It was tempting to call this completely perfect and to Rey, it was. She sat back as the sand shifted and gave way to her weight as she moved back, looking at the scene around her. True to Ben's word, they'd come back to the beach now the weather had changed as they had found themselves in summer. The time had rolled forwards so fast. So much had happened since the last time they had headed out this way, but here they were. It wasn't as warm as the hottest days on Jakku, instead, the weather was pleasant. She had used sun protection, which she had found out about recently, which meant she didn't need to cover up every inch of skin like she had when she had scavenged on Jakku. Pandora really was an extraordinary place sometimes with the things they had. So, with the sun-cream already applied, she was ready to enjoy their day at the beach. They'd been fortunate enough to find what seemed to be a little enclosed part of the beach- it was a small sandy area between two rocky sides of the beach, which gave them privacy and no one had ventured out this way yet. It was nice, and it would have been obvious to anyone that Rey was enjoying herself immensely.

She had brought a change of clothes, but for now she just had a light chiffon dress on over her swimming costume. She fully expected to go swimming at some point during this excursion as that was what Ben had promised her last time they'd been out this way. Even the thought made her radiate her excitement. The weather was much warmer now and she fully intended to make the most of it. They were sat on a large beach towel and she shifted a little towards Ben, planting a soft kiss on his cheek, "This is amazing." She breathed against him, before settling back in her original position.

The tide was cool and rolled onto the sand in gentle dribbles. Rey sat up and found her smile widening, it was nice to just sit and enjoy being here with Ben. They'd both been so busy recently, he'd been working at the SUF and she had recently opened up her business and it so far was doing fairly well; it kept her busy enough. Today was a bit of a treat for the pair of them, a chance for them both to just relax and be with each other. "You promised that you'd show me how to swim, remember?" Rey grinned round at Ben, turning into him, echoing the last time they'd been here.

Ben sat on the large towel beside Rey, dark eyes squinting against the sun out towards the water. The breeze that rolled over his bare shoulders was warm, heating his skin- the kiss pressed to his cheek by Rey even warmer. He smiled and turned his head towards her, using a hand to push the hair from his face. His shirt lay discarded behind him, and his forearms rested on his knees where he sat.

"Mhm," he agreed, watching her settle on the towel in that soft dress of hers. The sound of the waves rolling gently nearby played in a calming loop. He felt Rey shift towards him, and met her grin with a slightly raised brow in anticipation of whatever she was about to bring up.

Of course- the swimming lessons. He chuckled warmly in his throat, and glanced towards the water again. "I did, didn't I?" He replied thoughtfully. Ben rose a moment later, and turned to extend a hand down towards Rey. "Well, come on, then." He nodded towards the blue water, his smile remaining.

Rey wouldn't have been that surprised if, even without the bond, Ben could feel the excitement radiating off her. She couldn't work it down, no matter how hard she tried, not that she was committing herself to it that much. This was something like out of a dream to her; the warm weather, the sea and most of all being here with Ben and having him as her family. When she sat back and considered that she had been all alone on Jakku less than a year ago, it was overwhelming.

Swimming was the next step; she already knew she'd love the water but being able to swim would help that enjoyment. Rey beamed as Ben took up the suggestion and she pulled her dress over her head so that she was wearing just her swimming costume. With the dress on the towel, she took Ben's hand, just about holding back the impulse to run straight into the sea.

Rey didn't stop walking until the water came up to her waist; the water was so clear she could still see her lower half and where she was walking without any anxieties. She enjoyed the sensation of it, using her free hand to scoop through the water. Maybe her reactions might have seemed odd or childish to anyone else, but she knew Ben understood how much this meant to her. "I love this." She had already decided that much, but now she looked to Ben expectantly, wondering what would come next, and how they'd begin.

Ben was... mostly going to wing this. He could barely even remember being taught to swim himself, it had been so long ago, but he followed Rey as she fearlessly started into the water. The water that hit her waist settled at his hips as she came to a stop, bubbling with excitement that he could feel as much as he could see it on her face. It drew the smile on his lips wider.

