    @Alex Fierro

Things had been quite for him in the weeks since he got into treatment. He lost his job but Spider gave him money, way more than he needed, so he didn´t had to worry about buying food or clothes or other things he needed. Still he tried to only take what he really needed, keeping a stash of savings in case his generous friend simply vanished or forgot about him. Better not to be too depended on it, even if it saved him from a great worry. Well, he still had this deal going on with Rikki, where she brought him nice stuff from the ocean and he made jewelry from it. Tinkered around with other bits he collected on his walks. Maybe he should expand on that.
But this was for later. Daniel had post-phoned any bigger plans for the future until after he knew he was better, fearing his careful nurtured hopes might get crushed by any bad news. And still he refused to see a healer, stick to the pills. They seemed to work after all. No more really bad attacks and the ones he got could be put off with the pain killers. So he was actual fine. Ok, maybe he had to change to a new set of pills every other time, because the others stopped working the way they should, but that had been expected. The lump in his brain was no easy case.
What did threw him off again was when the whole world changed. First off he didn´t get what had happened at all, how it could be real. Even once it sunk it that this was how the world was now it still scared him. And then there had been the whole thing with Alex, stressing him even more. That he hadn´t got a real bad attack in all this was a small miracle. Now there was no real reason to worry, but he did draw back to the their new house, his room, staying in, trying to cope. Dozing, mainly. Sleepiness seemed to be a side effect of the new pills.
It probably was sad to watch him grow weary of the outside just because it was different now and he had enough on his plate. Hard to memorize a whole new landscape if he was drowsy half the time and had trouble grasping the information he needed. So he stayed inside, silent, giving his best to not bother Alex with his presence, either tinkering around with the bits he still had or trying himself at sketching. He lacked inside-hobbies. Being in low spirits and dozing didn´t change much of his street reflexes though. When Alex sneaked up on his bed he might not notice until she was almost atop of him, but then he bolted up and dropped off the bed dazzled. “What the heck are you doing there, cousin?” he asked from the ground, rubbing his elbow.

....sometimes, the memories got to her at night. The feeling of being trapped, of being... static. Sometimes, the memories broke her. It was never the fighting that she had an issue with. People died. Sometimes, they died because of her. Alex could live with that. She was an einherjar. Killing people was what they did. Generally, it was other einherjar, but sometimes it was people. Or giants. Either way, the blood and the flesh and killing? Never the issue. But it was the feeling of... wrongness, of something sitting there, anathema to her soul, that made her want to cry. Sometimes, when she couldn't take it anymore, she'd get out of bed, and just... shift. Just to remember that she could. Move between forms so quickly that no one could tell what form he was, just a fluid blob of ever-shifting light.

Day wasn't helpful, either. He was just as mopey as Alex was, which was annoying, because Alex was the moody one in this house. And there was only so much pottery she could make before the atmosphere in the house got to her to. So she was sick of it. She couldn't really dye her hair anymore, but there was another option. Another head of hair. She picked the colours carefully, ones that would work with the bland rags Day tended to call clothing, and, since, a) he wouldn't agree if she asked b) it was better to ask for forgiveness than permission and, c) it was more fun this way, Alex waited until Day seemed asleep, before sneaking up on him with hair dye, water, and a bucket. Or, and a towel.

When she got caught, Alex just smiled her Loki-grin, and shrugged. "Dying your hair," she replied casually. "Now get back on the bed."

It wasn't that Day was in bad spirits just to annoy Alex, he didn't had that much control over it. Things needed to pend back into normalcy, the meds had to adjust right, all that simply needed time. Until then he really tried to make it easier for both of them, doing what he could to feel better, not bother her with complaints, keep somewhat close to his usual day schedule… well, there was only so much avoiding you could do while living together.
Not that he ever got angry at Alex, took his moods out on her or so much as pushed his problems on anyone. Not even when he had his own nightmares to deal with. So when she seemed to have set her mind on dying his hair out of sudden, he raised a brow on that but didn't asked why. Just one of these Alex things he'd grown used to and actually it was nice, a good distraction.
„Strip off or real dye?” he asked back, curious. And after a glance at his clothes - could get dirty - and his bed - free of sketches and tinkering bits - following her command and sitting next to Alex, only keeping a little bit of distance to indicate there was a bit more to sort out before she got at it. „If there's any red planned in, you can walk right out again.” Wrong memories attached to that, things he didn't wanted replaying in his head anymore than it already did. „And you're not going to cut off so much as a single strand.”

