    Oct 28th, Year 109 || @Gabriel Reyes
Toby had to admit that she was a bit of a sucker for an easy gig. That hadn't always been the case. There had been plenty of times in her life where she had kicked an easy gig to someone else because they were better suited for it. But this wasn't something Stiles or Nick or HB or Arthur or... well, anyone on her team could do for her because it was a Toby D gig. Her agent Kevin, who was someone she had inherited when she had woken up after the Calamity, was one of those people who seemed to really enjoy his job. Which meant he was a bit of a stickler at making sure that Toby took at least some gigs she'd rather not.

Tonight was one of those nights. Some club in Ark City had decided that they wanted Toby D in for a night. The purpose of her appearance was to drive up attendance. Toby really couldn't care too much about it because there was a VIP section away from the main section of the club and she was pretty much decently left to her own devices in that section of the club. All she really needed to do was kill time for a few hours. Everything was on the house and Toby had to wear a dress that a designer had paid for her to wear. The details were complicated but Toby really... didn't care. A dress was a dress to her at this stage in her life and if this one was a little... sparkly compared to what she normally wore, at least it was black to boot.

She had already kicked back a couple of drinks, feeling tipsy as she leaned against the cushions of the VIP booth. Toby had a pretty good look at the main area and people could spot her in passing as they moved here or there, but most of the booth was difficult to see. Toby had only picked this spot so enough photos of her at the club would go out. The sooner the club was packed, the sooner she could leave out the back door and call it good. Then she'd have a fat check dumped into her bank account and Toby would go about seeing what else was needed around the house or at the office.

Point was, she had written off the night. Nothing left to do except get herself somewhat drunk and roll her ass home via lotus flower before-- well, it didn't matter what time. The babysitter Toby had hired would be there for the night, sleeping in the guest room, and that had been a better idea than waking the poor teen up at four in the morning to get them home when Toby was too drunk to drive. Regardless, she wasn't expecting to see a familiar face that night. Her illusion covered eyes had trailed the crowd and everyone got swept away, faceless. Toby wasn't on point, wasn't here for any investigative reasons, and she was three drinks in. One way or another, she was going to sleep well that night. Toby just had to wonder how much of a hang over she'd be nursing the next day.

And really if that was her biggest problem of the night... she'd take it. No troubles, no worries, just a little relaxing time to herself with the sound of club music overwhelming most of her hearing. Toby made a mental note to wear ear plugs next time she went to a club, even as she started scrolling around on her scroll to keep from getting too damn bored.

It wasn’t unusual for Gabe to be out and about at night, especially when Lift wasn’t home. Lately, he’d started getting more and more used to keeping long hours, going to be late and rising well after noon. He didn’t have a job in the strictest sense of the word. On paper, he was unemployed and living off of government benefits. But in truth, he’d started taking on small-time jobs here and there. Little things, mostly. But always something down his alley and on par with his unique skill set. Information-gathering. Investigating. Spying. Those sort of things.

That particular evening, he was at a dance club. Elusion, specifically, which meant wearing something fancy enough that let him blend in, but not fancy enough that screamed he was made out of money. What most people didn’t know was that Elusion also made a suitable front for shadier things happening behind the scenes. A little blackmailing here, a little extortion there, and who knew what else. Thankfully, Gabe’s task that night was simple. Track down and spy on a mid-level gang member, who was suspected of funneling funds for his own personal use. Pretty standard fare, but with a crowd like the one gathered tonight…

Still, Gabe knew the drill. Grab a drink, mingle. Plenty of people were perched on barstools and seated at tables instead of dancing, but the night was still young. There’d be more than enough time for people to hit the dance floor, so Gabe’s window of opportunity to track down the gang member wasn’t going to end anytime soon. He scoped out the area first, beer in hand as he weaved through people, exchanging a few words here and there. Eventually, he heard someone mention a name he recognized to his drinking partner while Gabe was walking past, pointing up at the VIP booth. Glancing upwards, Gabe caught sight of a familiar face and almost lost his balance in his surprise.

Toby, here? Gabe was surprised to see her just lounging in the booth, messing around with something on her phone. But then again, she was something of a celebrity figure. Public appearances were probably a norm, even though she didn’t look like she was enjoying herself. Gabe glanced around, almost furtively. Then, he fished out his phone and scrolled through his contacts and started to compose a text message.

Hey there, stranger. Remember me, or did you forget to save my number? ;-)

He hit send, then waited. Leaning against the bartop with one elbow and taking another sip of his beer.

