    @Alphys

It had been nothing but an ordinary check-up, yet he was glad once it was over. As always. Hospitals still scared him, even though he had come someway from attacking the staff, had accepted his fate of coming here on a regular base. Even trusted the doctor a bit, unwilling as it was. But it kept him from dying. So he stayed. Cooperated. Held back on all comments, grit his teeth at the needles, the scans, the changing medication and continued on the painstaking slow progress to get better.
Still, once he was through and had everything he'd fled outside the fastest way, which turned out to be the backdoor, leading into a sidestreet clustered with trash bins. For a moment he just stood there, leaned against the wall, eyes closed and focusing on breathing until he had calmed down, wasn't short of freaking out anymore. Only then did he manage to focus on his surroundings, the murmur of noises from the main street, the water dripping from the roof, the autumn cold seeping into his bones.
And the cluster of someone rummaging through the trash. Immediately he had his guard up, hand on his hidden knife, careful treading around to see what was up. But at a familiar yellow being he laughed out, crossing his arms in front of him to hide the tremor in his hands. With the stress of a hospital visit even a slight scare set him off like that. “What are you doing here, little... cousin?” He didn't manage to grasp her name right now, wasn't sure he even knew it, but played over the stumble in his thinking with a 'cousin', grateful for the slang he could use at every occasion.

Old habits die hard, and for her new project, she needed medical equipment to cobble together the device that still loomed large in her nightmares. Naturally, this meant a trip to the bins behind the Pandora Hospital, and she'd been assembling a few piles, sorting it into things she'd need, things she might need and the much larger pile of stuff that was simply waste, no good for anyone or anything. Just as she was leaning in to extract what looked to be a very promising tangle of plastic tubing, she heard Daniel's laugh, causing her to jump, letting go of the bin and falling backwards.

Fortunately and unfortunately, the little trash piles she'd been making did a good and rather disgusting job of cushioning her fall. Laying out on her back, Alphys simply stared up at Daniel, trying to work out where she recognised his face and voice from.

Oh, she thought, as the memory of their first meeting came back to haunt her.

"Just, um, you know," she spoke casually, as if this whole situation was completely normal, "laying down and having a rest in this, um, wait, what are you doing here? Are y-you working at the hospital? Because this really isn't what it looks like, Mysterious Pipe Swinging Human X."

The little monster was just as clumsy as the last time, falling at just being scared a bit. And she still seemed to make a living this way, which hurt him a bit, since he had done good since their last meeting – found a place to live, made friends, got help, didn't had to worry about money... settled in. Only by doing so had he noticed how much he'd missed that little stability and it helped a lot now.
At the question if he worked at the hospital he winced, wouldn't do that under any circumstances. Bad enough that the other him, the one people remembered, studied something close to medical, being an actor of all things on top. Way too much attention for his liking and the reason he kept a bit away from Ark City, even if it reminded him of home. But in Cascade was Alex and no tech, so it was quiet, even if he had to deal with magic. Or rather not deal with it, because it was too much on top of it all.
“No. I'm here for check-up.” he replied, keeping it vague for the moment. No need to tell every stranger that he was dying. Instead he smiled at what she called him. “Ah, I'm pretty sure we already got over this to friends.” There certainly was no intention for hitting now, not to mention that swinging around like that would make him drop to his knees from dizziness the moment he stopped. So instead he walked closer, took her arm and pulled her up. “Better?” It really hadn't been his intention to hurt Alphys. Again.

"Better, t-though I'm not sure the stuff I landed in can say the same," Alphys tried her best to make herself look a little bit more presentable, smoothing out her lab-coat before glancing down at the pile of medical equipment and waste that broke her fall. Somewhere in the bottom of the pile, something had clearly burst, as an unidentifiable puddle was beginning to spread. Hopefully something would be salvageable, but while Daniel was here, well, she didn't want to be seen rummaging through the waste by him.

"A check-up? You know, I am a doctor, so if you ever need a second opinion or anything, I'd be happy to help," she politely shuffled a few steps away from the encroaching puddle of disgusting liquid, "and I've been brushing up on my human anatomy. For work, b-because there's some really interesting differences between, um, so humans m-might not all be the sa..."

