He wasn't where he remembered having been.
He didn't know this place, and he was very certain this was not where he had been a moment ago.

The air smelled....warmer, lacking the cutting winds of the North, and where the solid stone ground of the temple had been was now grass and the distinctively familiar sensation of a forest's cover.
No, this was not where he had been a moment ago - and it wasn't outside that place either. It was someplace else.

The memory of Faye's silhouette was so fresh it stung - her voice so close to him, just a few steps and he would have been able to reach for her hand.
But now was not the time to grieve, not the time to allow himself to let his awareness slip.
Slowly, Kratos turned around himself, hand already having reached for the heavy axe on his back as he scanned his surroundings but recognized nothing familiar.
    He was alone.
There was no sound of human footsteps nor the short, familiar breaths of a running child.

    "Boy!"
His voice ran like thunder past the trees, causing birds to leave their resting places, startled.
    No answer.
    "Boy, come here!"
Louder yet, shaking the earth to his feet and making the wind tremble like a storm upcoming. The words echoed in far distance, sharp as ever.
    No answer.

The Spartan's grip tightened around the handle of his axe.
Worry closed itself like a rope around his throat, tightening until every breath was sharp and heavy. Memories surfaced from years long past, the smell of copper and blood dripping from his hands.
    "Atreus!"
This time there was a motion in his voice, a touch of something more impatient, more personal. A distant memory of pain and fear being shut out for the sake of focus.

    And still - no answer.

He was moving now. Not knowing where but knowing that if his son had been here, he's left tracks.
Skilled eye scanning the ground, the trees, the bushes. Looking for footprints and snapped branches on the ground, listening into the wilderness of this place in wait for the young boy's voice returning his call annoyed or too enthusiastic or bright and clear and curious.
But the forest gave him nothing, and Kratos' steps grew quicker - yet never louder, seeming much too quiet for his size - as he moved deeper into the woods.

It was too warm for the furs he was wearing but he didn't halt to take any of them off.
What made his steps slow was the scent of blood that made the air heavier around him suddenly, sneaking past the leaves and the warning silence. Not a single bird sang now, and Kratos soon came to discover why.

It was a stag - or....the remains of one, bones crushed, flesh torn to pieces violently. It was missing a leg. Something had attacked it. Something large, very recently because the blood was still flowing - and the animal was still breathing.

Quietly, the Spartan returned the axe to its rightful place upon his back. He crossed the distance to the animal and lowered himself onto one knee next to it; the stag's eyes were widened, shallow breaths making the fluttering heart beat faster in its dying tracks.
Soothingly he placed a hand upon the animal's long neck, feeling the sickly warmth radiating off it and the blood sticky and red clinging to the fur. The pulse beneath his fingertips was rapid yet the pause between each beat grew longer with the second.
Without a word, the man's free hand reached for his knife, keeping it out of the animal's sight right until the moment the blade skillfully and quickly slit the stag's throat.
Blood poured out, painting his pale hands red.
    The heart stilled.

Kratos wiped the knife's blade on his trousers and returned the weapon to his belt.
Whatever had attacked the stag - it had been large. And not human. He's never seen something like it before, and that only made it all the more urgent to find his son.
The concern took on a more solid form; the form of whatever creature was wandering these woods alongside his boy. Whatever creature might already have harmed his boy.
All because he hadn't been there to protect him. Because he's left Atreus alone. Again.

The sound of a snapping twig coming from behind him tore Kratos out of his fatherly worries.
In a swift motion he was up on his feet again, ready to reach for the axe if required. He couldn't tell yet whether it was a mortal or a creature far from human. And he forced himself not to hope that it could be his son.

A silhouette shifted between the darkness of the trees.
    It was moving towards him.....

The past few days had some major ups and downs. One of the ups was that Chise had Ruth with her once, the down was that Misty Hollow was in chaos and there was nothing she could do about it. Then there was the one thing Chise didn't know what to make of, that being the fact there was a copy of her not just around, but living with her.

The two of them were walking around the woods together at the copy's insistence. She was kinda pushy, a lot more confidence than Chise herself was, and due to all that, Chise felt a little jealous of her copy... herself.

She had been lost in thoughts for a while until she realized that it was oddly quiet and then once she looked around she saw why that was.

    Where did she go...?

    ------------------------------------

The doppelganger had seen some movement that got her curiosity, making her part ways with the real Chise to investigate, her absence not even going noticed by the other.