Toby just sort of went where she was supposed to go per her agent. At least when it came to Toby D gigs. She probably should have paid attention to details in these clubs but she was here to drink and be looked at. Technically. That was more than enough to handle in one night and Toby still kept an eye out for trouble when she could. But with the amount of drinks that she had already had in her system... well, Toby was certain she was going to sleep like the dead that night. Which was all she really wanted to do.

She took another sip of her drink, casually glancing back towards the crowd in the club without actually seeing any familiar faces. Plenty of people knew her, actually knew her, and there had been a few people who had said hi before. But they had actually come up to the VIP booth to say hi. Toby's thousand yard stare suggested that nothing fun had really happened to her that night and she was checked out beyond a shadow of a doubt.

    Then her phone went off.

A text from Gabe. They had met twice thus far. Once in June, and once a few weeks prior. She had saved his name in her phone after she had driven off that second night. But she hadn't texted him and he hadn't texted her. Toby had looked into the matter of the goblin fruit, among other things, but calling Gabe for help hadn't happened. There was a small part of Toby felt guilty over it because... well, if the roles were reversed she'd be pretty pissed. Even if she had been out of her league.

But Gabe's text wasn't an update on the case they had shared or an accusation of Toby not doing the same. Instead it was... was this flirting? Toby thought it was flirting. She stared at the text for a few seconds, taking another sip of her drink while she mulled over a response. Toby was not aware that Gabe was in the club or that he had a good view of where she was seated. A perfect view of Toby carefully staring at her phone, waging her options, and trying to figure out how to respond. She did not close her phone or swipe away from it. Instead she tried to figure out how the fuck to respond.

Hi Gabe. Simple enough to respond in a way that confirmed she remembered who he was and had saved his name with his number. Except that was not exactly the friendliest way to respond was it? She scowled at her phone for a second and raked a hand through her hair, not paying attention to how it mussed in the process. Toby leaned back in her seat before typing up another reply. Remember you just fine. How'd you heal up? No smilies, but truth be told Toby wasn't much of an emoter. She was still adjusting to learning how to text. But there had been a little bit of an actual smile on her lips when she typed it ll the same. She did remember Gabe. She remembered plenty. A nice little night, the first time around. Toby put her phone down and finished her drink, motioning to a nearby bartender that she wanted another. On her way to being drunk. That sounded like a good time indeed.

In truth, Gabe hadn’t meant to come off flirty in his text. Well, much. Mostly, he wanted to mess with Toby, wanted to see how quickly she’d catch on to them being in the same club. Okay, so Toby hadn’t contacted him about the case, but it wasn’t like he’d expected her to. Hell, he hadn’t contacted her, either. Not that he’d found out much more than he already knew. Still, it wasn’t like he was disappointed or anything that there’d been radio silence from her for… three weeks, now? Something of the sort. He figured it merited poking some fun at her, a little something to break the ice.

Which was why he was still leaning against the bartop, watching how she reacted to his text. Like her running a hand through her hair, smiling briefly. It made Gabe’s own lips quirk into a smile of their own, even as he watched her motion for another drink. No leaving the VIP area to order more drinks like a regular person for Toby D, huh? Gabe couldn’t help but snort in amusement, even as he glanced down at his phone to read her reply.

Well, her answer confirmed that she’d saved his number and remembered their last encounter just fine, so he took a sip of beer and started typing up a reply. Healed up all right, thanks. He’d wound up getting his hands on some biotic health packs, or whatever the hell they were called, to give his healing a little boost without needing to actually go see a professional or call on Lift. Hell, he could picture the disapproving look on Lift’s face if he’d even so much as hinted at getting hurt like she was standing right in front of him. Seeking out Lift’s healing was only a last resort, thank you very much.

Sadly, got no new intel to share. But I did wanna point out that your dress makes you blend in well. Enjoying some R&R, or looking to hook some fish?

He sent the text, then leaned back and took another sip of beer. Enjoying for a brief moment whatever reaction she had before taking pity on her and firing off another text, pointing out his location. At the bar on your right, under the red lights.

Toby's new drink was delivered in a prompt sort of manner. Which was different than how she had been treated the night they had met. Trying to get someone's attention at the bar had been a bit of an ordeal, but she had just been a normal woman that night. But here? It was in her contract that her drinks were free. And going to the bar? That was asking for trouble, even in the VIP lounge. Toby had broken a few hands along the way and it was better for everyone involved if she stayed in her booth.

The brunette paused heavily the second that Gabe mentioned her dress. There was a careful, suddenly guarded look on her face and her illusion covered eyes flicked up to glance around the club. Because that was more than enough to suddenly kick her into an entirely different set of emotions. Fight or flight. She knew for a fact she could beat Gabe's ass and she was not okay with-- Her phone went off again and it was Gabe, telling her exactly where to find him.

