The apartment was in darkness, and at first sight, it looked like the setting of a struggle, with a broken lamp on the floor, the glass from the bulb twinkling in the pale moonlight from the windows. A chair was overturned, papers and newspaper clippings scattered about. The silence was only broken by the sound of heavy breathing and sobs, which came from the apartment's bathroom, which was also without light.

Why hadn't she been there? Why didn't she stop it?

    -earlier-

The door slammed to as Trish walked into the apartment, dropping her jacket. From the expression on her face, anyone, if they were home, would’ve been able to tell she was pissed. She hated cutting her vigilante work short to go to a shitty job she hated at Pandora Studios – she'd had enough of acting like someone else for a lifetime or more. But she didn’t have the finances she used to and she wasn’t about to let Jess do all the work.

She said hello to Avril (she figured Kayser had gone out with Jess) and, after sifting through her notes, soon fell asleep in the chair, a brief rest before she had to put on her face and smile.

That was when everything went to hell.

Trish awoke with a start, violently pushing herself from the chair, which toppled over. She stumbled into the nearby table, the lamp crashing to the ground. She hardly noticed any of this, not with the images she now had in her head. It was like someone had invaded her mind and placed new memories...ones she had no recollection of living.

But it couldn’t be real, right? I mean, she was here...it had to be someone, probably with powers, out to get her...

“Please, please, don’t be real,” Trish choked out, stumbling against the wall, tears running down her cheeks as the memory became stronger and more vivid, playing over and over no matter how much she bashed her fist against her head or pulled at her scalp. She couldn't keep a rational frame of mind, with how her chest heaved from the pain - it was like someone had stuck a knife through her and was twisting it, slowly.

It was the same each time; she saw herself enter her mother’s apartment, dressed in a similar way to how she did now as a vigilante. Her mother was set in the chair, but Trish knew something was off before she’d even remembered the worst part, seeing her own hesitance as she entered the apartment, the door already broken open. It was like looking through a camera lens at her own life.

This Trish called out gently to her mother a few times, each word laced with more fear than the last, but Dorothy was silent in the chair, leant slightly to one side. What she saw next was the image that would haunt her forever.

A scream echoed in the dark, and Trish still wasn't sure whether it was the memory or herself the first or hundredth time she saw it. Her mom, covered from head to toe in blood, gashes slicing deep past her clothes and into her flesh. Her mouth had been duct taped, so she couldn't even have screamed for help. More red covered her chest and blouse, leading up to a gash in her neck.

Her last moments must've been a fucking nightmare.

“This is a joke! THIS IS A FUCKING SICK JOKE! Mom...” Trish screamed, then cried, enraged and openly sobbing now.

She barely made it to the bathroom in time. And, by the time she’d called Jess, letting out a weak and feeble sob before cutting off the call, she’d vomited or cried her own bodyweight, and more. Strands of hair stuck to her clammy face as she stared into the abyss, rocking back and forth.

I should have been there...I should have been there...I'm so sorry, mom...

Jess was sitting on some grating, with legs dangling off the edge and her eyes peering through binoculars. This was supposed to be a quick case, something for a little extra cash now that there was another person living with her - Trish was working as well but even so, Jess was fine picking up some extra cases here and there.

She was ready to pick up and go when her phone rang, the photograph and name popping up caused her to immediately pick up, hearing sobs that almost shattered her heart, barely getting her name in before the call disconnected. Shoving everything into her bag, and making sure Kayser was still with her, Jess abandoned her post. When it came down to it, she would always choose Trish over her cases.

Arriving home as fast as she could, she pulled open the door to semi-darkness, the apartment looked as though a fight had broken out. Worry etched deep in her eyes as she looked around, bag dropped as she strode towards the bathroom. That was where those sobs came from, the cries that made her heart ache and she didn't even knock on the door.

There was no time for it.

"Trish, I'm here." She didn't turn on the light, going immediately to her side and just being there. "What happened?"

Her breathes were staggered, her eyes glassed over. By the time Jess came and found her, couldn’t remember the last time she’d blinked, as though shutting her eyes just for once second would show her that god fucking awful image of her mother.

Trish didn’t react to Jess being there at first; it was like she was frozen, a mannequin from the studios. But after what seemed like an eternity, she spoke, pulling her teeth from her bottom lip which was covered in deep red splits, though thankfully not bleeding.