"Me too," he assured her, before looking down at the water and wondering how to begin. "Okay, so... first. You've got to get in the water all the way. I'll help." And with that, he bent down to the water slightly, put his hands together, and splashed her across her front.

The sensation of the water brushing up along her made her smile widen. She grinned and dipped both hands into the water, drawing shapes underneath the slowly ebbing waves. This was lovely. The waves were much calmer than they had been a few months ago when they'd come here for the first time. Rey wanted to move and be out in amongst the water all at once but there was some apprehension there. Despite her excitement she knew that it would probably be helpful to know what to do, should she no longer be able to touch the bottom. Right, so she needed to get deeper into the water, but Ben obviously had other ideas first.

"Ben!" She tried to look annoyed but her smile betrayed her. So, never one to be outdone, she used her arm to skim some water in his direction, aimed at soaking his front. She hadn't given up when they'd been set on coating each other in paint, at least here the stakes were lower. They wouldn't have to clean up in the same way they had on that day. Rey scooped some more water in his direction with both of her hands.

Then, fearing he might retaliate she ducked away from Ben, into some of the deeper water and sunk down quickly, only holding her breath for a few moments until she stood up again so that the water hung around her shoulders.

"Oh, alright, alright-" He'd turned his head away and lifted his hands against her retaliation, but he deserved it in every sense and didn't raise a complaint. Instead, once her onslaught stopped, he dove after her with a laugh on his lips. But she was a quick thing, his Rey, and she slipped past his grasp and into the deeper water before he had a chance.

Ben laughed warmly as he moved closer, but raised his hands to show he meant no further harm. "This is serious, Rey. Come on." He scolded her jokingly, and lowered himself up to his neck in the water. He pushed up from his feet, and began to swim lazily around Rey, half way around flipping onto his back to do the same. He tried to focus on his movements more than he usually would, knowing the sensations of them would drift across their bond. It's easy, he murmured across their bond. You'll do great.

His feet found the bottom again, and he straightened with a smile and stepped towards her. An hand touched her waist gently. "You try. Float, and pull the water with your hands." Was that an adequate explanation? Probably not. He was glad their bond hopefully explained through sensation what he couldn't with words. "I won't let go of you," he went on, meeting her eyes in assurance.

Hazel eyes watched Ben intently, looking for his next move and already thinking how to counter it. She smirked at him, though stayed quite firmly planted where she felt secure, like she could feel she could touch the bottom and stay standing. There was still a sense of unease about going in any deeper or any movement which might make her feet leave where they had been planted. However, she was enjoying herself and liked the sensation of being submerged in the water, being completely surrounded.

Rey too held her hands up to indicate a truce. There were more important things anyway, like learning how to swim. She watched him with an air of awe as he just made it look so easy. Rey could feel the sensation and the feeling of the way he was moving through the water moving across their bond. She took a breath, allowing the sensation to wash over her. Having the bond did make this kind of this much easier. His encouragement made her cheeks colour slightly and she felt a little more confident to maybe try something which didn't involve her feet being planted on the sea bed.

While Rey was enjoying watching Ben swimming around in the water, she also did want to get going herself and try it out. When the moment came, Rey didn't have a clue where to begin. She understood what he meant by floating, but she'd never floated before and wasn't completely sure of the mechanics of it. She took a breath and pushed up so that her feet left the bottom. She used the hand Ben had at her waist to steady her at first but she felt anything but elegant and struggled to get her balance right and ended up just splashing with her hands, feeling a little panicked at the unfamiliar sensations. "You made it look effortless." She said with humour, but was obviously intently conscious of every movement she was making, trying to keep some kind of balance in the water.

Ben walked alongside her, hand light, only there should she need it. He chuckled at her words, watching her warmly, reaching with his free hand to smooth the dripping strands of hair from his face. "You're getting it. Look at you go." He laughed again to himself, though the pride he felt at watching her try this new thing passed easily from him to her.