Those same eyes glanced in his direction in the next second. She had been tense for a second but it was easy to spot Gabe as soon as he said where he was. And really, he hadn't waited too long to tell her. Nor had the conversation dragged on for very long before he had brought it up. One eyebrow lifted as she stared at him for a moment, beer in one hand and phone in the other. Looking perfectly relaxed while also looking completely different from how she had seen him before. First night had been jeans and a hoodie, then sweats and a hoodie, and now... well, dressed up enough for a club. Though really she couldn't comment on that because wasn't she?

Technically work, but not that kind. She had a feeling he knew about Toby D. Plenty of people did at this stage because her face had been... well, all over the place. And you? You're dressed up too. After something or someone? He had been undercover and pretty determined the last time around, so why not this time too? And maybe Toby was a little more interested in that possibility than what she was currently supposed to be occupied with. She did not bring up their previous case nor what work she was currently doing, but her eyes slid up from the screen directly to Gabe as soon as she sent that last text. Watching him with a little smile on her lips as she took another drink.

Really on the way to pleasantly buzzed, but that had started before Gabe had shown up. If Gabe had something he was working on, a case, Toby wondered if she could wiggle her way into being involved. Couldn't be too bad if he was at a club right? Unless... unless there was another reason he was here. Here for personal reasons? In which case he could have just been saying hi. Well, she'd let him tell her either way. No point in jumping the gun. She was far too relaxed to let herself worry about anything right then.

Gabe had a pretty good view of Toby from where he was standing, so he spotted the way her expression suddenly changed pretty quickly, which was the main reason he fired off that last text. Sure, while he wanted to poke some fun at her, he had no desire to alarm her. He was sure that, even though she hadn't handed him in to local law enforcement all those weeks ago, she didn’t trust him. He wouldn't have trusted himself in her place, either. And being texted about where you were and what you were doing by a virtual stranger — no matter how intimate your first encounter had been — would be alarming for anyone. When she visibly relaxed after reading his text and their eyes met, he raised his beer as if to toast her.

He wouldn't lie that it was tempting to go up and meet her in the booth for a proper chat, but even a rookie knew that he’d draw far too much attention that way. Besides, she was probably busy like he was, and her next text even confirmed it, though by the sound of it, it was Toby D business. Gabe couldn’t help but snort in amusement, especially when Toby didn't strike him as the type to even enjoy being the center of attention. He’d looked her up a while back, noting with interest how her online persona had almost instantly changed after whatever the hell it was that reshaped the world. He’d also caught some whispers here and there a about people changing abruptly after 108. Like waking up from a dream and realizing they’d been living another life, a life that wasn’t their own. It was mostly heresy, though. Some believed it, but most didn’t. He hadn’t experienced it for himself, but then again he'd woken up in the Wastes with a control tag on the back of his neck, and with his criminal records from a so-called century ago still intact.

There was never a dull moment in Pandora, that was for sure.

Yeah, gotta sniff out a rat, he admitted, returning her smile before typing out the replies one-handed. Should be a cakewalk, but we’ll see. The night’s still young. He wasn’t sure how much he wanted to reveal, not when she was more or less keeping him at arm’s length. But it was such a small-time job, and the information wasn’t even all that sensitive, so what the hell. Why, you itching for some action?

Gabe looked relaxed. Different from the last few times she had seen him. He had been irritated the first time around and then tense the second. Something to muse about even if Toby didn't know the first damn thing why she would muse about it. Or rather, she decided she wasn't going to admit to herself why she would. Instead Toby continued to sip on her drink, not really paying attention to the way that she was draining her glass much faster than she had been before. When Toby was bored she drank at a semi-decent pace but she also people watched and got distracted by reading things on her phone. Now she was utter distracted and concentrated on waiting for a reply, so it was easier to drink without thinking.

Her eyebrow raised slightly when he texted about sniffing out a rat. A snitch? Which side of the field did he actually play on? Not that Toby was against hunting down someone of that nature. Doubly when they had gotten good people killed with what they had done. A certain Cat Sidhe came to mind with that one. The Queen without a court. The one who had sold out the company she was working for to a rival duchess for money. A good number of people had died because of it, even if it had been a white collar crime to start.

Why, you itching for some action? Her illusion covered eyes flicked up from her phone and directly where Gabe was leaning. Was she looking for some action? Funny way to word that. The brunette smiled and then easily fired off a reply. Maybe. I've had a few drinks though. Not so good at holding back when I've hit this level. Toby knew herself. She knew the habit of being a little more loose when she had been drinking, in many senses of the word. Might honestly be a liability for you. At least Gabe was getting a heads up before he invited Toby along. A bit of a professional courtesy.

