“Good morn, fair maiden!” Ezekiel stood on the threshold of the waiting room, booming out joyously to a mature lady with iron gray tresses who was sat behind a desk. “Might one of your veterinarians have an appointment free this fine day?”

“Um… Well… Let me just check,” she smiled in bemusement, turning to her bulky desktop. The sound of her long, ruby red fingernails clacking against the keyboard filled the waiting room.

As he waited to hear her verdict, he looked about himself with a smile of fascination, the chamber empty, save a gaunt, spidery gentleman, who had a small dog posed betwixt his sticklike legs. Ezekiel’s hopes grew with each second!

“Dr Chakraborty’s got a space after this gentleman,” the secretary informed the king, much to his delight. “What is it you’ve brought, my sweet?”

“A most extraordinary cat,” he replied. “I shall fetch her this instant.”

The secretary let out a soft, touched sound, as he fleetingly dipped outside the waiting room to beckon forth Jimmy. Beaming broadly, his faithful steward joined him upon the threshold, guiding along Shiva on her rattling chain.

She snarled out sullenly, the bitter smell of disinfectant surely not lightning her mood. A bloodstained cloth was wrapped around her front leg, which did so pain him. She had torn herself on some wicked barbed wire during their morning jog. He imagined that she might need stitches from the veterinarian, from this Dr Chakraborty.

“My… Ahem… That’s a… That’s a rather big cat,” the receptionist managed a small squeak, her face as white as an angel’s wing.

The small dog flattened its ears at Shiva and began to bark, sharp, stabbing violin shrieks of noise that ruined the quiet and tranquility of the waiting room. She unleashed a thunderous roar that silenced it promptly, a puddle of yellow spreading between its hind legs.

Working at Paws Center was the best decision Beth could've made for herself. It gave her purpose, and kept her busy while her heart repaired itself from the loss of more family members. Being surrounded by animals of all shapes and sizes reminded her of home and she felt her spirits lift as she tended to them, hummin' to herself and rememberin' happier times. Back on the farm, Beth had helped Daddy -- nothing too serious; clearin' out the stables and handin' him the required tools but as she'd watched, she'd learnt, and in doing so Beth felt prepared for the animals that came in and out of this veterinary.

She'd also grown closer to Aaron who worked as a caretaker at the Center as well. She'd never known him back in Georgia; he'd joined the group not long after Beth's... Well, after she was no longer with them, and so they'd never gotten a chance to meet. Like so many other things, Beth was grateful to Pandora for this second chance. She was on her own today, and was just poppin' an injured kitty back into his cage when she heard a familiar voice at reception. King Ezekiel! Beth lifted her head, her brow furrowin' as his arrival was quickly followed by carefully suppressed squeal.

Curiosity getting the better of her, Beth ducked outside to find Jimmy guidin' a very large animal into the room by a chain. Now the receptionist's reaction had made sense. "Your majesty!" Beth greeted happily, smilin' over at Jimmy before her eyes fell upon the Tiger. That couldn't be Shiva, could it? Perhaps her mother? The tiger looked even larger in such an enclosed space, and Beth could feel the tiger's power as it padded across the veterinary floor.

"What happened?" She asked with concern, hedging slightly closer but not wantin' to startle the animal. She gazed at the tiger with even more wonder than before, takin' in the majestic size and bold, vibrant stripes. Beth loved big cats; she'd always found them one of the most beautiful creatures she'd ever seen. "Who do we have here?" She was no vet, but havin' met them before gave Beth a slight advantage and she overcame the shock better than the rest of the room.

“Beth!” Ezekiel turned toward the young lady, smiling tenderly. “The fairest maiden in all of Misty Hollow! Nay… In all the whole realm!”

“And the hottest,” added his faithful steward.

    Jimmy,” he admonished him lightly.

Shiva appeared to quieten at her kind words, bending down in a crouch, her chest and stomach brushing the ground. She endeavored to lick the bloodstained cloth that was wrapped around her front leg, but Ezekiel placed a gentle hand upon her forehead and murmured a simple nay that was both sympathetic and firm.

