Dustin checked his watch. Okay, he still had a little over an hour before he needed to be back at the lamppost with the red paint splash to meet up with Mike and share information. Maybe one of them would actually find out where the heck they were and how to get back. Dustin wasn’t sure if the weirdest part was that this place looked so oddly normal, or the fact that normal people were coming in and out of their houses and seemed blissfully unaware of the fact that out in the forest weird D&D style Assassin Vines were hauling kids off into the woods. Or were they normal? What if this was like invasion of the bodysnatchers or something and all of them were pod people from another dimension?

He tried to convince himself that was impossible and that real life didn’t work like that but the recent two years of his life were telling him otherwise. Instead he just tried to focus on looking out for anything that might help them, without actually having to go talk to strangers seeing as that might get them arrested by the FBI or the energy company or worse.

He shifted his weight back on the seat of his bike and coasted a little bit, gaze sweeping back and forth over the road. There weren’t many cars, he’d noticed, which was kind of weird. He raised back up onto his feet and pedalled standing up, swerved up onto the curb to cut the corner of on the street and biked onto the next row of unfamiliar looking houses and people in an unfamiliar place. Weird. Then again he probably looked a bit weird too considering he still had his ghostbusters costume on from Halloween. His proton pack was starting to look a little worse for wear on his back as it had survived a night in the damp woods. There was a half empty bag of candy swinging dangerously off his hip and the ghost trap containing Dart on his other side.

Suddenly a vehicle trundled around the corner, it was a bus and looked like it had some sort of automaton in the driving seat. The whole thing looked like it was running on clockwork and Dustin gawked at is as it went past. Mental, he thought to himself and then pedalled and turned – just in time to see he was literally about to bike right into a person on the street. Dustin swerved toward a garden and slammed the brakes on hard enough that the wheels slid out from under him and he had to stick a leg out to stop himself going flying and faceplanting into a bed of pink cyclamens.

”STEVE?!” He exclaimed in surprise as he nearly dropped the bike.

Okay, so the good news was that he wasn't dead. And being around Beth and her group of not so friendly friends, or her one not so friendly friend who apparently came equipped with a crossbow, had definitely made him wonder whether or not he was gonna get out of that house alive. As it turned out, though, he'd been staying with her, getting his bearings, and by that, of course, he meant, waiting for his face to stop hurting quite so much and trying to let sink in just what the fuck was going on here. He didn't even know if he believed it. A couple years back, he sure as hell wouldn't have, but things had happened in his life to make him question basically everything.

So why question a town in the middle of woods infested by crazy ... fairy magic or whatever, which also happened to be in the middle of an entirely new world some crazy god (or ... not god, because he'd been hearing both) lady had put them in for shits and giggles? And that was just one of the many theories. That just happened to be the theory behind the name. Pandora.

Steve couldn't remember a single thing about that story. He'd probably been preoccupied when it came up in class. Sleeping or tossing stupid rolled up notes around the room.

He was taking a walk, taking in just how normal everything in this place looked for a place that was apparently the opposite of normal, when he turned a corner. Hands shoved into the pockets of his jacket, they suddenly were pulled out, palms up at the sight of a bike headed straight for him, but whoever was on that bike, a kid with suspiciously familiar dark curly hair, swerved off and away from him.

Whirling around, eyes wide, Steve followed the kid's path toward a garden and, slowly, his brows lifting, half expecting him to end up in the bed of flowers he'd been headed toward. Sucked for whoever planted them, but in the end, the flowers were untouched as the kid stopped himself and cried out Steve's name in surprise.

Yup. It was definitely who he'd suspected it was as he finally turned and got a good glimpse of his face. Steve's was still bruised up from his fight with Billy, but easily recognizable. "... Shit, of course you'd be here. Why is it, when crazy shit happens, you idiots have something to do with it?" he said, closing the distance between he and Dustin, an exasperated look on his face. Honestly, though? He was glad to see him, even if it didn't seem that way. He was glad to see him because if he was gonna be riding around on a bike in a new, apparently magical world where fairy things were enchanting trees and attacking them outside of town, Steve wanted to be watching him like a hawk.

Because he was Dustin Henderson, and he was gonna do something stupid.

Thankfully the bike was okay despite the near crash into the flower bed of someone’s garden. Steve’s face on the other hand? Well, Dustin had seen him look better if he was honest. Aware that he was wrecking someone’s garden with skidded tire tracks, Dustin waddled the bike off the grass and back over and onto the sidewalk as Steve approached, looking all the worse for wear the closer he got. Dustin couldn’t help but gawk at him a little bit. He looked like he’d taken a full on beating. Worse than that time he and Jonathan tried to beat each other up in the alley that time, this one looked like he’d actually properly lost a fight and his face had taken the pummelling for it. It also looked like old injury rather than fresh, the sort where it had scabbed over and he bruises were coming out to make a nice rainbow effect on his face.

Dustin perched on the bike seat, one foot on the pedal and one foot balancing him on the floor, the candy sack from Halloween was still dangling at his hip and he felt a bit out of place in his costume with Steve there looking like he’d just lost a fight with a boxing glove wearing grass rake. They probably looked like a weird pair standing there on the street corner but all in all Dustin kind of felt like this might be the least weird thing that had happened since he’d gotten here in Pandora.