Alex shrugged. "Real dye. It'll come out eventually, and I can get it out pretty easily, but you'll have to let me know when you want it out," she replied. Unlike Alex's own hair, which she had never bleached, but had considered when the colour refused to take, Day's hair was pretty much the best colour already for dying, pale and soft. So no red... considering what he had told her, Alex could understand that. That would be alarming.

"What about blue.... and maybe purple?" Alex asked. She knew that dying hair was a big thing, and since she couldn't do it by surprise anymore, she might as well make sure Day was happy about it. Or as happy as he could get, anyway. "What is it with you and your hair, anyway? If you let me trim it a bit, it'd look way better."

There was the hint of a smile spreading as Alex told him how it was real dye – because he had no intention to get rid off it soon. The opposite! In Republic he always had to use strip-off one so he could change fast, never staying the same, unable to be tracked down. Neither had the bright colors he was sure Alex would use been available too him. Daniel knew his hair was great for dye too, though it had become a kind of a trademark, a rare thing together with his natural tan, the blue eyes and the oddly asianish features.
He just hadn't thought to do it for fun, without needing to hide, only because he wanted to. But now that Alex had brought it up and wouldn't back off anyway, there was a glimmer of excitement in his eyes. It was way better than being alone with his thoughts. They got to spend some time together. “Sounds great.” Not that he could imagine blue and purple, but he spouted a smile that said he trusted Alex to make it work. Admittedly, she had way more of a fashion sense than he, since all he did in terms of getting dressed was grabbing a clean shirt and trousers from their respective pile without caring if it went together.
At the question his slow-building simple happiness wavered, because... well, it was quite impossible to ask him anything without stumbling over his past. “It's a statement. Pretty much everyone in the poor sectors wore it long.” Alex should be glad he never had been a fan of ponytails or braids, stuffing it under a cap if it'd bother him. “To show that you weren't to be associated with the military forces, since they would make you cut it short.” Sure, he wasn't there anymore, but he wanted to keep to the little things that had influenced him. They made up who he was.
Though, after a long moment of hesitation, he added: “If it stays past my shoulders...” half an permission to trim it, if she wanted to take it as that. But she would already dye it, a little bit of trimming on top wouldn't hurt him. Even if it meant letting someone with sharp objects handle around in his back, where he couldn't see it and had to trust that there were no bad intentions. Albeit Alex of all people would've had better methods and chances than this in all the time they lived together.

Alex nodded, running her fingers through Day's hair while she thought. She had brought the dye up with her, because she believed in preparedness. It was important when you were ambushing someone with hairdye. She also had scissors, because she carried them almost everywhere. Well, when dealing with Day. "Got it," she replied. Alex also understood statements. She had always tried to make herself a statement, a way to show that she wouldn't be controlled by anyone, or anything. Generally, it worked.

"Stay still," Alex warned. Though she knew that she wouldn't cut him, his hair was an entirely different matter. If he jerked her elbow, he might end up with a bowl cut, and then she'd have to kill him for being a disgrace to fashion. She'd prefer to avoid it. "Its only going to be a trim, to tidy it up a bit." With that, she got to work, cutting off split ends and getting rid of knots.

It was odd, having someone caress his hair like that. The last one to do so had been his Mum and that had been years... June never cared much about this little affections. Tess had been more of a sister to him, usual only touching him to threat his various injuries. Strange yet nice, how casual she went at it. Took away some of his worry, albeit it was unlikely that Alex would hurt him in any way. Daniel had watched her handle pottery more than enough to know she'd only destroy with intention.
Nice not being in the way of one of her fits for once, but on the creating side. And dying longer hair was easier if you had someone to help – he didn't intended to leave all the work to her. The trimming he'd left in her hands though. Shouldn't be hard, he always had cared for his hair, so it wasn't tangled or dirty and while he had usual cut strands with a knife, it had been good, sharp ones, so the edge weren't too frayed.
“Alright” he agreed to the holding still and the trimming alike. Despite him being more a energized person that needed things to do, sitting perfectly still for prolonged periods of time wasn't an issue. How much long hours he hadn't spend watching his family go by their life without him, collecting information. Good that Alex couldn't see his face from that angle, since he preferred to keep his moody episodes to himself. Pushing it away hurt less than facing the reason. But not all he could repress, tensed up whenever she got near the scar at his neck. Not that she'd be able to make his head worse just by touching it, the way bad attacks felt even a scissor rammed in there wouldn't make much of a difference, but well... bad memories. Anyone else doing that would get their hands smacked away and some unfriendly words, if not a knife in their face.