“Why, this is Shiva! You must recall her from our Great Battle in the hurst?” he replied. “I am sorry to say that she tore herself on some wicked barbed wire just this morn. We were taking an excursion through that very same hurst when she decided to plunge through a wall of vegetation, overgrown and unruly, and hiding a most vicious man made creation. She resurfaced with a length of that vicious wire embedded deep in her leg. I had to untangle it with the carefulness of a surgeon, but even then it put up quite the fight.”

He withdraw his hand from Shiva’s head, showing Beth his palm. Many small, square adhesive bandages covered up the nips of the stubborn steel serpent, the white fabric standing out against his smooth brown skin. He derived comfort, and guilt, knowing that he had escaped lightly compared to poor Shiva.

A creak issued from across the waiting room. Ezekiel glimpsed a gentleman, possibly of South Asian ethnicity, crossing over to the cowering little dog, distinguished in his spectacles and white garments. Ezekiel presumed that this was Dr Chakraborty. He had begun to give Shiva wide-eyed looks, a wavering quality to each footstep.

“Are you a veterinarian, Beth?” Ezekiel asked the fair maiden, his tone carrying an edge of admiration. She must have been very intelligent indeed!

“Beauty and brains,” Jimmy echoed his thoughts, albeit inappropriately.

Beth blushed as she smiled somewhat shyly at the two of them, admittedly feelin' a bit of a mess. He and Jimmy had always been so kind to her. Shiva peered up at Beth with a quiet disposition, her large paws kneading the ceramic floor. Somehow she must have known that Beth was here to help. Tenderly lickin' her injured paw she lowered her body to the floor in an almost submissive stance. Very hesitantly, Beth reached out and touched the top of Shiva's head, given her the gentlest of strokes. They still didn't know each other well and Beth didn't want to push her luck. Beth thought she might just be the most beautiful creature she'd ever seen.

But somethin' didn't quite make sense. It hadn't been all that long ago that they'd all first met, back in that forest with Rick. And yet Shiva had been no older than a cub. She had been tiny then, and had fitted in Ezekiel's arms.

Beth looked between the King and Jimmy with astonishment. "I do," she breathed, peerin' to have a look at Ezekiel's palm. "I'm so sorry," she added, hatin' the thought of it. "I just... She's a lot bigger than I remember her." Beth giggled, hopin' this would give them leeway on how she'd grown so fast. Perhaps it was the strangeness of Pandora or maybe some kind of time warp. Time worked differently here, and could twist and turn as easily as the seasons.

A creak from the other side of the room made everyone look round and Beth saw Dr. Chakreborty walk out. "It's okay," she assured him. "I know them. This is Jimmy, King Ezekiel and this here is Shiva." She grinned, shakin' her head. "I'm just one of the caretakers here," Beth explained, wishin' she deserved the admiration they gave her. "This is Dr. Chakreborty, he can patch up Shiva's paw and get her back to normal. I could stay in the room with you, if you like?" She asked the room at large, not completely sure who she was addressin'. Her gaze fell to Shiva and Beth gave the tiger another gentle stroke, sensing her nervousness.

He chuckled good-naturedly along with Beth, before proceeding to alleviate her confusion. “Shiva was under a mage’s enchantment when you met her in the hurst.

“I had taken her on another of my hikes in the wild to stretch her legs,” he launched into his tale of wonder and sorcery. “The mage materialized suddenly, spooking Shiva, who launched herself at her in a fury. Fortunately, indeed, the mage had a good soul, and defended herself with a spell that stole away her might, rather than one that caused her any harm.”

Ezekiel often reminisced about the incident, shuddering to think how else the mage might have dealt with his dear companion. He could not imagine himself being the same again should Shiva cease to exist. The guilt alone would surely drive him mad! She was his last link with the other realm, before and after it had grown dark and ugly. She had turned his fantasies into reality, made a hero, a king, out of just some guy.

“Thanks, Beth. I could use the extra hands,” Dr Chakraborty nodded uneasily at the fair maiden, drops of perspiration beginning to stand out on his swarthy forehead. “But I need to see to Mr Shingles and Pixie first. This shouldn’t take too long.”

He offered them an obliging nod, before ushering the elderly gentleman and his small, trembling dog into one of the private rooms, the door clicking shut behind them.

Jimmy let out a discreet sigh, doing a poor job of hiding his disappointment. He was like an overgrown child with his inability to wait more than three seconds, this quality particularly noticeable when he had to queue at eateries of any ilk.

