    SPOILER TALK, Y'ALL!!!!!!!

IT'S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR AGAIN so we can avoid accidentally spoiling someone (PPL FEEL STRONGLY ABOUT STAR WARS AND SPOILERS, FUSE THEM TOGETHER AND U GET MAYHEM) in the Discord!

FRIENDLY REMINDER: No opinion is unpopular because people are split everywhere. It is literally impossible to please everyone because folks have their own expectations and hopes and dreams that are often wildly conflicting. One person's pro is another person's con, and THAT IS TOTALLY OKAY. DIFF FOLKS DIFF STROKES!! <3 Let's not be like this lol

    PROS:
    • The visuals were beautiful. The visuals were beautiful. The visuals were beautiful. The visuals were beautiful. THEY WERE SO BEAUTIFUL, GUYS.
    • This was definitely not a rehash of old Star Wars films, which I appreciate.
    • This was definitely better than Attack of the Clones, which I also appreciate.
    • Rey and Kylo team-up hot damn. That was probably the best saber fight in all the films imo. It had the tension and stakes of the OT but also the visual friggin coolness of the PT A++++ /chef finger kisses
    • Pulling a LOL PSYCH with Snoke. Vader still doesn't know what the fuck a Snoke is, and now he's entirely (??) justified in not caring
    • Puppet Force Ghost Yoda <3
    • Force projecting Luke was baller. He has mastered the way of trolling with the Force. I super enjoyed all of the Force depictions, just not Space Leia. A+++++ for completely ignoring magic mitochondria.
    • Porgs were cute.

    CONS:
    • There were too many porgs.
    • The galaxy still feels…………… small.
    • Finn/Rose/Casino sequence could have been streamlined. I would have liked to have seen less of that and more of Luke/Rey/Kylo development.
    • Super Floating Space Leia felt like a jump the shark moment. I like the idea of her having a vast reserve of Force mojo to use in a pinch, but they could've definitely presented that in a way that didn't make me blow air out of my teeth as I tried to stifle disbelieving laughter.
    • Luke Skywalker. I agree with Mark Hamill fundamentally disagreeing with the path his character took is all I'm saiyan. (Very well acted and brilliant on Mr. Hamill's part, tho!!!)
    • Commander Holdo.
    • The trailer made it seem more serious than it was, so I guess I can trace my disappointment to this being another Age of Ultron bait and switch type scenario. In fact, it tonally felt like one of the more generic MCU movies. I was hoping for The Dark Knight but ended up getting Iron Man, I guess? idk I'm disappointed in myself for being disappointed because I should've known from Ewoks and Jar Jar
    • This still feels like the Age of Ultron of Star Wars ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    UNDECIDED:
    • Rey being Literally Nobody is totally fine and unsurprising (mostly because there was a theory/prediction for every single possible outcome by now), though it left me underwhelmed. I wish they didn't hype up (or at least indirectly hype) her parentage for the past 2-3 years though.
    • The theme of the film seems to be about failure and learning from it, but they could've executed that in better ways.

SIRI'S COP-OUT VERDICT: I liked it but also disliked it. I loved some parts and did not love other parts. Solid 7/10??? People are right for being blown away and loving the shit out of it. People are also right for despising it. I knew it wasn't going to fulfill my impossible fanwank vision from the beginning, so I was able to enjoy the experience despite not being 100% on board with Rian Johnson's broad story decisions. I may or may not like it more or less as time goes on. Everyone is right. u do u <3

Lingering question: If Rian Johnson deliberately retconned everything JJ Abrams planned do u think JJ Abrams will do the same to Rian Johnson in Episode IX

I predict a time jump a bit since realistically they need to rebuild the rebellion. It's like 20 people right now and if they do I hope they have moments like the ending where the children/younger generation are 'lighting the fire' as it were and teaming up with the rebellion. Maybe other force sensitives coming to fight, not full on Jedi's but a attempt to return the Jedi Order. I mean as it left off the group we got at the end of the movie can't take on the whole empire, I mean the whatever the fuck they are calling themselves now. However with Kylo in lead damn, a slight breeze could take them out, that guys ability to be even slightly tactical all comes down to 13 year old girl hissy fits T.T

Yes, I hate the 'villain' because he's a poor emo teen villain but hey, it will be fun seeing Rey curb stomp him eventually xD

I actually feel like it has more than one theme to be honest. You are right about that ones above. Failure and learning. But there is also a lot about Hope, Acceptance and Change. I loved that about this story. It didn't just put all of it fish into one bucket. It has many buckets with many different types of fish. Failure and Learning is Poe, Luke and Leia's part. But Finn, Rose, Rey and Kylo are Hope, Acceptance and Change.

