At some point that night, he had collapsed on the sofa. The apartment was quiet. Daenerys wasn't in and Merlin wasn't expecting any visitors. Really, after a full day at the school, he wasn't anticipating doing anything else tonight. Lounging about, diving into the book he had picked up last week which he hadn't had the chance to open up until now. Downtime wasn't something he experienced very often these days and so the warlock couldn't help but feel eager to put his feet up.

Still, there was that underlying worry. There was his concern for Oz, for the radio silence he had been given, and even as he started to read that book, Merlin found himself occasionally glancing toward his phone, hoping the other man might send him a text message, call him, give him some sort of indication that he was okay. He was alive. Merlin knew that. He would always know that. But alive and okay were two extraordinarily different things.

Attention dragged from both his phone and his book, though, it seemed that any form of relaxation was far from the table today. His magic shifted. More specifically, the magic that surrounded this very home, the magic that determined who had authority to come strolling inside and who didn't. Vividly, Merlin remembered the day that Ozpin had broken through his wards and that was the only reason he knew despite all hope that it wouldn't be him. He'd been given the authority to come inside of his own volition. Slowly, the warlock was getting to his feet, his vivid blue eyes fixed on the door to his apartment, magic already gathering at his fingertips.

These days, all he seemed to do was expect the worst.

The deal she had made with Ozpin had been very short lived. She could have hoped the threat of the death of those he cared for would convince him to ensure his hunters would stay far from her Grimm, but, clearly, he lacked the will to reign them in and simply trusted them not to do what he originally trained them to do. It seemed doubtful he initially even believed they would adhere to the terms of their deal, as he always lacked to say the will to say no - to her, to his hunters, to everyone.

Of course, ruining his vocal cords likely didn't help the situation, though she couldn't deny she was satisfied to know she was able to prohibit him from speaking. She gained little with their extremely short lasting peace of sorts, but she did get to watch as she killed him a few more times, so it certainly wasn't the worst outcome.

But a deal was a deal. He had broken their terms, and she deserved her retribution.

While she considered killing one of his hunters, she found it far more tempting to seek out the headmaster he had so publicly confessed his attraction to months ago. It was the choice that would likely hurt him more and result in less angry hunters personally ripping apart her Grimm, and it was hardly difficult to discover where the man lived with the information so public in this world.

She waited until evening to approach, then easily forced her way past the apartment's far less protective wards compared to the ones at the Schola. People in this world were so trusting of their feeble defenses - it was almost pitiful.

Darkness followed her as she summoned a burst of energy to force the door open and entered the apartment, her gaze immediately focusing on the wizard already standing in preparation.

    "Hello, Merlin."

Before it made itself known, he could sense it. Sheer power. It wasn't something he had never felt before, but in that particular moment, he couldn't place why it was so familiar. It hadn't startled him the first time. It had been his terms, his ground, his safe walls. And these were, arguably, the same and yet so very different. His home wasn't as protected as the school was. Perhaps it was overconfidence or perhaps it was the sheer fact that the lengths he went to protect were not for himself. They were for his students, his staff, for the future of the world. Merlin wasn't the future. He was just something trapped in the fabric of time.

Whatever the case, there wasn't time to think as the door burst in, pure energy forcing past it and behind that energy, a woman he hadn't seen before in his life. At least not like this, although he had yet to connect the dots. He had yet to realize that he had personally invited her into a place meant to be a haven, that he had walked her to the office of the man she had been terrorizing. The fact that she knew his name didn't surprise him. Most in Pandora did. But it still left him wondering just what her goal here was.

Merlin had a gut feeling. And usually those gut feelings were right.

"Funny ... I don't remember your face. And you have a hard one to forget." Merlin paused, but he could still feel that energy practically sparking away at his fingertips. "You must be Salem. The man you're looking for isn't here. He made certain of that."

