    November 10th, Year 7
The darkness retreated, and their senses returned. Grass, cool and soft beneath their hands, brushed against their fur and the quiet sounds of life reached their ears. Nanachi barely noticed any of it. The daze the sudden shift in environment left them in lasted barely a moment, before they jolted into action. "Mitty!"

The Narehate twisted their head around wildly, searching for any sight of the twisted figure. But whatever had taken them and left them sitting in the grass, had left them sitting alone. Mitty was gone. Terror sealed their throat, struggling to breath as their heart hammered. "No. No, no, no, no, no, no. Mitty!"

Desperate, Nanachi strained to hear as much as possible; Ears twitching back and forth as they searched for any familiar sounds. A cry, a gurgle, anything. They put their nose low to the ground, searching for a scent. But nothing. They scampered forward on all fours, trying to fight the rising panic and the desire to throw up. Tears pricked the corner of their eyes. Wiping them away, Nanachi fought to slow the panic. Mitty needed help, and they needed to be focused. Glancing about properly for the first time, the Narehate took in the surroundings. The fog seemed thicker than usual, and they didn't recall seeing these kinds of plants ever before. But there was a familiar tension in the air, and the feeling of possible danger. Something was off, but it could wait.

As Nanachi took off between the trees, listening and sniffing and calling out for their friend, they didn't notice just what was off. The ever-present Curse, the phenomenon that existed as the persistent light source and fog of the Abyss, was nowhere to be seen.

    --------------------
Somewhere else within the forest, a pitiful creature slowly dragged itself across the grass. Twisted and broken, hardly resembling something that should be alive let alone functional, it let out a sound; One that sounded like a disturbing cross between a gurgle, an animal call and a pained whimper of a young girl. It was covered in light-pink fur, the back half of it ending in a pile of flesh and thick fur.

The front half was barely any better. Almost completely flat limbs that ended in large claws dug weakly into the grass as Mitty dragged herself forward again. Her one remaining eye focused on her target, and drool dribbled from the gaping wound of her mouth. With one last cry, she flopped forward and dropped her face onto a mushroom growing from the ground and began to try and chew on it; To little effect. But she refused to stop, or didn't notice, and continued to try.

Another day, another walk through the woods. It was a scenery that was growing to be rather boring to look at, since it was all trees and other plants around. Still, it was a pretty relaxing activity to do after some magic training, at least when there weren't things coming out of nowhere to attack her, or just random fae creature wanting to talk to her for a bit.

Today, however, Chise happened to stumble onto something most unusual. It was... something that she could only describe as roadkill that was still alive even though it shouldn't be, but somehow this creature seemed to be in an even worse state than that. It was just dragging itself on the grass, attempting and failing to eat a mushroom that was on the ground but determined to keep trying in spite of the futility of it.

For a couple of minutes all Chise could do was stare at the pitiful, rather disturbing and gross sight in front of her. She had to wonder if that creature had just been attacked and that was the state it was reduced to, desperately trying to keep itself alive. The young magus could only wonder if the right thing to do would be to try to help it live or just put it out of its misery. She walked closer to it and crouched to get closer to its level. At the state it was in, the chance of it being threatening in any way was pretty low, so she wasn't afraid.

    "Um... Hello...?"

She waited for a response even though she was pretty sure there was no way this creature could properly communicate. Chise wasn't even sure if there was anything she could even do about this creature, yet she couldn't just leave it behind and act like she had never seen it, not when it was in such a sorry state.

"Myaaaaaarrggh~" A long croaky sound left the creature once again, still with that disturbing mix of voices. Though it was impossible to tell if the reaction was in reply, or simply just another random sound the creature made. Its one remaining eye seemed to stare into the distance, though there was something about it that seemed unsettling. A presence almost, barely shining through.

And still Mitty tried to eat the mushroom, now thoroughly coated in drool as her flesh squished wetly against it; A massive tongue flopping out of the gaping mouth to lay over it.

The creature didn't even seem to be aware that Chise was there, it just kept trying to eat a mushroom that was still whole but covered in droll. The sound of the flesh squishing against it making Chise grimace a little.

"I... I think my appetite is gone for the rest of the day..." She thought as she kept looking at that rather disturbing sight even though at this point she really should've looked away.

She did stop looking at it briefly to glance at a stick that was on the ground and, just out of curiosity, she grabbed it and began poking the creature with it. She could see the stick sinking into its flesh which really didn't help the feeling of nausea any, but maybe this way she could actually get its attention.

