Winter was supposed to be a happy time. It was when she got to have hot chocolate after coming in from the snow, when school sent the children all ice skating or skiing, when they could play in the snow and Sakura could make funny little snowmen. But this winter wasn't fun. It wasn't even supposed to be winter, but here she was in a strange new world, with no sign of any of her friends or family besides Kero-chan, who even now was sitting on the girl's shoulder with his best 'hmmmmmmm' face on, arms crossed over his chest.

"Come on, Sakura, we can't stay here forever." Here, being on the corner of Newman and Prescott street, the air filled with that tingling sensation that whispered of magic. But Sakura had her eyes tightly closed, and was shaking her head furiously, fingers curled into little fists, pressed against her chest. "But Ms. Lula said not to go past here, or else the ghosts will come!" Ms. Lula had been kind enough to give Sakura a place to stay when she had first arrived in Pandora, but the stories she told of Misty Hollow made the girl want to curl up somewhere, hands over her ears.

Magic was one thing. Sakura understood magic, on some level at least. She had been dealing with all kinds of magical things the past couple of years! But ghosts were spooky and scary and she was still shaking her head even as Kero lifted off of her shoulder and fluttered around behind her, grunting as he tried to push against her back. "Come on, Sakura. Just one. More. Step," he grunted, shoving up against her back, barely making the girl budge. "You're the Master of the Cards," he tried again, swinging around in front of her. "You've got nothing to be afraid of!"

And Sakura peered up at Kero, skeptical, but slowly, slowly she nodded, steeling herself. And she crept forward, one foot over that line of magic that she knew was the special protective barrier that people had mentioned. Her hands were pressed to her chest, eyes wide as she looked this way and that, desperately wishing she had Tomoyo or Syaoran or even her big brother to cling to!

But she finally, finally stepped over that line, the sensation of magic behind her and Sakura stood there a moment, hunched over, eyes darting from shadow to shadow and....nothing. The girl let out a sigh of relief, slowly straightening her back, letting her body relax.

At least until that white blur of something started to form in front of her, and Sakura shrieked turned on her heel and dashed straight back across that magic line, and back into safety, leaving a very confused (and rather friendly) ghost hovering somewhere behind her. Kero flew after her, calling out the girl's name.

Sephiroth had come to Misty Hollow by chance more than anything else. In the course of his exploration of Pandora, he wanted to see every settlement, and he wanted to understand the risks inherent to each one. As such, he regarded this quiet town with a touch of contempt, having heard stories in passing that had made it seem much more menacing than this.

As it stood, it seemed like a simple place, and it made Sephiroth uncomfortable as he walked, feeling like he didn't fit very well with the aesthetic of the town. Looking over his shoulder, he caught a number of stares before people pointedly looked away from him, and his lips curled into a frown. While Sephiroth was accustomed to being looked at (he had gotten used to it in his own world, as ShinRa had regularly displayed him for the public), there usually wasn't so much...

Was it hostility? Or simply suspicion? Either way, Sephiroth was not used to seeing those expressions in conjunction with the incessant staring, and it made his spine prickle as he walked. He wished that he could summon Masamune as a wordless warning to those glaring at his back, but his common sense indicated that it would only cause trouble. Instead, he swept down the street at a brisk pace, heading for the mysterious barrier that he'd been told about in passing (well, that he'd overheard other people talking about).

Maybe there would be something worth his while on the other side, though Sephiroth wasn't sure what that could possibly be, given that he did not currently know what would even count as worth his while. He did not, after all, have any money, nor any real idea as to where he was supposed to go or what he was supposed to do.

Still deep in thought, Sephiroth would have missed the spectacle in front of him, had the child involved not shrieked loud enough to shock him out of his mind, making his head shoot up as his eyes widened, cat-like pupils narrowing to slits in anticipation of an attack. Realizing belatedly that it was nothing but a little girl, the SOLDIER tilted his head and came closer, frowning deeply. Over her head, he saw the sad-looking, completely unmenacing figure of a rather put-out ghost. It waved at Sephiroth, and he awkwardly flapped a hand back at it.

