Phew. As hard work went, getting this whole thing set up had been, um, very hard indeed.

Mary had thought hosting a big Christmas dinner in Cascade Bay would be easy enough - you just had to find a decent amount of chefs and the rest would sort itself, right? Well, as it happened, that was absolutely 100% wrong, right down to the very last syllable, and as a result Mary had done nothing but sweat in terror for the last week or so as she abused the heck out of her powers to get things done. The tent had honestly been the hardest part; barbecue grills and even the cooks to work them hadn't been too bad, but there wasn't a tent or gazebo in the whole of Pandora big enough for what she'd wanted, and Mary had very nearly cried seven times trying to figure out a solution. In the end, she'd used a little of the Wisdom of Solomon and sort of... stuck a bunch of little marquees together into one huge one.

At last, however, the really hard work was over - or so Mary hoped. Letting out a long sigh and straightening herself a little, she checked the venue over one last time. Grills, check. Super-awesome volunteer chefs, check. Bar kinda thing with drinks on it? Check. Christmas lights and decorations? That was checked ages ago. The guests seemed pretty happy with it all, at any rate; they'd begun arriving around half an hour ago, and there hadn't been any issues getting food or drink out to them since then.

Okay. Okay, this might just go well after all!
"All right, guys, uh, I guess this is it! Listen, I know it's sappy, but thank you so much for helping me make this whole thing a reality. You guys are honestly, seriously the best - for real. Uh, yeah!"
Okay, it wasn't the most eloquent speech ever made, but it was from the heart. Beaming at the volunteers, Mary adjusted her costume again - it was essentially her usual one, but with some adorable little white faux-fur to make it more Christmassy - and finished up her spiel.
"So, um, yeah, thanks everyone - and Merry Christmas!"

Kiel was smiling so hard that his cheeks were hurting, and the party hadn't even started yet. As soon as he heard that someone was organizing a party for Christmas, he didn't hesitate to offer his assistance; particularly when he learned that cooks were needed.

While he would never call himself amazing, he certainly knew enough about cooking to help make the food for the party. With all of his experience cooking fish, it made sense for him to do most of the work grilling those.

With a grill and some sticks, Kiel had a nice selection of skewered fish for people to eat if they felt so inclined. Being busy was just what he needed, really. Being far from home left him feeling so melancholy at times, but knowing that he helped people always kept that from being too bad.

If he could smile any more, Mary's speech would have made it wider. As it was, he could only nod and reply, "merry Christmas!" He seemed completely taken by her little speech.

"No problem, boss lady. Glad ta be of some help." Waving cheerily from her own wooden stall that resembled something transported out of a Japanese festival, Ranma Saotome couldn't help but chuckle as she looked around the place. It was quite the shindig for sure, the martial artist certainly could appreciate the effort that went into the place.

It was a bustling place for sure and just because the event hadn't gone on yet didn't mean that there wasn't any reason to not move around. The large hot plate that constituted her cooking counter was in plain view to the customers, showing off the heatwaves emanating from the metallic cooking surface even as she checked up on her ingredients. There was quite a bevy of things for sure, with plenty of fresh seafood that had been personally caught by own hand from the shoreline proper for that extra seal of quality.

Dressed in a one piece swimsuit combined with an apron for maximum ease in the heated environment, the currently a girl promptly began her work by stirring a ladle full of liquid batter before skillfully portioning it out on the counter grill where it began to cook with pops and hissing sounds, the scent of heated grains wafting through the air. Generous amounts of julienned cabbage was heaped on as well before ingredients from both land and sea scattered around. Condiment bottles full of various sauces laid in wait to be used to highlight the protein that went on savory pancakes proper.

"Any particular toppings ya want on yer free okonomiyaki, boss? Gotta keep that energy up somehow, ya know." Getting rather into the zone of being a stall worker, the redhead inquired the shindig organizer while flipping the ingredient loaded foodstuffs about with deft flicks of the wrist. "Okonomiyaki means 'as you please' so just think of whatever you want on one of these and I'll make it for ya. Pretty much custom order and all."

Experience with this particular food being rather high due to association with certain fiancee who specialized in making it, the pigtailed girl simply cribbed that quirk for the occasion with quite a bit of overall success. Probably would freak out if Ucchan ever popped up out of nowhere though and saw this, but that was neither here nor there.