At the first poke, Mitty paused. With another cry, the twisted Narehate began to slowly shift herself in Chise's direction. It was slow, and kind of sad to watch, as flesh bunched and shifted as she tried to drag her upper half around. "Nyaaaa~"

    ---------

Nanachi darted between the trees, leaping over roots and crashing through the brush as they ran along on all fours. They stopped briefly once again, crouched down still as their ears twitched and flicked atop their head. They sniffled once, but pushed it down. Mitty would be fine. They'd find her.

They took off again, hands and feet pounding against the ground as they zig-zagged back and forth through the area. It went on like this for a short time, before a distant sound through the tress brought the Narehate up short. Skidding to a halt, they crouched and listened; Body tense and breath held. The sound came again, impossible for Nanachi to mistake for anything else. It was Mitty! Relief and joy surged in their chest, a wide smile spreading across their face beneath their scarf. Until they heard another voice coming from the same direction. The relief vanished.

The only people that would be around that the voice could belong to were cave raiders. And if they found Mitty, they'd try to kill her and then when that didn't work; They'd try to take her away.

    Nanachi ran.

Her friend's calls grew closer and closer, which made them hopeful. If Mitty hadn't moved, maybe she hadn't been found. Leaping over a fallen log, they burst into a clearing; And saw they were wrong. A young girl was poking Mitty with a stick. She didn't look like a cave raider, but Nanachi was taking no chances. "Leave her alone!"

They drew themselves up to their fullest height, which wasn't much at all, and hoped that their appearance would scare the girl off.

The creature finally seemed to realize Chise was there and being slowly turning around to face her, very slowly in fact. If that was how it moved, she couldn't imagine it would be capable of travelling very far through the day. It was almost sloth-like in behavior, except... much creepier.

However, the sound of another person yelling made Chise quickly jump to her feet, letting out a yelp and dropping the stick, instead holding on to her staff with both hands and holding it in front of her as she turned to face the new arrival. Looking at who it was, they were definitely fairy-like in their appearance, but not anything Chise herself was familiar with.

She was onguard for all of a couple of minutes after being startled, but her stance soon relaxed as she tried to make herself as unthreatening as possible.

"I-I'm sorry. I was just walking here when I found this... person." She glanced at the creature on the floor again, then back at the newcomer. "It, I mean, she seems to be in such a bad state... I couldn't just leave her here, but at the same time, I didn't know what to do..."

Nanachi was relieved to see the girl back away from Mitty and stop poking her, but when she started to turn in their direction they quickly darted back; Taking cover half behind a tree. The staff she was carrying looked normal enough, but you never knew with Relics. If it was dangerous, Mitty would be fine but they wouldn't be.

Peering out from the shadows, the Narehate stared back for the several minutes of silence. When the girl relaxed, so did they. Now that the danger had seemed to have passed, Nanachi took the chance to look the girl over. She was definitely young, and not someone that looked equipped or skilled enough to traverse the Abyss. Not without dying quickly, at least. Which made them wary.

But these were little more than passing thoughts in Nanachi's mind, as their eyes fell upon the girl's hair. Their gut twisted and their heart hurt. It was red. A familiar shade, much like Mitty's had once been.

At Chise's feet, Mitty had clawed her way close enough to touch the girl's shoes; Crying and gurgling as she pressed against them.

Taking a breath, Nanachi stepped warily out into the open, doing their best to appear calm. "Naaa, that's just my Mitty. She's always like that. There's nothing you can do." Their eyes fell upon the twisted mess of their friend. "I was worried I had lost her."

The person who yelled hid away, were they thinking she was going to hurt him? Were they afraid of her? That was something strange to think about. Chise didn't consider herself a person anyone would be afraid of, in fact, she was a little nervous about what that fairy-like person could do herself.

Her mind was taken off of such thoughts when the other, deformed one got to her feet, making Chise instinctively step back from her. The norma-looking one then came out and began explaining that the deformed creature was called Mitty and that she was always like that. Looking from one to another, Chise could almost see some resemblance between the two, mostly in the claws and the tail. Were they related, maybe?

"Is... Is she alright? The way she crawls around, the sound she makes... It doesn't seem natural. Did someone do this to her?" She asked, looking down at Mitty at her feet, the expression and her sad tone of voice indicating some feelings of pity.

