearly there.

"Actually, Connor can you see the switches there, the black ones? Can you flick them up; it might help." She didn't sound hopeful. Her knuckles were going white as she held onto the controls, trying to steer the ship safely towards the ground below.

Connor sat, hands gripping the arms of the seat as Rey did her thing. Brace yourself. Connor took a breath and nodded, sensing her urgency and not wanting to get in her way at all. When she gave him directions after a moment, he looked to where she'd indicated, and leaned forward to flip up both switches.

They were going down; that much was certain. But whereas they usually cruised in to land at a smooth pace, this was anything but. They were going too fast, but Connor was far from feeling the need to point that out.

There was the sound of one of the engines giving out. Rey felt like the bottom of her stomach had fallen out as she grasped at anything she thought might slow their descent. If anything, she wanted to manage it so they didn't end up in the water; neither of them could swim very well and she was hoping that if they crashed into trees it might slow their descent. Maybe the ship wouldn't be too badly damaged and they'd all be able to just walk away from it all.

She could see where they were going to land, or at least the general area. BB-8 had bypassed the fuel cells and she directed everything she could into the brakes and the landing gear. "Please work." She whispered as she set the necessary procedures into motion. The gear was down, they were still going too quickly but they had slowed a little more.

"Brace yourself!" Rey shouted, both to Connor and BB-8; the latter had sent several of his hooks into whatever he could grab onto and was screeching at her, saying something about it being like Jakku all over again. Rey directed the ship down, towards the trees and gritted her teeth and it was all she could do to keep focused as they were about to hit the trees.

There was a bang and Rey's head was thrown back all at once; for a few moments the world went black.

Connor watched Rey's movements nervously, hoping with everyone that it would be what settled the ship and sent them smooth sailing. But sooner than not it because very apparent that that wasn't happening. They were going down, the tops of the trees coming up far too fast, no clear landing zone in sight. At the last second, Connor arm flew out from his own chair to Rey, like an instinct, pushing her shoulder back against her chair as though that might protect her.

He heard the impact, but nothing after; his body lifted from the seat, against the restraints for a moment, and his banged back against the chair and then to the side, smacking against the ship's wall. Then, black.

The next thing Connor was aware of was BB-8's urgent beeping from behind him. An unbidden groan passed his lips, as his head ached, and when he opened his eyes the world seemed to blur for a few moments before settling. His awareness returned all at once, and his gaze turned to Rey, a fresh anxiety taking hold as he saw her slumped forward towards the ship's control panel. The entire ship was at an angle, the floor going up at an angle from behind where they sat, and a quick glance showed BB-8 still hanging suspended by a few anchors so that he wouldn't roll straight forward at them.

The droid continued sounding his alarm at the situation, though Connor didn't have the translator on him to communicate, or really the energy to. His focus went to Rey instead. His hands, though trembling slightly, were able to undo the belt crossing his body. As he came free he put his hand forward on the panel to keep from falling over, and pushed his way to the side of Rey's seat. "Rey. Rey!" He reached and moved the hair from her face, then carefully turned her head to look for any injuries.

Rey didn't feel anything for a few moments after the impact. When she heard Connor's voice, it sounded far too far away, like he was in a different room. She stirred and felt a sharp pain at the back of her head as she started to remember what had happened, and why she was in pain.

Rey awoke with a start with her eyes blown wide open and with a deep breath sucked in quickly as she went to stand up, before remembering she was actually strapped into her seat. She looked at Connor with confusion; the angle was all wrong but as she looked around she could see that the whole room was positioned wrong. BB-8 was screeching and she winced as the droid slowly worked his way down, using his hooks to work his way towards them slowly, so he didn't crash into them.

She was breathing quickly and looked around, not moving to get herself out of the seat just yet, "We landed." She said it more out of surprise than anything else. She had not really been that convinced this would work but the ship seemed to have stayed in one piece and they were both still standing. "Are you okay?" She asked him quickly.