It turned out that the sight was a stag that looked wounded and the doppelganger followed it in hopes of being able to help it. Unfortunately, she ended up losing track of it among the trees which led to her wandering by herself for a while.

Until she stumbled upon a scene that got a gasp from her. The stag (was it the same one?) now lied dead after having suffered what she could only assume was a gruesome end, and next to it was a strong looking man with strange red marks on his body. He held a knife with him, making it clear that he had killed the wounded animal.

Worse yet, he had seen her. Not a moment coming into view, the doppelganger gasped and began stepping back, clearly nervous and afraid.

For a moment there was silence between the trees - but he could clearly make out a shape. It appeared human enough from where he was standing, but he had too many years behind his back to let mere appearance reassure him. Gods could also look human on occasion, as could undead creatures and everything in between.

    Crack
    Another twig broke.
Kratos stood where he was, watching the silhouette retreat into the woods, heavily aware that it was most likely the sight of him which was causing this retreat - he was not unfamiliar with that.
But it had been many years since he's last experienced it. Many years since people had feared him, known him, whispered about him like a local nightmare.

    "Show yourself."
Even though there was no direct threat in his words, his voice was more commanding than it would need to be, harsher than would be required - but old habits died hard.

And yet.... Kratos gave himself a mental push.
His son was nowhere to be found, and he had no idea what this place was; no matter how much he disliked the situation at hand - if there was the slightest chance that this stranger had seen Atreus, he couldn't let it go to waste.
    "I won't hurt you."
He added then, sounding a touch grumpy almost, but other than that his expression remained unreadable as always.

Somewhere in a distant corner of his mind the anger was scratching, knocking. Whispering that he had no time for such nonsense, urging him to make quick work of whoever this person was and go on his way.
But he had learned the hard way to keep his anger at bay, knowing it was rarely the solution it presented itself to be.

So instead he disciplined himself to patience, understanding that the sight this stranger had encountered could easily have led to a misunderstanding.
And he was willing to resolve this misunderstanding without a fight - if this stranger was, too.
Though he didn't let his guard down. He never did.

The man had said he wouldn't hurt her, yet Chise's doppelganger couldn't help but still feel nervous. Still, she knew that if she tried to run he might give chase and that could end badly, so maybe it was better to just show herself. As intimidating as the man looked, maybe he was just a hunter who had just caught his newest prey.

She stepped out from between the trees, hands raised and showing him her palms just to be absolutely sure he wouldn't think of her as threatening in any shape or form. She took a deep breath, hoping that she wouldn't find herself at the wrong end of that knife, although at least she could be glad that it was her in that situation instead of the real Chise.

"U-Um... Are you a hunter...?" She asked, her voice shaking a little as she glanced at the dead stag once again, the damage done to it was extensive to the point of being needlessly cruel, and looking back at the man, she could see that he carried an axe, which would definitely be capable of causing that much damage to a body, which made her gulp in her nervousness.

It took a moment - a moment in which he wondered whether the stranger would turn tail and run, and whether he would find it necessary to chase them down.
But that moment passed, and the stranger followed his order request to step out from within the darkness of the trees.

Kratos was glad they did because the moment the sunlight which fell through the high crows of the trees reached the stranger, he recognized that it was a child.
A girl, older than Atreus, but looking just as fragile, just as small and alone and lost.... and though none of it showed on his face, it caused a sting within the depths of his ribcage.

This strange girl was as small as his own daughter had been, even though she looked nothing alike.
The memory ached too much, it opened up this pit of self-hatred and shame, of the kind of grief only a parent could ever understand, and so Kratos locked it away and did what he always did: he closed his heart to it, following the same advice he himself had given Atreus.

The girl had her hands raised as if fearing she might appear threatening otherwise, and when she stepped closer yet, he realized she was smaller than his own son was - would probably hardly reach up to his waist, and something about that thought made the Spartan's stern expression soften just that bit, though one would have to look really close to notice.

    Are you a hunter?
Kratos didn't need to look back towards the stag to know that it was the dead animal she was referring to.
Either nobody had bothered to teach the girl how to hunt, or she was simply hoping for an unlikely truth.

    "No."
Was the short response he provided in - for him - very common manner.

A moment of silence stretched between them, but Kratos was waiting for something to follow the girl out of the shadows of the forest.
When that didn't happen, he took a look at the girl once more - the way she was standing there alone amongst all those trees which seemed to swallow her whole.
    "Where are your parents?"