    Her voice trailed off.

"How did the check-up go? Good, r-right?"

He glanced at all the things at their feet, careful to not step into it. Hopefully they had put the real dangerous stuff somewhere more secure, so that they hadn't accidental unleashed a plague on this city. Some probably useful parts he could make out, but he had vowed to not fall back on his street ways if he could help hit. No salvaging for him, unless it were small things out of nature he could use to make jewelry.
That she offered to help with his health issue made him smile a little. It was nothing where a second opinion could do any good and with the methods she used here to get... whatever, he'd rather not be her patient. And at a second glass to the piles he frowned, worried, because this was dangerous for Alphys too. Might not be a lab or the hidden sewage lines leading into poor sectors, poisoning people, but still... this could go terrible wrong and he didn't wanted that to happen to anyone.
“Well... it's not gone any worse. Which, for me, is good, kind of.” he replied with careful words, turning a crate around and sitting down on the edge, getting more onto her level with it. “So, say you had a patient. Human. He's having busts of terrible headaches, like someone is splitting his skull apart every couple seconds to the point of him blacking out. In addition he can't keep his balance always and his strength fades easy. He can't keep his hands steady if stressed, sudden movements create a terrible vertigo and sometimes he feels too nauseous to eat. There is no outer indication of anything being wrong. If you had that data, what would you say is the cause?”
Daniel had told this calm, steady, keeping his bright blue eyes locked on her, hands folded in his lap to hide the shakiness he told off. As if it wasn't him but someone else. Usual he preferred to keep all this secret, but he wanted to keep Alphys away from this trash, so she wouldn't endanger herself. And if he thought back just a bit to his own time scrapping, a real scary story would work better than sensible words.

Alphys listened to the symptoms of this purely hypothetical patient, while she did confess to being a doctor, her specialities - especially when it came to humans - were of a rather different nature. It was still an interesting puzzle to solve, and a handy distraction from thinking too hard about the frightful machine she was intending to build, so the little monster considered what she knew about human anatomy, and started to run through options aloud, ignoring the puddle of gunk creeping towards her feet.

"Maybe it's s-some kind of poisoning? Or damage to the, um, the... brain," Alphys sounded a little unsure of herself, peering back at Daniel and briefly meeting his gaze, wondering just how hypothetical this situation was, before going back to looking at anything other than Daniel, "because in humans, t-there's all these little tubes near your ears, and they're for balance. So maybe there's swelling in the brain, and it's pressing the balance tubes, and that'd explain t-the nausea and... or it could be mercury poisoning? Do y-you get numb hands and feet?"

She paused for a moment, and then quickly tried to steer the conversation back to the imaginary patient they were discussing.

"Humans are remarkably resilient though, w-with all that Determination. S-so maybe they'll be okay."

While Alphys worked out her answer, he waited patient, giving her room to think with his silence. He really doubted she would come up with a different diagnosis, especially since she only could go by what he said, didn't had all the test results. And after this was the second place where people told him he was essential dying... well, better to do something against it than wait out on the hope some less competent person was right.
Nevertheless the expression in his eyes was a sad one, albeit soft, telling her that this wasn't as theoretic a question as he'd made it sound, not about someone else. A planned step, because it would made her care more about what he had to tell her later. Also his condition wasn't exactly a secret anymore if she'd already seen him walking out the hospital from a check-up. What she said about the balance tubes was actual interesting, even though it wouldn't help him.
“If it would be poison, shouldn't it get better once the source is away? A whole world away, for example.” he commented soft on her conclusions, glancing at his hands. Hoping that numbness wouldn't be the next thing to follow, he couldn't take any more drawbacks. And while her last words were nice, they weren't true. He shook his head slightly. “Not this one. This one is dying.” Daniel pointed at the heap of trash. “And it's because of stuff like that.”

So he was the patient. Finally, Alphys brought herself to look at Daniel, with some concern and significantly more curiosity. While it had little to do with the warning he offered, at least she took a few steps away from the trash, and up closer to the seated Daniel, trying to get a better, closer look at him. As if there was some clue to his ailment that she could somehow spot just by looking at him unaided, without the benefit of machinery.

