    @Magnus Bane

Alec had never really done anything like this before. Normally, he’d ask Magnus, but considering he was doing it for Magnus, that was kind of not an option. There was Jace but – well. Jace was Jace. And he’d only just gotten here so he probably wouldn’t have been any help at all. So Alec was left to make phone calls on his own, trying to book a romantic holiday (well, three days was all he could get, given Magnus’ schedule and his). Most of the issue was just the fact that he had to keep changing the subject when Magnus walked into the room, which left the Inn owner not exactly fond of him.

But in the end he’d managed. He’d booked them a room, for two nights, looked into what all there was to do in this little village, and tried to make sure that Magnus kept those days free without being suspicious about it. He thought he’d mostly succeeded, though he couldn’t be sure.

    It was all set.

    He was excited.

He’d triple-checked everything, put up a list of things for Jace to know about Artemis (he was....pretty sure his parabatai wouldn’t end up caught on fire but – well, better safe than sorry).

Then had come the tricky part, which was getting Magnus to come with him after he’d badgered him to pack an overnight bag (“but for like three days”) and not let anything slip.

Again. Mostly successful, although the ride over to the train station in the clockwork bus had been – well, Alec had nearly crumbled at least four separate times.

But now, on the train heading steadily toward their destination, Alec relaxed, just a little.

He still refused to tell Magnus anything, but it was obvious he was excited.

Magnus wasn't sure what to expect from the weekend. He knew that they were going somewhere - that much couldn't be avoided, since he had to pack a bag of clothes and essentials for three days, according to Alec. A spontaneous vacation? But the secrecy around it all spoke to something more thought out than a spur-of-the-moment getaway. So what was it? What was Alec planning?

It wasn't a special holiday, Valentine's was several weeks away still and Christmas was solidly in the past. With nothing to go on he could only do as he was told, trying to get Alec to spill some detail by asking him questions and catching him off-guard, but despite his best efforts the Shadowhunter kept his lips sealed.

They were off of the bus and onto a train, and it seemed as if this was going to be the last leg of their trip. "You know, if you would just tell me where we were going, I could've just portalled us there," Magnus told him, not for the first time, as if this might be the moment he caved and told him where it was they were off to. Alec was practically bouncing in his seat with excitement and it was enough to bring a smile of endearment to the warlock's face. Whatever it was, he was certain that for Alec to be this excited, it was going to be well worth the secrets and anticipation.

“That would spoil the surprise,” Alec pointed out, once again. He alternated between staring at Magnus and staring out the window trying to see if he could see any village-y type scenery up ahead. He probably should have looked up how long this ride would be, but it was too late now. He didn’t want Magnus snooping on his phone or something. They’d not done anything for Magnus’ birthday and Alec felt awful about it, especially since Magnus had gone to great lengths to make Alec’s memorable.

Things had (mostly) settled down since then and while Izzy’s disappear was something he didn’t think he’d ever get over, he was able to focus on other things now. Like celebrating Magnus’ birthday with a nice, quiet stay in a village that was supposed to be ‘magical’ – at least, according to what he’d heard. It was the biggest thing Alec had ever planned (although that wasn’t saying much because Alec had never planned anything like this in his life) and he couldn’t wait to see how Magnus liked it.

Finally, after what seemed like too long, the train pulled up into the station and Alec burst into a grin, all but leaping out of his seat as he grabbed his and Magnus’ bags. “Come on,” he said, with a grin.

The distraction of the surprise was both a blessing and a curse. Only days ago had John come to him to admit to the addictions he was struggling with, and while he wasn't as if he was expected to be at his beck and call every minute of every day, the idea of leaving on a vacation while one of his friends was suffering like that (a suffering Magnus had been unable to find a simple solution to so far, or even a complex one, short of the detox that John was unwilling to endure) felt like a luxury he didn't deserve just then.

Of course, the promise John forced on him to not tell Alec of his problems forced Magnus' hand when it came to agreeing to the surprise trip, with no valid reason he could give not to go. He had promised John that he was just a phone call and a portal away should something arise, and made the other to swear he wouldn't hesitate to call if he needed him.

For now, Magnus did his best to get a view out of the window as they approached the train station, but besides the gently falling snow and some rooftops that were reminiscent of a small, old-fashioned village that didn't tell him much at all. Not much other than the fact that he didn't recognize where they were or where they were going, which was saying something, because Magnus had been to a great deal of the major locations around Pandora. Where was left that Alec could take him to that didn't feel even the slightest bit familiar to him?

