    November 11th, Year 7
    @Eve

Yesterday's shift had been as entertaining as it had been exhausting and having had to get up rather early tomorrow to make it on time to his shift at the orphanage had worn John out a little.
He would never complain though - he liked both his jobs, liked staying busy and having something to do. The kids were nice, they liked him and he enjoyed spending time around them.
But now he was just hoping to rest in Arcade's arms on the couch with a mug of tea in his hands and some stupid show on the tv in the background. Why he hadn't headed straight home he didn't really know, maybe it was the emptiness of his apartment he didn't really want to be comfronted with now.

Cigarette between his lips and earphones blocking out the noise from the busy streets, John made his way to the other's new apartment - it was odd to think that Arcade had finally moved out and gotten his own place. Maybe John simply had a hard time imagining the other living by himself.
Just that he wasn't living by himself anymore, of course. He had a daughter now.
Which was an even weirder thought to wrap his head around. Not that he didn't think Arcade could handle it, not at all. But... it had seemed to come out of the blue and adoption really wasn't something that should be done spontaneously. Though John wouldn't judge.
Arcade was a goddamn adult man, after all. It was his life and his choices and John had no say in it whatsoever, of course. He wasn't his partner, after all. Not his boyfriend.

Taking a last drag from his cigarette before dropping the remains to the ground, John then adjusted the scarf which successfully covered up the - as usual - pretty low cut of his t-shirt underneath the warm, dark gray winter coat he wore.
The black combat boots and dark jeans covered up his prosthesis but the limp in his step was not as easy to cover up.
Entering the apartment building John removed his earphones and shoved them in his coat pocket, glad to have escaped the cold.
The smell of cigarette smoke still clung to him when he rang Arcade's doorbell, expecting to be greeted by the doctor himself who hopefully wouldn't be too annoyed that John was showing up annanounced.
Instead, however, he was greeted by somebody he wasn't certain whether he was feeling ready to be meeting quite yet.

[ooc: there you go, sorry for the long title.
Hope this works, lemme know if you'd like anything changed ^^]

    OOC: Looks great, thanks!

Eve was curled up on the couch, a pile of books next to her. Right now, Arcade was at work and she had been quite bored.

    That's what books were for.

    Books were amazing.

She could find out about anything. She could read about anywhere, even places that didn't exist.

It was incredible. She had learnt so much. Eve was reading about the adventures of a ladybug in a garden, a couple of pages from the end, when the doorbell rung.

Uncurling herself and stretching, Eve made her way to the door, presuming that it was probably Arcade home. She opened it to see someone who she only knew of through Starknet.

    Mr Silver.

    There was a long silence.

John stared at the girl for a long, silent moment, not knowing what to say. He had of course known that she might be home, had known he would likely meet with her eventually but somehow he didn't really feel prepared for it right now.
Which was ridiculous. He worked at an orphanage, he was good with kids.
    Why was this so difficult?

Clearing his throat, John smiled at the girl, deciding that this had been enough silence.
"Hi, you must be Eve, right? I'm John.
    Is Arcade home?"

His voice was as friendly and charming as always, his smile always reaching the sea blue of his eyes.
If Arcade wasn't home there were only two options really: leave and find something else to busy himself with or actually stay and try to talk to the girl, get to know her.
As unprepared as John felt for this, he still much preferred the second option to the first.

Eve blinked, and stared back. The silence seemed to stretch for a while.

    A long, long, while.

Then Mr Silver spoke, and she found herself bound to respond.

"Arcade is still at work," she replied quietly, her voice still rather emotionless, except tinged with a bit of disappointment. "I'm Eve. You're Mr Silver." she said, not a question, but matter -of-factly. "You called me sweetie," she finished, almost as if she was collating all the facts she knew about the man on the doorstep.

In her head, she was. Mr Silver was sleeping with Arcade, and the two flirted constantly. He worked at the orphanage, and at the bar.

And he smelt like cigarette smoke. "Smoking isn't very good for you," she said, a tiny bit of accusation in her voice.