Ezekiel narrowed his eyes charily as Jimmy wandered over to a display stand, packed with brightly colored dog toys. He plucked up a spotty bone from the middle of the stack, causing the others to tumble off the shelf and go thumping and squeaking against the ground.

“My bad,” Jimmy grinned sheepishly at them.

Once upon a time, Beth would've been surprised by Ezekiel's answer. Maybe even a little skeptical. This time, however, the mention of a mage didn't shock her in the slightest. A couple of years in Pandora had taught her to expect the unexpected, and she'd grown accustomed to the remarkable and the magical. Besides, it's not as if Georgia had been any less sane. It'd just been crazy in a different way. Not once in all her years had Beth expected to grow up in an Apocolypse, and yet she'd done just that. Her blue eyes fell upon Shiva as the King launched into the tale of Shiva's enchantment and Beth was relieved to hear that the only spell cast upon her had been one of age, rather than pain.

"I'm glad she's okay -- I'm guessin' she's pretty glad to be back to her normal self too," Beth giggled, rememberin' the tiny cub that'd once wriggled in Ezekiel's arms. That was almost magic in itself; lookin' at her now to what she'd once been -- with paws larger than dinner plates and a jaw that could break bone.

"No problem at all," Beth told Dr. Chakraborty, and gave it her best shot to calm his nerves. Shiva was probably the largest and the wildest animal he'd ever dealt with, and while there was nothin' to fear, especially given Ezekiel's presence, Beth could understand the tiny beads of sweat that had started to perspire along his forehead. The squeaking of dog toys wasn't an altogether abnormal sound at Paws Center, and Beth hurried over as the stack tumbled off the shelf. "Don't worry, they're always doing that!" She said, pickin' up on Jimmy's obvious impatience. "Not long now, Shiva," she added kindly with a whisper.

    ***

The door opened a few minutes later, and out came Mr. Shingles and Pixie. As the tiny dog cowered in its owner's arms, Beth ushered Ezekiel, Jimmy and Shiva through. If possible, Shiva looked even larger in the enclosed room, and Beth skipped over to the other side of the table to stand beside Dr. Chakraborty. "Shiva caught herself on some barbed wire this mornin'," she explained to the nervous vet. "I think it was quite embedded in her leg and given her a nasty cut. She may need stitches."

Mr Shingles and Pixie exited the room promptly, which had Jimmy letting out another discreet sigh. Ezekiel refrained from chiding him lightly, Shiva’s wellbeing of his utmost concern.

Following the fair maiden’s lead, they gathered together in the room, its size dwarfed by both the mighty girths of Jimmy and Shiva. The latter snarled quietly, shifting her weight from paw to paw. She had never had a bad experience with a veterinarian, but Ezekiel imagined that she nonetheless found it an invasive and uncomfortable ordeal.

Dr Chakraborty nodded at Beth, tentatively bending down to examine Shiva’s wounded leg. She grumbled and tensed at the proximity, Ezekiel soothing her with murmured words.

“It is good of you to help,” he likewise tried to soothe the rigid veterinarian. “I would have taken her to one of our own people at the Kingdom, but was concerned about travelling so far and potentially aggravating her injury. Your assistance is appreciated indeed by the king!”

“It’s no problem,” Dr Chakraborty managed stiffly. “Beth’s right. She’s going to need stitches to heal properly. Will she need tranquilizing to stop her from… Um...”

“Nay,” Ezekiel replied, his voice full of a quiet conviction. He bent down by her huge head, laying his arm upon her neck, stroking the soft fur gently.

Murmuring more soothing words, he watched the veterinarian pierce her leg with a syringe just above the raw and swollen wound. She flicked her ears irritably as though she’d been nipped by a fly, but did not roar a protest or lash out at Dr Chakraborty.

“That’s an anesthetic to stop her feeling anything,” he explained to them, before sterilizing the area and beginning to stitch up the flesh carefully. “She might feel a bit woozy afterwards. Nauseous even. You might want to hold off on feeding her until later today.”

He paused a moment, eyeing her rotund stomach thoughtfully. “Which isn’t necessarily a bad thing. She looks quite chunky…”

Shiva flattened her ears and let out a deafening snarl, which had the veterinarian rearing back in alarm, landing hard on his rump.