"It appears that you have hurt the spirit's feelings." He pointed out to the girl in a bald tone. "I hope it's not trapped in a permanent cycle of despair because of your rude actions." Sephiroth added conversationally, observing the ghost again. He had read in one of Angeal's fictional novels that sometimes the souls of the dead could become trapped in the world of the living if they had residual anguish from their previous lives.

Folding his arms across his chest, Sephiroth hummed thoughtfully. "It doesn't look like it's in any kind of anguish. It looks pleasant." He muttered to himself, awkwardly waving back at the ghost when it waggled a hand at him again.

In truth, Sephiroth had already passed through the area that the barrier was protecting Misty Hollow from. The barrier surrounded the center of the town, keeping out all of the dark and malevolent forces that lingered in the wider town and into the forest beyond. But as he could clearly see from that seemingly friendly little spirit, not every force was dark and evil and malevolent.

But Sakura was still crying, crouched behind a mailbox on the street corner now. "Sakura..." Kero started, but then that man spoke up and it was mostly out of habit that he immediately went completely still, dropping down into Sakura's hands as the little girl, still sniffling, peered around the mailbox.

The man was tall, intimidating looking, but he didn't look like a ghost even if he was as pale as one!

"I...I did?" she whispered, fear battling with a funny sense of guilt. But ghosts were just spooky and tried to scare you! But still, Sakura rubbed at her eyes before straightening up, her Kero-plushy cradled in the crook of her arm. But the idea that it might be trapped in a permanent cycle of despair? That gave Sakura courage to step forward, right up to the barrier, that tingling sensation of magic tickling at her fingertips.

"Did you need any help?" she asked the spirit. Her hands were still shaking. And the spirit was shaped like a child now -- a child with old clothes, and dirty hair, but he was holding a little glowing ball in his hands. He tossed it up into the air and then let it drop, where it rolled down the street, away from the barrier. The spirit vanished, and the ball just kept on rolling.

"Should we....follow it?" But she'd have to go past the barrier again for that! Sakura looked up at the tall stranger who probably wasn't a ghost too. "Can you come with me, Mister? I mean, if it's not too much trouble and if you don't have anything else to do!" she finished hurriedly, bowing hurriedly, to him, Kero nearly tumbling out of her arms.

Sephiroth absently wondered if the fuzzy thing was deliberately pretending to be dead, or if it was just shy. Opting not to talk to it on the off chance that it was not fond of communicating with others, the SOLDIER focused his attention on the girl, arms still folded across his chest. A mildly puzzled expression crossed his face when she abruptly asked for his company on her strange mission.

Sephiroth was not used to being openly asked for his help. In the past, people had been split into two groups: The majority, who were far too frightened of him to do something as simple as ask, and the very small minority who were too proud. It was not common, in his experience, for someone to be so outright, and he tilted his head at her thoughtfully, heedless to the fact that the silence was now passing into the realms of awkwardness.

"I have no other obligations."He finally decided, lowering his arms from their guarded, mistrustful position and flexing his hands slightly. "I believe the spirit wishes for you to follow the ball." He pointed out lightly, nodding towards the ethereal toy as it continued to roll.

Crossing the barrier heedlessly, Sephiroth turned his head to address the little girl again, feline eyes narrowing. "If your friend isn't going to take care of itself, I suggest you hold them tight. I understand that this area can be dangerous at times." Absentmindedly, Sephiroth checked the materia he had equipped, nodding to himself. They were more likely to affect a ghost than a blade.

"My name is Sephiroth." He added helpfully.

Her eyes were hopeful, and as he agreed to accompany her, Sakura let out a sigh of relief. At least she wouldn't have to face the ghost alone. Not that she was truly alone, of course, with Kero struggling to keep up that cherade in her arm. Except she didn't have a backpack or a purse or anything with her, so she didn't even know where he could--

"Hey, I can definitely take care of myself!" Kero impulsively burst out, eyebrow ticking as he launched himself up and out of Sakura's arms, the little girl letting out a shocked note as she instinctively reached out to try and catch him. But Kero was already fluttering in front of Sephiroth, arms crossed over his chest. "You should see how big and impressive and powerful my true form is," he declared,, grinning in self-satisfaction, nodding his head in confirmation.

