It was probably the most cliche thing he could have been doing. Like, way, way, way up there in the list of cliches. But Noctis had never been the sort who could ignore anybody who needed help, even if he found himself complaining about the inconvenience every step of the way. But things had been crazy in Misty Hollow since the barrier fell, and helping out someone in a way that didn't involve fighting of spooks or monsters was kind of a relief.

The fact that Noctis was out and doing something was kind of a relief. He'd lost his way for a while there, unable to find the will to get out of bed most mornings. And as terrible as it was that the barrier had fallen, it had kicked Noctis into action, finding something to do and devote himself to in a world that had robbed him of all purpose in life.

    His purpose right now?

    Rescuing cats from trees.

It had been the quiet mewling of a small, too skinny cat that had drawn the man's attention up into the branches of an old and twisted tree. The cat's claws were extended, clinging to a branch, mewling pathetically as it clung and shook, tail whipping anxiously back and forth behind her. And Noct had thought about for all of two seconds warping up there to grab the cat and jump back down with her, but he didn't want to frighten it into falling out of the tree with a dagger slamming into the tree bark, or Noctis' sudden appearance alongside it.

That was why the man was now climbing carefully up the tree, testing each branch's strength before hauling himself up. It wasn't a hard tree to climb, with its branches thick and steady, spaced out well for feet and hands to always find a purchase without forcing the man to jump. But it was a big old tree, and Noctis' breath was short, the dark-haired man pausing to steady himself as he finally reached the cat's level.

It was an orange tabby cat that peered over at him, uncertain, still clinging to that branch as it swayed lightly in the afternoon breeze. Noctis smiled faintly as he pulled himself up once more, settling himself on the same branch that the cat was clinging to like death itself.

"That's a good cat," he said quietly, keeping his voice steady as he leaned forward, extending a hand, palm up, towards the kitty. The animal made no effort to move closer to him, though she did push forward with her head a touch, sniffing at his fingers. Man, if only Prompto could see him now.

But up here the branches were thinner, and Noctis wasn't entirely certain this one would hold his weight for too long. It sank down a bit under him as he edged forward, reaching out a hand for the cat. A sudden jolt and Noct reached forward instinctively, tugging the cat up into his arms, the poor thing hissing and squirming with that sudden jolt. He grit his teeth as her claws sank into his hand, drawing blood. "Calm down! Come on, I'm just trying to help you," he grumbled, wincing at the flash of pain over his hands.

In his other hand, a dagger appeared in a blue mist and, with not a moment's hesitation, Noctis threw it to the ground. He hadn't wanted to warp up the tree in fear of startling the cat, but the cat was already under his arm (scratching furiously) and he had no qualms about getting them both down as quickly as possible.

Only a blue after-image of Noct was left in the tree, as his body flickered and warped, following the path of the dagger back down to the ground. In the blink of an eye, he was crouching on the ground, dagger back in hand, the cat squirming desperately, yowling and hissing and ripping up his arm as he bit out a curse, letting the animal drop.

The cat landed on all fours, hissing at Noctis before darting right past him and climbing up the damn tree again, until she was back on her safety branching, clinging precariously, hind legs scrambling to keep herself upright as it sagged under her weight.

Noctis could only stare, bleeding out of several long scratches on his arm and hand. "Oh come on. Seriously!?"

    “She feels safer up there.”

Eleven had been silently watching the attempted cat rescue from the moment the young man had begun the careful climb up the tree. She, much like the man, had been drawn in by the quiet cries of the poor, frightened creature, though she hadn’t yet decided to take action (or, to be honest, figured out exactly what she should do.) She could probably have climbed the tree to reach the cat as well, but the cat was afraid, and Eleven knew all too well what fear could do to a creature. Her track record with cats in particular wasn’t great. Even if she managed to get in reach of the feline, she doubted it would let her pick it up. Perhaps her telekinesis could be of use? But that was bound to terrify the cat even further.

So, uncertain what to do, Eleven had stood by and watched as another person tried instead. She had made no comment for the duration of the attempt, staying back and half-hidden by the trunk of another tree nearby. It wasn’t until the attempt failed, and the would-be rescuer was left scratched and frustrated that she decided to speak. With slightly hesitant steps, she came out into the open, head tilted back to stare up into the branches to spot the cat.

“I don’t think she wants to come down. She knows she’s in trouble, but nothing up there can hurt her like it can down here.”

Truth be told, there was no guarantee that the man had good intentions with it. Eleven felt confident that he did – after all, if he was a bad sort of person who wanted to hurt something, there was far easier prey to go after down on solid ground. He’d gone through a lot of trouble just to do something good, that much was easy to see. But the cat couldn’t see that. She probably wasn’t thinking at all. Eleven felt very bad for her, and that was why she hadn’t been able to tear herself away from the situation.