It wouldn't have been all too unlikely for Atreus to be running around the woods alone - though even that Kratos preferred not to allow.
But unlike his son, this girl didn't look like someone who's been trained to survive in the wilderness. There was nothing about her stance that indicated a hunter's teachings nor did she carry any weapons that Kratos could see - a young witch, perhaps.
Or, much more likely, just a child who's gotten lost.
Lost in a place where something had violently slaughtered a stag less than an hour ago.

Well, he wasn't a hunter, that was all well and good, but then that left the matter of what exactly had torn that stag apart like that, unless he had done it himself for one reason or another, but she had a feeling that wasn't the case.

He began displaying some concern for her, not too unlike other people Chise had met before, at least, from as much as she could gather from the original's memory. There was just something about her that seemed to trigger that parental instinct in adults, even those who might not have had a child themselves. It would be something she would have laughed at if it wasn't for the fact she was still feeling a bit uncomfortable around this big, imposing man.

"Well... they're... not here." Her eyes shifted a little as she figured that going into much detail other than that would probably be unnecessary and just raise more worries. "I live at a brugh in a hill by these woods and I usually travel through here to get to the nearby town."

"Usually" was the keyword here, given what was going on with Misty Hollow. Even that aside, Chise went through the woods looking for materials or herbs and the like, but there wasn't much of a reason to go in-depth about her routine.

"My name's Chise. N-Nice to meet you."

    They're not here
These words could mean a variety of things, but Kratos didn't shy away from expecting the worst.
For a long moment he stared at the strange girl, trying to make out something in her eyes that might give away the fact that not here meant dead - not like he had the time to bother with such things.
    Eventually, he let her be.
It was of no matter whether her parents were in another town or in another world, whether they were dead or alive or somewhere in between.
They wouldn't come to pick her up anytime soon by the sound of it - and that was really all he needed to know.
Anything regarding the fact of why the girl lived in the woods, was currently irrelevant.

Adjusting the runed axe on his back, the Spartan turned towards the trees ahead.
He could hear the sound of rushing water in the distance - a river. If Atreus had been here, he would have walked towards the water. (At least if he had ever listened to his father's words.)
It was as good a place to start as any other, and refilling his water supply wouldn't harm either.
Besides, whatever had attacked the stag was not unlikely to return and reclaim its prey - he'd rather have the girl out of such a creature's way.

My name's Chise. Nice to meet you.
The words caused him to turn around and look towards the girl again; and while most socially-well-adjusted people might have returned the introduction with their own name and a handshake, Kratos simply gave a short nod and a hmpf sound of acknowledgement.
Then, he stepped over the carcass of the stag with one big step and headed towards the sounds of the river.

Or, at least for two more steps, before he paused once more.
Even if the girl was telling the truth and she was actually living here, there was no need to have her be forced to fight some monstrous creature and likely wind up dead.
Kratos pondered for a few silent seconds, but his decision was quickly made. This time he didn't even bother looking back over his shoulder towards Chise when saying:
    "Come."
As if there wasn't really anything else the girl could possibly do other than tag along with a stranger she's just met out in the middle of nowhere.

It was hard to get comfortable around this person when they acted in such an unapproachable way. Still, at least it was clear at this point that he wasn't going to hurt her, so Chise lowered her hand and stood in a more neutral stance as she watched the man's movement, wondering what he was going to do. He looked like he was about to just leave, but then he addressed her with just one word and almost made her jump at how sudden it was.

"Where are you going? It can be easy to get lost in these woods..." She warned him before he took any further action.

It wasn't uncommon for Chise to run into people in Silverwood, often people who didn't know where they were going or needed help of some sort, which she was always happy to provide. To be in this kind of situation now meant that the doppelganger was getting to experience some of that herself... except none of the people the real one had dealt with were so... unwelcoming, at least not to the point of making her uncomfortable.

How much easier would life be if people would actually just do what he told them to. But it seemed he was cursed with stubborn children - or blessed, really depended on one's point of view.
It can be easy to get lost in these woods
As if she was the one concerned for him. A laughable thought, and one that made little sense to the Spartan, seeing as the girl seemed to mistrust him (at least she wasn't stupid, apparently).