"Kero-chan!" Sakura yelled after him, even though she shouldn't have been so shocked by that little explosion of emotion. The cat was out of the bag, and Sephiroth somehow had seen through the act, and so Kero had given up on the cherade entirely.

"I'm not afraid of no ghost!" And Kero fluttered past the pair of them and through the barrier, heading off to follow after that glowing ball.

Really, if any of them had been a bit more knowledgeable about how the barrier worked, they might have been a little more cautious. It only kept out malevolent forces at all, and the child ghost had made no attempts to contact the girl until she had stepped beyond it. It wasn't proof of anything malicious, of course. But just another factor that Sakura and Kero had no idea about.

"I'm Sakura," she told the man, frowning a little as she stared after Kero. "And that's Keroberos" And he was being so rude to this nice man! But Sakura was looking at that barrier of magic again, took a deep breath to steady herself, and stepped right through. She froze a moment, eyes squeezed shut waiting for something to happen.

But there was nothing, and after a moment she let out a relieved breath and started off down the street, after Kero and the glowing ball.

ooc; So, I have nothing planned for this, so we can both make it up as we go along. Feel free to add whatever about the ball or the ghost or anything at all with your posts, and I'll do the same with mine.

On his part, Sephiroth had no idea that the fuzzy thing was supposed to be selling the idea that it was not alive. It had seemed very clear to him, but maybe that was due to having enhanced senses. There was only so doll-like any living creature could pretend to be. Sephiroth knew that from his own experience.

Raising his eyebrows as the fuzzy thing yelled at him, Sephiroth wondered if it would be frowned upon to set it on fire, but the little girl seemed to be very attached to her ill-mannered pet, so he pursed his lips and simply narrowed his acid green eyes as the fuzzy Kero-chan took off after the ethereal ball.

There was a heavy feeling in the air outside the barrier, and for a moment Sephiroth felt deeply rankled by it. Coming into town, he hadn't found the aura this oppressive, though that may have had everything to do with the angle at which he'd approached. Or, maybe he had come into Misty Hollow while the malicious energies outside the barrier were... resting. Did malicious energies rest?

He frowned deeply, waiting for Sakura to step across the barrier and join him. Sephiroth wondered if this was a good idea suddenly. Leading a child straight into danger felt foolish and risky, but in the same breath, she would probably do it anyway even if he declined to go any further. "You should prevent Keroberos from straying too far ahead. We don't know what may be laying in wait." Sephiroth pointed out briskly, in a tone that was neither friendly nor scolding. He spoke as though what he said was nothing more than the most basic facts.

He felt the conversation stalling, and Sephiroth flicked his gaze ahead, setting off at a leisurely pace, aware that Sakura would have trouble keeping up if he went at his usual speed. Rather than addressing the child again, the SOLDIER focused on their surroundings, and that unsettling aura which settled heavily in the air on all sides.

Kero was getting further and further ahead, and Sakura glanced back at the tall, white-haired man. It was hard not to stare, really. He looked like he could be a ghost himself. But when he turned to her, she blinked and yelped, nodding hurriedly as she turned to jog down the street. "Kero-chan! Wait for us! We should stick together!"

Kero was half a block ahead, hovering outside of a shop door. The place looked old, rundown, but there were lights on inside. Except it was the soft, flickering glow of candles, not the warm hum of electric lighting that was common in the rest of this town.

And Sakura wasn't oblivious to that ominous air, though her sense for it wasn't quite as acute as Sephiroth's. But she wrapped her arms around herself, slowing to a stop as she caught up with Kero.

"It went in here," he said, pointing towards the door. "I lost sight of the gho--" he broke off for a moment, looking at Sakura. "T-the kid, I mean! Lost sight of the kid. But his ball went straight through the door." Sakura let out a great big 'hmmmmm', bobbing gently up and down in the air, little arms crossed over his chest.

"I don't know, Sakura. This place gives me the chills," he admitted, that ominous air growing thicker around the shop. Magic was one thing, but he wasn't used to dealing with ghosts.

The little girl nodded slowly before letting out a little 'eek', and she stumbled right back into Sephiroth, eyes wide as she caught sight of the little boy pressed against the glass window, peering out at them with entirely black eyes.