It wasn't until the train pulled up to a stop and Alec, bags in hand, was practically dragging him eagerly off of the train that he was able to figure out where they were. The sign announced their arrival destination: Hogsmeade. He'd been meaning to get out here since he first heard someone at the Schola talking about it's existence - something pulled straight from a world he only knew through literature, but which was now very real and standing in front of him.

"It's even more impressive than I imagined," he said, slowing down to admire the initial view. He heard of things like this happening in Pandora before - people and places that were thought to be fiction in one world being reality in another, and while he didn't know why it continued to surprise him the fact that he was really standing there seemed almost unbelievable.

Alec was torn between the urge to surge forward and get off the train as quick as possible and hang back and watch Magnus take in their destination. In the end, he settled for getting off quickly and then letting Magnus move ahead, watching Magnus with a slightly anxious look, a hint of a smile clinging to the corner of his mouth. He couldn't wait to spend some time with Magnus - they both had pretty busy schedules and while he was overjoyed his parabatai was here, well, sharing the house with him meant that he didn't have as much time alone with Magnus as he wanted. And not even in like a have sex every night in front of the fireplace kind of alone time either.

Sometimes he just liked spending time with Magnus doing nothing important, with no one else around. Just the two of them, together, like they were in their own little bubble. He couldn't really remember the last time they'd had any significant amount of time like that - possibly his birthday?

    "You know it?"
Alec asked, curiously. He'd never heard of the place before in his life but that really wasn't much of a surprise considering how sheltered an upbringing he'd had. Obviously, Magnus hadn't been there if he was talking about how he'd imagined it, but Alec wasn't sure where Magnus had heard it from. Was it a mundane place? Alec was a little rusty with mundane locations - he could name just about any place relevant to Shadowhunters but ask him to name anything to do with mundanes and he just pulled a blank.

"I got us a room at an inn. It's supposed to be pretty nice," he said. "The Three Broomsticks." He wasn't really sure what kind of name that was, but it'd seemed nice from what he'd been able to glean by asking other people short of coming out here and seeing it for himself.

The fact that Alec hadn't heard of it... actually, no, it was far from surprising. In fact, of all the aspects of the Harry Potter universe that he could be familiar with, the little neighboring shoppes town was probably the last one he'd recognize. "It's from a book series that, as it would turn out, is a lot less fiction in some worlds than it is in ours," he said, still unable to keep a bit of wide-eyed awe out of his eyes as they lingered over the details of the entrance to the village.

Of course, the existence of a place like this wasn't entirely a surprise to Magnus, who encountered the same magic from this world during his time in both the Mages Guild as well as Merlin's school, but it was one thing to speak to people from that world, and another to feel like he was stepping into it.

He was brought out of his thoughts when Alec told him more about their weekend plans, and the fact that he got them a room at the Three Broomsticks for the next two nights. Magnus smiled. "That sounds perfect," he said, placing a small, quick kiss on Alec's cheek as they began to walk again. "But why the sudden getaway? Don't tell me you're tired of Jace already?" Not that he wanted to question a good thing - and perhaps there was no reason besides simply wanting to, which was more than enough for him. He just wanted to make sure he hadn't, somehow, managed to overlook an occasion that should be on his radar. It hadn't quite been a year since Alec arrived here, he was almost certain of that, but what other dates might matter in the times he had yet to reach in their own world?

"Oh..." Alec said, brows drawing slightly together. He'd never been much for mundane books anyway - though he'd often went through the Institute Library looking for anything he could find on things related to demons and the Shadowhunter world. "A good one?" he asked, hoping that the town wasn't filled with demons or building sized scorpions or something else unpleasant. Magnus didn't seem upset about it though, or like he wanted to turn around and get right back on the train though, so Alec doubted that.

He grinned as Magnus kissed his cheek, and if his hands hadn't been full with the bags, he would have grabbed for Magnus' hand. But then Magnus asked why he'd surprised him with a getaway and Alec could only stare for a moment. Had he forgotten the giant IOU he'd owed him after he'd completely failed to give Magnus as good a birthday as Magnus had given him? The corner of his mouth titled slightly upward though - he loved Jace, he did, but he didn't love sharing a house with him. Especially when it meant he couldn't do all the things he'd like to do with Magnus.

"Consider it a very late birthday present," he told him, with a slight smile. "I know I didn't....well." he frowned, looking a tiny bit distant for a moment. "I just wanted to do something with you," he explained.

"Oh yes, very popular." He wasn't going to go into the details of it - he would've been here all day trying to explain Harry Potter to someone who never even heard of it. Plus, he liked the idea of Alec experiencing Hogsmeade with zero preconceptions, just to take it as it was without knowing ahead of time what he expected from it. Not that it wasn't living up to each and every expectation Magnus had, to be fair.