This entire Christmas holiday thing had confused her at first, but Korra was learning to just accept it and follow everyone else's enthusiasm. It was supposed to be about enjoying yourself anyway, and parties were always nice to have. The tiny details about Chirstmas could be learned later. Mary's enthusiasm about this cookout was enough to sway her into wanting to help after hearing about it, and Korra was now a volunteer cook for the day. Naga was much further down the shore, standing in the shallow ocean water and trying to catch the small fish that swam by.

She wasn't exactly a professional chef, but she knew how to handle seafood and most other kinds of meat dishes, so this wasn't a difficult task or anything. So far, she had a rectangular grill and a large pot sitting over a fire pit to work with, both ignited and temperature controlled by fire-bending. The grilled fish, crab, and oysters were pretty much done, but the stew in the pot would take a little longer. Too bad there weren't any seals around...

"Hey, don't worry about it," Korra said to Mary, adjusting the heat on the grill with a single hand motion. "We're supposed to be having fun, right?"

Christmas had never been much of a thing for Jim before the Academy - his mom's work meant that sometimes she was there and sometimes she wasn't, and while there was always some kind of contact on Christmas day if she wasn't physically in the house there was no celebration. The Academy, and later the Enterprise, had been a chance for him to make up for lost time, in a way, to shower those who celebrated with gifts and festivities, and to find some other way to honor those who didn't.

Christmas in Pandora had looked to be a much smaller affair with only Bones accounted for out of his crew (and a sadder one, given Odi's deactivated presence), and while the knowledge that Tom had never even had a real Christmas had given Jim a mission, few things were as good a distraction as helping pull together a town-wide cookout.

In truth there wasn't much he did that went into the planning itself - Mary had done an excellent job of wrangling them all, and Jim had cheerfully helped move furniture around before retiring to his chosen place behind their makeshift bar. An unexpected warmth blossomed in his chest as she addressed them all; maybe it wasn't the same as having his crew, but when it came down to it Pandora wasn't all that bad. It made him hope Tom showed up, though Jim had tried not to be overly pushy about it. "And what are you going to wash that down with?" he chimed in, nodding in Ramma's direction at her offer. "The boss gets the first one."

It almost made Quirrel feel a bit guilty to participate in this event, seeing as it was a community function and he was not part of the community, but somehow he got the impression from the one who organized this whole thing that everyone was welcome. The bug probably would have passed out of respect for the fact that he was an outsider if it wasn't for the need to conserve his funds. Money was kind of important so a free meal wasn't going to be ignored. Not that he was doing this completely free, Quirrel had helped move a few things!

Looking around for where he should go for some food, the bug saw a familiar face among those who were giving edible items out. However, Quirrel had experienced Ranma's cooking in the past already, albeit a different and more simple dish. New experiences should be sought after!

The humanoid bug approached a stand that caught his eye due to the odd way the flames adjusted themselves. Nothing that couldn't be explained, but shifting sources of light always had drawn the attention of bugs. Lot of stuff on the grill, not so much off it. "Excuse me, are any of these close to done?" Quirrel asked the woman, Korra, that was manning the grill. Still acted like being a giant bug was completely normal.

The day for the Cascade Bay winter celebration was one of excitement and anticipation for Menolly. Of all of the parties she'd heard were going on, this one was closest to home and the most relaxed of all of them. While there wasn't that high a chance that she'd know anyone else there it didn't matter too much; she went back and forth to Cascade Bay a good deal with her little skiff and her job at the Schola and as a rule they tended to be relaxed, happy and friendly. Not a bad place to go for a party, all told.

That morning she'd sailed into the docks and secured the Winged White there, paying the dock master for the place before she disembarked. Considering that it was outside and she knew this place to generally be safe for her creatures she didn't hesitate to tell the ten fire lizards and her dog Pacer to come along. Winter was testy time for animals, and both her dear canine and the fire lizards could use the chance to play in the sun and sand. She'd worn simple clothes- trousers and a blouse, her hair held to the side in a braid, simple suede boots, her guitar over her back, and her usual satchel over her arm, full of the things she might need.

It wasn't a long walk to the beach where the party was taking place and she smiled and waved to Mary as she walked out onto the sand, Pacer the hound at her side. The fire lizards had taken to exploring the area, digging in the sand, and doing as they wished so long as it seemed safe. The smells coming from the grill were fantastic and she recognized a couple of the people there, and smiled as she started that way. "It looks like things are well underway. Does anyone need any help with anything?" she offered with a smile.