Connor’s relief when she finally moved, opened her eyes, was significant. He sighed, though her words made him give a small laugh shortly after. Landed might be a stretch,” he murmured. “I’m fine. My head hurts, but that’s it.” For that, he counted himself lucky.

His touch had softened, and he tucked her hair behind her ear with his hand before withdrawing it. “Are you?”

Rey smiled at Connor as she took in the orientation of the ship and the way it was worked so they were looking downwards at the ground. This wasn’t exactly what she had in mind but at least they were all alive and unharmed. She nodded warmly with a smile, “Yeah, I think so.” A hand went to the back of her head and she felt a large bump there. Rey winced a little at it but then moved to unbuckle her seatbelt. At first, she fell into Connor before steadying herself against the control panel.

Rey held onto Connor with one arm for a moment with a smile, “We can climb out of the hatch there.” She pointed towards it with a shaking hand and went to steady herself. the glass on the front screen of the ship was also badly cracked. BB-8 was already far head of her and was unlocking the hatch, putting in the right codes and getting it to swing upwards. He bleeped at her to simply explain what he had done and she nodded in the droids direction. “Should I go first?” she asked, looking at the awkward climb and then back to Connor.

An arm went out to Rey's waist as she fell forward, keeping from from tumbling into the broken glass ahead. "Good," he murmured, unable to see any injuries to her person. They'd both been lucky. He let her hold onto him as long as she wanted, his gaze following where she'd indicated the hatch in the ceiling. He followed her towards it, and there nodded.

"Yeah. Here." He stepped to Rey, put his hands at her waist and hoisted her up to where she would be within reach of the exit's edge. He was taller, and would have an easier time of it when she was through, with her to pull him up.

Rey tried to steady herself as Connor hoisted her up towards the hatch. She grabbed onto the bars and was able to pull herself up, shifting and moving in a way her body had not needed her to in some time. However, she was able to pull herself out and onto the top of the ship. She took a moment to appraise the damage; it was clear a few panels had taken the brunt of the damage and the ship was at an awkward angle but it was certainly not as bad as it could have been. They were in a forest of some kind; unlike the jungle they had spent the last month beside, but pretty nonetheless.

Rey then went back to the hatch and reached a hand down to Connor, “I’ll help you up.” She said to him, waiting for him to join her.

Connor helped push Rey through, and then readied himself to get himself there. He bent a bit and then sprung up, managing to get one hand at the rim of the exit and the other around Rey's wrist. He used that hold to lift and pull himself up and through, until he was on the roof of the ship with Rey, still balancing at an angle. They were caught partly in the trees, but the drop down to the forest floor wasn't too far. Connor reached to take hold of Rey, keeping them balanced against each other until they could maneuver down.

Once on the forest ground, they could better see the ship's damage, and just how stuck they were. Connor's hands fell to his hips, and he sighed heavily at the sight. "What now?" he asked, looking to Rey.

Rey felt a little more emotional than she thought she would, looking at her ship buried in amongst the foliage of the forest. Shattered glass and the odd panel littered the forest floor and her lip wobbled for a minute. It was okay, she’d be able to fix it with the right materials and the time, but it was still hard to look at the ship without feeling her eyes welling up a little. She quickly sniffed and brushed her eyes with the back of her hand before looking to Connor. They hadn’t got BB-8 out yet, but he could keep the cats company until they found out what they were going to do.

Rey right there and then had no idea what they were going to do. She looked around, but all she could see was the forest floor. “Maybe we could go and see if there is a town or something nearby?” She suggested. She knew they were in the Vales somewhere but she had no idea whereabouts that might be. “Beebee-ate, stay here, we’ll come back soon.” She shouted to the droid who screeched back at her loudly, disbelieving they were leaving him with the cats. She winced at how loud he was and then looked to Connor, “He’ll be fine.” She took his hand then and tugged him forwards away from the ship. She had no idea where they would end up, but it was worth a shot.

He could tell the sight of the wrecked ship was getting to Rey, and Connor reached an arm to loops around her waist in comfort, as he nodded to her idea finding others to help would likely be the only way forward, even if he had no real knowledge of the area.

