    and through the woods

This wasn't that weird, right? Toby was pretty damn sure that things like this were considered normal in many regards. Qrow had talked about his house once or twice before and she had managed to figure out where it was. She was terrible at reading maps that didn't have street names and terrible at judging distance when it wasn't in a city. Without her car and only with her legs, she didn't realize how far things could be. Like say a house in the middle of no-where between Pandora Town and Cascade Bay.

Really she just wanted to visit her boyfriend. Qrow had been the one stopping by instead of the other way around and she kind of wanted to return the favor a touch. Maybe she just wanted to make him smile. He had a nice smile when he was caught a little off guard. So the brunette had left Pandora Town in the early evening, figuring it would take her a bit to get there. She was also kind of hoping she'd be able to spend the night but that was mostly because she was visiting her boyfriend. Even if all they did was pass out on the couch while watching who knew what on tv, that was good enough for her. More than good enough.

Except Toby hadn't really figured on how far the house was. Just like when she had gone hiking with Qrow out into the woods, she hadn't been prepared. She may have gotten lost a time or two. May have stumbled down a hill at one point because her sneakers slipped on some dewy grass that just so happened to be placed in just the right spot. She may have also had a few branches slap her in the face. Generally Toby was not comfortable in any setting but a city but she was making an effort. An effort she regretted after a good amount of time had passed.

The sun had not yet set by the time that Toby laid eyes on Qrow's goddamn house but it wasn't far off from sinking completely out of view either. She was cranky and exhausted. There might have been some new scuffs on her shoes and there was a twig hanging out the back of her leather jacket. Some leaves were clinging to one of her cuffs were she had stumbled through a bush. "Why the fuck would anyone live out here." It was mostly grumbling. Mostly. Toby felt like she had a right to bitch after what she had gone through to make Qrow smile but she took a breath to calm herself and then knocked on the front door. Quickly patting down her jacket and trying to shake off the leaves before he answered the door. The point of this surprise was not telling Qrow she was coming over, so she wouldn't have known that Qrow wasn't home and his roomie was. Toby had in fact forgotten that the huntsman even had a roommate. One of those little details that didn't seem to matter much at the time but would have been important now. Instead she was sort of half smiling like a dork as the door opened, ready to see that smile on Qrow's face.

Things were just more of the same so far. Qrow was off doing who knows what outside, probably his typical hero stuff or just finding some kind of trouble for himself. Sans, meanwhile, was just lazing around like always. He was lying down on his bed and messing with his phone while his skeledog was poking around, as usual.

When he heard a sudden knock on the door, he figured it wasn't Qrow. Who would visit a house like that though? It was a bit of a trek so for someone to go looking for this house, in particular, it must have been someone who knew him, probably a friend. Sans had a feeling an enemy wouldn't bother knocking at the door unless they were unusually polite.

Sans walked downstairs at his usual slow pace and began unlocking the door. Then, when he opened it he saw a woman with a dopey expression on her face that could only suggest one thing. Clearly, he wasn't the person she was expecting to open that door and by virtue of that alone, he had to hold back some laughter.

"you must be the girlfriend. hey girlfriend. qrow's not here right now." He informed him with his usual grin and laidback attitude.

The door swung open and Toby felt this little tingle of anticipation. Surprising Qrow was probably going to be a good thing, at least out of context of her abilities and crazy choices in the middle of a fight, and she was sort of excited to be the one to get the drop on him for once. Except when the door swung open the dark haired man wasn't standing there. In fact there was no one at her eye level at all.

Instead the brunette had to look down, spotting a... skeleton??? She took a moment to take that in. She had met a lot of different people and a lot of different creatures, even before Pandora, but she had never seen a walking skeleton in a hoodie. Not that it was a big deal, really there were some weird ass things in faerie that Pandora couldn't hold a candle to, but was he wearing a hoodie? Sneakers. Hoodie. Shorts. Looking almost exactly like one of the teenagers that had always been rolling into and out of her house back in San Francisco.

You must be the girlfriend. Who somehow knew who she was? But sort of as the girlfriend instead of her name? Of course that's when it clicked that Qrow had a roomie. He had said something once or twice before, but she had forgotten on the way over. "And you must be the roommate. Hi Roomie." There had been a little bit of a smile at that but her smile might have dropped a touch when the roomie mentioned that Qrow wasn't there. Of course he wasn't there. That was just her kind of luck.