Alex sat, trimming and brushing as she went. It was calming, almost. Something easy, for a change. It was mostly just maintenance, which, not matter what, you eventually needed to cut some ends. It took a while, but, eventually, she finished. "Take a look in the mirror," he said, moving his stuff to the side. "See if you want me to do anything else before I dye it."

Daniel wished there’d been more of this little moments with his family, small comforting ones to remember in the darker times. To have them now was nice, though he doubted that had been Alex intention and knew better than saying or showing anything. “Given how I’ve simply cut it through with a knife whenever it got too long, I trust you that it’ll look better this way” was all he commented, only checking to see if he’d still be able to pull it up in a bun or ponytail. Since that worked, he let it spill down on his shoulders again, glancing back at Alex. “All set. Can I help with the dye?” Multiple colors were more complicate to do than just dipping his head in cheap wash-out dye. “Why not dye your hair too? Green with roots a statement too – your alliance to grass, maybe?” The boy grinned at the cheap joke.

Alex looked at him. In fact, he Looked at him, and shook his head. "With your style? No. You'd just muck it up. You can...choose your colours," Alex said, as if he was granting him a great favor, instead of just invoking common sense. At his joke, he slapped him lightly across the head. "I like green. There doesn't always have to be meaning behind it. Also, he and him now. Just by the way."

“Purple and blue, which you choose by the way, but they're alright – and I've dyed my hair before with all sorts of stuff before. Having the cheap strip off stuff from the Republic look like it was natural was quite an procedure.” Especially if he had to do it in some back alley, with barely any light or clean water. So Daniel certainly could handle some dye. Maybe not so it'd look fantastic or creative with multiple colors blending together, but the basic sure worked.
At the slap he flinched, punching Alex equally light in the shoulder. “No hitting the head, cousin. Unless you want me back in the hospital.” He meant that serious, had a fall from some rough shoving almost taken him out back in the Republic and while he was on meds, better not to risk it. Albeit he wished he'd be able to react more to this, missed all the physical activity. The note on the changed pronouns Daniel took without any comment, filing it away. He hadn't got it wrong a single time ever since he moved in.

"Hey, I gave you veto," Alex shot back, but he pulled out the blue and purple nevertheless, preparing the workspace. At the mention of cheap dye, Alex made a face, and sighed. "Piece of advice, Danny? If you're dyeing your hair for pleasure, don't try and make it look natural. Dye never does, no matter the quality. But... well, I'm surprised by your hair. If you've been using cheap dye, it should be in way worse condition," he admitted, slightly impressed.

Alex gave Day a Look of incredulity at the slap back. "I know my own strength," he replied. "Besides, that should've barely mussed your hair..." Alez's manner turned instantly suspicious, and he straightened up almost imperceptibly. "Day, is there something you aren't telling me?"

Alex didn't had to look at him with that face. This wasn't his first time to use dye, no matter the quality and occasion. “It wasn't for pleasure. It was so they'd have some more options to choose from for making up faces to put on my wanted adds.” he replied back, sarcastically, as of course it had been a matter of disguise, something his life depended on. “And it wasn't real dye. Republic had those strip-off colors, that I could work in within 10 minutes, no roots, no odd coloring, no streaks, no plastered strands, and get out within 2 with a special cleaning spray or water, depending on the brand. Barely kept it on for some hours and only when I couldn't get around being seen.” Apart from him using it rarely, they clearly had some different opinions on what cheap dye meant. “Don't they have that at your place?”
The hit of course hadn't hurt him and he trusted Alex to know what he did. Nice of him to ask too, but it was about his health and that topic got him to block of just as surely as Loki did with Alex. No. I'm fine. I'm taking the meds.” Which was all the answer he'd given whenever asked through the past months. No word about the progress or the symptoms he experienced or how he felt with it – though his whole demeanor of refusing to talk probably told enough about how it wasn't all good. But it pulled his mood down and he was having none of that, holding Alex gaze for some moments, almost glaring. “Let's start or we'll need all day for this.”

