It'd been a huge guy. Big, butch, way taller than he was. That made a good excuse so that it definitely didn't sound like the reason his lip was bleeding in two places and he had a growing bruise on the side of his head and his balls were aching had anything to do with some blonde girl with a nasty temper and a pretty damn good right hook. Though about half of those hats had been from the purse she'd been carrying. Steve hadn't exactly realized how goddamn lethal a loaded purse could be.

He wouldn't have gone to the clinic at all if he'd had anything to do with it, but some good samaritan apparently thought it was the only option and dragged him there, dropping him off and promptly ditching him while Steve's face was being patched up. There were dark patches on his face where bruises were starting to redden, and they'd probably be black and blue soon enough. A couple of those butterfly bandages here and there, and he was good to go.

Suffice to say, Steve was sort of veteran at this. His face could apparently take a lot of shit.

It was as he was headed toward the door, hands stuffed in his coat pockets, when he felt a hand on his arm, tugging him around to face the dark-haired, wide-eyed nurse. "Wait. We need help, please. We're understaffed and--"

"Whoa-- You know I'm not a doctor, right?" he told her, scrunching up his nose and nearly turning to go. That was when the lights overhead started to flicker, Steve's wide brown eyes darted upward. Aw fuck. What was happening around here now? Why Misty Hollow? Why had they all decided Misty Hollow was the place to live?

The barrier did a lot of good, even overcompensating in cases like poor Crowley who had no intentions of feasting on the blood of virgins but managed to get flagged as Evil anyway. It wasn't infallible despite doing a lot of good. Sometimes the seed of something nefarious smuggled its way in by first laying dormant. Sometimes the world itself decided to spawn a zombie right smack in the middle of town square.

She didn't know what the explanation behind little possessed Natalie Shah was, and she didn't have the godforsaken time to ask. Only that the seven-year old girl with a spiderweb network of gruesome black veins cracking across her face had managed to escape her ward and was rapidly performing a contortionist's backwards crabwalk across the glossy tiled floor. Her head was twisted the other way around, her rictus smile pointed directly at Steve as the lights continued to flicker on and off.

Bursting through the set of double doors into the waiting room with a gurney, thick straps dangling from its sides, Wanda was hot on her heels.

"Be careful!" cried the nurse as she chased after the child.

    "I know!"

Little Natalie Shah scuttled past Steve and started skittering impressively up the wall, whereupon the nurse finally managed to pry her off after facing the risk of snarls foaming from the mouth and scratches from nails that were much too long to be normal. Together, they managed to drag her kicking and banshee shrieking onto the bed of the gurney, just as a shout for help from behind that set of double doors alerted the nurse from her task. "I'll go check that out," she stammered out, before paying Steve one final imploring look.

Wanda lifted her eyes to the hapless young man as she struggled to restrain Natalie without hurting her. "Your name is Steve, right?" Great. That totally made him qualified. "I need you to hold her down, right now!"

Nothing about what happened next was okay as those double doors burst open and a person -- no, a creature -- came scuttering out and across the floor in a way that didn’t look wholely human. Or human at all, to be honest. “What the fuck, what the fuck?!” Steve could feel the panic rising in his chest as he stumbled backward, pressing against the counter as though he could somehow create more distance between himself and what was happening. He’d never wished so hard for a gun or that goddamn bat he’d had out at that creepy-ass house on the edge of the barrier.

A voice he didn’t realize then was familiar mentioned him by name and Steve’s gaze whipped toward the dark-haired woman staring at her, the look in her eye urgent as though there were nothing more important than this. And he fucking believed her even if his instinct wanted to drag him back out the front door of the damn clinic and put all of this behind him.

Could he do that in good conscience, though?

“What?! Are you-- Are you fucking serious right now?!” Honestly, Steve was too busy freaking the fuck out to think about his conscience, as he watched her struggle to restrain the girl on her own. Fuck, fuck, fuck, she was serious. And so, after a couple of seconds, Steve groaned out a sound as though he were gonna be so pissed if this got him killed before pushing against the counter and crossing the space toward them, his hands sort of hovering over the writhing black-veined young woman, not sure where to put them. Eventually, on hand clamped down over a shoulder and the other over an arm, and the amount of strength he had to use to even try to keep her down was enormous. “Jesus fucking Christ, what is happening?!”