There was a backwards glance at the trail she had attempted to blaze from Pandora Town to Qrow's house. The walk home wasn't exactly going to be fun in any sense of the word. Her head swiveled back to the skeleton, one eyebrow lifting slightly as she hoped for a better answer to her next question. "Is he... going to be home soon? Possibly?" Toby didn't want to come all this way for nothing. If he'd be home soon then maybe she could surprise him then or... well, some of the air beneath her wings had stopped pushing her forward at this point. Less excitement and more acceptance at the hand that fate had given her. She shoved her hands into her leather jacket pockets and just sort of stood there. This felt way more awkward than it should have. Like she was asking if Qrow could come out to play.

The change in her expression was expected, seeing as she probably wasn't expecting to meet with a skeleton at her boyfriend's house. After all, people's skeletons were usually in their closets, or at least that was how the saying went. From the looks of it, Qrow had never told her that he had a skeleton living in his house with him, probably not out of any embarrassment so much as he didn't mention that particular detail.

She did know he had a roommate though, so Qrow had likely just left it at that. She answered him in kind and Sans could appreciate a little sense of humor. At least that confirmed that they were both out of the "s/he's not my boyfriend" phase.

"no clue. even if he had given me a time, he probably would arrive late anyway so i guess there's not much of a point in doing that." Sans shrugged. "if you wanna wait for him, you might be here for a while."

Sans then opened the door further and stepped a little to the side, quietly inviting Toby to come in if she felt like it, or she could just go home and complain to her boyfriend about it via text later, one of the two. Given the look on her face at that moment, Sans could tell that she really wasn't looking forward to walking all the way back.

Toby knew what the roomie was going to say even before he said it. Qrow wasn't the type of guy to tell people where he was going or when he was likely going to be back or anything of that nature. Instead he just sort of did as he pleased. Which was exactly what he should have been doing it just made it hard for Toby to predict things in order to surprise him. Maybe that was something to tuck away for later.

They had managed to get out of the first stage of denial, to dating, but the rest of it was staying firmly in the shadows. Arriving late could mean a number of things for people who slept at night. Toby was nocturnal and she would be up all night anyways since she had only woken up an hour or so before heading out. Long enough to eat a bowl of cereal, run through a quick shower, and get dressed. Or rather slogging through it all because Toby had trouble waking up until she had at least two cups of coffee.

Still the roomie was opening the door and inviting her in. Maybe Qrow would show up soonish. She could hang out for a bit until she was ready to trek through the woods again to drag herself home. Toby gave a bit of a shrug and walked in, taking a careful look around as she did so. There was a bit of a smile in that factor because this was a glimpse at something she hadn't seen before. Painting a little bit more of a picture really. Qrow had already been in her apartment, both bedrooms, hung out on her couch, seen her office... and this was the first time she was seeing his place. Though she had seen his classroom first, or that workshop, whatever that had been.

"I'm Toby." Once she was inside Toby held out her hand to the skeleton, not fussed by shaking his hand. Not even thinking about how it might be weird or odd to anyone else. It was only decently polite to introduce yourself to your boyfriend's roomie. Doubly so when he had invited you inside the place.

Given who she was, Toby was probably already expecting that kind of response and it showed. She must've just wanted to cover her bases, or maybe she just had that slight hope that for once Qrow was trying to stick to some kind of schedule. Unfortunately for her, that wasn't the case. At least she didn't seem to mind it too much.

"yeah, i know. you actually share a name with my dog." Sans informed her before looking towards and raising his voice ever so slightly. "hey, toby!" he called out

It didn't take long before the sound of rattling bones came from upstairs as the tiny skeleton dog hurried downstairs so quickly that he tripped on the first step and landed on his face. Yep, that was his Toby alright. It didn't even seem to faze him in the slightest as he got back up in an instant and he ran over to Sans and the other Toby, panting and looking at the new person with curiosity.

"anyways, did you come here without telling qrow? doesn't seem like him to leave someone hanging like that for no reason." He asked as if nothing at all had happened in the past few seconds.