"Yeah, those totalitarian governments can be so picky when it comes to aesthetic," Alex deadpanned. Though that dye sounded impressive. Alex knew kids back home that would love to get their hands on some of that, even if it was just a chance to look different, pretend to be someone different, someone normal for a moment. Personally, he liked loud and proud. "No, not really. Must be a future thing."

Alex shrugged. He knew better then to push when it came to Day and health. He was pretty sure that the other boy was lying, but he wasn't going to ask. They both had topics that they avoided. It was simple enough. "Okay, lie down," Alex directed, getting him to lie down with his hair hanging off the bed, over a bucket of water. Then he started to massage the dye in gently.

Alex sarcastic comment got him to smile again. Albeit the wanted ads had been fun to watch over the years, as they tried something new every month, every week, after each new thing he pulled – if they got lucky based on his latest disguise, but mostly guessing, giving him all race, eye and hair color combination they could think of. Not once did they get it right. “One thing they did right then.” Wasn't much he could say that about when it came to Republic.
Still a bit taken aback by the harmless question about his health, he followed the directions quietly, knowing how to place himself best so this would work out, one knee pulled up to provide some more balance. The healthy one, since there were moments where he couldn't stand the prosthetic, another thing he never showed. Alex working on his hair slowly calmed him though, just from the known movement and the care not to hurt him.
There was trust too, a rare thing to allow anyone so close without some weariness on his part – though he did glance at Alex more than at the ceiling, a smirk slowly spreading on his lips. Upside-down his green curls looked even more like a patch of grass gone wild. Daniel liked it. “There were non-permanent tattoos too, all shapes and colors. More a fashion thing in Denver and Frisco than L.A., but I guess you would've liked them.” It wasn't his to plaster a statement across his skin like that, unless it was meant to make his features less recognizable, but Alex sure could've pulled them off well.

"A whole government, and the thing that they get right is dye," Alex said, rolling his eyes. Then again, the government he had known hadn't been much better with the whole thing, but at least they hadn't shot homeless kids in the street. Yet. They hadn't started shooting homeless kids in the street...officially. They were fine with letting them die, though. As long as they didn't see the bodies.

    But that didn't matter here.

Alex finished massaging the blue dye through, and started applying the purple to different strands. He frowned, tilting his head in thought. "...eh," he replied, shrugging. "Fake tattoos can be cool, but you might as well commit. Well, here. Otherwise they're meaningless."

It probably had been more scientists then the government, but he really tried to see some good things. The Colonies hadn't been much better, the faults simply hidden behind lights and cleaned-up fronts. Every place had those wrongs, he was sure they existed here too. Just that he lacked the energy to fight that too, while his health was fluctuating and no one had it especially cut out for him. There was enough he could worry about.
“Sure, get stabbed with an probably unhygienic needle some thousand times, for something I can't even change again? No thanks.” With his utter fear of anything needle-like coming close to him he'd have a hard time committing to that. “Also, they were forbidden. Military standards and all.” For him out too because it would've give him a recognizable feature, which wasn't that useful if you tried not to get caught.

Alex sighed quietly, rolling his eyes. "The more I hear about your world, the more it sucks," he muttered to himself, kneading the colour into Day's hair. This dye would stay in for a couple of months, or even longer, depending on how he treated his hair, or how often he washed it.

What was there to say? Republic was anything but a lovely place – just his home, despite everything. And it felt odd to have the need to defend it now, when he had fought it all the years, knew the good bits weren't thanks to the system, but the people he'd met. Also there was only so much to talk about before it got into his personal story, which would ruin his mood. Daniel didn't want this, because it was nice having Alex here, doing this. So he stayed quiet and just focused on enjoying the moment – the dye he sure would keep a good while, among other things because he appreciated the effort.
