There was something about the way she spoke about emotions which somehow set John off track. As if emotions were distant from her, something to be observed from the outside. In a way. Even though she admitted to know hurt and pain.
It wasn't something John could claim to have experienced before.
But maybe people had just been simpler in the 1700's.

"So, why don't you tell me a little about yourself? Whatever you would like to tell, really."

Now whether this was a good idea was to be seen yet, but somehow John had a feeling this current conversation wouldn't get them anywhere.
And he still hardly knew the girl, after all.
All he knew was that she hasn't had a nice past. But every third idiot would be able to guess that once exchanging more than a few words with her.
"We can also make it a question game, if you like. For every question you ask me, I can ask you one in return."

Getting to know each other games weren't exactly popular in the 18th century, in all honesty, and while he could have suggested 'I have never' or 'Two truths and a lie', he wasn't certain whether Aracde would have approved of that. Making the girl lie or well... basically using a drinking game to get to know her, just without the drinks.
So just throwing questions about should be considerably harmless.

Eve blinked. She didn't know how to talk about herself, really. What could she say? How would she start?

She was stopped from falling into a spiral of 'how do I person' by John suggesting something else.

    A question game.

"That sounds...easier." She replied. "Should I ask....?" She trailed off, but it was clear that she was asking if she should start.

As expected the girl seemed more comfortable with a question game - which was understandable. It was often difficult for people to talk about themselves when being confronted with doing so without anything to start from.
It was always easier to answer specific questions.

For John it made little difference - questions were harder to escape than when he was the one picking and choosing what to say, but it wasn't impossible and he was good enough with words to be able to avoid saying anything he didn't want to say.

Picking up his mug and wrapping his hands around it he smiled encouraging at the girl, nodding.
    "Yes, sure, go on."

Eve nodded, opening her mouth and closing it again. She didn't really have a question. She didn't really know how to play this game at all. She looked at John. There were questions she had heard people ask when getting to know each other.

Taking a breath, she looked at John with trepidation in her eyes. It was clear that she was tense, building up to something big. And then, as she couldn't hold it in anymore, she opened her mouth and asked, "What's your favourite colour?"

For a moment Eve almost seemed to be concerned, apparently not really knowing where to start which was probably understandable.
She locked eyes with him and John wondered whether she was seeking advice, but then she took a breath, apparently having come up with a question.

And a big one, as it seemed. John wasn't quite certain what to prepare for but he was already shuffling half-lies around in his head, trying to organize them to not be taken aback by whatever the girl would ask.
Just... that there had literally been no reason for that whatsoever.
John blinked, now taken aback after all - for a moment silent before he laughed softly. It really wasn't at all what he had expected.

    "Sky blue."

There was no need to lie about that.
John took another sip from his tea while thinking about a question, wondering whether it would be a good idea to ask what he had in mind or not.
"What do you like most about Arcade?"

Because in fact, he was genuinely curious to hear what Eve had to say about that.

Eve looked at John, as he laughed very softly at her question, and she blinked. Had she asked a wrong question? Was it a stupid question? Had she done the wrong thing? Why was he laughing at her? She pulled herself in unconsciously, not even realising that she was protecting herself from imaginary ridicule.

And the John answered her question, and she looked at him. "Blue is pretty," she said softly. "I don't know what sky blue is, though." It sounded like the colour of the sky, but she wasn't sure, so she didn't say anything else.

John's question was interesting, and Eve thought about it for a while, even seeming to briefly stop breathing as she contemplated the couch. "He's... warm," she said finally. "Not temperature warm," (though he was that), "But other warm. Not hot, or cold, but warm."

She wasn't sure how else to explain it, really.

And then it was her turn again. She didn't want to get laughed at again, but she didn't know what to ask. She took a breath, but realised there was an easy option. "What do you like about Arcade?" she replied curiously. "Apart from the sex," she added, mainly as an afterthought.

The question seemed to make Eve think, as was to be expected, probably. John doubted he would have had an immediate answer to such a question, either, though that probably also heavily depended on the person in question.
He always found it rather interesting what someone could appreciate in another and how that could differ from another's perception of the same person.

    He's warm
And somehow, John knew exactly what she meant right away, even without the rather failed attempt at an explanation the girl then provided.
Smiling softly he nodded more to himself than in direct confirmation to her words.
Taking another sip of tea and barely so managing to prevent himself from choking on it when the quesition was thrown back at him.
    Apart from the sex
Clearing his throat, John stared at the girl for a moment in disbelief before smiling a little at a loss for words. Well, apparently Arcade did like to surround himself with very straight-forward people.

Silver thought about the question for a moment, tilting his head and watching the tea in his mug thoughtfully.
"His determination to help people even when it seems hopeless."

An idealist. John had always been oddly fascinated by those, never quite getting behind the mindset of aiming to better things which were way too far gone to ever get better.

    "What is your happiest memory?"

This might have been another tricky, risky question. But John was never really afraid of speaking his mind and inquiring about what he was interested in knowing.