The girl kept screeching and flailing even as Steve clamped down and Wanda made haste to strap a belt over her torso. Her chest rose against the bind, back thudding against the gurney noisily as her free arm rose up to scratch with cracked and yellow nails at the young man roped into assisting.

Wanda, of course, couldn't exactly address his panicking in her endeavor to secure the straps, one by one, around the bed on swift feet. It was the best she could do. Her face had settled into a look of stone and all her anxiety internalized even as her heartbeat raced. Oh god, at least she could call this a bad day even by Misty Hollow standards.

Finally, all but one of the legs were secure. The gurney was still trembling, the girl snapping her teeth at the air.

"Can you get that one?" The leg. Still kicking violently away. Awful, awful screeching still going. "I'll be- I'll be back!" she reassured with another meaningful look, before racing off into those double doors for... something.

On the way there, her foot slipped against another slippery freaking banana peel that someone apparently forgot to pick up. Wanda stumbled forward, but somehow managed to keep hold of balance before disappearing behind one of the doors.

"What?!" he called after her, one hand clamping down on that damn flailing leg even as his dark eyes shot up just in time to watch the woman's retreating form. Shit. Was this karma? Did this have to do with the dance and how much of a dick he'd been? Who did he have to apologize to to get out of this fucking mess?

Suddenly, he felt a flailing foot kick at his hip. And it was fucking strong, for a girl her size, but there wasn't anything normal about her. This was like a goddamn exorcism and Steve had been involuntarily roped right into it, and maybe it would've been okay despite everything. Maybe it would've been--

    Steve wasn't that lucky.

He'd stumbled back just enough and her flailing about intensified, the gurney shaking and quaking, and she jerked her body to the side again and again and again until the fucking contraption suddenly fell on its side. "Oh my god! Oh my god, what the-- what the fuck do I do?!" The girl was still stuck to the damn thing, and Steve hesitated, holding his hands out like he knew he had to do something but didn't know what. And then he was reaching for the side and the legs of the gurney, trying to yank it back upright again.

    "Fuck-- Fuck-- Fuck!!!"

She returned not a minute later nursing a jar in her arms, all sorts of inscriptions and wards inked about the surface like artworks. She thought she could feel her stomach physically dropping the instant her eyes fell over the gurney on its side, the possessed girl trying to... lurch out of it from the side. Thankfully, to no avail, but oh no.

Stepping over the banana peel this time (that she didn't have the time to do anything about, because look at that) Wanda bounded forward and set the jar off to the side somewhere. She dropped to crouch like she knew what she was doing, as if her limbs weren't operating mindlessly on autopilot with white noise cluttering her thoughts, her hands grappling the other side of the gurney as her gaze rose up to meet Steve in the eye. With luck she did somehow manage to maintain that illusion of authority. "On my count, yeah?" she breathed. "One, two..."

She hoisted her side of the bed up.

... was that spittle on the floor. Just the cherry on top of what made this day so great.

This was it, this was the worst fucking day of his entire life. He felt like he was going insane, which was impressive because he'd had a lot shitty days. Before Pandora. During Pandora. There was seriously no winning at all, no winning whatsoever.

And he'd never even gotten Nancy back.

To his relief, she came back with some ... random jar in her hands that earned a crazy look from Steve when he swung his gaze over there, but a jerk from the gurney caused him to stumble and he readjusted his grip just in time for Wanda to come over and help him with it. Meeting her gaze, he watched intently as she counted and by the three, it had been hoisted upright again and Steve was clamping his hands down on that one leg of hers again, his wide eyes jerking toward the jar.

"What's that? What's that, some kind of-- of magic to ... to curse her back to normal?!" That didn't make any fucking sense, Dustin would've been judging the shit out of him right about now.

Hell, Dustin would've been probably a little more helpful in this situation than Steve was, he reluctantly admitted in the solace of his own head. What was the world coming to?

"Kind of?" She didn't know how to explain it. She didn't have the time or energy to explain it. He'd figure it out by watching anyway. In any case she swept the jar off the floor and pushed it toward him expectantly. "Forget about the leg! Hold this over her face, and close the lid when I tell you to. Can you do that?"

There wasn't any point in waiting for him to supply his answer when she needed him to say yes, already leaving the mysterious jar in his hands as she stepped to the other side of the gurney, over the ... patient... victim... creature's head.