“Wow!” said Jimmy, turning to grin at Beth. “You should never bring up a lady’s weight, right?”

Beth remained by Dr. Chakraborty's side, gently strokin' the poor tiger's fur as she tried to calm her nerves. Just as humans hated goin' to the Doctors or the Dentist, Beth had a feelin' animals hated goin' to the vets too. Or at least, that's what she'd experienced when working on the farm with Daddy. They seemed to sense it, with some putting up a struggle, while others would run and hide. Still, Beth was relieved that Shiva was in the right place and they could give her the treatment she needed. The quicker they stitched her up, the less blood she would lose and the quicker she'd be back to her normal self.

She looked up at Ezekiel and Jimmy, the King murmuring softly to Shiva. Beth smiled reassuringly. Having a poorly or injured pet was terrifying, and while they were hiding it well, she knew they must've been worried. It was no different than watching a member of your family be treated, in Beth's experience at least. Though she would describe Shiva more of a furry companion than a pet.

She felt a strange kind of pride as Dr. Chakraborty confirmed Beth's initial inspection. While she was no veterinarian, she was glad some of Daddy's training had paid off. Especially in a situation such as this. Even now, when aware of the bond between Ezekiel and Shiva, Beth was amazed by the obedience as she let the King bow down her huge head. Shiva could've quite easily killed them all in one agile leap, but instead she remained still, listening to her friend's comforting words.

Beth giggled at Jimmy, nodding in agreement. It was the most animated Shiva had been since entering the small, enclosed room and the sound seemed to verberate off the walls, making some of the measuring cylinders shake on the shelf. She wasn't surprised when Dr. Chakraborty jumped back in alarm, and glanced sideways at him, hoping he was okay. "Not much longer now, Shiva," she said soothingly, watching the tiger's tail flick. "It'll all be over soon."

Grinning broadly, Jimmy offered a big ursine hand to Dr Chakraborty, helping him to his feet with one mighty thrust of his great bulk.

The veterinarian mumbled his thanks, embarrassed by his reaction to Shiva’s outburst, judging by the way he avoided eye contact with everybody. Ezekiel considered offering him meaningful words of comfort, that he was not the only one who had ever been startled by Shiva, but feared that it would only exacerbate his embarrassment.

Dr Chakraborty hesitatingly approached Shiva, but she had forgiven him his slight, flicking her ears about disinterestedly. He completed the rest of her stitches without any other interruptions.

Shiva snuffled at her leg, mouthing the stitches experimentally.

No,” Ezekiel said, his voice kind but stern.

She listened to him at first, but was soon back to sniffing and licking at the stitched up skin. She would end up reopening all of the veterinarian’s good work!

“Would she let you put one of these around her neck?” Dr Chakraborty asked him, pulling out what was amusingly referred to as a cone of shame an Elizabethan collar from one of the cupboards. “This is the biggest one we’ve got in supply.”

Ezekiel took the plastic collar from the veterinarian, giving him a grateful nod. Shiva grumbled out a growl, but tolerated him fastening it around her neck. He was privileged indeed as she would have surely scratched up anybody else who had dared threaten her dignity.

“Excellent,” Ezekiel said. “That will certainly help.”

“I can also give you antibiotics in case of infection,” Dr Chakraborty offered him. “Beth, would you mind getting them? They’re in the white cupboard next to Shiva. One of you might have to move her out of the way… They’re the ones we usually give to large dog breeds.”

“Man,” Jimmy sucked in a breath. “You know she’s a cat, right?”

Thankfully, Dr. Chakraborty was able to complete Shiva's stitches without further interruption and Beth aided him quietly, thinking back to the days she'd watch Daddy out on the farm, tending to the cows and sheep. She took a step back as Shiva surveyed her new sewn up skin. As expected, Shiva was doing her best to adjust but with no fur to protect the stitches, her mighty tongue would only reopen the wound and heighten the risk of infection.