"Once it's in t-the body, and if it's not something the human organs are good at, sort of, um, scrubbing or cleaning or processing, then," she managed to look into Daniel's eyes, while it might've almost been a tender gesture, it was mostly so she could check if there's any problems with pupil dilation, "then y-you'll still have it inside you. Maybe in t-the blood, or in the brain, it depends what it was. At least if it's in the blood, w-we can clean that, I can make something that'd clean that, t-that'd be a start. In f-fact, we should do that. Now."

At least she was no longer expressing much interest in the piles of refuse she'd been sorting through.

There was nothing to see of his predicatement, no matter how hard you looked. Sure, he had his scar, but it didn't indicate what was wrong and was hidden below his hair. Apart from that, he was just an usual teenager, normal and healthy. Even the slight tremor had stopped by now, could've been written off as panic even before his explanation. For Alphys he listened and didn't backed off despite this being close to a real doctor talk.
Learning new things about how his body worked – noting it for the moment he'd really get poisoned – but shaking his head slightly at her suggestion. His eyes were fine, if she wouldn't notice the minor spot in one of them, that was brighter than the rest. “No. They're already trying that. And it's not poison, it's... something growing, faster than they can work against it.” With a tip against his temple he finally proved it was brain-related. “And if they just cut it out... well, that'd kill me as well.” Complicate story.
But not what he wanted to get at. “Listen. That's not about... this hypothetical friend. But the stuff you're scavenging here is dangerous. You sure mean well, but there's no knowing what the residue in it will do. In my world it were bad people, doing it on purpose. I don't want you to become one of them. But if you use that to help someone, they could get more sick from a mix of things you can't foresee. And not even that. It can get in the water supply, the earth, the air, reaching all your friends. Making them sick, open or in a subtle way where no one will notice until it's to late. Might even reach you. Innocent ones.” His tone had changed from a soft telling to harsh, demanding. Cruel. It had to be, to make her understand the point.

Alphys could've spent another hour talking about solutions to the problems faced by Daniel, or Daniel's purely hypothetical friend, and at least another hour asking questions about symptoms and attempted treatments. It was easier than listening to his warnings which had, up until this point, been ignored. And then he said it.

I don't want you to become one of them.

With guilt written all over her, the little monster glanced back at the discarded piles of medical equipment, at the puddle slowly spreading along the cobblestones, and, in her imagination, the terrible device she was planning to construct. Some days, she could close her eyes and imagine it there. Every night, she could close her eyes and see it.

As if, she considered, you weren't already one of them.

"Maybe there's something that can halt the g-growth," while Daniel's tone was rightly harsh, hers was almost pleading, desperate to keep the subject on something she could handle, "though it'd probably have to be directly administered to the thing growing in there. Which'd mean, w-well, surgery, but not, not using that stuff."

While he had more experience judging the body language of humans, it was obvious that Alphys probably already was in the mid of something he wouldn't approve of. And just as open showed the disappointment in his face, the hope that she was good, could make something out of her ideas, flickering down, shoulders slumping though he didn't commented on it. There was nothing he could do, had no leverage on her and not the strength to fight such a thing once more.
Slowly he shook his head at her next idea, not wanting to disappoint or tell off her ideas just because, but knowing how it stood. In a way he already had given up to a degree. “The point it is at... even getting there...” Daniel looked away, pressed his hands tighter together. Any action might kill him in the progress alone. Why must these things happen to him?
Once more he changed the topic. “Well, if one really would need such things to help someone...” he glanced at the little monster. There was no way to stop her, but the boy was giving her a chance to prove him wrong and do something good with his advice. “And had a white doctors coat and knew medical terms... and knew there is a unsecured back entrance to the hospital – one might just walk in, follow the floor to the big staircase, go up to the patient stations and look for the staff room. There'd be all they needed stored in boxes, clean and new and a wide variety. Of course one should look out to avoid questions and not take as much as to get noticed or take resources others will need more... but if one was careful, they could get away with it.” Indirect advice and he wouldn't try to follow up if she heeded his advice... it was just that everyone deserved a chance.