All the while the leg kept kicking in vain at the air, the gurney quivering and quaking. No, no, they had this. It looked worse than how it actually was. They got this, she tried to convince herself, as she lowered her hands on both sides of the girl's restrained head with a strange crimson glow dancing about her fingertips.

If anything, the screeching rose to new and painful heights.

His eyes focused then on her leg, they darted up again as she pushed the jar toward him. He looked confused and alarmed, which wasn't much different to the way he'd look since the second he'd walked in here, but he didn't argue with her either. She seemed to know what the hell she was doing, while he had no fucking idea what was even happening. "Yeah-- Yeah, I can do th--"

He'd been in the middle of positioning the jar over her face when he spotted those wisps of red from her hands, and Steve's eyes went wide. Panic rose in his chest and he suddenly fumbled with the jar, which landed right on the thrashing girl's stomach and then rolled. "Shit!" he ground out, but acted quickly, managing to catch it in his hands and move it right back into place again.

"This is crazy, this is-- this is crazy, this is crazy, this is--"

Lips parting to release a silent cry of dismay, Wanda must have aged forty years (spiritually) in the time it took for the jar to slip from Steve Harington's fingers and for him to scoop it up just at the brink. She thought she might actually cry. Getting another person to hold the damned thing was supposed to be more reliable than multitasking with her telekinesis. Supposed to be more foolproof.

No, no, she couldn't start doubting him now. No time for fuss and second-guesses, when everything was positioned and ready to go.

Her focus shifted back to the shrieking girl, the wisps swirling about her hands seeming to intensify— swirling inside her head through her skull. The color of tar blotted out the girl's eyes as the... makeshift exorcism took its toll. Her jaw snapped wide open as if it weren't wide enough from all the horrible screaming. Miasmic black smoke ejected from her lips, from her nose, the jar in Steve's hands doing the thankless work of catching it so it wouldn't spill into the room and all over their clothes.

The demonic vomiting lasted for longer than a minute, until the smoke was no longer smoke, but an actual tar-like substance. And that did actually splash a little onto Wanda and Steve.

"Close it!" she cried suddenly, loud and frantic over the (still) screeches of the writhing girl. "Close the jar!"

Well, shit. That had been close. He hadn’t actually been looking at Wanda, but he could practically sense the horror and the gaping that was rolling off of her until the moment he was able to find his grip on the damn jar again. Steve felt himself exhale a sigh of relief, but it didn’t last because they were still in the middle of this situation.

And it got worse. Just when he thought it couldn’t get worse, it got worse. The girl on the table, writing around like she was possessed--

    Ha.

Well, she suddenly started vomiting. Into the jar. Well, sort of. It was smoke first until it wasn’t smoke at all, and it was some kind of black tar-like substance instead. The look on Steve’s face couldn’t possibly accurately portray the sheer amount of disgust he was feeling, and he wanted out of this entire clinic more than anything. Hell, he was never coming back, never. Why did people even live in Misty Hollow when shit like this happened? “What the fuck, what the fuck, what the--”

And then Wanda was shouting at him to close the jar, and Steve worked quickly, shaking a little but still managing to clamp and twist the thing shut. “What now?! What now, what do I do?!”

Wanda was staring down at the girl, the abject distress in her brow evaporating little by little as something more akin to relief washed over her. Almost absently, she took ripped open a wet towel packet from one of the stowing compartments on the side of the gurney (there were a few more of the packs along with other miscellaneous knick-knacks from when he'd turned the whole thing over) and began gingerly wiping vestiges of black sludge from her lips.

The varicose veins were receding. The girl almost looked like she was slumbering peacefully.

"I think... I think we're good." She shook her head to herself, blinking rapidly as she attempted to ground herself back into the moment. There were things that still needed to be done, steps to be taken to ensure she was on the full path to recovery. Lots of cleaning to do. "Sorry, can you hang on for another second?" And she was already rolling the girl back behind those mysterious double doors, leaving Steve with the jar of smoke and ooze.

It kind of looked like a lava lamp.

He felt frozen even as Wanda managed to relax as relief washed slowly over her. Steve couldn't seem to do the same, not with that jar still in his hands. He was trying not to look at it as he watched Wanda roll the girl back through those double doors, but eventually, he found himself very slowly dropping his gaze to take a look.

And a distinct shudder ran down his spine.