Hey, Toby! She turned slightly to see a tiny skeleton dog run down the stairs. A skeleton dog that had the same name as her. She stared at the dog and then back at the roommate, slowly coming to the realization of how goddamn weird all of this was. It took her a moment, wheels turning in her head before she took the plunge and looked back at the skeleton who hadn't introduced himself in return.

"Call me October." Toby wasn't a fan of her full name but she was not going to want anyone to call her Toby with that dog around. Qrow could use Tobe. That was his nickname for her which meant it wasn't natural for anyone else to use it. So October was just going to have to do for the roomie. She didn't want... anything else at the moment.

"Uh, no. He didn't know I was coming." Qrow would have been here if she had told him. Hell, he probably would have met her at her place and then helped her get here. Quicker, without so many slips, and walking like a graceful mother fucker the entire way while she stumbled into trees. This was supposed to be a surprise. She pulled out her phone and looked down at it, debating sending Qrow a text to ask him where he was. But if there was still a chance to surprise him, then she'd wait a bit longer.

"I've got a rose goblin who's about the same size. Maybe a bit bigger." Toby nodded at Toby, trying to come up with some sort of conversation as they stood there. Awkwardly. All of this awkward and Toby knew it. Where the fuck was Qrow?

October, huh? So Toby was meant to be an abbreviation of that? Sans could understand it, but he still had to wonder why anyone would name their kid that. Not a name that suited a girl very well, at least in his opinion.

Either way, apparently she was there to pay Qrow a surprise visit, probably just a nice little gesture to make to her boyfriend, except it all got ruined by the fact he wasn’t there when she arrived. Plus, Sans was there which would inherently make things a little less romantic than they could be, not that the skeleton had any intentions of ruining their moment. If there was anyone who needed something nice to happen to him, it was Qrow.

    "a what?"
Sans asked, never having heard of anything like a rose goblin before and having no idea of how to even picture such a thing. He didn’t linger on it for long though and shook his head. “anyway, it might take a while before qrow shows up, so you want anything to eat? you look like you’ve been walking around the woods for a while.”

If Qrow wasn't going to show up for awhile, Toby didn't know what she was going to do. The changeling still wanted this to be a surprise for Qrow because she had put a decent amount of effort into actually showing up. Trekking through the woods and showing up unannounced, it was supposed to be... fuck if Toby knew. Cute? Maybe cute. She didn't often think of herself as "cute" but maybe she kind of hoped that she was a little bit. At least to Qrow.

Fuck. Now she had all these weird mixed emotions about this and Toby didn't know if she was going to text her boyfriend or wait it out. Thankfully his roomie seemed to understand and went about doing the social, expected thing. Asking her if she wanted anything. "Coffee?" Sans had said to eat but October was more of a coffee fiend than anything else. She drank several pots of the stuff per day and one could easily argue that she had just as much coffee running through her system as blood.

Qrow didn't have a coffee pot though. Toby didn't understand the level of bachelor that the huntsman and his roomie had achieved out in the woods. Never mind her own stark apartment, every kitchen had to have a coffee pot right? Everyone drank coffee, right? Qrow had even drank coffee with her more than a handful of times because she had offered it to him at her office and at her apartment. A real sign of love there, sharing her coffee, so she didn't even think for a minute that the two dudes living out in the forest wouldn't have such a basic item in their kitchen. Instead she was a little hopeful because a little bit of coffee could really help her relax.

"man, what's with you people and coffee?" Sans commented in an amused tone, he knew that humans their coffee a lot, as he had gone to many a cafe in Pandora Town and seen a lot of people drinking a bunch of it, he couldn't help but think it was some sort of addiction. "lemme see if there's any of it still left..."

Sans then headed towards the kitchen, trying to remember where Qrow would leave the coffee, if there even was any. Meanwhile, Toby the skeledog was still there with Toby the person, just looking at her and wagging his tail, managing an impressive puppy-dog eyes for something that didn't even have proper eyes to begin with, pretty much begging for some petting.

Toby was worse than a lot of other people when it came to coffee. She could down several pots a day and she had become addicted to it over twenty years prior. Back when she had been trying to live as a human. Which wasn't to say she didn't still drink as much but she was often able to sleep during the day, so the changeling might have eased back a touch since then. Of course when Sans and Toby went to the kitchen, there was no coffee to be found. Qrow didn't even own a coffee pot, which was a sin in Toby's opinion and she was certainly going to let her boyfriend know that.