Toby leaned back in the booth and scanned the crowd. Gabe hadn't given her any details about who he was looking for but Toby was still looking around. Trying to see if anyone was watching the big man a little more intently than they likely should have. Certain things would be tells if they were on to Gabe in any way. But her gaze kept circling back to Gabe, waiting for a reply to her last text.

Gabe took a long sip of beer, waiting for Toby to reply… while taking in his surroundings out of the corner of his eye. So far, no one who matched the photos he’d been shown of said gang member had wandered past him, but it was only a matter of time. Elusion was the guy’s favorite club to hang out in, and he dropped by most nights like clockwork. This was actually the third night in a row Gabe had come to Elusion, trying to track that guy down, but Gabe was pretty sure that he’d pop up eventually. Gabe had been on far, far more boring missions and knew that it could take weeks, sometimes even months at a time, to get results. He doubted someone who was looking to spend the money he’d stolen would be able to resist his favorite club for long.

His phone vibrated to let him know he’d gotten a reply. When he read Toby’s reply, he couldn’t help but chuckle, eyes rising back up to her booth. She’d already finished her new drink, he couldn’t help but notice. Gabe didn’t know if he even wanted to find out how many drinks she’d already had. Especially when she had two healing factors to consider. Gabe remembered it’d take a hell of a lot of alcohol to get him buzzed let alone drunk, back when he’d been a supersoldier.

Shaking his head, he started typing up a reply. I do need the guy in one piece, he teased, grinning down at his phone. Maybe getting you involved is a bad idea, after all. Two healing factors, and you can’t even hold your liquor? I’m shocked.

Gabe looked natural down there in the club. Not that Toby thought anyone but herself looked unnatural in this setting. She only went to clubs when she had to for a case or for Toby D. She preferred shitty little bars in the middle of nowhere over this kind of scene. A place where people typically minded their own business, the beers were cheap and maybe a little bad, and... well, she felt more at home there. There were always less eyes on her too.

She chuckled at his first text back. Supposing he was looking for information and not just to give someone a bit of payback, then that was fair. Toby would have offered to help in a heartbeat but it sounded like Gabe had things well in hand. If no one was in immediate danger... well, maybe it was best she stay out of things. Toby smiled to herself slightly. Look at her being an adult.

Oh, you have no idea. Toby was chuckling because she was... well, she was terrible. My healing factors do not affect blood alcohol levels. Helps with the hangovers though. Unless she got really, really drunk. Then she was just exhausted the next day because she had been stupid. The brunette didn't motion for another drink. Instead she just shifted slightly in the booth and leaned against the back of her seat. Facing more towards where Gabe was leaning, not really caring if anyone was trying to figure out where she was looking.

You know if you're busy, I can leave you be. Toby had no idea if she was distracting him, but if the changeling wasn't going to get involved in what he was doing, it was likely better to let Gabe get his work done. Good luck. Toby would just have to be bored in the VIP lounge by herself. Once the place had been packed for awhile, she could bounce. Someone would let her know when and then she'd vanish into the night.

At least she had a good view.

It was easy to make conversation with Toby. Light and casual as it was, the words flowed easily between them. Usually, that meant that Gabe was putting on a front — how else would he get information out of anyone if he wasn't friendly? — but that wasn't the case with Toby. Like he'd noticed the first time they met, there was a certain familiarity between them, a certain… he really wasn't sure what else to call it besides a spark. He'd been too caught up with trying to get back into the game last time they'd run into each other to really think about it. But now he was just doing recon, so it was easier to mull it over. Easier to entertain more than a couple of scenarios, what with the way she was smiling at him.

Funny, more than a few men and women had smiled at him like that over the past few nights he’d spent lounging about the club, but none had really caught his eye the way Toby’s had. Maybe he was just lonely, missing Corvo more than usual that night. But if he was just lonely… hell, he could’ve taken anybody home over the last couple of nights, but he hadn’t. It’d barely even crossed his mind until now. Looking up at Toby, eager to catch her eye while she typed out a reply, he realized that so-called spark might run a little deeper than loneliness, after all.

Swallowing roughly, he glanced back down at his phone to read her reply, lips tugging into another smirk. Lucky you, hangovers can be a real bitch, he commented, scrunching up his nose. He hadn’t had much in the way of hangovers in decades — he remembered nights with Jack spent trying to figure out how many bottles it would take them to get absolutely shit-faced — but he’d had more than his fair share of them over the last couple of years to relearn his limits.

