    March 12th, Year 108
    Gerty's Imports
    Participants: @Cordelia Goode

Due to its size and location, Gerty's Imports was a shop that was pretty easy to pass by, but those who were interested enough to seek it out were rewarded with the wide variety of magical and occasionally technological gizmos for sale. While Rotwang may not have come to Cascade Bay too often - mostly due to the weather's affects on his prosthetic hand - he had as much of a good eye for detail as he was inherently curious so it was only a matter of time before he stumbled upon the place.

Gerty's was squished between two other, more prominent buildings but it just so happened that neither of them sold anything that was of importance to the inventor. The minute shop in the middle caught his attention almost immediately because of the strange assortment of objects displayed in its front window. He entered the place without hesitation, hoping to find something that could be of use to him.

It turned out that nearly every shelf carried at least one artifact or gadget sitting atop it which intrigued him greatly. What was perhaps the most fascinating object stood beside a small, clear orb labeled REMEMBRALL - it was a pyramid of a deep blue hue which was opaque and slightly larger than a jewelry case. The label below it was faded and unreadable except for the last word - BOX - which in some way gave it a more mysterious air. Rotwang picked up the trinket and turned it over several times in his hand. The pyramid was made of some sort of crystal and relatively lightweight despite that, and there didn't seem to be any obvious way to open it.

Once he'd touched very inch of the so-called box without any luck of finding an opening, Rotwang gave it a good long stare and then shook it violently. It had no effect and left the inventor rather frustrated.

Cordelia had heard of this place and had traveled from the Schola. It was a relatively short trip, once she exited the school grounds she could now teleport and she had done so, appearing in the neat little alleyway near the stores. Being this close she could feel it more and more, and rather than fight it, she walked right through the doors.

There were plenty of objects that appealed to her more magicky side and she knew she could get lost within the trinkets and objects that made up the inside of the store. There were things that she knew, and others that she wasn't entirely sure of what they were used for or what they could do.

Fingers lightly grazing along the shelf, she noticed there was someone else in the store. Trying to get something to open by the looks of it. "That looks rather interesting." She spoke in way of greeting, announcing her presence so that he wasn't too spooked by her sudden appearance.

Normally the inventor would have been startled by the stranger’s sudden presence, but he was so fixated on the mysterious object that even if he had been given a fright, he hadn’t shown any evidence of it. He did not jump or exclaim anything out of nerves, but rather continued to stare at the pyramid with utter frustration. It appeared that shaking the thing hadn’t affected it at all and without an obvious method of opening it, the strange trinket was beginning to seem like it was meant to be a scam.

“Interesting, yes...” Rotwang hummed, finally looking up from the pyramid to face the woman but still absent-mindedly turning it around in his hands. “Though it doesn’t appear to have a function, I’m afraid! Not any that is perceivable...”

Despite his dismissive words towards the statue, Rotwang continued to muse over it. “It is curiously lightweight in spite of the material it is composed of. Furthermore, it looks as if its purpose is to lock away items of value...” He lifted it up to eye-level and began to study it again. “Ach! Why will it not open, as its label suggests?!”

Cordelia looked at the item within his hands and studied it from where she stood. There were plenty of items that were like that - whose true functions often were the cause of plenty of annoyances and frustration.

Rather than take the item from him, she looked at him and then asked.

"There has to be a way to open it. Mind if I try? Sometimes a fresh pair of eyes can help."

Rotwang lowered the mysterious object so that he could look back skeptically at the blonde who’d offered to help. He paused for a short moment as he wondered if she was somehow attempting to trick him into letting her take it away without actually having any intention of returning it. It was hard to trust the citizens of Pandora at times as there was such a wide variety of unpredictable people who lived there, and some of them who appeared harmless at first were in fact swindlers.

Despite this, the inventor’s curiosity got the best of his mistrustfulness. With just a bit more reluctance, he placed the blue pyramid into her hands all while eyeing her suspiciously. “Hm. I don’t suppose that will do any harm,” he commented, though the look on his face contradicted the statement. “Give it a try, then!”

Thankfully she wasn't the type he was suspicious of. Once she finished with the item then she would hand it back. It wasn't hers and she had no interest in purchasing it either.

Gentle hands held the pyramid and she turned it in her hands to have a closer look. No magic was used, well not quite. There was a little bit of her clairvoyance going on which helped solve the puzzle. With a few quick swipes, the pyramid opened. She handed it back to him, not even wanting to explain how she did it.

Rotwang had expected that it would take quite awhile for her to open up the strange container, or possibly all day until she or he gave up and left the premises in frustration. However, this did not turn out to be the case. In a matter of moments and a couple of hand movements, the pyramid had split apart, revealing its empty red velvet insides.

The inventor’s eyes lit up with astonishment. “Remarkable!” he exclaimed, taking the now opened box back into his hands. Again, he brought the object to eye-level and studied it both inside and out for a full minute, wondering exactly how the woman could have cracked the puzzle with ease. “Oh! Do explain to me how you have done it! And in such an incredibly short amount of time!”

When he finally turned his gaze from the pyramid to his new acquaintance, he had a look of curiosity and determination on his face. “You are familiar with these boxes at home, aren’t you? Oh! Perhaps it is from your realm!”

From her world? Not quite, though Cordelia would be more than happy to go along with that rather than tell him about her abilities. "I've had some experience, though with different shaped objects." Cordelia nodded and then went on to explain how it worked - he had asked so she would oblige.

"There are a few squares that if moved gently, they lock into its neighbor which opens it up." She pointed to what she was talking about while she explained, hoping it made sense.

Rotwang gave a quick two nods to show that he understood before shutting the pyramid closed. He wanted to try it again and get it right so that the object would be of use to him if he decided to buy it. There were all kinds of important things he kept at home which would be best off locked away from thieves or prying eyes, and what better could he do than to lock them within a puzzle box?

Again he attempted to crack the code, this time by performing the same hand movements which the woman had. It took him a couple tries to pull it off - but sure enough, on the second attempt the pyramid cracked open once more.

“Why, that is fascinating!“ he whispered as the quintessential Cheshire grin spread across his face. “And quite excellently designed! Yes! It is much like a strongbox, yet it gives off the appearance of an ordinary trinket.” It reminded him a bit of his house back in Metropolis, which looked far more extraordinary on the inside than out. That very notion made him consider the box’s origins. “Do you suppose it was crafted by a wizard of sorts?"

At least this was going well, if she would admit to such a thing. Watching him take that little object and then test out what she had done, only to succeed, was somehow quite satisfying.

"Perhaps. I wouldn't be at all surprised if it was." Cordelia nodded.

Once more, Rotwang snapped the two halves of the pyramid together to make it whole again. It was so very fascinating to him, to the point that he wanted to buy it and find a place for it somewhere on a shelf at home - if only he had enough coin on him. The thought had just occurred that he hadn’t even glanced at the price tag and that it was likely that the object costed more than what he kept in his pockets. Immediately, he began to turn the crystal box around to search for a tag on it, all while responding to the woman’s comment absentmindedly.

“You are familiar with it, then? Witchcraft?” The last word was spoken quietly, despite his being in a store filled with magic and the blonde’s apparent lack of surprise at him mentioning a wizard beforehand. He wouldn’t have been too surprised if she gave a nod in response, as she certainly seemed as if she could be the type. She had, after all, opened up the pyramid with ease, and it wasn’t as if witches would be the strangest people who existed in Pandora.

Cordelia didn't freeze at the question, just inclined her head and wondered if she should be honest. The type of story, however, helped because it might not be as big a shock.

    "Yes."

She watched him, waiting for his next move, which would depend on what she did next.