“Jess...she’s dead,” she whispered, voice hoarse. Saying it out loud and admitting it, a dam broke inside her and she shut her eyes tight, beginning to sob once more as she leaned into Jess. “She’s dead...and there’s nothing I can fucking do to stop it.”

Jess huddled down, reaching with the back of her hand to feel clammy skin beneath. Had something happened while she was doing her vigilante work?

When Trish spoke, there was a wave of confusion. Who was dead? "Who?" If they'd been back in New York then the private investigator would have had a better idea - but this damned world it was hard when things were shifting and constantly changing.

Still, she wrapped her arm around Trish who was leaning into her, holding her tightly to make sure she knew that Jess was here and she wasn't going anywhere.

She didn’t want to say anymore, didn’t want to face reality. She sniffled, Mom...” Trish could feel the bile rising in her throat, and swallowed thickly. “I thought it was a nightmare...or some shithead I’ve been tracking having mind powers...” She laughed bitterly, a brief noise that turned into a cough. As if anything could be that simple.

“But it’s too real.” Another tear fell down her face, “I see her there...she’s in her apartment...and, fuck--” She lurched forward, retching, but nothing came out.

That explained everything and while Jess and Dorothy didn't always get along, she was still Trish's mother, and she had given Jess a home after the death of her family. Sure it was for selfish reasons, but she had gotten a sister out of it.

This was Pandora and all its fuckery . Goddammit.

She knew what it was like to lose a mother. And while Dorothy was a piece of work, Jess couldn't say she wanted her dead.

Silently she wrapped an arm around Trish, just holding her. No words were needed, because what could she say? Nothing would make this any better. "Trish, I'm sorry." Of course it wasn't her fault but still. She needed to say that.

She didn’t need Jess to say anything; just her being there was enough, but she appreciated her comfort, and squeezed the dark haired woman’s hand at her words.

“I wish I could have been there...I should have been there,” her voice had an edge; the kind it always had when Trish wanted something, but it was weak, with no drive behind it. “I don’t even know how it happened...she was just...just...there.”

She was tired, but didn’t want to sleep as this would only keep tormenting her. Although a small part of her wanted to sleep and never wake up. “I don’t understand how this is happening.”

Jess let Trish talk, deciding against some of her usual sarcasm - she knew Trish needed this, needed to speak and let it all out and Jess interjecting with life goes on without us there, because to them we never left, wouldn't help.

"That's this place for you. It's not the first to torment and I doubt it'll be the last." Her husky voice was quiet, with its own edge as if wishing she could confront those who created this world and tell them to just quit it, especially to someone so important to her. "We could do something for her, like maybe-"

Jess wasn't even sure. What did you do when a parent died while you were in a different world? Frustrated with herself and her lack of ideas, that didn't stop her from pulling Trish closer to her, holding her close and hopefully keeping some of those dark demons at bay.

It didn’t really help, knowing Pandora was the reason for this fucking revelation, or that her mom was still going to die at some point in the future. Maybe-maybe it wouldn’t happen, as long as she was here – she’d be okay. Alive. It was wishful thinking, something that couldn’t be proved, but it was the only thing she had.

She breathed in Jess’s scent, sighing. Trish appreciated her idea – especially after what she had done to Alisa, and how coldly she’d brushed off Jess’s pain after, throwing the cold, hard facts in her face. And now her mom had been murdered, just the same. She wondered if this was the universe’s way of telling her
    how badly she fucked up.

“Maybe a memorial, or just even...remembering her, somehow? She always loved anything that was all about her,” Trish laughed hollowly. She looked up at her best friend. “Jess…I really don’t deserve you sometimes.” At that, she shivered. It wasn’t because of the cold, more likely from losing all fluid in her body.

"She really did. Not to mention she was able to weather any sort of attention. It was always impressive." Jess replied softly. Though Jess hated that life, the stardom and glitz and glamour, because she knew what it could do to someone, she was always impressed with Dorothy.

Not all media attention was good and she was able to turn that around.

"I feel the same way about you sometimes." Jess's voice was thick with emotion, even as she reached over for a bottle of cool water, tinged with watermelon flavor. "You need to get fluid back into your system."