He made a face as a thought crossed his mind, and he tightened his grip at her waist to pull her back up. "Here." He put his hand, palm up, in the water before them, and knelt a bit. "Just lay back. I'll make sure you stay up, until you float on your own."

When Ben's grip on her waist tightened she stood up, feet touching the bottom so that she could focus on her balance amongst the slow tide for a few moments. A few glances around told Rey they were quite alone out here and she was glad for it. She liked this time just with him, without the noise and bustle of others. Her chest swelled with the pride he was feeling and Rey felt her stomach flutter knowing she was the one who had caused that emotion to stir in him.

Rey shifted towards him at the suggestion and let Ben's hand take her weight in the water. Floating on her back seemed much easier and she settled into his hand, using her hands to cut through the water, making her feel a little bit more balanced until she got comfortable and in a position where she didn't feel like she was going to roll over into the water. This attempt felt much calmer and she knew those emotions would radiate to him over their bond. "You're good at this." She said, eyes moving round to search for him without moving her head too much to push her off balance. He was good at keeping her calm and balanced in the water. She stayed like that for a few moments, until she felt like she was actually floating and wouldn't just sink to the bottom. "I'm ready to try." She spoke through their bond, though nervous, she was ready to try floating by herself.

He shrugged. He wasn't sure he could really be counted as good at this when he could cheat and throw instruction into her mind, without words. But he'd take it.

Ben watched her begin to float on the water and slowly relieved the pressure his hand had on her. By the time she declared herself ready, she was largely doing it on her own. He smiled and took a step back all the same, his hand cutting through the water back to his side. Don't be nervous. It's just me.

Rey just remained still, feeling the gentle push and pull of the water around her. She searched for Ben with her eyes when she could feel his voice through their bond. It reassured her and there wasn't anyone she would rather have been here with, now and ever. Rey smiled, "You'd never make me nervous." She pointed out back to him, breathing in softly and slowly, enjoying the sensation of floating on the sea in Ben's company.

    ...

A little later Rey was feeling much more confident. Under Ben's tuition she had mastered floating on her front and back, and a little bit of shallow paddling. She knew it would take much more time and practice to get as good as him, but she had the whole summer to make use of the beach and they didn't have to rush everything all at once did they?

Standing up with the water now around her middle, she looked over to Ben and waded through the water towards him. Rey placed her arms around his neck, grinning up at him; love and contentment flowed easily over their bond, "You're a good teacher." He was, after all, giving her this new skill, something she'd never thought that she would ever be able to learn.

Ben smiled as Rey stepped towards him, his own arms wrapping snugly around her middle. "And you're a quick learner," he complimented her easily. And meant it; for someone who grew up in the desert, she was picking up swimming quickly. She'd never been destined to stay in that place, there was no way.

He stood back just enough to put a kiss to her damp forehead. Her skin tasted of the salty water, but he didn't mind. A hand rose, brushing the wet strands of her hair back, and Ben smiled. "You look beautiful," he murmured gently. I don't want to be without you. Not ever.

The compliments sent a bloom across Rey's expression. A familiar flush ran to her cheeks; he was the only one able to cause reactions like that towards her. The waves ran over her middle; she was sure she would never tire of the sensation of the water rushing around her just as she never tired of seeing Ben smile like that.

She leaned up, pressing her lips against his easily, tightening the grip around his neck. She could taste the salt of the water on his lips and smiled against them, lingering before drawing back only slightly. The desire to be near him always fluttered in Rey's chest again. She couldn't have cared less where they were, as long as they were together. That was something she was certain of.

His thought was strong so she had really had no difficulty in picking up on it, "I'll always be here with you Ben." She ran her fingers up and down the back of his neck, curling around some of the hair she found there, "I'm yours, only yours." They were words too important to just be left across their bond. She felt they needed to be spoke aloud. Rey leaned into him, her hazel eyes seeking and finding his.

Ben sighed into her embrace, letting himself rest there a moment despite the thoughts swirling in his head. There was something he'd been pondering for a time, wrestling with, deciding one day it was all he wanted and the next that it was the worst idea he'd ever had.