"Huh?" Korra looked up to see who was asking about the food, and was only momentarily surprised to find a giant bug with a hat and a pair of swords. If she wasn't used to spirits taking a variety of different unique shapes, he might have freak ed her out a little, but a bug was pretty tame compared to the genuinely dangerous creatures she'd handled. "Oh! Uh, hi! Yeah, I have a few things grilled already," Korra said, checking what was done. "You ever had scallops before? I can get you a skewer of them."

"Oh man, I get to choose? It all looks so good, though..."
Ah, the burdens of leadership. Mary frowned over Ranma's incredible topping selection for a moment or two, utterly and hopelessly torn. How the heck was anyone supposed to choose when everything looked as fantastic as this? Thankfully, Kirk the bartender saved the day - drinks were a little easier to choose from in this case.

"You got any lemonade, Jim? That'd be great if you do, my mouth feels as dry as a- oh, hi guys!"
Some guests were already coming up to the food stalls, and Mary beamed at them as she put on her "hostess manners." Time for food and drink later, first she had to make a good impression for the community.

The bug guy was definitely a new one; Mary wondered how different everything must be to him, and if he was having an easy time adapting to it all. She gave him an approving nod as he checked out Korra's stall.
"You're in safe hands there, buddy. All the cooks here are great, but you shouldn't miss out on Cascade Bay scallops when you get the chance to try some!"

Hmm. Maybe Ranma could put scallops on the okonomiyaki? It was worth asking, at the very l-
Wait. Wait. Were those lizards? Was that a dog?

"Oh my goooosh, who are these cuties? Hello, guys!"
The lizards mostly entertained themselves on the beach proper, but the dog was apparently absolutely thrilled to be greeted, and Mary spent a good few minutes throwing her hostess manners right out of the metaphorical window so she could pet him. After a moment, she realised that the dog's owner was talking to her, and stood up straight with a slightly embarrassed grin.
"Oh! Sorry, I... no, I think we're good, actually. At least, I'm good! Maybe some of our brilliant chefs or our fantastic bartender might need a hand, though? @Kiel, what about you, you good? You gotta try Kiel's fish, by the way, they're amazing!"

Kiel was just finishing up putting out his contributions to the party when guests started arriving. They weren't what most people would call average, but Kiel had no reason to treat them any differently. His smile stayed just as wide as he nodded in greeting to Quirrel, even as he went to another person's table.

Of course, Kiel hadn't volunteered so that he'd get recognition, he just wanted to make people happy. His sister always loved it when she could come home to a nicely cooked meal after a hard day's work of being a knight.

That thought was the first thing that caused Kiel's smile to wane. He looked down at the plates in front of him, pretending to be working on them to hide the frown. No one needed to be bothered by him when they just wanted some fun.

He was so busy trying to keep a smile going that he was only snapped out of it by @Mary Batson complimenting his work. That was enough to bring his smile back, albeit a shy one, along with a bright red blush.

"I'm great," he said, "but I'm sure my fish aren't that good." It was nice to hear, but he didn't need compliments.

Leah's introduction to Pandora wasn't the best. Being arrested for just trying to protect some innocent person wasn't her idea of fun, and the fact that being in jail meant that she was basically forced to be a human like she always wanted was a joyful little existential crisis.

But, once she got out and as far away from Pandora Town as possible, things seemed to be looking up. Being in Cascade Bay meant that she was able to actually find things to do that were useful, and let her keep her mind off of the kinds of things she was hoping to forget.

When she'd heard that people were looking for volunteers to set up a Christmas cookout, she decided to help out on a whim. Her strength meant that she could be useful at setting stuff up, and that was all she really needed.

She was tempted to simply leave once the party actually started so she wouldn't have to make awkward small talk with strangers, but once she was sure that the tent was going to stay standing, she realized that guests had already arrived before she could get some food.

And thus the dilemma was before her. Leave before getting any food, or risk having to talk to people who could potentially turn out to be assholes. No tables seemed completely free of people, but the food looked good enough that she decided to chance going to @Korra 's table, trying to discretely grab something to eat.