"To the water. Whatever did this-"
And with that he pointed towards the stag carcass on the ground.
    "- will likely return soon."
It seemed unnecessary to him to explain that this was clearly enough reason to keep moving forward, especially for a young girl as her. Surely, she couldn't be older than 12.
In the end it was up to her whether she'd tag along or stay behind - he wasn't responsible for her life, and he had better things to do than wasting his time watching after a random child. He had his own child to find.
However, there was a chance that she had at least understood that putting distance between herself and the stag would be a smart move to make - she'd be saver by his side than alone, but that was none of his business to decide over.

As long as she was still here, however.....
    "Where are these woods?"
There wasn't the slightest hint of fear or confusion in his voice, nothing that would have given away the fact that he was lost without any clue where exactly this place was, at all.
But at least, Kratos was not unfamiliar with parallel realms, and that was what he assumed this place to be - just that he'd never be able to guess just what kind of realm it was.

Chise could understand wanting to leave the area where there was the corpse of a mutilated stag, but she didn't really see the point of going to a place with water, unless this man was just really thirsty. Sadly, she had not brought a water bottle with her in this trip to the woods, so she couldn't even offer that.

To make matters worse, the way this man asked her about where he was gave her the impression that he was a new person to Pandora. The original often had to deal with newcomers too, so this was a double dose of experience for her to deal with, except... She really didn't know how well this person would take the news of being trapped in another world, cut-off from everything and everyone from his home. Still, she couldn't just lie about this.

"This is Silverwood, it's probably the biggest woods in this world, filled with a lot of different plants and animals and everything inbetween. There is a town near here called Misty Hollow, but it's currently in a bit of a dire situation, so I can't recommend going there."

She had worded herself in a way that would let him make it cleared to her whether he was really a newcomer or not. She didn't want to annoy him by explaining things he already knew, so she was playing it all safe. Plus, considering this man's stature, she didn't doubt he would be able to take care of himself in Misty Hollow even with the barrier down, but she thought it was better to give him a fair warning so he wouldn't wander in there blindly.

From Sparta to the cold North, he had his fair amount of travelling behind him, but that didn't mean he knew every place in the world(s). He didn't care about what wasn't his business, so his knowledge tended to be based in matters relevant to him, alongside the knowldge he's grown up with, of course.

Silverwood was not a name he's heard of before, neither was Misty Hollow, but the girl's answer struck him as evasive - never a good sign. Whatever this place really was, she seemed to assume he wouldn't like it.
Currently it was of no relevance whether he would like it or not though - not at all. Atreus had to be here, somewhere, and that was all that mattered.

    "Which realm are we in?"
There was not-very-subtle impatience in his voice, and the spark of anger beneath the demanding words - he wouldn't be taken for a fool, by nobody, in no place. And if this girl thought she could dance around the issue then she was mistaken.

It was merely for the sake of making this clear, that the Spartan turned to face the girl again, his stare seeming to withhold a certain fire that could burn one alive on the spot.
He had no intent to threaten the girl, even though it seemed that way at all - it was just the way he was, but of course that was hard to explain, especially since Kratos was generally not fond of doing much explaining.

And there was the confirmation she needed. He really was a new person to Pandora, which made Chise wonder how well he would take the information that he was in a completely different world. Although, the way he specifically asked her about a realm gave her the impression he had already been through something like this before. Still, it was better to not hide anything from him if she didn't want to make him upset, especially considering he was already glaring at her.

"This is a world called Pandora. Everyone here has been taken away from their homes and forced to live here. The reason behind it, nobody really knows, nor who is behind this."
She answered bluntly. Indeed, not even her, a creation of Pandora herself, knew any of that information. "Nobody seems able to find a way out of here either."

Nine realms, nine runes, some stupid key fueled by fairy light - Kratos was no stranger to bizarre tales and creations. He knew the world was much larger than human eye could see, and many things were hidden behind veils of godly manifestation.

This is a world called Pandora were words that settled in his bones first, before reaching his consciousness though.
He froze where he was stood, staring blankly at the girl for a few long, heavy seconds.
Pandora. He knew - had known - Pandora herself, and he had opened her box of evil. He had tried to save her, had cared about her.
It was no news that people re-used names of old tales, if in memory or in oblivious inspiration was open for debate, and this world was unlikely to truly be in any way connected to Pandora herself, or her box.
Yet, history left its marks as all knew, and for a moment, Kratos' memory stole away his attention. It had, after all, been many decades since he's last heard this name.

    "Pandora...."
It was a quiet mumble that came past his lips in a way that indicated he had spoken this name many times before, that he was familiar with it, held it dear.