His short interaction with the girl online had already revealed her to be a rather... strange individual. Not in a bad way. But simply in a way that was different from the average person.
It had left John wondering just what kind of environment the girl might have come from.

    Mr. Silver
Christ, it's been ages since anybody's called him that. It sounded almost wrong in his ears, that's how used he was to having others call him by his first name by now.
So Arcade was still at work after all. Well... not the worst news, right? It wasn't like John didn't know how to handle kids. Easy. He could just wait for Arcade.
If Eve let him in at all, that was.

"You can call me John, there's really no need for formalities."

Smoking isn't very good for you
    Now wasn't that lovely.
John chuckled lightly, not being able to disagree. Seemed like Arcade's medical knowledge had already influenced the girl - not like that was a bad thing.

"You're right, it isn't. But sometimes people do things that are bad for them.

    May I come in?"

John's request to call him by his first name obviously surprised Eve, as something in her demeanour changed, and she, well, it wasn't exactly a smile, but there was a lightness around her which hadn't been there earlier, even if she wasn't relaxed.

At his admittance that he knew smoking bad for him, yet did it anyway, Eve tilted her head. That didn't make any sense. Unless they just didn't care about themselves, of course. Then it made perfect sense. "How strange," she commented.

Eve nodded, and stepped aside, letting John inside. She was still obviously cautious, however, her wariness of him evident in the tension in her neck and the way she moved.

It was nice to see the girl relax a little when John offered she use his first name instead of his last one.
It were subtle hints but John was exceptionally good at reading people, which made it easy for him to catch the changes in her posture. But it also allowed him to make out the still remaining tension in her shoulders and neck - she was suspicious of him. Which he wouldn't blame her for.
He, too, had grown up in a world in which everyone was your enemy and one could never be careful enough, so he knew that behavior well.

When Eve let him in, John nodded his thanks, closing the door behind him and shrugging out of his coat. Removing his scarf, too, he placed both across a nearby chair, the rings on his fingers catching the light from the lamp and throwing a reflection onto the wall for a brief moment.
The sleeves of his cardigan were pushed up to his elbows, revealing a few smaller scars across his lower arms and the low cut black t-shirt underneath left his necklace visible.

"I brought chocolate, would you like some?"

He smiled at the girl, feeling oddly welcome even though Arcade wasn't here. Were they really close enough to feel welcome and comfortable at each other's homes?
John pushed the thought aside, reaching for his coat once more to pull out a small box of fancy looking chocolates from the pocket.

Eve looked at John, and it would be obvious to him that she was sizing him up, in a way. Working out how to put him down if he attacked her or Arcade. It was impressive how quickly he got comfortable, taking off various articles of clothing, and offering her...

    ..chocolate?

Eve looked at John curiously, head tilted. "What's chocolate?" she asked. The box was very pretty, she noted, and she thought she had heard Arcade talk about chocolate before, but she wasn't really sure.

He could feel the girl's eyes following him, every movement he made, she watched him. In a calculating, tense way. In a way John watched his opponent during a sword fight. As if she was expecting him to attack any moment.
It was concerning to say the least but it didn't scare John. It merely made him realize once more just how fucking cruel the world was to those who couldn't defend themselves.

"It's a kind of candy. Sweet food. It tastes great but is unhealthy in large amounts."

He smiled at Eve before heading for the kitchen and refilling the kettle. He really needed a mug of hot tea. The stupid November weather annoyed the hell out of him, tended to make him grumpy, too. The cold really wasn't for him. He wanted the sun back.

Eve nodded. "I think.... I think I'd like to try it," she said hesitantly. "I've had something sweet before." She tilted her head as John went into the kitchen, filling the kettle. "What are you doing?" she asked, following his movements with her eyes and clearly curious.

Arcade would sometimes fill the kettle to make coffee, which she had tried once and...

    Stained his labcoat.

It was hot and didn't taste good.

"Not making coffee?" she said hopefully.