"Hello?" he called after Wanda when it started to feel as though too much time had passed, uselessly shuffling closer to the doors, though he didn't dare get any closer than that. "H-- Hey-- Are you coming back?" It hadn't actually been that long at all since she'd disappeared through those doors.

"Fuck-- She's not coming back," Steve muttered to himself.

Again, the doors opened sooner than later. She didn't look any less disheveled, stray strands of hair swept in wild directions all over her head, but her hands were cleaner now and held a folded white towel between them. And the girl in the gurney, left behind, for some of the other nurses to tend to.

There was a startled hitch in her steps when Steve appeared much closer than he was before. She was still on edge, her relief warring against her wound up state. Slowly, but surely, with each breath she took there was one less uncomfortable knot in her limbs. "You can keep that, if you want," she suggested with a perfectly straight face, proffering the towel for him to take.

She wasn't referring to the towel.

Finally, the double doors opened again and relief seemed to wash over Steve, though he still looked wound and riled up. He didn't completely understand what had happened, though if somebody asked him to describe it, the words 'some exorcist shit' probably would have left his lips. Staring at the towel she was holding out to him, he hesitated for a second until her words registered to him.

Steve didn't think he'd ever shaken his head so much in his life as he held the jar out to her. "I don't want any souvenirs, thanks," he said, a clear attempt at sarcasm, but it sounded dry as he took the towel with his free hand.

"What the fuck was all that? Is that girl okay? Like ... actually okay now?"

It was worth a shot. Some people would want the souvenir for trophy-keeping, and the black gunk should've been harmless by now. In theory...

Respecting his decision, Wanda traded the towel for the jar without another word.

But then she was shaking her head to herself again as she padded behind the receptionist's desk. Balancing the black jar in one arm, she hauled out a much larger, more colorful one comprised of a trove's worth of candy that was usually displayed at the front of the desk a little at a time. "Yes, you do. Take as much as you want, and... thank you." When she looked up to him again, the dry and dull and blank parts of her visage had broken into something more sincere and actually apologetic, at a closer glance. "Her name's Natalie. She's fine now. Might take another day or two before she's in any condition to start accepting visitors, but... much better. Than before."

Clearing her throat, she hadn't forgotten to add, with a direct if not still vaguely apologetic look to his eyes, "Are you okay?"

He didn't know what he expected as she took the jar from him, besides the wave of relief for not having to hold onto it anymore, but it definitely wasn't the much more colorful jar of sweets she pulled out. Steve eyed it like it didn't belong here for some reason, like he was suspicious of it. Except he couldn't deny that he may have had a sudden craving for something really sweet and really sugary.

Distractedly, Steve looked back to Wanda, hesitating. "I'm ... freaking out a little," he said, but that was probably a little more than obvious. Clearing his throat, he suddenly reached out to grab a fistful of candy from the jar, wasting no time at all in pocketing it.

Right, well. An uncertain look crossed her eyes as she glanced from the candy to the wretched darkness simmering in its own container. Finally, she seemed to decide on something. She edged back toward him but stopped a solid few steps away. And reached forward to pat him very awkwardly a few times on the arm.

Then she withdrew her hand back from across the distance, sliding it back to her side as if half-unsure of what to do with it. As it so happened the more she spoke the easier it got, like finding herself back in a rhythm. "You did great, Steve." But did he? Did he really? For the purposes of moving forward and pushing the experience of that adrenaline rush entirely behind them, she was going to go with yes. He'd held both the jar and the fort valiantly, aside from one fixable goof or another. All perfectly understandable too. "I shouldn't keep you here longer than I already have. But, I owe you one. If you ever need anything looked at, like..." She gestured at the bruises on his face in a wishy-washy manner. "...or something, give me a ring, yeah?"

And for the first time this encounter, she offered a light and encouraging smile.

She was probably giving him way more credit than he deserved seeing as he'd almost dropped the jar in the first place, but it could've been worse. He could've actually dropped it, but by some miracle, he didn't. By some miracle, it had all gotten done without any casualties. Right? Not that Steve was aware of what had happened before he'd gotten here, and to be totally honest, he didn't want to know.

"Thanks," he muttered distractedly, giving her a slight nod of the head as he took a few steps back and then finally turned to go. Maybe a little bit more quickly than he'd meant to. An hour ago, he'd thought the shittiest part of his day had been getting his ass kicked by a girl out on the streets.

    Dead wrong.

    THE END