His entire demeanor seemed to soften at Alec's explanation for the surprise, head tilting slightly into his shoulder as he looked over at him, a small half-smile pulling at the right side of his mouth. Of course he hadn't expected Alec to go out of his way to make up his birthday - it was nearly two months ago, and the pair of them had gone through a lot in those weeks, between Isabelle disappearing and Christmas and the new house. Honestly, he'd forgotten all about it.

"Thank you," he said, grateful for the thought if not surprised by it. "You didn't have to -- but you know I'll never turn down a chance to spend more time with you," he added, his smile growing just a bit. Living together, surprisingly enough, hadn't increased the amount of time they actually saw each other much at all. Between Magnus balancing two jobs, and Alec going on frequent patrols and also occasionally teaching at the school, getting a block of time like this where neither would have to run off to some other commitment or obligation was rare. It had to be planned, and Magnus was suddenly realizing why normal people worked so hard on setting aside times for vacations back home. It wasn't a life he was used to living, but he was starting to understand it.

"Are you sure you don't want help with those bags?" Magnus said, already attempting to reach out for his own though they were nearly at the Inn.

Alec smiled back, fondness written plainly over his face. He knew that Magnus wouldn't have been mad if he'd not done anything for his birthday - there had been a lot going on then and Magnus had been more than understanding. But Alec? There was no way Alec was going to let this occasion go by without doing something. He just had to hope that the Inn was as good as people said and that nothing went wrong.

The smile widened as Magnus continued and he came a little closer as he walked, so their shoulders could brush, just so he could touch him even though he couldn't hold his hand. "I've got them," Alec assured him with a grin, moving the bag out of Magnus' reach. Even if he hadn't had enhanced Shadowhunter strength, they weren't even that heavy and the Inn was now in sight.

When they got inside it was - it was actually pretty nice. It wasn't fancy, like the hotel, but it was cozy, and warm, and Alec immediately took a liking to it. It only took a couple minutes for them to get their room key and checked in, and before long Alec was standing in front of their door, waiting for Magnus to open it. "It's not as nice as the penthouse or anything," Alec said - they'd definitely been spoiled where they stayed at the hotel - "but everyone I talked to said the rooms were great."

Magnus just shook his head when Alec insisted that he finish carrying the bags the rest of the way, and it was only the fact that they were almost there that stopped Magnus from arguing with him and taking his bag anyway.

Once they got inside Magnus, once again, had to stop for a moment and allow himself to take in his surroundings properly. After all, it wasn't every day that the Warlock who was over 400 years old got to experience something so entirely new. This wasn't a feeling of fascination that he was allowed often, and in that aspect Pandora was a rare sort of gift to him. Not that he wouldn't go home if he could, but at least that small upside made things here a little more alright.

They got the key and made their way upstairs to where the rooms for lodging were, and Alec was already trying to downplay the place in comparison to the hotel. "I'm sure it's going to be just fine," he reassured him, putting the key in the lock and turning it, pushing open the door to see where they'd be staying for the next two nights.

And while Alec was right - it didn't have that 'expensive' or elaborate feel to it the way a more modern hotel would, it did fit the feel of the rest of the building very well. With everything made of wood from the floor to the walls, and candles for lighting where any electricity would've been in a modern building along with a fireplace already roaring in the corner awaiting their arrival, it was very warm and welcoming. Walking past the main room and into the bathroom to find there was a nice sized tub (which was always a plus in Magnus's book - nothing like a nice long soak to really relax).

"It's wonderful," he said, turning to go back into the main bedroom. "What do you think?" After all, from the sound of it Alec picked the location based on the recommendations of those already here, but hadn't seen it himself at all before now, either.

Alec followed Magnus inside, nearly holding his breath - he wasn't that hard to impress when it came to things like this, considering he'd really only been at the Institute for most of his life. There'd been no holidays abroad or anything until Magnus, and so they could have stayed just about anywhere and he would have been impressed. But this place? This place was amazing. He set the bags down inside, closing the door absently behind him as his eyes took in their surroundings. There was a large bed, candles where he'd have expected lightbulbs (he guessed that made sense though?) and a fire place roaring in the corner of the room.

His gaze trailed toward Magnus as he returned from his inspection of the bathroom, and then it wandered toward the large wooden beams that made up the room. It gave off a warm, cozy, inviting atmosphere and Alec was glad he'd decided to book them here instead of spending three days at the hotel (which was nice but would just remind Magnus about work - nobody would be able to steal Magnus away for work related things here).