"Do y-you think they've got, um, I mean, in the hospital," Alphys took a few steps forwards, bringing herself right next to the seated human, her eyes flicking to and fro as he studied the side of his turned away face, "a proton beam emitter? Because there's a thing, it'd m-make getting at the part of the brain easier, and then you wouldn't have to actually cut in, you could sort of use a trio of emitters, and triangulate, and s-sort of, um, well, it's complicated."

The clear look of disappointment on his face made her want to try harder, to prove that she could, maybe, do something good. Something good that wouldn't involve hurting anyone.

"B-but it could work. We c-could even," she leaned over to one side, trying to position herself in such a way that Daniel could see her again, "build it from, um, well, I got a job, and there's all sorts of machinery there. We could build it together in maybe a week and a half. Maybe even a w-week, if you know your way around a quadrupole ion trap."

Even when he felt like giving up on trying, he still listened to Alphys ideas. Took her serious and treated her like she knew what she did, trusted her even to a point although he wouldn't let anyone try any new remedy on him. Daniel was tired of that, couldn't bear to be a test subject and all this medical things he didn't understand just made it worse. Whatever this thing was, getting in without cutting sounded just as uncontrollable and dangerous, the concept way beyond his imagination.
When the little monster made the effort to look at him, he hold her gaze steadily for the last part of the explanation, not turning away again. “I've no goddy clue what that thing is. And even if...” his gaze wandered to the pile of trash. “I don't want to. They try. Adapted the plan they started in my place, just with some better equipment... we'll see.” Not that he'd given up to ever get better, if so he wouldn't make the effort to continue with this – but there was only so much he could take.
Finally wishing to get away from the topic of the health of his not-so-hypothetical-anymore friend he poked her into the shoulder, smiling ever so slightly. “What you'd say if I get us some food?” The boy wanted to get her away from the trash, talk some more to lead her off the downward path she might be on. And if she still had to rummage around for parts, some free food sure wouldn't hurt. Maybe he could make her something later, to remember the boy that may not be around much longer due to someones else experiments.

If there was a subject that could get Alphys to drop, without hesitation, whatever dangerous or obsessive thought she was clinging on to, it was that. Not the promise of food, nor the poke in the shoulder, or even that brief glimmer of a smile, but the combination of all three, working in concert. It sounded, at least to someone as hopelessly romantic or just as desperate as she was, very much like an invitation to go on a date. Given that her attempts at going out on dates had, in Pandora, resulted in complete and utter failure - often before they'd even really started - Alphys decided to approach this situation very, very carefully.

Unfortunately, while her intellect was busying itself with working out whether this was an invitation to go on a date, her mouth was rushing ahead and dragging the rest of her with it, kicking and screaming, into trouble.

"I know a p-place that does noodles and I always thought that it'd be great for a date not that this is a date b-but," the beginnings of a smile settled on her features, "if it was a d-date this'd be perfect, unless it is a date, I mean, will it be a date? I don't mind if it is!"

The last thing Daniel had meant was for this to be a date. First off because he'd never before taken anyone out on a date nor been taken to one himself. His life had been busy with other things than love or being normal at all. And then there'd been June. The mess with Tess. Kaede, whom he never really got to know before she died. Too much had happened and there was the thing that even if he'd attempt something, it was too cruel to think about how he might die soon. Cutting off another persons hopes.
So he hesitated to answer on her questions, not wanting to hurt her in any way, but unsure how to deal with that. “No... I don't think so, cousin.” Suddenly his voice was weary again, from hurt too deep to talk about. Showed in his eyes too, the silent plead to not ask. They could be acquaintances, friends, something close to extended family, but nothing more, not anytime soon, not when he still couldn't forget June. And what she'd done to his family.
To stop any further question from her he got up, brushed dirt off his pants. “Sounds lovely for lunch though. Lead the way.” His smile was forced, but he'd still treat her to the food and have a nice time. Alphys didn't meant to hurt him, couldn't know of his history – he'd told no one.