The sudden sound of footsteps brought him back to reality.
A figure appeared from between the trees, running towards them - in fact it was a girl. A girl who looked exactly like Chise. Her twin-sister? Or perhaps something much darker was at play here?
Before he had a chance to say anything though, the girl-twin brought bad news......

The man seemed to be really affected by her words. Was he familiar with Pandora in any way? Nobody knew anything of it, at least as far as Chise had heard. Even her, as a creation of Pandora herself, didn’t really know anything about her origins in any way shape or form. It was a bit unsettling to think about, so she tried to not dwell on it too much.

Before they could go more in-depth about the topic, the sound of someone approaching caught their attention. That person turned out to be the real Chise who came running towards them, only stopping for a bit to catch her breath, panting heavily and frantically glancing between the two of them, as if she was trying to understand what was happening.

"There’s… There’s something coming this way…!" She took a deep breath and then ran over to the doppelganger, grabbing her hand. "We need to run!"

The sound of rustling grass was audible coming from the same direction as the real Chise and the noises coming from that direction only seemed to be getting louder and louder…

Bad news had a way of catching up with him - but Kratos rarely was upset about it. In a way, he was certain, he deserved all evil that came his way. It was only fair. He had to pay for all he's done, and all that came to harm him was perhaps merely fate grabbing him by the heels.

When the girl whom he still assumed to be Chise's twin sister, came to a halt next to them, out of breath and rambling something about a danger coming their way, Kratos' first instinct was not running - but it never was.
He's been raised a warrior - a Spartan warrior - he knew no fleeing, only battle.
And if there was someone to keep safe, he'd keep them safe. Make sure that whatever was around to cause harm, would not get the chance to do so for much longer.

"Hide. But don't run - it will follow."
The Spartan reached for his axe, the runes glowing up in an icey blue along the blade when his fingers tightened around the wooden handle of what had once been his wife's weapon.
He could hear the heavy sounds of something unknown coming closer, the ground shook with it, it was evident that the creature must be large.

    And he wasn't mistaken.

There was a roar, a smaller tree slowly tilting sideways several feet away, roots torn out of the earth easily. A creature stepped out of the trees - easily four times Kratos' height.
It had horns not unlike the trolls he's fought back in his own world, and the four arms had clawed hands. But fear didn't spark up in the demi-god. He's fought worse. Bigger. Stronger.
He had enough centuries behind him to know what the worst of monsters looked like.

With determination, skill, and a certain fury to the deep hazel of his eyes, Kratos stormed towards the creature, his axe raised above his head as he jumped off the mossy ground s few steps away from the creature, his weapon expertly finding its way into one of the monster's lower arms.
The blade dug into the flesh, making blood run in rivers, painting Kratos' own pale skin in deep shades of crimson as if it were but an extension to the lines of his tattoo.

In a roar of pain, the creature tried to pull its arm away, but the blade was stuck deep, and Kratos was holding on tight. When the monster swung its arm the Spartan was raised off the ground with the motion, making use of it by climbing his way towards the creature's shoulder, pulling the axe out once he had secure enough stance.

Kratos knew what he was doing, and the rage that burned beneath his skin would no longer control him. Never again.
He was the one in control, making use of his powers instead of letting them use him.
There had been a multitude of lessons he's learned in his centuries of a lifetime, and many of them he had learned much too late.

But he knew better now. He was a better warrior now than he's ever been.
And he would not let the girls get hurt.

The original Chise was at first a bit unsure, but soon she felt her twin grab her arm and pull her away, the two hiding behind some trees for safety. From their position, they watched as the creature showed up and the man began to fight it using nothing but an axe. It was hardly a pleasant show to watch, but it wasn't like the two of them could do much else without risking exposing themselves.

"We should help." The twin whispered, looking at the original with conviction.

"And how do we do that?" The original asked, looking at her twin with uncertainty, although it was clear that she shared the same desire.

"You can't fight back if you can't move." The twin smiled, raising up her wand so as to draw the original's attention. "As long as we share the burden..."

Chise looked at her own staff and then back at the twin, nodding. Together, they began chanting a spell in unison, still keeping their voices low. Suddenly, tree roots sprung from the ground and together, they made motions with their wand as if there was something tied to the end of it, They guided the path of the roots that then began enveloping the creature and making it harder for it to move. They were careful to not accidentally tie the man together with them though, as that would be... very counterproductive.

All they could do was hope that the monster wouldn't be able to break free too quickly.