So Arcade was already letting the girl have sweets? Ts, how irresponsible.
The sarcastic thought made John smile to himself. He had little doubt that Arcade was doing a good job, in all fairness. In fact the medical researcher was doing something John was convinced he'd never be able to do. Yes, sure, he worked at the orphanage and the children liked him, he got along well with them but only because none of them were his own. He couldn't imagine what it would be like to have kids. And now that his wife had left him, he doubted he'd ever find out.
But even if Madi would not have left him, he simply wasn't suitable to be a father, he wasn't suitable to have a family of any kind. Which was just fine with him though.

Eve's words tore the former pirate out of his thoughts and he looked at the girl, warmly amused.
Not a friend of coffee, was she now?
She was probably too young to drink it anyway.
"No, I'm making tea. You don't like coffee?"

He's noticed that Arcade had picked up the habit of drinking too much coffee lately. Probably the stress. Which was also what had caused John to start smoking.

Placing the box of chocolates on the table, John found two mugs after a moment and leaned against the counter while considering the available tea flavors and waiting for the water to boil.

Eve shook her head at John's question. "Bitter..." she answered. "And too hot."

She did not like coffee, and she didn't understand why Arcade lived off it in the way that he did. Then she registered the words before that, too wrapped up in her hatred of coffee to have noticed them earlier.

"Tea?" she asked eagerly. "Tea is nice."

Once it was cool enough, and not black tea. Much like coffee,, Eve found it too bitter. It wasn't pleasant. Chamomile, on the other hand, was gentle and lovely. She owed Aya something for introducing her to it, whenever they met again.

The genuine dislike towards coffee made John laugh softly - it was adorable, how much hatred the girl had for something as simple as coffee.
But if he were to be living with Arcade he might just develop a dislike towards coffee, too. The doc really drank too much of that stuff.

"There's different kinds of coffee, not all of them are bitter.
Fudge flavored latte for example tastes really good, or hazelnut spiced cappuccino."

John lived for those drinks. Christ, the 18th century was probably this miserable because they have never had pumpkin spice latte. Or a hot chocolate. Or caramel waffles.
He felt like he was at a really high risk of getting fat in this damned box, there were just too many delicious sweet things around here. Good that he was busy all the time and hardly ever had time to rest between his jobs.

    "What tea would you like?"

Reaching for peppermint for himself, John filled his own mug first, giving Eve a chance to think about what flavor she'd like.

Eve tilted her head. "Fudge flavoured latte?" she asked, confused. "I only understand one of those words," she commented. "The coffee Arcade drinks isn't nice," she said, changing her comment to match what John had said. "It's bitter and ... bitter," she said, looking for another word, and failing to find one.

When John offered her the tea flavours, she had a look at the flavours available. Chamomile was tempting, but if she could try something new, she should. She waited until John was finished with the peppermint and reached for it.

Chuckling softly John tried to think of a way to explain fudge flavored latte. Which turned out harder than anticipated.
"Well... fudge is a kind of sweet, not unlike caramel. And latte is sort of coffee made with steamed milk. Mix those things together and you get fudge flavored latte, which tastes great, really."

That made him remember that he probably spend too much money on all those colorful coffee flavors available around here. Sure, they made him happy and kept him warm, but they weren't all that cheap and buying one every day was an utter waste of money. He should probably try to cut back on those.

"Arcade drinks black coffee, as far as I know. Which tends to be bitter, but some people like it that way."

He shrugged lightly, and then poured the girl another mug of peppermint tea, placing both mugs on the table eventually.
Pulling up a chair John let himself sink into it, glad to be able to stretch his legs and take the weight off his prosthesis.

"So what do you do around the house all alone when Arcade's gone?"

Eve tilted her head and nodded as John talked about fudge. Though it was a sweet she had tried, she had tried caramel, and that had been nice, if very sweet. "I see...I think," she said, untilting her head.

Eve picked up the cup of peppermint tea and began to blow on it to cool it down. "Why?" she replied to his comments about black coffee. "It's bitter and doesn't taste good. It tastes like dirt."

She rook a small sip of the peppermint tea. It was also good, much like the chamomile. Subtle, not strong. "Read, mostly," she said, gesturing to the pile of books on the couch. "If I get really bored, I go for a walk."