"It's....." he said, still gazing distractedly around. "It's even better than everyone said," he replied with a smile. "There's some good shopping around, apparently, and the food is good, they said," he said, coming to stand next to him. "Whatever you want to do, it's your choice," he said, with a soft smile.

Alec seemed entirely infatuated with the place, hardly able to tear his eyes off of the details of the room long enough to wander over to where Magnus stood. That was enough to bring an even wider smile to Magnus's face as he leaned up a bit to fill the silence with a kiss and a considering 'Hmmm' noise against his boyfriends lips as he thought of what he might want to do first.

It was getting late, and as they left right after Magnus got down with some last-minute things he needed to finish up at both the hotel and the school before vanishing for the weekend, they hadn't ate before leaving to get here. He hadn't realized just how hungry he was until food was brought up, and now it was all he could do to stop his stomach from growling in answer for him. "Dinner, then a bit of exploring?" he suggested, never one to turn down the chance to try new food somewhere, an opportunity that wasn't often afforded to him at this point of his life. Honestly, it was just such an immediate relief to realize that for the next three days he had absolutely zero obligations that he didn't realize how heavily balancing everything around him lately had felt until he was away from it all.

Alec smiled into the kiss, having a hard time keeping his expression from being anything but stupidly soppy. He was excited that this had worked out - that the place was nice, that Magnus liked it, that he finally had some time, alone with his boyfriend for the first time in what felt like forever. No patrols, no work, no Jace or anyone else to distract them. He was even a little glad to be away from Artemis, if only because she liked to pop up at absurdly inopportune times.

"Sounds good to me," he said, pretty sure he hadn't really eaten anything since early this morning. He'd been so worried about getting all the last-minute details figured out that he hadn't really thought about it. Now he could feel hunger starting to gnaw away at his gut - at least they could just go right on downstairs and get some food. Although that was a little dangerous - Alec may be tempted never to leave the inn, which would be a waste if what he'd heard about how pretty the rest of the village was. He pressed another kiss to Magnus' lips, the hand that had idly migrated to his hip squeezing slightly.

"Ready?" he asked, not sure if Magnus wanted to change out of his 'traveling' clothes or if he was good to go right now.

Magnus knew better than to say something like 'whatever you want to do' at this point - if this was supposed to be his belated birthday weekend then there would be no passing that sort of indecision off, at least not without a fight from Alec. And arguing over who would pick what they did next didn't seem like a good use of what he was sure would feel like a very limited amount of vacation time as the hours passed by. The time spent together was never quite enough.

"I'm always ready," Magnus said, though they both knew that was a lie with how long it actually took him to get ready most days. Not that he was ever late - he had his usual routine down to an art form at this point, knowing exactly how long he needed to get ready. And what he wore for the day - his usual level of excessive as he hadn't known what to dress for at Alec's insistence that everything be a total surprise - would be more than sufficient for dinner.

He didn't bother to ask where they were getting dinner - they would either stop at the restaurant downstairs, which he knew served meals as well as drinks, or they would venture out into the town for food. At this point he was embracing the spontaneity of it all now that he was here.

Alec eyed him, a tiny smirk at the corner of his mouth. Magnus might be able to magic his make-up and all that but that didn't mean he was always ready. Luckily, they both did their own thing most days, so Alec didn't especially have to wait for him. "Let's go then," he said, leading Magnus out of the room, taking his hand once they were in the hall.

There were a few people in the dining portion of the inn, but there were plenty of seats left and they were shown quickly to a table. It was cozy - small enough that Alec could press his knees solidly against Magnus' - but not enough so that it was uncomfortable. The waitress was quick to get their drink orders - a nice, light wine for the both of them so that they'd be fairly clear headed for exploring and left them to look at the menu.

Of course, Alec found himself distracted instead by Magnus, watching him with a soft, fond smile over the table. "Did those...books mention what was good here?" he asked.

Magnus glanced over the menu at Alec's question, trying to remember if anything in particular was mentioned in the books. "I haven't read them in quite some time," he admitted. "I doubt any of the smaller details like that will come back to me, even now. Though this beef and lamb stew sounds delicious..." he mused, glancing over the titles of the entrees before looking back up at Alec.

Except instead of looking at his own menu, Alec was still just looking at Magnus, and the warlock returned his gaze with a sudden smile at the realization. "What?" He asked coyly, though he imagined he knew the answer. And yet, somehow, it always seemed to catch him off guard to find that Alec was so content to simply be there with him, no matter what they were doing or where they were. As if Magnus' very existence was something worth watching at every chance.