Eve looked at John and nodded in response to his, well, response. Arcade was rather prone to helping people, and though she liked it, it became somewhat worrying when he took it too far. She waited for his question, and went absolutely still, almost statue-like. She was barely breathing, and the only obvious sign of life was in her eyes.

That wasn't an easy question. She didn't even know how to answer that. Eve thought back to her memories, and the happy ones, or, at least the bittersweet ones. She looked at John, and took a breath. She had an idea, now, even if it was tainted. She was too confused when she met Sven to really be happy. And then...

    that.

"....when I was young, there used to be this scientist...." she started to say. "...he was nicer than the others.... he gave me a lollipop once... I had never had a lollipop before....it was nice."

That done, she flailed mentally for a question, in order to change the subject. it had to be different to the question he asked her. "What do you like about chocolate?"

The answer of hers was...odd, to say the least.
Admitted, scientists had not really been too big a thing in the early 1700's, but it wasn't like they had been non-existent. And even then, what would a young girl be doing around scientists?

Eve's answer left more questions open than it it offered answers and John merely found himself being pretty confused about the girl's words, though it didn't show in his face at all.
For a moment he shifted and turned her words around in his head, trying to make sense of them but failing. He stowed them away for later reconsideration.
The girl's follow-up question was much more innocent than his had been, which was probably to be expected considering she was a child. Though children could sometimes ask the scariest things.
At the orphanage one of the boys had once asked John how many corpses he had seen in his life.
That had been a fairly uncomfortable moment.

As innocent as Eve's question was, it was oddly difficult to answer. Why did people like they things they liked?
"Uhm, it's sweet and it goes very well with black tea. Where I come from chocolate has been expensive and not something everybody could afford, which meant I never got to try it. So it's nice I got the chance to do so here."

Chocolate houses had sprouted in London like crazy towards the end of the 1600's and early 1700's, but it had been hot chocolate which they had been selling. And as all things exotic, it had been reserved for those who had the money to afford it.
And John had never had the money to afford anything at all.

"If you could pick one superpower of your choice, which one would you pick?"

Eve tilted her head. "You like it... because it's sweet," she said. She understood that. That made sense. Sweet thing were nice. "And because it's new," she continued, and she got that too. New things could be very good. They could also be very bad, but she preferred not to think about that.

His question... surprised her, but she knew her answer almost immediately. "None," she replied, something in her voice conveying that she was speaking from experience. "It's not worth it." If she could trade away her nanomachines and live like a normal girl, a life like the ones she had read about, she would do it in a heartbeat.

She looked at John and tried to think of a question. "How did you lose your leg?" she asked, head tilted.

Because it was sweet and new was a very vague summary but rather accurate. Though John couldn't deny that partly he certainly also liked it because it had used to be an expensive product where he came from - and it had a certain appeal to be able to enjoy what only noble people had been able to enjoy back in his world.
But maybe that was just his greed showing. Which wasn't always a bad thing, right?

Eve's answer surprised him. None? Really?
It also made the sailor rather curious.
    It's not worth it
Frowning lightly John considered these words. If he could shape-shift or portal, he would certainly enjoy this life a lot more, or so he thought. Some powers which were very much real in Pandora just struck him as not only useful but also utterly admirable.
Certainly not all of them had bad consequences - though John himself knew very well that everything came with a price.
Yet, why a little girl would say that, he couldn't help but wonder about.

Her next question put an abrupt ending to his wondering.John froze for a moment, looking at Eve speechless.
    "Arcade told you?"

Was the first thing he asked, and there was offense in his voice which he didn't quite manage to cover up. He couldn't imagine any reason for Arcade to tell Eve about that. It was not something worth knowing, nor was it in any way relevant so why the hell would Arcade think he had any fucking right to tell?

Clearing his throat, John put on a smile.
It wasn't Eve's fault, and he knew that.
"It was an accident on the ship, one of the ropes came lose and I had my leg squeezed beneath a cannon's wheel."

The lie was said easily, convincingly. John was a flawless liar, nothing gave him away.
It was easier to say it was an accident and it made it easier to prevent the memories from crushing him - the hands holding him down, the axe smashing bone and flesh and tearing through skin. The doctor's words, the saw.
The memory was blurry but it caused him nightmares occasionally still.
Being so taken aback by the question, John utterly forgot it was his turn to ask a return question.

Eve shook her head, though the faint trace of what she read as anger made her move back slightly, withdrawing once more.

"You walk...off," she replied quietly, trying to explain. "Not normally....like you're in pain....and you limp," she finished. "It makes sense." She looked at him, hearing the story. There was something off, almost wrong, in how easily he told it, the way the flawless delivery, but she couldn't work it out, so she left it alone.

"Ouch," she commented, not because she knew what it was like, but because she had read that people liked it when other people showed empathy like that. He wasn't asking her a question, which was weird, but she had struggled for questions herself.

So she sat there, silently, waiting.
