    JANUARY 12TH, YEAR 7
    EARLY EVENING || MYRTLE WOODS
    @Leah Clearwater

    Perrin plodded through the snow, ignoring errant flakes of snow that settled down onto his hair and shoulders. He was getting sick of the cold, especially when he had to trudge through so much snow. Though he cared for the wolves like they were his own family, and understood their needs, he wished that they didn’t call on him so bloody often during the wintertime. Unfortunately, there was very little he could do about that. Game was scarce at this time of year, and his brothers and sisters lost a good deal of their young and sick when there was too little food to go around. Perrin did whatever he could to help them, though. In more ways than just accompanying them on hunts.

    This time around, they’d sent word of a werewolf roaming the woods. One that didn’t stick to the full moon’s cycle, either. To be fair, the only reason they were concerned over its presence was because it was encroaching on their territory and they didn’t want to share their prey. And, of course, Perrin had asked them long ago to send him word of any werewolves they encountered. Not so much because he wanted to get to know them personally — he preferred keeping his secret to a select few, especially after recent events — but because otherwise, the wolves would turn against them. They were not fond of the smell of werewolves, from what Perrin had gathered. They did not see them as unnatural and evil as wargs, but they did consider them abnormal. They preferred to avoid werewolves at best, or drive them our of their territory by any means necessary at worst. Neither prospect was all that appealing.

    Not that Perrin even knew where to begin searching for signs of this werewolf, apart from examining the last area the wolves had reported seeing it in. They, not it, he mentally corrected himself. They’re a person, not a thing, He had to make the distinction, had to remember it, even when thinking so casually about the matter. If he didn’t, he was no better than Blake. The scars littering his throat, jawline and cheeks ached as if in response to that twisting, visceral thought.

    He continued trudging through snow, keeping his eyes peeled and his ears to the ground for any signs of this werewolf. Hopefully, he could persuade them to steer clear of this neck of the woods. Then again, there was always the possibility that this werewolf wouldn’t want to listen to reason, but Perrin would cross that bridge when he got to it.

    Leah had to admit, running around in the snow was actually a little better than running over plain grass. Everything was just so quiet that she was able to think while she was running much easier. And thinking while running was her favorite activity.

    There was a lot to think about, of course. A new pack. A brand new pack without any baggage in the form of one ex and a lot of yes-men for that ex. Even better, most of her pack was women; women who respected Leah's thoughts and sense of self. None of them would call her 'not as female as she's supposed to be' just for being unable to give birth.

    That didn't mean that she wanted to be around them all the time. If she was able to see their emotions, she guessed that she'd see herself, still cold and aloof, sneaking off whenever she had free time to go running alone.

    She supposed that she could have invited the other wolves to go running with her, but it was still hard to fully let her walls down around any of them. Maybe it was her past, or maybe she was still getting over being arrested barely a week after being brought to Pandora.

    Either way, she kept her routes to herself, and started running whenever she needed some space, which was often. After a few close calls in the past, she started taking the time to turn back into a human and put her clothes back on when she became too tired to keep running. After flashing one too many people trying to explore the woods, she found it more useful to change before laying on the ground, exhausted.

    Eventually, Perrin found what he was looking for: tracks in the snow, tracks that, when he squatted down next to them for a good whiff, smelled like a wolf but... not. He couldn’t really describe what it was about a werewolf’s scent that was different from a wolf’s, only that it was. It didn’t bother him as a scent, not the way it bothered the local wolves. But it was different enough to give him pause, to make him straighten cautiously as he began to follow after the tracks.

    The better part of an hour must have passed by the time Perrin caught up to the werewolf, drawing up short to keep some distance between them. His jaw dropped open when he took in the sheer size of her -- for he could smell that he was dealing with a she -- a size that easily dwarfed most wolves, with brownish-gray fur and keen golden eyes. He swallowed, hand drifting to the axe hanging from his belt. But he sensed no animosity from her. In fact, it seemed as if it wasn’t long since she’d stopped running, judging by the way she was panting.

    Uncertain how best to proceed, Perrin tentatively reached out to her with his thoughts, speaking to her in the manner of wolves. I am known as Young Bull, he introduced himself. Can you understand me?

    Wolves didn’t speak in words, but in scents and images, even if his mind interpreted them as words. Speaking to werewolves was different, though. Sometimes, he was understood by them. Other times, he was not. He thought it depended on... the type of werewolf someone was. Werewolves that were closer to wolves could understand him, but those that were more bestial and humanoid could not.

    He wondered what sort of werewolf she was.

    It probably wasn't wise to zone out so completely like Leah did after a nice run. People had a tendency to just wander over to her whenever she took a second to relax, so she was often stuck having to explain that no, she wasn't just some big wolf, she was intelligent even though she couldn't talk in her other form.

    It really got annoying, and yet, still, she wasn't paying attention, and someone snuck up on her. Couldn't a werewolf just go for a run in peace without people gawking at the giant wolf. When her nose and ears finally picked up on the approaching... human? She just sighed and waited for the reaction.

    She still wasn't quite used to all of the different types of humans and non-humans and everything else in Pandora, so when the human-shaped person approached, her mind tried to put him into two categories, wolf and human. He was enough of both that it was hard to tell. He didn't seem much like the werewolves (not shape-shifters like her), but more like a wolf and human at the same time? It was confusing and she didn't really want to figure it out.

    It only got more confusing when he tried to talk to her without using words. Part of her-- the part that was still connected to the wolf that Taha Aki had shared a body with long before she was born-- recognized what he was saying and wanted to respond. The rest of her was just bewildered by the strange scents and hazy images that were fleeting in her mind.

    Really weirded out and confused, Leah grabbed the bag with her clothes and slipped behind some nearby trees to shift back and get dressed. It was exhausting, since she still hadn't finished recovering from her run, but she still was able to move fast enough that she was back in front of the trees almost immediately.

    She was breathing heavily, but still kept her poise that she refused to let drop. Crossing her arms, she said, "alright, can we talk like normal people now?" Being annoyed showed less weakness than just being confused, and she had been weak for long enough.
