Alice was starving. It wasn't really something she had felt before, but it felt unmistakable. Her stomach had been twisting in knots, but now it was silent, and she just felt tired. It had been awhile since she had eaten, stumbling from place to place, too proud to go to a shelter (well, that and she had never heard of whatever a shelter was, and she punched the last person to try and take her somewhere until he left her alone), and though people had mentioned an orphanage... No. It was hard not to immediately think of those children, chained to the Abyss of no fault of their own.

Alice would rather die than end up like that, pawn to some idiotic cult leader, led around by the nose by a Chain.

So no. No orphanages, no shelters, whatever that was. Just her, and what food she could scavenge. Alice walked around, feeling that hateful weakness in her arms and legs. Tripping into someone, she stumbled back and huffed. "Get out of my way," she said, pouting, not really looking at the person. She looked terrible, having spent too long without.... Without a home, without a place to go. Without food.

His only interests in going to Cascade Bay was book purchases. They had a decent tea shop, but that wasn't enough to get him going there often. Not given the last time he'd went there he'd been met by a literal ghost from his past. He stayed in Schola itself or in Peryton's Keep, as far away from such nuisances as possible. So, of course, the day he decided to go anywhere else another such nuisance would follow. He dealt with enough children on a day-to-day basis that he didn't make it a habit to talk to random street children.

Even back then just after the war and walking through the ruined streets of former Babylonia. It was the outward exclamation that drew him to a boy rather than the predicament itself. He knew to mind his own business for the most part, being a formerly too proud teenager himself. Except he was hard-pressed to ignore certain plights, like when the young girl ran into him. Lethargic and eyes shallow, a ghost of a hungry child.

He could tell this kind of behavior a mile and it was his turn to scoff. "You'll die if you let your pride win out," He cautioned, no inflection of emotion in his voice as he stopped a few feet away, "if that's your wish, then hurry up and do it where no one has to see it. If not, then go ahead and find a place to take you in already. This isn't the kind of world that shows kindness to children." If there even was such a world. But it was true enough, wasn't it? Adults could find jobs. Kids brought here were alone and doomed to be at the whim of whatever caretaker until they inevitably disappeared as well.

Alice rolled her eyes as the person who she had run into didn't get out of her way, instead starting to lecture her on how her pride was getting in the way, and that she'd die if she didn't eat something soon, like she didn't already know that. "I don't want to die," she snapped back, her energy rising as her metaphorical hackles did. She didn't want to die, and she definitely didn't want to starve to death, which was already awful, but she refused to go to one of those places that just took advantage of children.

Did any world show kindness to children? Alice couldn't get the image out of her head, of Humpty Dumpty's contractors, dead and dying, all of them, through no fault of their own. Just because they had been manipulated by adults who thought Chains were some kind of toy. "Where should I go, noodle-head?" Alice asked, crossing her arms and huffing, tapping her foot against the ground as she waited for an answer. "Since you know so much."

The girl snapped with a familiar fierce rejection. It was a fierceness a younger him might have shown-- But pride was a different stake for most of his students. Perhaps Luvia was best fit into that haughty kind of attitude. Except Luvia strove to be the best in her field, this girl seemed to think that pride would keep her alive rather than staying elsewhere. Given her returned statement, it seemed ever more true.

He made a 'tsking' sound, mouth pulling into an ill-amused-- disgruntled-- expression at noodle head. Really, now? If she thought he was going to take pity on her like that-- "You know very well where you need to go if you wish to survive," He commented coolly, but the irritation at the name still colored his tone, "there's plenty of shelters and orphanages. If you can't deal with those circumstances than you're bound to die." Despite the irritation, there's no pity in his voice. It's a fact of life-- No world was kind. As an orphan proper, from a third rate mage family, it was a simple fact. You did what you had to to survive. Pride be damned.

"What the fuck is a shelter?" Alice asked, savouring the feeling of being able to swear. People had mentioned them, but just seemed to assume she knew what they were. Besides, if they were in the same category as orphanages, she wanted nothing to do with them. She pouted, slightly, at the 'tch' sound. The more she interacted with this guy, the more he reminded her of seaweed-head, in a way that she did not appreciate. She missed Oz, and Seaweed-head, and Sharon. Hell, she'd even take Clown-face right now.

The feeling of emptiness grew, and Alice made a face. "Orphanages are just places adults run to take advantage of weak children, and I'm not weak," she said. Despite their height difference, Alice's complete belief in her own strength, and the look she gave him, made it seem like she was looking down on him, daring him to say otherwise, even if she actually came up to somewhere around the noodle-head's torso. Alice crossed her arms, and tapped her foot, waiting for his reply.

The annoyed pinch of his brows deepened. Nothing she said really bothered him on a personal level, it was just the arrogance. The sheer belief that no matter what she'd be fine. It was too familiar. And thus it was annoying. He scoffed, hands pressed deep in his pockets as he looked her over.

"You don't want to die but you're oblivious to what needs to be done. A child won't be given a job or allowed housing unless they find a place to stay," he reminded, speaking in logic as he closed his eyes, "and an orphanage is no different than a home. If you think adults outside of it won't also take advantage of children, you're wrong. But if you were as strong as you say you'd suffer the indignity and prove them wrong." It seemed kind words and softening wouldn't work for her. And unlike some of the children he'd come into contact with she wasn't a child. Reines or Gray's age. He wasn't going to belittle her by acting like things were sunshine and roses.

He moved away to a vendor he'd been heading to anyway without further words. Ordering a cop of hot tea and two apples he turned back, wrinkles in his forehead still pinched together. One hand moved to toss one of the apples towards her without a shift in expression or tone. "How is it you expect to survive in such a situation then?"