It came as no surprise when a collar emerged a few seconds later. It was just large enough to fit around Shiva's furry, beautiful head and Beth found herself looking at the tiger in pity, knowing she would find it uncomfortable. "I'm sorry, Shiva," she said sympathetically. "It's only while the stitches heal." She smiled, still amazed at the bond Ezekiel had with the majestic tiger. It was unlike anythin' she'd ever seen, and Beth found herself feeling oddly jealous. To be able to get that close to an animal like Shiva... Beth wouldn't have believed it in a million years.

"Of course," Beth said chirply, pullin' her gaze away and weaving around the group to get to the other side of the table. She hesitated slightly as she neared the cupboards. Shiva was laid out beside them and even without touching, Beth could feel her strength. She radiated power and peered up at Beth with deep, curious eyes. Beth glanced to Jimmy and Ezekiel before very slowly, reaching out to touch the tiger. "Is there... Can I ask her to move?" Beth inquired with a slight laugh. "I don't want to just push her out the way."

Though Beth knew full well she'd never be able to physically move Shiva, she very much doubted the tiger would like to be shoved after having stitches and a cone strapped around her neck either. "I just need to get there, Shiva," she told the tiger quietly, gently touching her side. Beth could feel her heart pounding as she felt every muscle twitch beneath her fingers. While no one would come to harm with Ezekiel around, there was always a chance somethin' could happen.

“If you ask her politely and respectfully, I am sure she will only too happily move out of the way,” Ezekiel smiled at the fair maiden. “Shiva abhors discourtesy.”

“Or you could dangle a piece of raw meat on a string!” Jimmy volunteered cheerfully. “If you don’t have any meat, another of those yappy little dogs would probably work just as well.”

“Jimmy,” Ezekiel chided his faithful steward, giving him a mild look.

Beth spoke to Shiva, touching her side with gentle fingertips. There was an infinitely long hesitation, where Shiva remained quietly lying out in front of the cupboards, resembling some manner of bright, eccentric sunflower with that cone affixed around her neck. He imagined that once they returned to their home or the zoological gardens, she would sit sulking silently on her own, her face a sullen, shadowy flower head.

Ezekiel considered repeating Beth’s plea, but Shiva pushed herself up on to her paws, bending the middle of her back in a luxurious stretch. She stepped back from the cupboards, puffing amiably at the fair maiden. He was pleased indeed to observe that she had taken to her so swiftly.

“Now, Dr Chakraborty,” Ezekiel began, grandly offering Beth Shiva’s chain. “Let us attend to the matter of payment. You are in luck. The king’s coffers are full this day. Mayhap you will get a little extra to line your pockets…”

The veterinarian nodded his head awkwardly, before leading the way back to the secretary.

Beth listened to Ezekiel's advice, grinning at Jimmy's suggestion, albeit a little nervously. The group watched Beth interact with Shiva; everyone seemed to be holding their breath as they waited for the majestic animal's reaction. Despite the large, plastic cone around her neck, Shiva held all the power and Beth let out a visible sigh of relief as she suddenly pushed herself up on to her four paws. For a moment she hadn't thought it possible, and Beth felt a strange kind of elation that they'd bonded enough for Shiva to listen. It was an honour, to have such a creature take notice.

Beth smiled gratefully at Shiva, giving her another stroke but this time with more confidence. The large tiger stretched out her body, no doubt stiff from being cooped up in a small room for so long. She took Shiva's chain, feeling the responsibility shift as Ezekiel turned his attention to Dr. Chakraborty.

Carefully opening the cupboards, Beth rummaged around for a few moments before she found what she was looking for. She headed over to Jimmy. "Here you go," she said with a kind smile. "These should help avoid anymore complications and get her back to full health. If you break them up into Shiva's food, it should make it easier." She looked to the door. "Should we follow them out?" Beth began to walk, the chain heavy in her hand. She wasn't quite sure if this was the right way to go about it, or if Shiva guided them, and glanced between the two of them, not wanting to make a mistake.

"I'm glad you came here today," she added. "You guys did the right thing. The quicker that wound was sealed up, the better and faster it'll heal."

Ezekiel did not hesitate to pay the receptionist, Dr Chakraborty giving him an appreciative nod, before turning to the people that had since gathered in the waiting room.

The veterinarian walked up to a dark haired woman, who had a small cage containing two white rats on her lap. She rose with a terse smile and they disappeared into one of the other examination rooms, the door quietly clicking shut behind them.

