Midnight had come to pass and darkness prevailed. Rebekah had been haunting the past few weeks, yet, she had displayed extreme caution. There were no dead bodies for a trail which could lead to her, no witnesses. The only common thing between the missing individuals was the fact that they had expressed some short of interest in a government position or had opposed the supernaturals.

Her elongated fangs seemed buried in a man’s neck who had spread lies about magicians. His blood was running down her throat, every drop further strengthening her body. Although her eyes with the dark veins stayed shut, her senses caught someone approaching. Nevertheless, this person was far from a stranger. Moments later the rhythmical clinking against the concrete pavement ceased.

She pulled away from her food with a wicked grin serving as a sign of her triumph. It was a smug and arrogant smile, entirely different than the regular smirks she tended to use in her husband’s presence. A dark chuckle rose from the back of her throat, giving the impression that she began to enjoy the situation. “Light.” The name flew from her lips while she slowly turned to face him.

“You really should have stayed home like I suggested.” The soft voice sounded unusually cruel and deprived from the normal affection she displayed towards the young man. Although her partner had accepted her nature, the Original had always struggled against herself. Eventually, she had learn not to hide the more brutal side of herself. However, the current circumstances were quite unique.

Remaining covered thanks to the shadows which were provided by the tall buildings around them, her fingers never left the neck of her victim. Not that a human could outrun her if she wanted to recapture her prey. Looking deep into the stranger’s eyes she used compulsion, allowing him no room to disobey. “Don’t move. Don’t scream.” Rebekah finally returned her attention to Light.

Slow footsteps carried her closer, her high heels interrupting the silence of the alley. Eventually, the faint light from the street lamp revealed her features. Small streams of blood had already stained her mouth and the thick red liquid kept rolling down her chin in thin rivulets. The crimson hue splattered across her white shirt indicated her ferocious actions. “Of course you refused to listen.”

In actuality, the vampire had no doubt regarding Light’s ability to investigate and discover her secret or to discern a very specific pattern behind her deeds. “You found me.” Rebekah extended her hands to the side in surrender. “And now you have seen me.” Each word sounded like an accusation as she stopped in front of him. “Is it your curiosity satisfied? Be honest, little lamb...”

He knew that Rebekah had been made to step down from her position in the government. A similar thing had happened to him years ago, although he never held a Council position and recent events revealed why he had not considered it. There was little an individual could do inside a system that was broken and a failure to begin with and time and again those Council members that wanted to instill real change had experienced that. People had too many power within Pandora Town. Groups protesting for this and that, wealthy businessmen and cunning lawyers, all had engineered the same sort of society that he had in his world, albeit with more supernatural entities. In that kind, good politicians could not be allowed to make a difference. To be honest, Light was glad that Rebekah was only removed from office, instead of being killed for her views and ideas.

He also knew about the state that she called 'turning off her humanity' and giving in her impulses and instincts that came with being a vampire. Light believed Rebekah to be strong enough to hold on to what made her a person, but after her resignation she had changed. Sometimes she came late at night or was gone until morning. And then one day she didn't come at all and Light begun to worry.

She was strong and able to defend herself, having survived for centuries with being who she was, but he couldn't help but be nervous. The nature of the world was unpredictable and often liked to prove that however capable and prepared someone was, there were ways to be defeated. So Light found that he was just too restless to sit on the house and wait for Rebekah to come back and decided to seek her out on his own after he gave up waiting on her to return his phone calls and texts.

He didn't go in blind. He researched crimes related to vampire attacks, sightings and mysterious deaths and disappearances. And when he discovered a string of government employees and businessmen that expressed their willingness to run for a position in the Council, Light felt that he was finally making progress. From there, it was not hard to compile a list with possible targets and find his wife.

He did so on a night without a moon, where the streets were lighted through the dim, yellow lamp posts. He had seen a vampire feeding on someone many times before, but what really bothered him was Rebekah's attitude about it. Usually she fed on those that had given their consent and rarely out in the open. It was easy to notice that her victim was compelled and he frowned. 'What are you doing Rebekah? This is too dangerous. You risk exposing us both.' he said after she finished, firm and disapproving. She had the power to kill groups of Guards and vampire hunters if she had to, but not without making a name for herself and that was exactly what Light wanted to avoid.

Unfortunately, Rebekah would never be able to completely turn off her humanity due to her age. The distress and sadness had been heightened, becoming agony and desperation. Humanity was her greatest weakness owing to the constant effort to fight its way back into her soul. “Just… Let me figure this out.” She said mockingly while lowering her head and averting her gaze.

A sign escaped from her throat accompanied by a dark chuckle. Reaching up with both her hands, her fingertips brushed gently against her forehead in an endeavor to control herself. Despite pacing back and forth, she failed to suppress her emotions. “You are trying to make this about risking YOUR reputaion?” Fury burst from every fiber of her body as she pointed a finger at him.

Rebekah shook her head in a mixture of disbelief and confusion. The lingering threat of becoming a fugitive started to hover over her again but she failed to care. “Or is it about THEM?” She gestured towards the mortal behind her and the comment definitely sounded harsh. Her voice cracked, probably as a result of the disappointment she had been trying to suppress for weeks.

“The citizens... The innocent.” Her whole body began to tremble uncontrollably. “They are a mob! They falsely accused good people who had dedicated their lives in the creation of a better future. And you are focusing on the danger of exposure?!” A brief pause followed before she added. “They are just... Blood bags.” She could not let her affection for Light to stand in her way.

Loving without boundaries had devastated her countless times but she kept refusing to learn the lesson. When she had hoped for kindness, people had acted with irrational cruelty against the supernaturals. Obviously, the vampire was in agony and an immense amount of mental suffering. “And they deserve to be treated as such.” Pain shimmered within her bright blue eyes.

The current display of anger served as nothing more than a shield from the heartache and the nearly overwhelming desperation. The Original breathed in real slow, evidently struggling to regain some composure. Suddenly, a menacing smirk spread across her face and she gracefully walked back towards her pray. “They deprived us of our rights. They led us to an unjustifiable fight.”

She glanced at her husband before concentrating at the stranger. “Bang your head against the brick wall with as much force as you can master.” The familiar english accent tinged the command. The victim stared at her with pure fear claiming his features before finally complying and almost passed out. Frankly, the small demonstration of compulsion was a way to drive Light away.

At first Light was managing to hold back his own feelings and appear reasonable and collected. But as Rebekah went on, mocking and yelling, he was visibly taken aback and surprised by the way she was reacting and the words she was saying. It was obvious that she had been affected by the events that had happened and to an extent she had the right to, but she was acting unreasonably, speaking about things that could get them killed. His lips parted at the talk of blood bags and he looked at her with an expression of pure shock and anger. Was that what he was then?

And then she proceeded to lead the stranger to kill himself, which was not an unusual sight for Light, but it still bothered him not knowing anything about the man she had sentenced to die. Instead of leaving, he moved closer, his eyes burning with a fire that came from a place of logic, contrasting Rebekah's. 'Rebekah, think about what you are doing. We can't kill everyone.' he said, looking straight at her with determination, despite her frightening actions. 'If we make ourselves the enemies we will never rest again.' he added. They would be hunted by heros and the law alike. Instead of bettering the world , they would simply worsen their situation until they were imprisoned or killed.

And even if they managed to defeat all their new enemies, then they would be standing in a world of ashes and corpses. Light was certain that that was not what Rebekah wanted.
