    MARCH 10, YEAR 7
    EARLY AFTERNOON
    @Faile Bashere

Nynaeve was finally able to leave that Light blinded safehouse and return to her own home, though she hadn't yet started work again. Well, not officially. She did stop by the clinic each day for an hour... or two. Or three. For as long as she managed before the pain in her side became too much and she ended up having to return home for a good sit down in front of the hearth.

Rather than go to the clinic that day, however, Nynaeve instead headed to Pandora Town, opening a gateway from her own lounge to an alleyway she knew would be empty. Rather than head towards Silverpool to visit Egwene and the children, Nynaeve made her way towards the residential area of Tavoie. She wasn't here to see Egwene, or Matrim, or Perrin. The person she had decided to see would most likely not expect her at all.

She'd been intending on spending some time with Faile ever since Christmas Day when the two women had joined the others at their home for the festivities. Any intention Nynaeve had had then of getting to know the younger girl better than she had in the Stone - which really hadn't been very well, since Faile had kept to Perrin's company or alone - had been overshadowed by the shocking proposal of marriage from Matrim to Egwene. Matrim! Asking Egwene to marry him! Nynaeve had been convinced she was in some kind of dream.

Either way, Nynaeve had had difficulty finding the time since. Between the amount of work she piled on her plate, to spending time with Haytham, to babysitting the twins on the occasions she was needed, she hadn't been able to fit in going to see Faile anyway. And then... well, and then she'd got nearly killed. That had been something of an inconvenience that had delayed everything she'd wanted to do.

And so, she had decided to go that day. She had no work to do, and nothing else to do. Why not see Faile? She had asked Perrin for the girl's address, and then she headed out without any further ado before she could be delayed again.

Walking was a little bit of a chore, her side aching terribly and the fact that she was in some pain evident from the way she favoured one side over the other, but she strode along with as much purpose as usual, refusing to be slowed by something as annoying as a not quite fully healed stab wound.

Reaching the correct door, Nynaeve stopped outside it, adjusting her blue gown for a moment before she lifted one hand and knocked firmly three times. She was about to impatiently knock again after a few seconds when the door opened, and she found herself looking at the taller form of the young Saldaean woman who had so captured Perrin Aybara's heart.

"Faile," Nynaeve said by way of greeting. Her voice was brisk, though not unfriendly. "You don't mind my sudden appearance, I hope?" Too bad for her if she did mind, Nynaeve had come all the way here and wouldn't be shooed away by Faile minding. "Are you busy today?"

Faile did not often have a day off that she spent to herself but Perrin was busy and she didn't really have any other friends. There were a few people in her department that she was friendly with but not to the point where she would want to spend her day off with them. So instead the dark haired woman had been boring. She had cleaned her apartment, looked over all of her knives, and had even managed to go through a few files of cold cases to try and pick apart any new details.

Of course she wasn't supposed to be working on her day off but since Perrin was busy, she had very little to occupy her time with. There was the odd thought that she would stop by the smith's regardless of what he might have said, just to see how he was doing. And likely distract him. That would be the primary focus, though Faile could make it seem like she was there for some other reason. Like bringing him lunch. Every man liked to eat and Perrin was certainly no different.

With that thought firmly in her head the dark haired woman had changed into a nicer set of clothing. Dark riding skirts and a nice light green blouse. She had even put in the little hair ornaments that Perrin had made her for Christmas. It had taken her a few moments to figure out what she was actually doing with the things but she had managed to pin her hair up with them. That was what mattered, right?

She had been checking on the placement of the ornament when there was a knock on her door. Perhaps Perrin had decided to come over after all? Faile answered the door hoping that the smith had decided to put off a bit of work to spend at least lunch with her. Except it wasn't Perrin on the other side of her front door, it was one of the Aes Sedai.

At least she managed to have a polite smile on her lips instead of something entirely too... eager. The one in front of her was the newer Aes Sedai. "Nynaeve Sedai." Why was one of the Sisters at her front door? She knew that both women had grown up with Perrin, so it was a little difficult to know how to act around them in Pandora. Would nothing matter? Would it matter more? "No, I'm not busy. How can I help you?" Maybe there was something she needed. Once she was gone, Faile could go about what she wanted to do.