He abruptly threw up a wall between their minds, lest she accidentally hear the nonsense swirling around in his. Perhaps a bit too abruptly, and he pulled back and glanced down. "Sorry. I..."

He was nervous. Terribly so. And he was probably freaking Rey out, so he cleared his throat and looked away. Gathered what wits he could. And looked her in the eye. "You... once said you wished you had something to show what we were to each other. Something... permanent." Or she'd thought it, at least. "I... did you mean that?"

Because if she didn't want this, he'd throw the entire idea out the window and be done with it.

The wall he threw up surprised her and her smile faltered ever so slightly as she felt his nervous energy as though it were her own. She blinked a couple of times, not really sure what had caused it or how it had happened. Rey steadied herself, careful to keep her balance; it sometimes felt strange when they were so entwined for one of them to pull away from that bond. She respected his privacy in the way he respected hers and so she did not pull against it, instead gave him a reassuring smile.

Rey remembered the conversation from their first night in their new home; it was the first time she'd felt that kind of need at all. She wanted everyone to be able to see how much she loved him, she didn't care who knew it. With that in mind, she moved her hands from linking around his neck so that one fell to his waist, the other cupping his cheek; her thumb caressing the skin there. Before she spoke, she nodded softly. "I meant every word of it Ben." There was a look of determination over her features too; though his walls were up, hers were very much down so he would be able to sense her sincerity and the need to fulfil that want which she still had.

Though she wanted to say more, she left the floor open to him now. Her easy smile returned to her features; her love for him whispered easily across their bond.

"I have an idea, then." Ben nodded to her words. He knew them to be true; felt it. But her eyes were what calmed him. Pushed aside the doubt that he was certain would plague him as long as he could remember who he'd once been. A bit of it would always live there, always cast its shadow; but she helped him see past it. He reached for the hand that touched his cheek, gathered it in his, and the one on his waist with it. Their clasped hands fell beneath the water between them, and he held her gaze.

He couldn't kneel with the water, and he didn't have a ring... had not been planning to do this right then. But to wait would be time wasted.

    "Rey."

He left one of her hands there in the water to reach and touch her face. The wall he'd thrown up collapsed, and they were as one. And, somehow, the words came easily.

    "Will you marry me?"

Rey let her hands go limp in Ben's grasp, curiosity lacing in with her emotions. She didn't rush whatever he was doing, or push forwards; she'd always been good at waiting and she just let him take the lead. She looked at their hands in the water for a moment before leaning into his touch, searching his eyes.

As the wall fell down, she felt the warmth and comfort of their bond envelop her. However, it took her brain a moment longer to catch up with what he'd asked her. Rey stilled for a moment and tensed. Whatever she'd been expecting, she hadn't been expecting him to say that. The moment slowed; she became quickly aware of everything around her, from the way he was grasping her cheek to her free hand which was moving at the mercy of the waves.

It took all of a few seconds for a wide smile to find its way onto her lips as she blinked her now shimmering eyes a few times; her gaze never left his, not for a moment. "Yes, yes of course I'll marry you Ben!" She was unable to hold back the flood of her emotions any longer. Everything pulsed forwards at once; her love, excitement and a sense that this was her family, it was permanent. She was going to be a Solo. Rey flung forwards towards Ben, as her arms wrapped around him and tightly embracing him like she never wanted to let him go ever again.

Everything he knew and could feel from her, and he didn't take for granted that she'd agree until the words came from her lips. And when they did, Ben released the breath he hadn't realized he'd been holding in a huffed laugh, a wide smile stretching across his face.

"Oof!" He caught her when she threw herself at him, laughing happily as his arms tied around her waist and lifted her. You make me so happy; you make me brave enough to be better. I'll love you always. A promise across the bond as he held her, pressing his lips into her wet skin, letting his eyes fall shut for a moment.

There was the water, the sun above, the distant sands, and her: more beautiful and warm than it all. A moment he etched into his mind, never to be forgotten.

    -THE END ;;