Picking up on the new animals nearby, Naga stopped ducking her head underwater to catch fish and shook herself off. She barked and walked over to where @Menolly was to greet Pacer, excited to meet another dog even if he was smaller.

"Yup! All the seafood around here's pretty good!" Korra said, agreeing with Mary. Even as preoccupied as she was with monitoring the grill's heat, Korra still noticed someone approaching her station. "You need something?" she asked Leah as she lowered the flames under the nearby boiling pot.

"Oh, that sounds nice," Quirrel said idly in response to the suggestion of scallops. The bug was currently thinking about a nice amount to take from every table so that he could try food from everyone without appearing gluttonous. "I was hoping for something light, so that should work."

Ah, the one who organized the whole thing was talking to him. Made sense that the type of person to organize a more personal event like this would be out in the middle of it. "Probably going to try something small from everyone regardless," he called out to Mary. "You've done a good job with this, it would be a shame not to make the most of it."

Having settled on what to get, Quirrel said "Well, a scallops skewer it is then, if you don't mind." As he waited for that, the bug noticed someone else by Korra's table. Made sense that with all the people milling about he would have other people in his vicinity.

"Hello," he offered Leah politely. Party small talk, something Quirrel had definitely never gotten the opportunity to practice. Even more so with a complete stranger. Better to just not attempt anything unless she seemed interested. This was ignoring the fact that he was a giant bug, which tended to provoke a reaction of some sort out of most people.

"Well crud, I knew I was forgetting somthin'." Smacking her forehead after hearing Kirk's question, the girl flashed a sheepish grin and then a sigh of relief that someone else got that covered. "Hey, at least more people will get drinks after they eat from other places."

Seeing that the boss was being pulled just about everywhere (and enjoying it), the martial artist smiled before setting aside a portion for later should the good superheroine still want it. Glancing up and seeing the rather familiar faces of both Korra and Quirrel, the pigtailed teen gave them an idle wave of a spatula in the span of time she had to flip the savory pancakes.

And not ten seconds into trying to get food, Leah was spotted. She managed to keep from looking like a deer caught in the headlights long enough to nod and respond. "Just looking for anything good really," she said, "not too picky."

She looked at the food on display, trying to pick something good, when a voice from her side greeted her. She bit back a sigh, managing to keep her face just clear enough that she didn't seem as annoyed as she was when she turned to look at...

Both of her eyebrows raised when she caught sight of the giant, talking bug also perusing the food on display. Not what she was expecting to see, she had to admit. There was a brief second where she tried to formulate some words.

Eventually, she managed to reply, "hi there. Do you live here? I don't think I've seen you around before." She wasn't normally the most curious type of person, but it was a giant bug, she had to find out what was going on.

"Well we have mostly seafood cooked right now, but we should have some other stuff done later if that's not your thing," Korra said to Leah, glancing at the pot still cooking next to her. That one had more beef and vegetables in it just in case people didn't want fish. Now that she thought about it, this woman kinda looked like she was from the Water Tribe too, though she assumed it was a coincidence. After Quirrel made his decision, Korra grabbed a stick and picked up a few of the finished scallops off the grill with it, then handed the stick to the bug man as requested. "Here you go!"

Over at another grill, she recognized the red haired girl as the one who'd been sparring on the beach a while ago and waved back.

For a moment the request for lemonade almost made him laugh - he was used to parties where everyone (or almost everyone) wanted something alcoholic - but then he remembered that Mary was a kid, regardless of whatever superpowers and organizational skills she possessed. "One lemonade, comin' right up," he called cheerfully, though he suspected her attention was already lost to newest arrivals.

In fairness, dogs were a pretty good reason to be distracted.

As were fire lizards, actually, and perhaps even moreso because of Abe's sudden interest in their arrival. The little blue had been comfortably settled on a rock nearby, having finished pouting over Jim's refusal to let him ride on his shoulders while he worked, but now he saw fit to take an interest in the proceedings, or at least in the other fire lizards. "Don't start any trouble," he warned the creature as he finished filling Mary's glass, receiving a vague sense of injury in response that made him laugh to himself.

Seeing as Mary was occupied the glass was hand-delivered to her, produced with a small flourish as he drew near. "Kiel's fish are the best, don't let his humble act fool you." He flashed a grin at Kiel, amused at his blushing in the way only someone who'd never experienced a shy moment in his life could be.