But Toby’s next post made him scoff, shaking his head. You, a bother? Please, I’ve been bored out of my mind waiting for this guy to show. If this winds up being strike three… He didn’t know what he’d do. Keep dropping by Elusion, probably. No one knew where the guy lived, and Gabe hadn’t rebuilt up enough contacts yet to track the guy down by name alone. So, the old-fashioned way it was. Preferably sooner rather than later, but beggars couldn’t be choosers.

A thought suddenly occurred to him, making him quickly type out another text. Just how much can you see from up there?

Toby already knew there was something there but it was something she wasn't keen on pursuing. At least, not... things were complicated in her head. Was she lonely? Absolutely. Was she ready for heartbreak all over again? Was she ready to get so attached that he took a piece of her heart with him when he left? Pandora made things all the more difficult on top of everything else. Toby still hadn't figured out if she considered Qrow vanishing and reappearing to be a good thing or not. Being the only one who knew... hurt in a different way.

She ignored the suddenly quirk of her lips at Gabe's suggestion that she wasn't a bother. Three nights in a row here is not something I'd wish on anyone. Unless that was his thing. Were clubs his thing? Toby looked away from him and had a mental battle. Trying to figure out where that line of friendship could easily fall. Enough. Toby could see plenty of the club from here in the slightly elevated V.I.P. side. Her smile eased into a bit more of a smirk as Toby relaxed. This was exactly how she'd joke with a friend. Safe ground.

But really if this is something you do for fun, I don't know if we can be friends. Joking and playing around. Gabe seemed to be someone who worked a little bit on the gray side... but he was also someone who had gone after drug dealers because they had been dealing to a kid. That was someone Toby could easily be friends with or even work with, from time to time. Want to give me a description and I can tell you if I see him? It was probably a good thing she had learned how to text faster in the last couple of years. She normally answered in shorter lines... unless she was close to someone.

Whatever. Friends were always good. It was up to Gabe if he wanted her help or not. She would be fine either way. Perhaps a little more bored if he said no, but fine.

Three nights in a row wasn’t really all that bad, as far as recon was concerned. Gabe had a great deal of patience when he put his mind to it, or maybe he was just that stubborn. But he’d infiltrated Talon, spending almost a decade in their ranks, without anyone being the wiser. (Besides Sombra, but she didn’t really count.) When it mattered, Gabe played the long game. Only… spending so many years somewhere between dead and alive, and having all but abandoned his morals, had taken its toll on him in more ways than one. Letting his guard down was one of them, no matter how comfortable he felt chatting with Toby. There were always half a dozen scenarios about how things could go wrong and how to deal with them in the back of his mind, no matter who he was talking to.

Old habits died hard, he supposed.

He read Toby’s replies and snorted. What, not up to the challenge? And here I thought you liked busting secret meetings and coming up with clever disguises, he teased back in answer to her first text, hitting send before he’d even realized what he’d written. When he stared down at the words, a small frown spread on his face. Had he been too dismissive? Too condescending? Too flirtatious?

After all these years, he’d begun to second-guess everything he’d once taken for granted, even the way he addressed people. Either pushing them away, or keeping them at arm’s length, or even sweet-talking them with empty words. He knew he wasn’t just sweet-talking Toby, but he wasn’t pushing her away or keeping her at arm’s length, either. It was actually nice, chatting with her like this. But chatting with her so comfortably was dangerous, he suddenly realized. Dangerous in a way he hadn’t rightly considered until just then. He was talking to her like he was talking to a friend, like Angela, or Ana, or… Jack.

Clearing his throat, he decided there wasn’t really any going back now. Going up to Toby’s booth would draw too many eyes, but it would cut down on his recon time if she spotted the guy before he did. Luckily, his case wasn’t all that sensitive. Once he’d found the guy and planted a tracker on him, Gabe’s part would be over and the rest was up to the guy’s gang.

Tall and lanky, with wavy dirty-blond hair to his shoulders and dark eyes. Long face, crooked nose. Gap between his front teeth, and usually has stubble, he typed, gaze occasionally taking in his surroundings. All I ever saw was photos of him, but it’s a pretty distinct look. You’ll know him when you see him. Or so he hoped, though it was really anyone’s guess at this point. If the bastard had already realized his gang was out to get him…

Thanks, he added, polishing off the rest of his beer and motioning the barman for another one. Two pairs of eyes are always better than one.

Clever? That had just been... well, that didn't matter. Hey, you were there too. Not allowed to give me shit for that. She took the teasing in stride and fired back easily. That was the drinks. Toby knew that much. She got much more relaxed and had less of a filter. Apparently that applied to her texting as well. Toby already knew that one though. She had made a bunch of bad choices when she really got going. Thankfully she was just riding that tipsy level.

So Toby had at least a little bit of control left.