“That’s perfect. Just make sure you’ve got a firm hold,” Jimmy advised Beth as he walked backwards out of the other room. He bumped into a tall, sinewy man who was hefting a cat carrier into the waiting area, goofily grinning his apology. “Sorry man. Got to keep my eye on the pretty lady.”

Ezekiel shook his head at his faithful steward, his expression mild. He caught a glimpse of the cat in the tall gentleman’s possession, amused to find that it resembled a tiny Shiva with its stripes and red pelt. It did not appear impressed with its current situation, flattening its ears and letting out a shrill cry.

Jimmy lumbered up to his good king, handing over Shiva’s medication. He was wise to give it to him, as he had a habit of losing things, or dropping them on the floor and breaking them.

“My deepest thanks, Beth,” Ezekiel inclined his dreadlocks crowned head to the fair maiden. “You were very helpful. Perhaps you will come and visit us at the Kingdom one day? We have many more big cats, as well as wolves and bears and elephants.”

“And don’t forget the monkeys,” Jimmy added with a grin.

If Ezekiel had not been such a nauseatingly nice person wise and benevolent king, he would have made a comment about a big gorilla, named Jimmy, standing in front of them.

Beth smiled gratefully at Jimmy's advice and nodded, getting a firmer grip on Shiva's chain. She didn't even want to think about what would happen if Shiva decided she didn't want to play ball. There was a moment where she imagined dropping the chain, or Shiva catching a whiff of somethin' that was too tasty to miss, and she'd be off -- chairs and people and probably Beth's arm too -- headin' right out the door and into the wilderness of Misty Hollow.

None of that had happened of course, and none of it would. Shiva would not do that to Ezekiel. There was no denying she was a wild animal, but Beth had always believed there were more to animals that humans thought. They understood more than what they were given credit for, and the bond she shared with the King was unbreakable. They'd gone through too much together, and Beth felt her fears lift as Jimmy made her giggle again.

There were many animals out in the waiting room, with one in particular reminding Beth of a baby Shiva. It seemed Ezekiel had noticed too, his eyes roaming over the tall gentlemen's pet as the cat let out a terrified meow. Beth felt her heart break in that moment. While she loved helpin' animals, seeing them so frightened and vulnerable was the worst bit of the job. That, and having to say goodbye to those they could not save. An animal wasn't just a pet; it was a member of the family.

"You're welcome, your majesty," Beth replied with grace, smiling at the King and then at Jimmy. Her smile broadened into a wide set grin as Ezekiel invited her to visit the Kingdom. "I would love that!" She enthused, beaming at the two of them and then at Shiva. To see other big cats, and wolves and bears, not to mention the monkeys, would be a dream come true. "You take care now," she told the tiger, giving her a goodbye scratch behind the ear. "I'll see you soon."

He smiled broadly, pleased by the way she played along with him. “Excellent. Do let us know when you will join us at the Kingdom, so that we can prepare accordingly. We will make it a celebratory occasion.”

Ezekiel gently took the chain from Beth, then led his party toward the threshold of the doorway. He was delighted to see that the sun was perched up high and shining splendidly, nary a single cloud marring the dazzling blue sky. They would have a safe journey back to the Kingdom.

“So Beth…” Jimmy began coyly. “Are you seeing any-”

“Jimmy. My hands are full,” Ezekiel swiftly interrupted him, his tone convivial. “Would you mind holding open the door to permit our safe exit?”

“No problem, Your Majesty,” Jimmy bobbed his head, hurrying on ahead to obey him. He had no issues hefting it open with one burly arm, mild autumn air floating into the building, bringing with it the fragrant smell of wildflowers and grass freshly hewn.

Ezekiel turned to regard Beth, the chain slack in his grip. “Farewell fair maiden!”

He stepped out into the bright day, crunching hard grains of soil underfoot, Shiva and Jimmy keeping step with him. Ezekiel was pleased indeed to have strengthened his bond with Beth. Like Shiva, she was one of the rare beautiful reminders of his former life in the Old World.

“Y’know…” Jimmy spoke up coyly. “There’s that fried chicken place on the way back to the Kingdom. I bet you and Shiva are hungry after that ordeal, huh?”

Ezekiel let out a despairing sigh.