A small smile touched the corners of Nynaeve's lips at the title that came from the younger woman. It was always nice when someone knew exactly what the Great Serpent ring - on a different finger to that of an Accepted - meant, which had only previously been the case with Berelain. Unlike with Berelain, however, Nynaeve waved a hand in a dismissive fashion.

"Just Nynaeve is fine," she said. "Titles mean nothing here, remember?" She hadn't said the same thing to Berelain. As far as she was concerned, that woman could continue politely spouting Nynaeve Sedai until she was blue in the face; Nynaeve liked hearing at least that little amount of humility from the woman.

The question was an expected one, and Nynaeve wasted no time in answering. "I came to see you, as a matter of fact," she explained, in that same brisk tone that had at least a little to do with the aching pain in her side. "I hardly got to speak to you at all over Christmas; much less than I would have liked, and we barely had any time to talk at the Stone either." Provided the younger woman had at least come from a time during or after their stay in Tear. If she came from before, it would at least have explained the girl's caginess.

Taking a breath, folding her arms so that she could surreptitiously feel at her side where even through the fabric of her dress she could feel the puckered skin of the half-healed wound, Nynaeve offered the younger, taller woman a tight smile.

"If you aren't busy today, I don't suppose I could come in?" She could have barged her way in and the girl would likely not have protested at all since she was Aes Sedai, but Nynaeve did have some manners. "I'd like a seat." She didn't know if Perrin had mentioned the attack on Nynaeve to Faile - and she hoped not; the last thing she needed was everyone and their bloody mother to know she'd been so easily overpowered! - but that was the closest she'd come to admitting that she was in pain.

Titles mean nothing here, remember? That was supposedly how things worked in Pandora but Faile was no fool. Aes Sedai would always be Aes Sedai, no matter who they had been before and no matter the world they were currently in now. Faile expected to see and hear the White Tower fall from her lips. She would not let her guard down only to be surprised later. Faile trusted the White Tower to a certain degree, which meant that she was going to be respectful to Nynaeve, but that didn't mean that she was going to fall face first into plots that she wanted nothing to do with either.

The problem was Perrin. Perhaps he would always be a problem because he was forever blind to the ways his friends could cause him trouble. The Aes Sedai! The Dragon Reborn! The only one who had seemed somewhat safe was Matrim Cauthon but the bloody man had gone and made himself a bloody Warder! So none of Perrin's friends from home were exactly safe, no matter what Pandora said on the matter. Wouldn't have been the first time Aes Sedai ignored the laws of the land they were in, would it?

But the brunette was here to see Faile, which changed things slightly. It also made her a touch defensive. There were obvious reasons of course. Faile was engaged to Perrin and that meant things in a small village like Two Rivers. It also might have meant things if Perrin had advised any of his friends about his vision. The one where Faile and Perrin were the rulers of Saldaea! Exactly the sort of thing Aes Sedai liked to put their fingers in. No, it all just built up in Faile's head even as Nynaeve requested to come inside to speak.

"Of course, come in." Thankfully Faile kept a neat and tidy apartment. Everything had it's place despite the fact that she was decently minimal in her decorations. Nothing gaudy or too crowded. It was a place that Faile could feel decent about inviting someone important in. Nynaeve certainly counted in that crowd no matter how the next words fell from her lips. If she was going to make demands in that sort of tone then there was no way Faile was going to treat her any differently than an Aes Sedai.

Still the dark haired woman closed the door behind the Sister and led the way to the living room where there was plenty of seating. A small couch and two arm chairs, neatly arranged around a coffee table and pointed at the tv. A room that was apparently pretty standard in every home in Pandora Town with a tv. Faile had wanted to blend in with the population, so she had gotten one. From time to time she'd watch tv on it, but mostly when Perrin helped her figure out the channels on the remote.

"What would you like to talk about, Nynaeve Sedai?" Faile was going to at least get straight to the point because she didn't like surprises. It would be better for her to at least know the true purpose of this visit.