Gabe gave her a bit of a description and Toby had to admit that she hadn't been expecting so much detail. Maybe about half, but he was basically describing the guy more than enough. Her eyes slid across the crowd and saw... no one even close to who Gabe described. There was a few people who might have if you squinted hard enough. You might be out of luck. Don't see anyone like that down there. Three strikes and he was out?

Toby stopped herself from asking more information. Or rather, making suggestions. After all, if this was his third attempt how likely was it that someone had gotten word to the rat? She didn't know who Gabe was working for. Don't think he's up here either. But had Toby been paying attention in the V.I.P. lounge? Nope. Her ass had been in this seat since she had got in and she had basically ignored everyone else up until then. Wanna come check it out? What the hell, why not? He could see for himself and have a better view of the overall club. That had to be easier. All she had to do was let someone know she was expecting company and they'd let him through to her booth. Or... just the lounge, if he preferred to stick to that.

You know what they say about great minds… he typed out, leaving it at that and grinning despite himself. He glanced up at Toby as soon as he sent it, the grin still on his face as he admired her for a moment, just because he could. Luckily, she already seemed to be scanning the crowd, so he had enough time to school his expression into something a little more neutral before she glanced his way again, so all that she’d see would be him taking a sip from his new beer. (Was this the third or fourth beer now? He wasn’t sure.) But while his own eyes took in the immediate vicinity around him, he still didn’t spot anyone who looked like the guy he’d seen in those photos. Nor did Toby, according to her next reply.

The night was still young, he reminded himself with a long sigh. But now he was distracted and wished he hadn’t come to Elusion on business. It wasn’t his kind of scene, but he didn’t mind it as much with such company. Although texting Toby wasn’t as fun as actually talking to her. He stared up at her booth, taking in the few people also lounging about upstairs with her, but he couldn’t see them well from his position.
Then he got another text from Toby, and his eyebrows climbed in surprise. Was she really inviting him upstairs? He shot her a curious look, but she seemed serious. Genuine, even. She was right, he’d have a better view if he were looking at the club from the second floor. But she was also pretty famous, and Gabe wasn’t eager to get his face on any cameras. The chances of people trying to track him down were low, but he didn’t want to tempt fate. Unless…

Gabe fished out a pair of sunglasses, slipping them on before he ran a hand through his hair, messing it up. He couldn’t do anything about his beard, but the glasses would just have to do on such short notice. Sure, I’ll be there in three, he texted back, before slipping his phone into his pocket, grabbing his beer, and making his way for the stairs. He didn’t feel nervous about chatting with Toby in a more casual setting, but there was a tight feeling in his gut all the same as he climbed up the stairs, coming face-to-face with security once he reached the top.

The guy eyed him funny for a few moments before stepping to the side, letting him pass. Gabe whistled silently, eyes sweeping across the lounge quickly just in case he spotted a mass of dirty blond hair, before making his way to Toby. He probably could’ve just wandered around the other booths, but he had a feeling they were all booked by big names. They didn’t let just anyone upstairs, especially when Gabe had heard rumors about a high-end escort service available at the club. Best to stick with Toby, and keep his sunglasses on as ridiculous as he no doubt looked.

“We really gotta stop meeting like this,” he said by way of greeting, leaning against the cushioned seat and proffering a hand towards Toby. “People will start talking, don’t you think?”

Great minds think alike? Ah well, she supposed it could be thought of in that manner. Not that Toby really thought their of them had been great at the warehouse. Toby was probably to blame for that but she had just been a little too shocked at finding drugs cut with pixie dust. Toby could have acted like she was on drugs, very easily, but she also... didn't have as much of a need to.

Sure, I'll be there in three. Three minutes to come up stairs? Was he joining her at the booth or just looking in the V.I.P. section of the club. Either way, her help would have been given and Toby did wish Gabe luck. The brunette lifted her hand to wave down another bartender and get another round of her drink. This would be the last one. Anymore after this and getting home would-- well, she'd be drunk. One last drink and then she'd be good to go for the night.

Her drink was delivered shortly before Gabe wound up walking up to her booth. Toby glanced up with a polite smile on her lips but it froze the second she got a look at him. Was he wearing sunglasses?! In a club? At night? Her smile tipped into something amused and lopsided as she set eyes on it, not even thinking about how he might have been trying to keep his identity on the low around her. Or rather, around the people who were likely taking pictures of Toby D.

"Nice shades, Gabe." There was a little snort of laughter to go with it and Toby lifted her hand to shake his. Toby was almost certain that only douchebags wore sunglasses in clubs but until she heard the reason, the changeling was willing to give him the benefit of having a real reason. "They probably will." Toby couldn't help the situation but at least Gabe was... semi-aware of it all. She figured he had probably looked her up online after she had given him her card, so he likely knew all about Toby D. Which was a bit of a shame. It had been refreshing the first time around, when he hadn't known who she was at all. "See your man up here?" Toby was guessing no but as she shook his hand, she figured there was no harm in triple checking.