    Stuff I liked:

    • I'm in agreement with pretty much everything Siri mentioned above in her pro list. Though naturally I have more to add to it!
    • Every scene with Rey and Kylo Ren together was just freaking awesome. They have so much chemistry and they play off of each other so well. Those moment where they were seeing and communicating with each other through the force were excellent and that near moment when you almost think they are going to stick by each other and start something new together? Ugh. I just can't it's to good. T-T
    • HUX! HUXHUXHUX! I freaking loved that guy! Every moment of his screen time was a delight and you could tell he was enjoying the role so much. I need more Hux in my life. Seriously. I hope we get tons more of him in Episode 9.
    • The whole scene was puppet Yoda filled me with so much yay! It was hilarious and feelsy and important. Yoda finally got Luke to let go and dude really needed that. And Yoda was just amazing. freaking amazing. I love our epic puppet Yoda and his epic return <3
    • The Hyper Drive Explosion. Do I really need to explain this? Do I really? Just everything in his scene was so perfect. I kinda wish that Admiral Akbar or Leia were driving the cruiser but it doesn't take away from how AMAZING that scene was. It literally blew my mind to bits.
    • I also really like the fact that this movie didn't play it safe. It took a bunch of risks. It was very much like GoT and a Song of Ice and Fire in the way it likes to subvert ideas and plots and focus on other things. Rian took a huge risk by not making Rey related to anyone important. He took a huge risk with killing Snoke so quickly and leaving use with unanswered questions and he took a huge risk by subverting our already present thoughts on the rebellion and the jedi and I love it!
    • They finally came out and said what I've been saying for what feels like a thousand years. Neither the Jedi or the Sith are perfect. They both have huge flaws and Yoda even goes so far as to saying that they were both wrong and they should let the new generation find their own way. I freaking loved that.
    • I really liked Snoke. He was kinda awesome. But I will not deny I cheered like crazy when Kylo cut that b**ch and became the real big bad at last!
    • Luke seeing Kylo Ren getting darker and darker and contemplating killing him is almost straight out of the EU only quite a bit different in a lot of ways. When Luke finally decided that Darth Caedus (Jacen Solo) needed to die he never looked back though. He straight up made it a goal and as a huge fan of Darth Caedus and the EU I loved that little nod to the books even if it wasn't similar to how it happens in the books at all.
    • Leia finally using the force was great! Though I admit I wish it had been in another way... But the fact that she did it at all was an utter delight and I wouldn't take that moment away for an instant.
    • BB-8 being the one to say "I Have a Bad Feeling about this" and Poe replying with "Happy beeps, buddy! Happy beeps!" was brilliant. Actually, I like that whole scene as a whole. Actually, I just love Poe and BB-8. Don't judge me! ;p lol
    • Chewbacca roasting porgs over an open fire and the porgs just looking at him with this horrified expression.
    • Luke throwing the lightsaber was gr8 but the horrifying moment of the porgs playing with it afterwards just made it so much worth it. I thought that poor little porg was going to die. I would have laughed so hard and I think that makes me horrible.

Hundred percent love this movie. From the visuals to the themes to Holdo being the impetus behind maybe my favorite scene in a Star Wars ever. And thank god Rey came from nothing; there was no answer aside from that that would have been satisfying to me and there was no answer that would have pleased everyone. Also, like... on the note of humor, I did really like it, and I know some people (not pointing directly at you Siri, just internet people in general) thought it was too funny, but Star Wars has always been that from the beginning, and I think this movie found a happy medium between A New Hope and, I dunno, Thor: Ragnarok.