The caginess in the younger woman's eyes was hard to miss, for all that she was perfectly polite. Nynaeve wasn't really sure she could blame her; there had once been a time when Nynaeve had hated Aes Sedai (and even sort of been of the popular but unspoken opinion in the backwaters that they were Darkfriends) and even though she was now one of them, with the ring on her finger and a right to the shawl, she still didn't trust half of Aes Sedai as far as she could throw them. More than half.

But although she couldn't quite blame Faile for her wariness, it was also a little... well... offensive. Nynaeve was hardly like typical Aes Sedai and she had absolutely no interest in the kinds of plots and schemes that ran rampant through the White Tower. She was a sister of the Yellow Ajah; her only desire to be Aes Sedai was to Heal the sick and injured. There was still her original intention, too, to protect those innocents who were unwittingly caught up in Tower and Aes Sedai strings. She hadn't been able to protect the Two Rivers youths, not before it was too late and all four of them had been changed beyond recognition.

And what about you? How much have you been changed by the White Tower?

She ignored that thought, and merely smiled as Faile invited her in. She doubted the girl wanted to, but being a Borderlander, she was not about to refuse a sister of the Tower anything, because in the Borderlands, the White Tower was respected, almost revered. Nynaeve could probably have made ridiculous demands and Faile would have obeyed them.

And that was one of the many reasons she did not even trust Aes Sedai herself.

Seating herself on the couch with a little more stiffness to her movements than she wished to be there, she raised an eyebrow as the girl once again used her title. "Nynaeve," she said firmly, with a touch of impatience. The irony, of how many times she had wanted people to call her Nynaeve Sedai without any doubt or scepticism over her age, and now she just wanted this young woman to stop. "How are you faring in Pandora, Faile?" she asked. "Are things going well?"

The Aes Sedai came into her apartment and took a seat on her couch. Faile herself sat on the other end of the couch, if only because there was no other kinds of seating in her apartment. She made a mental note that such things might be a good idea... if she had more space. One bedroom, one kitchen, one bathroom, and a decidedly small living room. It was also something she could afford comfortably with her pay, which was an important part of living in this basically modern world. All sorts of new things to balance though Faile made sure to live within her means.

Nynaeve. Faile's eyebrows raised before the dark haired woman had a chance to school her features. Aes Sedai were not to be called by their names, not in that manner, and to do so would be extremely rude in Faile's eyes. This was going to make her uncomfortable, no matter what the other woman thought she was doing. Then the conversation turned to something a little more natural and Faile answered without hesitation. "Well. Better than expected, actually." Truth be told it had been a rather large adjustment for Faile but she was good at adapting. She had to be.

"I'm an investigator with the DoI. Steady pay and steady work, though the cases can be a little unsettling from time to time." That was the truth of it and Faile had no reason to say otherwise. She did speak as if she were giving a report more than having a conversation but that was because Faile would never forget that the woman on the other end of the couch was an Aes Sedai. Ever. Things probably would have been smoother if Perrin had been around. Perhaps she could wiggle in some sort of request to come with the smith. Faile would have been much more comfortable with that.

"Have you been able to adjust as well.... Nynaeve?" There was a little choke at the end of the word. As if Faile had bitten off the next word and swallowed it instead of saying. The dark haired woman would have seemed like she had just done the most uncomfortable thing in the world like stripping naked in front of a leering army, instead of simply dropping the honorific off of Nynaeve's name but she tried. Her eyes just felt like they would bug out of her face in the next few seconds if she had to do it again anytime soon.

The apartment was small, but cosy. Much smaller than the house Nynaeve lived in by herself, but sometimes Nynaeve wondered if she herself wouldn't prefer something nice and small like this. Likely better than having so much space to yourself, feeling like space was just being wasted. She had two extra bedrooms that were getting no use, though she had bought a couple of cribs for one of them for any time Mat and Egwene wanted her to take the twins overnight.

"An investigator?" Nynaeve made a thoughtful noise. She wasn't quite sure what this Department of Intelligence did, but she assumed it had something to do with solving crimes. Something along that vein, at least. She eyed the younger woman appraisingly for a moment. What was it that Perrin had mentioned about Faile in the Stone of Tear? It had been a long time ago for Nynaeve, but that had sadly been the last time she'd seen him until Pandora. "A curious career choice for a merchant's daughter."