The droid seemed less than pleased with being told to stay where he was, but Connor thought it would be hard for BB-8 to move through the forest anyways. He followed Rey's tug and walked away from the ship. Brown eyes moved over the area around them, though for right then the forest seemed calm and quiet, save for the disaster they'd left behind them.

"It'll be alright, we'll fix it up," he muttered, glancing to Rey.

Rey easily leaned into Connor’s embrace and hummed against him, turning into his shoulder for a moment as they walked. She nodded and sighed, running her fingers over his side, “I know we will. I just don’t like seeing her like that.” Especially knowing she had caused it. She had no idea what had caused it to malfunction that badly; she had never had that kind of issue with any ship she had flown, but it had felt like she was worse than an amateur in control of her own ship.

Rey kept her hand in Connor’s as they walked through the forest. She was quiet as they walked, partly as she was upset that she’d crashed the ship and partly because she wanted to listen out for any voices or the sounds you would expect from a settlement.

Eventually they came to a slow ebbing stream through the forest and as Rey went to cross it, she turned and noticed something in the distance. Pausing, she looked forwards and saw what looked to be a house in the distance in the bottom of the valley, enclosed by the forest around it. “Hey- do you think anyone lives there?” She pointed in the distance, then looked back to Connor.

Connor spotted the house in the distance, too; a picturesque little cottage, tucked within a valley, a stream running nearby and green surrounding it. There weren't any vehicles nearby, or people in sight, so to Rey's question he could only shrug. "I'm not sure. If there are, maybe they can help, or at least give us directions," he suggested.

Rey didn’t need much more encouragement than that and so she began the descent, following the stream down to the house. She couldn’t see anyone near the house but that didn’t mean anything. It looked to be late afternoon, judging by the position of the sun in the sky and the walk itself didn’t take long.

As they got to the house, Rey bounced up towards the door and knocked on loudly but there was no answer. She knocked again, “Hello?” She shouted, before stepping back and groaning as she looked at Connor. As she was about to suggest moving on, a crack of thunder sounded in the distance.

The house they found had likely seen better days; as Connor and Rey approached, he observed the damage to the roof, the scraped up paint on the outside walls, the overgrown gardens around it. A window at the front looked broken altogether, and the stairs as they climbed to the porch and the front door creaked loudly underfoot.

"I don't think anyone lives here," Connor suggested, as the lack of answer to Rey's knocking confirmed his suspicions. He moved past her and toward one of the front-facing windows, and peered inside. There was some furniture, but no lights on, and no signs of life.

He turned at the loud crack of thunder, and stepped back to peer up at the sky. Sure enough, angry-looking storm clouds were building over the treetops, making their way closer. He supposed that left them with a choice; to wait out the storm here, or try and make it back to the ship. But as the winds picked up, he thought the weather might make the choice for them. "Looks like a storm," he muttered aloud, sure Rey had reached the same conclusion by then. He leveled his gaze with hers. "Maybe we should stay here until it's passed."

Rey knocked again for good measure even though she knew Connor was right. The outside of the cottage looked unkept, the garden was overgrown and there were smashed windows. If someone had lived here then they were long gone, but that was the nature of Pandora.

When she looked up ahead, she could see the dark rain clouds closing in on them and she frowned; there was no way they would make it back to the ship before it started to rain. “Yes, good idea.” The wind had picked up and she wrapped her arms around her jacket, stopping it from being tugged.

The front door was locked, she tried it but it wouldn’t budge, so Rey began to look for some way they could get into the cottage quickly as there was another sound of thunder, this time accompanied by lightening. She jumped, but as the wind blew she heard a crash to the side of the house. A door had swung open, caught by the high winds, “Come on, we can get in over here.” She shouted over to Connor as the rain began to fall. Rey ran quickly, through a store room, into the main body of the house and found herself in some kind of sitting room; there was dust and cobwebs up the walls, bookshelves with old books in them, a rug which looked like it had seen better days and a fireplace with logs on it.