Watching, it became apparent to Nanachi that this girl wasn't a threat to anyone; Even if she tried. She didn't act anything like a cave raider, and looking almost ready to spook. Which meant she wasn't very bright if she was out here in the Abyss.

Letting out a small, quiet sigh of relief the Narehate calmed down fully; Feeling a little silly at their own reaction. But, weird things had happened today, even for the Abyss, and being wary was smart. Walking towards Mitty and the girl, they pulled their scarf down to properly expose their face. With a small, almost dark, smile, they said, "Not really, no. Her personality and mind are gone. It was the sixth layer's curse. I got lucky, but my Mitty didn't."

Nanachi crouched, reaching out to gently grab Mitty and drag her in for a hug. "I found you, nnaaa. I promise I won't lose you again."

Mitty wasn't fine, far from it. She had lost her mind and personality, all due to some kind of curse... This was starting to feel very familiar to Chise in a way that didn't really make her comfortable, because if this really was similar to the case she knew, there were some bad implications to be found. Still, at the end of the day she was able to break that one curse and save the people involved, perhaps a similar thing could be done here...?

"A curse? What kind of curse are we talking about?" She asked, though she soon realized without knowing her intentions, it might have come across as nosy. "I have some experience breaking curses, so maybe I could be of help?"

Though something that came across as odd was that it sounded like both of them had been cursed, yet Mitty suffered the brunt of it. Did that mean that neither of them were supposed to be like that? Were they once humans but then got cursed into becoming those creatures? She had to wonder what exactly they were supposed to be, but if it was a curse, surely it couldn't be good.

Nanachi kept their head down, softly petting Mitty as the Narehate gurgled and cried out quietly, and listened to the girl asking her questions. It was almost amusing, the way she spoke about breaking the Abyss' curse. Poor girl was horribly deluded. Of course, it didn't stop that painful mote of hope that still managed to cling to them. And that pain annoyed them a bit.

They didn't need this girl's help, not that there was anything she could do, and the longer she stayed around the longer before they could start looking for home. Glancing up, Nanachi gave the girl an amused and teasing smirk, and said, "What curse? That's a dumb question. What other curse would it be? The Curse of the Abyss, naaa."

The Narehate stood up, pressing her hands into her hips as she stared up at the redhead. "You're not too bright, are you? All the way down here, and with no idea what the curse is. You won't last long here with that ignorance, especially if you're alone. "

This person seemed to be new to Pandora, because they spoke of things that Chise hadn't heard of and spoke like she had been living around there for a long time. Chise had never heard of a "Curse of the Abyss" and even though she didn't really know a lot about Pandora in general, something that had the power to reduce a person to the state Mitty was in would likely be something she would have heard of before.

This made the mocking atittude of this person all the more ironic since she was the one being ignorant, to the point of being a bit amusing. Still, if they were new and weren't aware that Pandora worked under different rules, then she figured she might as well explain things herself.

"I think you got the wrong idea. We're not down anywhere, this is Pandora. An entirely different world from what you and I know." Chise explained calmly and in a rather matter-of-fact tone, although all things considered Pandora wasn't too different from the Earth she knew of in terms of what could be found in it, especially considering there weren't many things about her world and its residents that she didn't know of. "Did you just arrive here?"

Nanachi froze, their face twisted up in a bemused expression and their ears sticking outwards slightly. "...Eh?"

The bemused expression turned into a now slightly bemused smile, as the Narehate started to silently question the girl's sanity. "A different world? You do know how crazy that sounds, right?"

Yet, what had happened to drag them to this forest wasn't like anything they had seen in the Abyss before. And there was something about this place that felt... off. It made their fur stand on end, and there was a niggling sense of something in the back of their head. Nanachi's eyes narrowed slightly. "Naa... What do you mean 'arrive'?"

If the girl was familiar with the creepy black vines, then maybe she knew more than they first assumed.

Chise had to admit that the whole concept would probably sound like crazy talk from an outside perspective and she couldn't help but feel a little awkward after that particular comment. She knew it was true though and luckily she was handed a way to quickly prove it.

"As far as I understand, everyone brought into this world was grabbed by some black vines. I assume I was too, but I was asleep when I was taken here so I didn't see them."

Her circumstance in particular wasn't helpful to explain things, but it was something everyone else went through, so she had no reason to believe she would have been given special treatment.