That said, Leia flying through space was p goofy and felt a little bit out of place, and I do feel like the porgs were used a little too much (that moment during the Falcon's chase scene when the porg screams and ducks down I was like "alright, that was unnecessary). The Finn/Rose side plot was fine for me, I sort of see why people are luke(skywalker)warm about it but it mostly came together at the end. I'm more hung up on some specifics of Benicio Del Toro's character and sad Phasma seems to be going in the category of Boba Fett and General Grievous in terms of "Characters that look cool and are nominally cool that just get dunked on when push comes to shove."

Side note: from what I've read, by the time the movie rolled around Mark Hamil was absolutely on board with the direction Rian Johnson wanted to take Luke.

Conclusion: I'll probably get it on Blu-ray, just to see that sweet, Top 10 Craziest Anime Deaths-ass hyperspace suicide jump over and over again.

P.S. Shoutout to the art and set design in this movie. It's the only time I've been blown away, especially with Rey's clothes starting out mostly light/white and getting progressively more dark grey as the movie goes on.

Also, my high school teacher compared Star Wars so much so to the Odyessy to the point that he showed Star Wars a New Hope in class when we were talking about it in class. So the fact that the heroes are just so down in the dumps and Han gets killed off in the most sad way possible just makes so much sense to me it is almost beautiful. Just a tidbit I wanted to thrown in there because just every hero gets fucked over in greek mythology. I kinda like where that went in a strange "This is my childhood" way.

Boy, This was like the most liberal movie I've ever seen!

    BUT POLITICS ASIDE

It took Yoda dying for a bajilion years to learn about accepting failure. Because if he had come to that conclusion all along, I do wonder why he never bothered to tell A CERTAIN SOMEONE WHO WAS ALWAYS ANXIOUS ABOUT NOT BEING ENOUGH AND ENDED UP STARTING THIS SHIT! ...Real talk tho, the Yoda scene gave warm fuzzy feelings to my cynical heart.

I have suffered the mcu humour, that makes me want to stick a screwdriver in my eye and keep drilling. And so far, with Rogue One and now Last Jedi, Disney Star Wars humour has been pretty tolerable and sometimes quite funny as well. Without a doubt some scenes were not necessary, but I didn't want to die either, so it's all good on my part.

Porgs are cute, but those crystal like wolves are freaking gooorgeous.

Awesome visuals, but I have seen better.

I liked the Rose/Finn plot, the liberal's wet dream. Maybe too on the noise and hypocritical? Yeaaaaaaaaah but stiiiiiiill suck it rich assholes.

The grey morals are awesome , keep them coming.

Loved the fact that everyone kept failing. Gimme all the subversion of tropes and make it like GoT. Fuck yeah.

Rey has an actual personality. It's also a quite likable one! Who would have thought?

Kylo/Hux, worst leaders ever, which is why I love them. It goes to show that Palpatines don't grow on trees and leading a whole empire is a really hard thing. I predict many funny moments of them trying to control their shit in the future and fucking up, I looooove them <333333

Poe I love you, fucking hell you are perfection.

Luke... sadness. no parents. i feel really bad for him, but i understand where he is coming from. Yes, it is strange that the man who kept wanting to give Dad Vader a chance would act like that towards his sister's son, but young Luke... he was a different Luke :ccccc His death was beautiful.

Dude, Jedi or not, you can't breathe in fucking space.

It was not Empire Strikes Back, but we all knew that. Big improvement from The Force Awakens. I have 0 trust in J J(yeah he made Lost. but he also ruined Star Trek), but I do wonder what he was planning so I might hunt down his ideas on the internet 0-0000

ps. THE HELL IS SNOKE???? WHY NO BACKSTORY????

i donut always agree with this utuber, but if everyone is interested in discussing movies in a deeeeep and business like way, i find this review very informative!!!

key points for star wars backlash explained:

    -the fear of disneyification

-the opinion that it felt like a mcu film(idk if its true but i find that a super interesting opinion regardless)

-the what i call 'rl edgelord drama'. basically, if every blockbuster out there becomes more of a comedy than anything else, what will the cynical edgelords like me watch ? i love Donnie Darko, but I understand the notion of wanting to pass with the time with something that doesn't make you want to commit suicide, but is dark and thought provoking nonetheless and Star Wars has offered us this with Empire Strikes Back and the uber edgy Revenge of the Sith.

still like the movie lots(it's just that backlashes are fascinating)