Toby’s smile widened as soon as she spotted him, eyes sparkling in amusement. Gabe resisted the urge to roll his eyes, even though he hadn’t really expected any other reaction from her. No one who wanted to be taken seriously wore sunglasses after sunset, let alone in a dance club. But it was better to be safe than sorry, and there was little else he could do to hide his face on such short notice.

“You’re just jealous they make me look cool,” he countered, knowing full well they made him look more like a fool instead. But he easily fell back into a comfortable pattern, enjoying the banter between them. This wasn’t like their previous encounter, when they’d met under very different circumstances and were both too caught up with work to enjoy the moment. This was relaxed, casual. Social. As a rule, Gabe didn’t like mixing business with pleasure, but maybe… maybe he could make an exception.

He was sure cameras would flash no matter how he greeted Toby, so he went ahead and kissed the back of her hand. Partly to make whoever was watching them think he was just one of the many rumored men wandering through Toby’s life, partly because he wanted to see how she’d react. And partly because it wouldn’t make what he was about to do next out of place.

Straightening, he slipped into the booth next to her with a wide smile and set his drink next to hers on the table. Then he leaned a little closer, close enough that he caught the faint whiff of perfume on her, and whispered, “Not yet, but let’s keep that on the down-low. Better they all think I’m just some pretty arm candy you picked up rather than looking for someone.”

He leaned back, grinning. “So, how’ve you been?” he asked, eyeing the barman who was standing a little too close for comfort.

You're just jealous they make me look cool. Instantly, Toby laughed. It was hard not to because he said the line completely straight faced despite his tone. That heavy smirk was still easy to read on her lips but Toby hadn't been expecting Gabe to suddenly kiss her hand. She stilled for a second, those illusion covered eyes glancing up at the big guy despite his shades, as if she were trying to get a read on his face properly. Which she couldn't. Toby could see clear as day in the dark club but she couldn't see past those shaded lenses.

She didn't know how to feel about that. Didn't know if that was a regular thing for Gabe, granted it hadn't happened the first time around, or if there was something else happening. Thankfully Gabe filled in the blanks of why he had done that and she offered another little snort before looking away from him. It was nothing. It had been nothing. "Easily enough done." Toby relaxed back in her seat and put her easy smile back on her face. If he wanted to play the pretty arm candy, then she was perfectly fine with that. Even if it was hard to fight back the memory of his mouth on her ear when he leaned into whisper.

"Been alright. Same ole same, basically." Which meant a hectic work life for Toby, but she wasn't about to delve into too many of the details... at least not currently. Looking for a healer for Oz, trying to keep her company moving forward, all sorts of things like that. Gilly, school, work, saving people... all things that took up her time on an average day. In a way, hilariously, these breaks as Toby D were just that. Breaks from everything else going on in her life.

Toby took another drink and flashed Gabe a smile. "How about you? Anything new with you?" She knew a bit of information from when they had spoken that first time around. Walking back to his motel room while trading bits of information about their lives, linked arm in arm. His kids, her job, things of that nature. But did she really know him? Toby didn't think she did... but maybe she wanted to know. Maybe she really did want to know more about... Gabe. Being friends with someone meant getting to know each other, doubly if they were going to keep running into each other and... well, maybe it was best if they got to know one another.

Gabe’s body was turned towards Toby so it looked like he was listening to her. Though he was, his attention was also on the barman. Wondering how much the man would hear over the music, and whether there was more to him than just serving drinks. The way he stood with his shoulders thrown back and his hands joined behind his back, he looked like someone who’d gotten professional training somewhere. Gabe wouldn’t be surprised if that really was the case, what with a club like Elusion.

He returned his attention to Toby, taking in her easy smile and manner. Now that they were up close, he couldn’t help but notice just how good she looked. Just by looking at her, it was hard to tell her age. Hard to imagine that she was actually older than him, sometimes. Her dress glimmered in the low light, hugging her small frame. Well, small compared to him. She may look small, but he’d seen her hold her own in a fight. More than one fight, too. His eyes trailed upwards, noting how her hair, short as it was, fell a little into her eyes and framed her sharp jawline. He had a sudden urge to shove her hair behind her ear but resisted, instead reaching for his drink. He was just lonely, that was all. Lonely, and yet… he’d had no problem ignoring every other person who’d come onto him over the last three days.

Maybe he wasn’t as lonely as he was trying to convince himself.