"Nnnaaa..." Nanachi mused quietly as they watched the girl carefully. So the girl knew about the vines, though it seemed more from what others had told her rather then her own experience; Which they weren't sure if that was more or less suspicious. She could have also been lying to lure them into a false sense of security, but this girl didn't feel like another Bonedrewd.

"So there are more people around? Where?" The Narehate inquired, deciding to go along with things for the time being; Still idly petting Mitty. "And just what and where is 'Pandora'?"

"There's a town close to these woods called Misty Hollow. A lot of strange and dangerous creatures lurk there, but there's is a barrier that protects a part of it. Other than that, there's also Pandora Town, which is the biggest community around here I believe, but I think it would take at least a day to arrive there by foot."

The topic of where exactly Pandora was located wasn't something Chise had an answer to and, in fact, for the most part she was avoiding trying to think too hard about it. The only thing she could compare it to was Tir Na Nog but even that was a loose connection at best.

"I don't think anyone can really explain what Pandora is, honestly. It's just... a place where we have all been taken to. We don't know if there's any purpose for us being here or anything of that kind, we're just... here." Chise shrugged, looking just a little frustrated with the lack of explanation for these unusual circumstances. "Some people are actually happier here than they were in their own homes, others had important things to do before being brought here... there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason for who gets taken and sometimes people are just... sent back all of sudden."

Nanachi quietly absorbed all the information the girl provided, staring silently. If there was a town nearby, they would have to scope it out at some point. Get an idea of just what the people were like. Though, from the sound of it they would likely not need to worry about people straying far from it if the creatures here were anything like the ones around in the Abyss. That did leave the question of what this girl was doing out here, though. Suspicious.

At this point the Narehate was willing to believe that wherever they might have ended up, it was not in any part of the Abyss. The reason for why they had felt off ever since they had arrived had become apparent as they had watched the girl and the surrounding area. There was no Curse. It could have been one of the small pockets where it was so thin that it was nearly non-existent, but the terrain didn't seem to support that. They couldn't know for sure until they started to scout it out, but too many strange things were going on.

The girl continued, and what Nanachi heard next made their fur stand on end. People randomly taken and place together, with no reasons given? It sounded like an experiment. And then, they could be sent back without warning? Whatever was doing this had tried to take Mitty, and it was only seemingly luck that had brought the Narehate along as well. If whatever was causing this sent Mitty back and they weren't...

A sick dread bloomed in their gut as they clutched their friend tighter. "Is there any warning that it's about to happen?"

This new person seemed to take what Chise was saying mostly in stride, just listening and perhaps trying to process all the information she had been giving them. However, the last bit of information she gave her regarding people coming in and disappearing at random seemed to really scare them as Chise could notice their fur raising and they began clutching Mitty tighter than before.

"I... I don't think so. I never heard of a warning." She shook her head, saddened that she had to give them the bad news. "I have only been in this land for a month so there's still many things I don't know, but I believe we leave the same way we came in."

Which would mean vines suddenly appearing and grabbing them, an event that could happen at any moment including while they were sleeping. As such, it was really impossible to predict when something of that kind would happen. Chise had to wonder, considering their strong grip on Mitty, if they were mostly concerned about that poor creature being taken back all alone while they stayed in Pandora. Considering Mitty's state, she could understand why that would make them so worried, she wouldn't be able to take care of herself like that...

The dread in Nanachi's gut seemed to solidify, becoming stronger and an almost physical presence as the possibility of being separated from Mitty at any moment became very real. But in the end, it was just another weight added to what they were already carrying. They would deal with it, and protect Mitty; From creepy kidnapping vines or anything else. The time to worry would come later, and not in front of this strange girl.

Speaking of, the Narehate stared quietly up at the girl; Their goat-like eyes meeting hers, unblinking. There were still questions about just who she was, or why she was out here alone in an apparently dangerous area. For now, they continued to stare; Waiting to see what how the red-head would react to the silence and piercing stare. "Naaa..."

The only response Chise got was a unflinching stare and silence, at least until it was broken by the person making a meaningless sound that seemed to be just a verbal tic of theirs. It was getting awkward very quickly and Chise had to wonder what exactly they were planning to achieve by staring at her like that. Were they expecting her to do something?

"Um... My name is Chise Hatori, I live here in these woods. What is your name?" She changed the topic to something signficantly more mundane, a thinly veiled attempt at breaking the awkward silence.