Still Sans' dog with her name was staring up at her, little tail wagging, and Toby stared down at the creature. Normally she didn't have any problem petting animals or pets. She certainly gave Juliet scratches behind her ears often enough when the hellhound was around but this was a little weird. First, because the dog was actually a skeleton and how did you properly pet a skeleton? But secondly, and more importantly, the dog had her name. That made it weird more than anything else and Toby wasn't sure she was ready to touch the skele-dog that shared her name.

Wasn't the dog's fault though, so the changeling offered a little bit of a tense smile and patted the thing on the head carefully, figuring that would have to be good enough for the moment. But after discovering the fact that Qrow did not have any coffee and only seemed to have booze or Gatorade stocked in his kitchen, Toby snagged one of the "sports drinks" and went to plop herself on Qrow's couch. It was bigger than her own and a lot more comfortable but that was a given considering the huntsman lived in a house and not just a run down apartment in Blackhaven.

For a little bit, Toby wondered if she should text Qrow or not. Letting him know she was here. Telling him that he was an abomination for not at least owning a coffee pot. They had been together for almost three weeks at this point and he had invited her over several times. He should have known better. One eyebrow lifted in amusement as they flicked the tv on and settled in, figuring it was best just to relax so she could still surprise Qrow. "How long have you been living here?" Toby had no clue who Sans was or what his story was either. But the changeling was more than willing to have some small talk while she killed time. Qrow had to show up sooner or later.

    ~Did I break this broken home?~
    ~Can I get a sign? Some peace of mind?~

Qrow was in no rush to get home, knowing Sans wasn't counting on him to be back at a certain time (or at all) and that he definitely did not have a curfew-- as much as the government of Pandora Town wanted to play parent to any and every grown ass person under their literal Watch. Qrow was glad that he had taken up residence at his own property outside of their jurisdiction-- so he wouldn't be ordered to put his lights out or keep down the noise of his welding and music, nor be tucked into bed like a baby.

Clearly, there were times where he really hated authority. Maybe tonight was an especially bitter night because he had finally reached his favorite Chinese restaurant just after they'd locked their doors for closing time, and then had to track down another location that was open until the curfew, haggle with them for a decent price, and then evade the Pandora Town Watch so he didn't go to jail again for staying up past his bedtime and helping circulate the economy.

He did pay for that food, and he did conclude his business before the witching hour, and he wouldn't have been a 'nuisance' at 9:01 pm if it weren't for the officers yelling at him and chasing him with butterfly nets right on the hour. It was an extra shitty night that didn't need to be shitty, but that was just how his luck worked, even with his semblance tamed.

Regardless, he made it home without losing any precious primary feathers and landed on his human heels in front of his door, sighing to himself and adjusting the bags of take-out in his arms to allow himself inside. His sour mood was entirely wiped clean as he saw Toby and Sans on the couch watching a comedy show, and he stopped in his entryway to gawk at the scene. "Oh. Hey." A grin soon formed on his face as he continued walking into his house to deposit the bags on the kitchen bar counter, hardly taking his elated eyes off Toby. "What are you doing here, Tobe?" Had she walked here? Qrow tried to quell his grin as he slid his hands in his pockets and then meandered over to the edge of the living room, glancing at the television, then Sans. "I see you've met funny bones. And he's got you hooked on his silly stand-up show, no doubt."

He smiled at Toby before remembering, and then gesturing back at the kitchen which was quickly filling up with a warm scent of steaming noddles, veggies, rice, and chicken. "You guys hungry? I brought extra."

    ~Just look at what you've done.~
~But don't you dare forget the sun, love.~

"since, uh, may i think. qrow let me stay here so i didn't have to live in the wild." Sans shrugged.

From there on, they just kept the small talk going on while watching shows on TV. It was nice to get to know Qrow's girlfriend after hearing about her a few times and even having to reassure Qrow that he could actually be a good boyfriend for someone. That was something he wasn't prepared for but hey, it worked out well in the end, if the relationship he was hearing about was any indication.

Qrow eventually did arrive, carrying some food with him as he did, because he had no idea how to cook something and Sans was too lazy to actually prepare something, or reveal he could cook, to begin with. Of course, the dude's eyes were entirely focused on his girlfriend as he made his way in, only look at the skeleton when the topic shifted to him.