"You wouldn't." She had taken care in disguising her appearance when first visiting the Schola and ensuring she seemed bland enough to overlook, so it was unsurprising Merlin didn't remember. Still, for one so concerned with warding his school, he was shockingly welcome to outsiders. "Did you truly believe Gwendolen Collins sought only her daughter's wellbeing?" There was no harm in exposing the truth after the deed had been done, in allowing him to realize his mistakes moments before she put an end to his life.

Her lips pursed at Merlin's assurance of Oz not being there and making certain of that. Knowing Oz as well as she did over the years, the man likely felt terribly at putting his loved ones at risk and therefore distanced himself from even the one he seemed to care so much for, or perhaps things had gone poorly between them. She had no way to know, nor did she particularly care. His death would hurt Oz regardless, and that was all that mattered.

"I am not seeking Ozpin," she clarified, voice remaining smooth as she moved a step closer. "I am only concerned with you."

"You should have taken more care in protecting your personal information." Her fingers curled, summoning dark Grimm arms from the floor to surround the wizard. "But it hardly matters now, does it?"

With one utter of that familiar name, it all came together in Merlin's mind and while there was little visible reaction from him, there was also no denying the way his jaw tightened. Gwendolen Collins. The kind woman who had sent him a letter. The daughter she had politely refused to bring to the school with her that day. Merlin hadn't heard from the woman since, which could have meant several things. Maybe it wasn't for her. Maybe they had found other options, a private tutor of some sort. Or maybe Pandora had whisked them away, the option perhaps least favorable in the grand scheme of it all. But that wasn't the case at all. This was the least favorable outcome. Salem herself, the very entity that Ozpin had so determinedly warned him about.

    Merlin felt like a fool.

But he knew just as well that he needed to focus, that the truth couldn't distract him long enough for her to do whatever it was she intended to do here. Either she wanted a location from him and she simply wanted him gone. Ozpin had made it very clearly to him just how likely the latter would have been. She stepped closer to him and Merlin held his ground, gaze never leaving hers, not until the very last moment when those shadowy arms sprout from the floor around him. His gaze dropped toward them, but by the time he had looked back up, the blues of his eyes had taken on a swirling gold as he thrust his hands out in front of him, a force of sheer energy pummeling toward the witch.

She could sense the increase of fear in the room as she spoke the name he had written so kindly to and openly offered to show around the school, her power only strengthening with his clear discomfort surrounding her. At times, she almost began to forget how easily manipulated others could be, but Merlin only proved it was simple to sway the minds of others - particularly the ones focused with proving themselves as good.

She met the blast by summoning a rush of energy glowing as crimson as her eyes to meet it, combatting the force with a clash that faded as it met. She could continue to fight all day, if that was what he wished, and he could stall her, but he would never stop the inevitable. He certainly was strong, perhaps even slightly stronger than she expected, but what was the worst he could do?

    Kill her?

She turned her focus to bringing the Grimm arms upwards, commanding them to restrain his arms so she would no longer have to concern herself with his attempts to knock her down. He clearly was powerful, so while she wouldn't be entirely surprised if he managed to resist her initial attempts, it would hardly delay her. He had no barriers of the Schola to protect him, and it certainly did not seem like Ozpin would magically appear aside him to come to his aid. She would defeat him.

His first attempt had been useless, but Merlin didn't end the onslaught there, thrusting wall after wall of energy surging toward her until the moment he felt that violent tug against one arm and then the other. His limbs were pried down to his sides and then behind him even as he thrashed against them. He would be damned if he went down so quickly, though. Situations like this, he showed the world that a thousand years of practicing magic had gotten him somewhere. Greatest sorcerer ever to walk the earth was quite a lot to live up to, and Merlin couldn't say he had ever lived up to the words of that prophecy. He never would and he had never wanted to either. But gods knew he had gotten somewhere.

"Acumendlícness cenningtid híewet windgeardas," he hissed under his breath, going still as those words rolled expertly from his tongue and his eyes once more took on gold. They were fixed on Salem, a look of fury. The air picked up around them more and more until it was wind picking up loose objects around the room. The book he had been reading when flying into the wall, and with each passing seconds, the winds grew more and more cutting, trying to rip through shadow, tear through any bit of meat they touched.