Really, she shouldn’t have been out and about at all. Hopper wouldn’t be pleased about it if he knew, but something was going wrong in Misty Hollow and as a Defender, he had enough trouble on his hands that she did not think he’d notice. At least not right away. And that was good, because Eleven knew she had the ability to help, and if that was the case, how could she just stay inside and do nothing?

Tearing her gaze away from the cat, Eleven looked at the scratched up man. A little curious, a little shy, she asked, “You’re…okay? You’re bleeding a lot…”

Noctis had felt the eyes on him as he climbed, something that made him always a bit self-conscious. But he also wasn't going to let a little thing like that stop him from his current goal of rescuing a cat from a tree, no matter how cliche it was. Because the poor thing looked terrified, and there was no way he could just walk right on by and ignore it. He'd always had a soft spot for animals.

It wasn't until that cat was flailing in his arms, breaking free, and making her grand escape back up into that tree that Noctis finally really felt the burn of those eyes on his back. He turned, lips still downturned into a frustrated scowl as he cradled his arm, fingers running gingerly over the long bloody scratches.

At least it was just one little girl. He couldn't feel too embarrassed in front of one little girl. Noctis let out a faint sigh as he looked over at the kid, before glancing back up at the cat in its tree. The girl did have an interesting take on the situation. And maybe the kid was right. The cat felt safe up in that tree, despite the danger of falling out of it (and this cat certainly seemed to have precarious balance, with the way she was clinging to that tree with her claws, hind legs slipping down every once in a while).

Didn't mean Noctis could really understand the idea of wanting to hide somewhere dangerous, just to get away from...what...imagined dangers?

Not that Misty Hollow's dangers were imagined, but he couldn't see any immediate threat to any cats. At least not until night fell.

"It's fine," he said softly, pulling his fingers away from the wounds on his arm and actually tipping his arm slightly so he could get a good look at those scratches. They were harsh and they burned with pain, the wounds still openly bleeding. But Noct had gotten worse. "So, any ideas on how to get the cat to feel safe enough to leave the tree on her own?" he went on, shielding his eyes from the sun as he peered back up into the branches of that tree.

At first, Eleven just shook her head. Much as she wanted to help, she had such a bad track record with animals that she doubted her ability to make the situation better. That was what had kept her standing idly by while another person came along to do something…but now she was being directly asked for some sort of input. How could she still stay out of it?

“Something must have chased her up there,” she said slowly, and peered back up the tree at the trembling cat. “Something that scared her bad. She won’t want to come back down, not until she knows whatever it is is really gone.” Sure, that might be mere speculation, but Eleven felt pretty certain that she was right. But even if she did have it right, that still didn’t exactly help much, because the scary thing (whatever it was) was still a mystery to her. She couldn’t make things safe without that vital bit of knowledge. And in Misty Hollow, the options for monsters seemed almost endless.

“You could wait,” she suggested. “Maybe in a few hours she’ll just come down. But then it’ll get dark. It’s not safe here when it’s dark.” At least, it hadn’t been lately. Eleven had only been in Misty Hollow a short while, but it at least seemed as though things had gotten worse than they had been before.

“Maybe I could lift you up to her,” she said doubtfully. Her telekinesis was certainly strong enough to carry a person, and she had been practicing, but she had also just witnessed how poorly the cat had reacted to being held. It seemed unlikely that the man would want to try that again, but it didn’t hurt to offer. “At least then you wouldn’t have to climb again.”

It seemed the kid wasn't super forthcoming with ideas. Which was okay, because Noct was coming up with a blank in that department as well. A scared cat was a stubborn cat, and she'd probably be clinging to that branch all through the night if she didn't find some way to feel safe again. But night wasn't always a great thing in Misty Hollow. It was fairly safe inside of the barrier, but that didn't mean that something wouldn't happen.

Plus, it just seemed wrong to abandon a frightened cat in a tree.

The kid seemed to be following the same train of thought. It was too dangerous to wait until possibly nightfall, for both them and the cat.

"Lift me up, yeah?" he echoed, unable to hide that faintly amused file at the girl's suggestion. He wasn't one to usually judge, but she was tiny and yeah, he didn't think that would be happening. "Well, before that, maybe we can try and lure her down," he suggested, placing one hand into his pocket and mentally drawing a few bills from his armory where he kept the rest of his loose change.

"There's a market near here, right? Do you wanna run and grab a can of cat food?" he asked, holding the money out to her. Noctis had drawn many frightened animals out of places they didn't want to be. Some were more difficult than others. But food was usually enough to draw a tentative cat from their hiding place.

    Usually.