"hey qrow, your girlfriend wants coffee." Sans joked, figuring it was a good way to get things going. "and yeah, sure, i might grab a bite. my stomach's rumbling right now." he added, with his ever-present goofy grin plastered on his face, patting his non-existent belly, though in doing he revealed that there was actually something under his shirt.

The front door opened and Toby refused to look up. At this point it was about her pride and not seeming over eager. After all the brunette had already hiked out here, which meant she had already put in plenty of effort to see Qrow, and that was more than enough eagerness for the moment. But it was hard for her not to smirk slightly as he stopped to stare. Toby took a breath and finally looked up as she was addressed, even as Sans piped in with a statement that she wanted coffee. Which was the truth, no joke, but that was always the case here.

"Not having a coffee pot is a sin, Qrow." She knew that Qrow would already understand why but he would have known how much his girlfriend loved coffee from before they were even dating. He had already seen how much she could chug down. Toby glanced over at the skeleton and smirked slightly. "Food might help though." She stood up and moved towards the food, patting Qrow on the arm as she passed him. He was a sinner, he didn't deserve more for a little bit. Inviting her over all the time all the way out here without a coffee pot?

"You're the second person I've met who said something like that, Roomie. A lot of people live out in the woods?" Tom had been the first one and Toby had done for Tom what Qrow had done for Sans. Invited him into her home. Done what she could to help until she couldn't any more. But that was the past and it didn't really matter now. People living out in the middle of no where without even a roof over their heads? Well, that seemed a little off to her when there were places like the shelter rolling around. But she had never been good at wilderness things.

Toby moved into the kitchen and did what Qrow always did, made herself at home. Started opening up cupboards to figure out where the plates and things were.

    ~Did I break this broken home?~
    ~Can I get a sign? Some peace of mind?~

The cleanest appliance in the cabin was undoubtedly the stove and oven, contrary to one might think of a conventional house. Yang cooked when she visited here and there, but the boys never touched the damn thing. Qrow thrived on whatever food that could be purchased ready to eat, and Sans hadn't starved to bones during his time living there. Qrow was pretty sure he didn't need to eat at all. Or... how he even could, but he tried not to think too hard about how a skeleton's digestive track worked.

Sans addressed Toby by her title and not her name, which caused a small smile of embarrassed pride to form on Qrow's mug. His girlfriend. He looked back into the kitchen with a glimmer of fear, realizing that he indeed did not have an coffee maker. He never thought he'd need one, as his more favorable choice of counter top appliances were a blender and drink mixer to 'brew' his more favorable choice of drink-- spirits. Regret and guilt for not thinking ahead and being considerate rose within him.

Toby didn't really look at or answer him, and he worried that she was upset at him. He wouldn't blame Her. he didn't have a coffee maker, damn him. At least, he supposed that was what she was irked about, though he stayed on alert in case it was something else that he'd been blind to. Perhaps the fact that he wasn't home to meet her arrival? After she'd trekked all this way. "Not having a coffee pot is a sin, Qrow."

Qrow touched her back as she passed him and patted his arm, giving him a reassurance that she wasn't angry? His hand remained on her for as long as it possibly could as she moved past, even taking a step over to bide more time in an effort to give her reason to pause and believe him when he joked, "My sincerest apologies." with a small and clearly superficial smile that hid his compassionate apology for the lack of coffee pot, or his tardiness, or whatever else perturbed her.

He kept his small smile as she moved through his kitchen with full confidence in her exploration. "The woods aren't so bad, once you get used to them, you know." He smirked to interject into their discussion, moving around the counter to begin taking out the trays from the plastic bags, reaching back only once to gesture toward the silverware drawer as a noninvasive way to aid Toby in her independent search.

In a few short moments, he'd separated out a plate for himself and a plate for his 'Roomie.' The huntsman hovered in the kitchen for Toby to finish dishing her own plate and then led the way back to the living room, handing Sans his plate before taking a covertly deliberate seat in the center of the couch between the two.

"not that i know of. i was kinda forced into hiding." Sans shrugged with indifference.

There was a very obvious change in Qrow's behavior when he was around his girlfriend and Sans had to find it hilarious. He was just so much more timid now like he was trying really hard to be the best boyfriend possible, silently freaking out over the lack of a coffee pot in the house even though the girl clearly didn't mean anything with it.