There wasn't any accusation in her voice, though her eyebrows did quirk a little questioningly. As far as she was aware merchants' children were not taught the skillsets required to be of use in any kind of criminal investigations. A career involving numbers, sums and accounts seemed more likely.

When the question was turned around back on her - and she did not fail to notice the way Faile almost choked at leaving out her honorific - Nynaeve smiled, putting plenty of warmth in the expression. She wasn't here to make the girl feel uncomfortable, as she clearly seemed to be. If she was going to be marrying Perrin - though Nynaeve distinctly remembered them already being wed back home - then Nynaeve wanted to actually be able to get to know her and to have Faile get to know her in return. She wanted them to be... friends.

"I've adjusted well, I think, though the whole concept behind this place is... a little disturbing," she said, before wrinkling her nose. "I discovered that the clinic in Misty Hollow was founded by a different me, can you imagine it? I know for a fact I haven't been here before, but there is my name, plain as day on a plaque next to the front doors." She shook her head with a sigh. If she thought about it too much she still felt uncomfortable.

"I'm heading that clinic now. Seemed only right since it's apparently mine anyway." She let out a small laugh, before taking a breath, wincing a little at the soreness in her side from the still not quite healed stab wound. "I don't suppose I could trouble you for a cup of tea, Faile?" Her voice was polite and warm enough, though it held no doubt that the younger woman wouldn't get her a drink. And not just because she was Aes Sedai; Nynaeve just expected everyone to do what she wanted.

Nynaeve Sedai seemed surprised that Faile had become an investigator. She also didn't seem to know alot about Faile herself which suggested she was from a point in time that they likely hadn't met. Or had barely met. Perrin was from before Faile had been, so he had known very little at that point, and all of her thoughts in that direction were confirmed moments later when the brunette brought up the fact she was a merchant's daughter. The dark haired woman couldn't help the slight bit of amusement that appeared on her face. She had used that story with the smith to make sure that he wouldn't be wary of her and wouldn't be wary of her father, who was quite the intimidating sort of man.

"I'm afraid that was a lie. A small one, mostly for my own safety." There was no point in hiding it here. There was nothing here that technically mattered. Who she was and who her family was could not be used against her and it didn't matter from anyone who was not from the Westlands. Besides Perrin already knew the reality of the situation so it was likely that the smith would spill his guts without realizing it given the right questioning. "I'm third in line for the Saldaea throne and my father is one of the more well known generals." Of a certain sort. Bashere was a name that was known along the borderlands. Would Nynaeve Sedai know it as well?

The other woman was smiling though and Faile had to hope she wasn't stepping out of turn by trying to accommodate the woman's request. Instead she listened to what Nynaeve had to say and stayed silent, taking in the details along with all the other little bits. She lived in Misty Hollow. She had been here before. That was certainly an interesting tidbit because it was the same as Faile herself. There had been a few people who had said similar things but the dark haired woman hadn't questioned too many of them because it seemed like an odd thing to ask. A personal thing to talk about and Faile often didn't feel like answering any questions in that vein.

"Of course." Tea was easy enough in a modern world. The dark haired woman got up and moved to the kitchen, though it was only a few feet away from where the Aes Sedai was seated. It was easy enough to pull out two mugs, fill and start the electric kettle, and get the tea itself ready. She used leaves instead of bags, small delicate devices that held the tea in the hot water without letting it spill everywhere, and then moved back to the couch to wait for the kettle to be done. It would only be a few minutes but Nynaeve would likely understand that at this point.

"I was actually..." Faile trailed off for a moment, unsure if she wanted to talk about this either. After all, it was personal in many ways because she had been here before and had been with Perrin. Complicated to say the least. Except there really wasn't anyone to talk to about this because she didn't know them. Faile still didn't know Nynaeve Sedai but they knew the same people and they were from the same world. If anything it would be easier to talk to her instead of someone else. "I've been here before as well. Perrin use to live with me, apparently, and it was difficult to navigate things. He knew things I had not told him and..." Well, there had been plenty of a difference between herself and the other Faile that Faile didn't want to really think about it either. It was far too complicated. She trailed off again, lost in her thoughts, only to be interrupted by the kettle. The dark haired woman offered a smile before standing again and moving to the kitchen to make their tea.