Salem watched carefully, hands opening as the Grimm arms pinned down the wizard's arms, presumably preventing him from casting spells such as the one he just did, and she prepared for her next attack, approaching even closer now that he was seemingly restrained. Perhaps motion wasn't necessary for his spells, but it seemed to be an intrinsic part of his casting, so, certainly, it would hinder him enough so that she could kill him. As much as she desired to watch him slowly die before her eyes, to feel as her strength increased with Merlin's increasing pain, she would be satisfied merely watching him become no more than a corpse.

Raising her hands, she prepared to attack, but her thoughts were quickly torn from her casting as he hissed some foreign incantation, causing the air to spin rapidly, objects flying towards her. She gritted her teeth and her eyes glowed red as they met his gold, and she could feel winds cutting against her, but whatever wound they managed to make was ignored - while her automatic healing hardly stopped the pain of cuts into her flesh, she didn't retain any damage.

She fought against the wind, summoning forth a crimson orb of raw energy in her hand that grew as she thrust it towards Merlin and focusing as much as she could against the rapid air whipping around her.

The winds were persistent and there was no intention to let them die down, but what he saw wasn't something that brought him confidence at all. Whatever cuts and gashes she gained vanished moments later as her body healed and healed on its own. And that was-- Gods, that wasn't something he could fight. The look on his face faltered as realization hit him. Merlin hadn't been prepared for this. He wasn't in his element, he hadn't been prepared for the sheer power she held. It left him wondering. Wondering whether or not she was just like Ozpin. Just like him. Whether or not she died, or if she just died over and over again. Merlin's immortality was a different sort. He didn't heal that way. He just laid there, dead until his heart decided it wanted to try to start beating again.

But he was determined. Determined not to fall, not to die. But then, maybe it would have been better that way. If she didn't know. If she didn't know that he could come back, that he would be right there at her heels the moment he came to. At least then, at least then he might have the upperhand. At least then he might be useful to Ozpin who continued to carry the weight of the world on his shoulders all on his own.

Maybe Merlin was too stubborn for that, though. Whatever the case, while the winds did little to hold Salem herself back, her shadow monsters at least suffered as the winds cut through the arms that grasped him. Freed from his restraint, it was hardly freedom at all as the second he moved to tear his arms away, raw and brutal energy slammed right into him. With a gasp, the wind was knocked from him and his body flew backward a good deal until he slammed into the wall on the other side of the apartment. By then, the cutting winds whipping about the room had ceased, leaving the air still and quiet save for the sound of Merlin's light panting.

Even then, his smacked a hand against the wall, dragging himself back up onto his feet again. "What will it take?" he finally breathed, chest rising and falling, gaze fixed on her. "What will it take for you to leave him be?"

Merlin was far more stubborn than she originally expected he would be, still muttering spells and retaining hope that she could be defeated. Blind, foolish hope. She questioned how much he truly knew Ozpin if he seemed to believe that she could ever fall, that she would ever simply abandon a fight because it seemed too long and laborious to continue. She would do anything to ensure Oz was hurt as much as possible, and after too many years of living, even days felt like only moments. She would fight until Merlin fell, and, surely, he would eventually tire as any mortal would.

With the force she slammed into him causing Merlin to fly backwards, she quickly stormed toward him with a determination that only strengthened with every step. The air was quieter than before, no longer fighting against her, still aside from his heavy breathing. His panting. It was almost amusing how Merlin was already tiring of their fight, and comparative to some of the past, this had been a relatively brief beginning. He was weak. The supposed leader of a school full of most of the children that would one day become fighters in this world was already at her feet, hardly putting up more a fight than Oz.

Her eyes narrowed at his question, his question amongst their fighting, as if he believed he could talk her out of this now. "He began this." Oz was the one to originally attempt to abandon everything they once had, to destroy the kingdom they built because he didn't agree with her goals. "And I will end it." Or, at least, she would end everything in this world Oz cared for, starting with the man before her.