Qrow seemed distracted enough by Toby's presence in the house that he seemed to forget the fact Sans was clearly joking and prepared food that he obviously wouldn't be able to eat. So instead, Sans just kept his plate on his lap and waited to see how long it would take for Qrow to realize his mistake.

"you must be really somethin' else if you can turn this guy into a timid ball of anxiety, girlfriend." He joked, leaning forward a little to look past Qrow and at Toby. "usually he's lacking the 'timid' part." He added

    and through the woods

    June 20th, Year 7

Toby was ribbing Qrow for a bit of fun but the only reason there was any seriousness to the situation was because Qrow had seen his girlfriend without coffee. She was a cranky beast and barely could handle basic communication without it. This would have been more of a joke than anything else if the man had lived near by a cafe or a coffee shop of some sort, but instead he lived out in the middle of no where and that was not an easy problem to solve. It was fine, she'd manage all the same, but if he didn't get a coffee pot before she visited a second time then Toby would think that he didn't want her over at all. It would be like Toby not having a bottle of something for Qrow to drink when he came over and well, she lived within a five minute walking distance to two liquor stores so it wasn't the same.

She managed to find most things in the kitchen pretty easily, picking up the silverware the moment that Qrow made a gesture, and then set everything on the table in a manner that suggested she had done this a few times before. Toby also lived on take out, in Pandora, but once upon a time she had had a home or two and had set a dinner table a few times. Even if there had been crayons scattered around with coloring sheets to keep Gilly from throwing her carrots at her dad. Fond memories, but extremely bitter sweet for the changeling.

I was kinda forced into hiding. Toby stopped for a second, eyes sweeping over Sans again as she tried to figure out what that was supposed to mean. She didn't say anything and was quickly going back to settling in for food, deciding to ignore it. There were plenty of reasons why someone would be forced into hiding and she knew that from personal experience. She also trusted Qrow's judgement of others and figured he wouldn't let just anyone be his roomie. So there was a decent amount of trust there coupled with Toby's ability not to pry into personal matters as she sat down and skipped straight to the joke Sans cracked instead of anything else.

"Timid is not a word I'd describe for him." Ever. At all. When had-- well, no there had been a time where Toby could have used that word for Qrow. When he was struggling with the idea of a relationship between them or whatever it might have been at the time. Reserved or cold might have been a better word, because he still hadn't been timid in other aspects, but there had been a time where she could use it. "I'm just a monster when I haven't had coffee and I typically can't communicate well with others until I've had a second cup." And she went through about four pots a day on average, not that either of them would know that. Maybe. She wasn't sure how much attention Qrow paid to her coffee in general.

Still she didn't feel like teasing Qrow too hard if Sans was already on top of that, so the brunette helped herself to food and pulled the plate towards her, not understanding that the skeleton couldn't eat. She had seen weirder things in Pandora. "I'll reserve judgement on the woods. I really hate hiking." There was a little bit of a snort at that because she was under selling how much she hated hiking but that was about all she was going to say on the subject. If her boyfriend lived in the woods, he lived in the woods. He'd just need to get a coffee pot if he wanted to tempt her over again. That or get her coffee in the mornings she did stay over. Which she could easily make worth his while but... Sans was in the room, so any and all jokes on that end were not going to be said.

    ~Did I break this broken home?~
    ~Can I get a sign? Some peace of mind?~

Qrow was different around Toby, though he may not have noticed that fact as clearly as Sans had. Toby's presence made him more aware of himself, made him think through what he did and said, but not in a bad way. He was more considerate around her, and more mindful of his potential mistakes. He didn't want to do or say anything to disappoint her, turn her off, or scare her away. With that distracted state of mind, the huntsman had indeed failed to recognize the skeleton's joke about partaking in the dinner, and performed a double take on Sans plate before briefly closing his eyes with inward regret. He only hoped Sans wouldn't bring the flub up and embarrass him further.

"I'm not a ball of anxiety." He grumbled with a look directed at Sans. The roommate did not need to spill more of Qrow's miserable faults to the changeling. She'd already seen him at his most pathetic depressive state. Turning his comment instead to a humorous one, he corrected with a usual splash of prideful arrogance, "I'm a beanpole of anxiety." His smile shaped into a more genuine one as Toby stuck up for him-- not that he needed her to. Still, it was nice to hear she didn't agree with the monster's teasing adjective.