Really loved the story and the struggles and temptations of Rey and Kylo as they found their path. Thought Hammil was excellent and the most I've ever enjoyed the Luke character; they 100% worked me that he was gonna get the Obi-Wan death only for him to give Kylo a final fuck you light > dark lesson. Thinking back now, I think C3PO knew it wasn't really Luke and that's what the wink was about. I hope they stick to the story in Ep. IX that Rey's parents are just junk dealers and nothing about them is important and not throw in a final swerve because it backs up the very last scene of the movie with the young boy looking up at the stars and forcing the broom into his hand that anyone can go on to be a jedi hero and win the war for the rebellion. I thought that was the best ending they've ever done with a true message behind it. We've seen the prequels and how many jedi they're used to be that weren't skywalker blood, and besides, we know Anakin's mom was nothing special and we never learned who his dad was so it was never necessary for Rey to be a relation of Han's or Luke's or Obi-Wan's.

YODA <3 That was my favourite scene with the nods to Empire and something I'm really glad I wasn't spoiled on. Yoda saying 'Rey already has the knowledge the books possess' to Luke is hilarious once it's revealed Rey stole the books and they're on the Falcon.

I haven't read any reviews of the movies so I am unaware of any criticism. I certainly don't think any criticism should just be dismissed. I did feel throughout the movie that they couldn't resist themselves when it came to inserting comedy moments, tone was sort of set at the start of the film with Eddie from Bottom in the first scene and Hux getting trolled by Poe. Obviously it's not Star Wars without some wise cracks and funny droid interactions and shit, but do Hux and Kylo really need to have a comedy moment at a crucial moment in the film when they're firing everything at Luke Skywalker. Hux had just swore his loyalty by saying 'long live the supreme leader' as he's being choked and 5 minutes later he's disrespecting him by 'lol do you think we got him' and then Kylo replies with a slapstick shove into the wall. I also eye rolled at Leia's space walking

A FEW DAYS AND SOME THINKIN' LATER..............
Jeremy Jahns probably is the reviewer that captured exactly how Siri feels about the ol Star Wars 8

I think I like it a little more overall! It definitely impressed me more than TFA because of the BRAND NEW STUFF AND TWISTS N TURNS. Some things still bother me and will continue to bother me, but there's not a single Star Wars movie out there (aside from Empire Strikes Back o/) that hasn't had some part that bothered me lolll (but that's ok because it's also fun to make fun of them too win/win)

I JUST CAN'T SHAKE THE FEELING
    THAT IT COULDA BEEN BETTER
(siri will never get over how the entirety of the poe/holdo/finn/rose subplots could've been made completely obsolete with COMMUNICATION, CHEAPEST MOVIE PLOT TRICK IN THE BOOK)

    UGH

tl;dr it's one of those movies where if u loved it, i totally get u
but if u hated it, i totally get u too

I dunno, I sort of love the fact that Hux has become "the guy everyone goofs on", especially since he tries so hard to be taken seriously. I can't wait to see how he tries to get Kylo killed in the next movie, because that's definitely a thing that's going to happen.

Re: Poe/Finn/Holdo/Rose communication - I feel like the fact that everything could have just been better if Poe had chilled the fuck out and just done his job was sort of the point and I love it for that; Holdo had no obligation to tell him, a subordinate who'd just gotten demoted, anything, especially because he'd just gotten like half their fighters killed against Leia's orders, so it made sense to me that she didn't. Meanwhile Poe probably would have brushed of Holdo's plan anyway and done something stupid to get them all killed anyway.

I dunno, just needed to get my thoughts out on the subplot a lot of people think is extraneous but I really don't (people being reminded of the prequels with Canto Bight because of the CG just feels to me like they're hating on the tool, not the way it was used). Not super trying to change your mind or anything, but I just felt like if anyone was gonna defend it, I should.

Conclusion: Movie contains a Top Ten Anime Betrayals, a Top Ten Anime Deaths, and a Top Ten Anime Plot Twists.

I was on the fence about this movie. Several weeks later I wanna see it for myself and make my own judgement call. Still hearing mixed feelings about it from other sources. I don't mind spoilers though which is why I read this thread. I'm honestly still on the fence about this movie despite the reviews and discussions. Everybody has their own points though!