Honestly, Alec would gladly eat the first thing he saw on the menu - he was hardly a picky eater and he'd found that he did enjoy most things. Plus, it was so much better staring at Magnus than looking at the menu. The corner of his mouth tilted upward as Magnus looked up at him, and it widened into a fond grin as he gave a little shrug.

"Nothing," he said, shifting in his seat so he could press his knees more solidly against Magnus'. "Just....glad to be here with you," he said. He never could have imagined when he'd met Magnus that this is where he'd end up. Smiling at him with flushed cheeks from across a table, on a two-night holiday in a romantic little village. It made him feel all warm, and his fingers twitched with the urge to reach over and hold Magnus' hand - which he couldn't do, because Magnus was still holding his menu.

Magnus felt the extra pressure of Alec's knees pressing against his and smiled at both the touch and the words. In the warm lighting of the dining area (again, all candles and fires, giving a warm reddish hue to the wooden surroundings) he felt so relaxed that it wasn't until this moment, with little on his mind besides what to choose for dinner, that he realized how horribly strained he'd been the past few days. Without realizing it (or maybe he did realize it, though he didn't know the cause) Alec had gifted him with what he needed the most just then.

"And there's nowhere else I would rather be than here with you," he returned, matching Alec's fond expression (minus the blush. It took a lot to get Magnus to blush these days no matter what the situation). The waitress came over then, giving just the slightest knowing glance between them before asking if they were ready to order. "I believe I'm going to go with the stew," Magnus told her, flashing a much more casual smile her direction as he folded his menu back in half to hand back to her. "-and another glass of this." He added, picking up the wine with his now-free hand and taking an appreciative sip. He saw that it was busier during the dinner time here, and ordering another glass now would save him the wait later. It was always best to think ahead.

The smile on his face widened, and he wasn't sure what he would have said if the waitress hadn't come over - something helplessly soppy probably - and he was distracted by the fact that he'd forgotten to even look at the menu. "Oh," Alec said, glancing at the waitress and then to the menu he'd yet to open. "I'll um - I'll have the stew too," he decided, because it sounded good and he didn't feel like fumbling to look through the menu. "And just a water for me," he said as he handed his menu to her. The wine was good but he really didn't need another glass. One was his limit, two and his head started getting the bad kind of fuzzy and he didn't want Magnus having to portal him back to the room because he fell asleep somewhere while they were exploring.

He waited until the waitress had left to reach across the table and capture Magnus' hand, fingers tangling with his. There was a time when the gesture might have made him self-conscious, might have made him look around to make sure everyone else was preoccupied before he did it - but now? Now he didn't even hesitate. "I wish we could do this more often," he said, wistfully. The two of them led busy lives, and while he was happy here, with his life in Pandora, and it wasn't like they never saw each other, he would have been happy having more nights free to be with Magnus.

He allowed Alec to take his hand over the table with a smile, giving it a small squeeze. Magnus knew he was a little more preoccupied than usual lately, and that made him feel more guilty over the implications behind Alec's statement, knowing he was out of the house more than he had to be the past few days. But he couldn't look into John's particular condition while there was a chance Alec would show up and see what he was doing - he couldn't have Alec asking questions because he couldn't lie to Alec, not about this, but he'd promised to keep John's secret. So the best way to do that was to keep himself from being in any position where Alec might ask, and then he would not have to lie. It seemed a lot easier than it was, if he was being honest, and he didn't feel a lot better about it.

"Me too," he agreed. "What if we set aside a day?" He suggested, knowing the idea was going to sound horribly 'couple-y', but somehow not bothered at all by the implications of his increasing comfort with this domesticity he continued to embrace the longer he was with Alexander. "One night a week where you don't patrol, and I stubbornly refuse to step foot in the hotel, and we just spend time together. It doesn't have to be going out, or doing anything at all. But just a day we'll always know we'll have set aside for us?" It seemed almost silly in its simplicity. He stubbornly refused to call it a 'date night' even though that was exactly what he was proposing.

The pair of them stumbled into this life here in Pandora - one that Alec was living longer than Magnus, in a surprise turn of events - and their relationship adapted around their lives. Moving into the hotel, and then the house, the jobs they both held... they lived their lives and their relationship around all of those things instead of the other way around. It wouldn't hurt either of them to take a day to themselves, changing their schedules to fit their needs. It never seemed to be the same day for either of them when they allowed their schedules to happen at the dictation of others, but who would blame them for making a small request for the same day off every week? They deserved it.

Magnus suspected Merlin would have no issues with it, and he was his own boss at the hotel, so that wasn't a problem. But he wasn't sure how Alec would feel about breaking his nightly patrols.