Qrow wasn't going to linger on the topic of how Sans became his roommate before, but after that comment,he didn't think it could hurt to even the playing field in the game of Let's reveal embarrassing facts to the pretty girl. "Sans was convicted of a crime he didn't commit, and broke outta jail a few months ago. A real dangerous criminal, he is." He smirked jokingly. Obviously, the bag of bones was harmless. Or at least appeared to be. Qrow knew the truth of his hidden abilities, but that didn't change the fact that Sans was a very good person at heart.

Toby also didn't need to know that Sans had almost killed Crowley a few months ago, nor that Qrow had in turn killed a doppelganger of Sans. All of these things-- he glanced to Sans with a careful look-- did not need to be in this conversation.

Well, at least Qrow admitted that he was a nervous wreck, or at least Sans assumed he knew what was being implied there. Either way, he was quick to offer his own rebuttal by explaining to his girlfriend what happened with Sans before, though he obviously omitted some details that he very clearly wanted to keep hidden. Not that Sans even had a thought of saying anything about that mess.

"you just admitted that you're housing a criminal." Sans stated, reminding Qrow that something like that would have just as much to say about him as it did about the skeleton. "then again, you're distracted enough worrying about the idea that your girlfriend is gonna dump you for the slightest mistake you make, that you prepared dinner for someone without a digestive system." He raised his plate to put a little emphasis on what he was saying. "can't even give it to the dog." He snickered.

Honesty was a good thing to have and while Qrow would probably never go into that much detail about his feelings, that didn't mean that they weren't there. The whole idea was ridiculous, so Sans thought bringing it up to the forefront would allow them to deal with that now instead of later. That was his way of being a wingman: revealing embarrassing things so the other knows right off the bat what they're dealing with.

    and through the woods

Toby wasn't exactly prepared for this conversation. There had been a bit of a hint but more than enough to still ignore but Toby sat a little straighter and looked at Qrow as he suddenly brought up the fact that Sans was a convicted criminal who had broken out of jail. He said it so casually because Qrow already knew Sans' story and it was common conversation between them. But it was also one of those sorts of things that someone should have really told their girlfriend before she had shown up for the very first time and maybe explained the story ahead of time. Because his girlfriend regularly worked with the Watch, had caught escaped criminals, and often dealt with these sorts of situations on the other end of the table.

It was how they had met after all, Chasing after the same guy that was wanted by the Watch. Maybe Qrow hadn't figured out too much about her job beyond that, a lot of the cases she did were also personal ones, but arrests weren't all that uncommon for her to be involved with. She sometimes even consulted on cases that they were having trouble with, from time to time. Her abilities came in real handy when it came to solving crimes and murders. So Qrow joked and smiled like she was in on the joke but Toby's good mood had dried up quickly.

She finished eating what food she had already shoveled in her mouth. Clearing it as Sans caught onto the fact very quickly. Qrow was technically housing a criminal. Which was against the law and something that could put Toby in a bit of a grey area if for some reason she got involved in his case. Whether it would happen or not was an entirely different situation but Qrow had told her because he was comfortable with her. Because he trusted her. Sans continued to joke and Toby was silent still, trying to figure out what she wanted to say about it. Or what she thought she should say about it.

Yang was in the Watch. Never mind if the skeleton was innocent or framed, what was Qrow doing? She put her face in her hands for a second and took a breath. There were always situations like that and Toby understood that entirely. After all, she had been a criminal. Technically still was one back home. Well, this was suddenly awkward. Qrow hadn't caught on but it seemed like Sans had. Did she want to ask questions? Fuck, now she had to ask questions. "Not that I'm trying to make this awkward but I work with the Watch pretty regularly." No point in hiding it. Toby leaned back into the couch and shrugged a bit, no longer exactly hungry. "So how are you innocent, since I'm in this now?" Toby would need to believe in it, whatever it was. She glanced at Qrow, wondering what the hell her boyfriend had been thinking. Not having a coffee pot was one thing. Hiding a technical criminal? Toby wasn't going to do anything but she needed to believe what Qrow did, otherwise this wasn't going to go over too well.