She took the opening to lift her hands to summon forth fire and push it towards the wizard, hoping the wall of flames would be enough to consume him.

Merlin hadn't been able to talk to Morgana. Certainly not Ravenna. Moghedien hadn't given him the chance, and Semirhage ... well, she was a rather self-explanatory case. He wasn't sure there had ever been an ounce of humanity in her. He thought there may have been once in Salem, judging by all that Ozpin had told him. And maybe he was a fool to think he could find that humanity. This sort of thing typically ended in his death, but times like these, he could certainly relate to Oz's carelessness toward his own life.

What did it matter when he just came back and came back and came back?

Watching flame find its way into her hands, he was quick to lift his own. "Stæþweall," he hissed under his breath, creating a thick barrier between them that pushed outward, trying to force the flames back toward her. Jaw clenched, his poured his energy into that spell to keep the barrier in tact. "And how long have you been trying to end it, Salem? You could live a life here." That was so much of what Pandora was to some people. A new beginning. A chance to leave the past behind. They were literal worlds away from a home that was, for so many, nothing more and nothing less than agony.

Seeing her own fire coming towards her, she quickly caused it to disappear, lips curling into a snarl with a barrier rising to protect Merlin. He still was attempting to reason with her despite the flames that rushed towards him last time; he was still as much of a fool as he was when she initially encountered him.

"I am living a life," her glare intensified as she stared at the wizard, ignoring his initial question. What did he expect she would do? She was certainly more monster than human after millennia of corruption, and she enjoyed it. Ever since sinking into the Grimm pools, she was forever destined to create destruction wherever she went - and she thrived among it. She thrived right now, staring at the weakened man in front of her, feeling pain and desperation in front of her. There was no having an ordinary job, no having a family after she killed hers years ago, and Merlin was naive to even suggest such a concept.

She sent another blast of energy towards his chest in hope of breaking the barrier and forcing him to fall, not wishing to further dwell on conversation that would lead nowhere.

"And you're destroying others!" he shouted. Ozpin's. Over and over and over until he was shattered. A shell of who he had been the day Merlin had met him. He had never seen him so afraid, he had never seen him so frantic, and he had never wanted so desperately to help him more than he did now. And gods, it said a lot. Merlin had always wanted to help him since the day that he had turned up at his door.

The blast of energy that followed pierced into his barrier, cracking it and forcing Merlin back against the wall again where he slid to the ground, left staring up at her, glowering up at her. "Killing me won't change anything. He'll still be there. He will always be there."

Perhaps killing Merlin would fail to change anything - in a few years, whether decades or a century, she was sure the death of the man before her would be forgotten. He was hardly the first one Oz cared for that she killed, only adding onto the list of hundreds fallen at her hand simply because they got too close to Oz.

But it would still hurt him now, and that was all she required.

She ignored his last words, eyes flashing crimson as she summoned another wave of flames and forced them towards Merlin. The barrier was broken, and she watched as the fire consumed him and he no longer had any resistance to offer. Eventually, she lowered the flames, gazing down at his charred corpse.

    He was dead.

Her scowl from earlier faded, an expression blank save for mild contentment at the completion of what she came to do, and after a few moments of ensuring he was no longer breathing, she turned back towards the door. There was no need for her to remain when others eventually discovered his body, after all.

Just like that, flame was touching him, consuming him. It spread quick as could be and Merlin didn't have the chance to utter words. He didn't have the chance to think about what words to utter. Or maybe he let it be. The sooner this ended, the sooner he would be back, the sooner he could work out what came next. He was already spending all of his energy just trying to keep her back and his gut told him that it would take far more than he had to get out of this room. And so he let that flame consume him. His lips parted and he screamed until his skin had been scorched, the pain numb, his eyes closing.

    His heart stopping.

All there was left to do was hope that he didn't wake up in the ground, but perhaps his fury alone would get him out of that as well. He'd been through worse. Worse than that. Worse than this.