“Not much on my end since we last met,” he said, giving a shrug of his shoulders as his eyes wandered around the dance floor. “Found some work, though. Little things, here and there. We’ll see if it actually goes anywhere.” It was as open as he was willing to be in public with a barman who was hovering far too close for comfort. Loud music aside, he preferred to err on the side of caution. “My kid’s birthday is coming up soon though, so there’s that. Hell if I know what to get her.”

Her eyes flicked over the crowd every once in awhile, trying to find someone matching the description that Gabe had given her. Toby still didn't see anyone exactly like who he may have been looking for. No one close enough to point out either. She turned to look at him when he suddenly reached down to grab his drink, listening to his answer to her question. Everything was the same as always for both of them? Toby had to wonder exactly how sane Gabe's normal was. Would he consider her normal, average life pretty insane? Probably. Most people did.

"That's good." She was glad that he had been able to find himself something to do. Something at least more official than tracking down drug dealers in the middle of the night for his own reasons. Everyone had to pay the bills, no matter who they were, and work could sometimes be a little difficult to figure out when you first came through to Pandora. Which was what Toby thought Gabe was. He had been staying in a motel and talking about his family before, but she wasn't always right about those sorts of things.

Her smile flashed when he brought up his daughter. "She's younger, right?" Toby remembered they had had a bit of a discussion about his kids before. One boy and one girl, though she remembered the boy was older and the girl was younger. Just not Gilly's current age. "There's a lot of cool stuff to do around Pandora too. She someone who doesn't mind being seen in public with her dad? Or one of those too cool for family members?" Toby had dealt with her variety of teenagers over the years and there was a certain amount of confidence when she spoke. The motley crew of teenagers back home and then all the different teenagers she had sort of adopted in Pandora? Yeah, Toby figured she had a pretty good handle on the hormonal little dorks at this stage of her life.

"If she's not the latter, I'd recommend the amusement park. Most kids love that sort of stuff." A day in Neo Dubai on rides? Gilly would have considered that one of the best presents ever. Except Gilly wasn't quite big enough to enjoy most of the rides yet. She was a little small for her age category, but Toby figured she'd start growing around the same time Toby did. Around thirteen or so, she'd shoot up like a weed and discover all the weird things about your system flooding with hormones like pimples, B.O., and every other reality of life.

Gilly would take her turn, just like everyone else ever had.

Toby took another drink and kept on relaxing, easily scanning the area as they spoke. They were tilted towards each other and looking around the room almost in a pattern that was opposite of where Gabe was looking. Making sure that every angle was covered while they had their conversation.

Now why did he go and mention that? He mentally smacked himself, but settled for another sip of beer instead. Hell, talking to Toby was dangerous. It was too easy to talk to her, too easy to start telling her things he usually kept to himself. Sure, he’d told her about his kids before. Had barely touched on Lift because the pain of losing her was still too raw, too real, back when they’d first met. But he knew she had a kid of her own now too, even if she’d never mentioned it. That photograph he’d spotted in her office last time they’d met, with the kid who was the spitting image of her? Who else could the kid be but her daughter? Toby must’ve had her reasons for not bringing her up. With her line of work, it was probably far too easy for her daughter to become a target. He’d have done the same in her place.

He couldn’t help but bark out a laugh at Toby’s suggestion. Not because it was a bad one, but because Lift just wasn’t like other kids. She’d probably find an amusement park ride boring when she could glide through mid-air with her Stormlight on a daily basis, and how the hell could he even explain half of that to Toby? Well… probably pretty easily, what with Toby’s brand of normal. Royal courts, goblin fruit, pixie dust… weird was just Toby’s thing, wasn’t it? Sitting in a VIP booth in a popular dance club was probably the outlier for her.

Gabe waved a hand, still grinning in amusement as he drew out a packet of cigarettes. He offered one to Toby, then stuck another between his teeth and reached for his lighter. “Lift’s not really like other kids her age,” he finally admitted, lighting his cig. “She wanders off on her own a lot ‘cause that’s the sort of life she was used to before I adopted her a while back.”

There was the additional complication of Lift having vanished for a time before reappearing, but having no memory of the last year and some of her life. Which meant she’d remembered him as Reaper, but hadn’t ever remembered healing him. Hadn’t remembered him getting arrested and put on trial, and certainly didn’t remember him getting stuck in the Wastes for nearly ten months with a control tag affixed to the back of his neck. In a lot of ways, she wasn’t the same little girl he’d promised would always be there for her, and it was a struggle to coax her to break her old habits and get settled down into a new way of life.

“She’d find the amusement park boring,” he added with another laugh, shaking his head before taking a long drag.