”What happened to your face?” Dustin immediately asked and reached up a hand like he was about to lean over and poke Steve in the face just to see how bad it was, ”Did you get stitches?”

It looked bad. Dustin wasn’t sure if he was about to regret asking what did it considering where they were from and what they’d all faced, although it really did look old. Maybe Steve was new here and it was an old injury. Which, completely unrelated, reminded him that he wasn’t the only one here and Mike was trekking somewhere about Misty Hollow also trying to look for people and landmarks. Hopefully he’d catch up soon because now at least there was a sort of semi-responsible adult figure around. Dustin used the term lightly because it was Steve and while he was cool, Dustin wasn’t sure he was necessarily responsible. Nevertheless it was better than being alone!

”Mike’s here too!” He blurted out suddenly, ”Are Lucas and Will with you? Or Nancy?” he looked hopeful, ”Anyone?”

There may have been a part of him that was slightly relieved to see Dustin's face. Maybe because he was the only thing that was actually familiar in this hellhole. This hellhole where he'd had things flung at him, been threatened with a knife, and been threatened with a crossbow. Or maybe it was because despite that, Dustin was just casually riding around on his bike apparently and Steve didn't want anything to happen to him while he was also obliviously riding around on his book.

The worst part was that Dustin wasn't completely oblivious about everything if the day spent with him prior to coming to Pandora had proven anything at all.

    What a little shit.

"Uh-- Hey, don't touch it," he said, recoiling with a grimace when he saw Dustin's hand shoot out toward his face like he wanted to touch it. Of course he wanted to touch it, jesus christ.

To the news that Mike was here, he felt the same almost uncharacteristic swell of relief in his chest. Mostly because it was better that someone knew he was here rather than having him wander the woods all by himself. Visibly, though? Visibly, Steve could probably have looked a lot more thrilled. "Great." The mention of his friends and the mention, especially, of Nancy had him withering just a little bit and he sighed, shaking his head. "I haven't bumped into anyone e-- Wait." He paused. "Where's Mike? Why aren't you two together?"

It looked like it hurt and it was an instinctive need to poke at it and see how much it hurt for confirmation purposes, but Steve leaned back out of the way and Dustin couldn’t reach so he dropped his hand away and stared at him instead. He sort of though Steve really ought to stop getting into fights considering he kept losing them, and there was no doubt in his mind that Steve had lost this fight too because nobody looked like that if they’d won one. He itched to ask why he looked like that but there were also a lot of other things he needed to clarify first, such as whether anyone else was with Steve or not.

Disappointingly he confirmed that he was by himself and nobody else was with him, Dustin dramatically sighed in exasperation, as though it was Steve’s fault he was by himself rather than the situation itself. He looked around slightly and frowned, still no Lucas or Will then, no Nancy either, nobody but himself, Mike and Steve. Of all people why did it have to be Steve?

”Mike went the other way, we split up to cover more ground trying to find people and agreed to meet back where we started when we finished looking around. I have a bike so I was going to do more of the town…” Dustin explained and tried to ignore the fact that splitting up was a terrible idea and hadn’t been particularly favourable. Splitting up was what people did when they were about to walk right into trouble but as it had turned out he’d found Steve instead.

”When did you get here?” he asked, looking back and refocusing back onto Steve’s face, then inevitably back to the mess of his face. ”And what happened to your face, Steve?” He repeated because he’d not got an answer, ”Did that happen here?” He asked and sounded a little wary.

They split up. They fucking split up, of course they did.

It was clear from the way he let out an exasperated sigh and rolled his eyes to the side a bit just how he felt about that answer and it took Steve a second to really focus on Dustin's words again. Honestly, it was a miracle he heard anything this kid said because half of it was just that ridiculous. How he'd ended up just a little fond of him, he had no goddamn idea.

"What?" Steve scrunched up his nose a little, which didn't last long given how much a simple gesture like that hurt for his beaten face. It was healing, slowly but surely, but that had yet to make any of the pain any less than it was. "No, this was from when I saved your sorry asses from Billy Hargrove." He moved on as though he should've known that already, and as though he didn't really want to actually linger on the fact that he'd gotten the shit beat out of him by that guy.

"So, let me get this straight, Dustin. You two end up in some weird unfamiliar town, and your first instinct is to split up? Who lets you idiots do anything?"

Of course they’d split up. It made sense at the time. Dustin knew it was dangerous but what choice did they have and anyway this place kind of looked like a regular neighbourhood, it just happened to be in a town they were unfamiliar with. It was probably fine. It was probably safer than Hawkins was! Dustin could see the look on Steve’s face said it all though he thought it was stupid splitting up, thankfully his own stupidity didn’t come up as a subject and instead Steve’s did. Which naturally Dustin latched onto.

”Who’s Billy Hargrove?” He asked with a furrowed brow, the name sounded familiar but he wasn’t sure until it clicked. He knew the surname. ”Hargrove…is that Max’s brother? Whoa, son of a bitch, did you get in a fight with Billy Hargrove?! Are you crazy?” He asked incredulously and gawked at him. After a second he added, ”Does it hurt?” And once again reached out to poke him, but the comment on splitting up distracted him and he snatched his hand away and made a sort of defensive noise of exasperation.

”Uh, have you looked around? This place is safer than Hawkins.” The hand that had been about to poke at Steve gestured around the quiet suburban surroundings. Pretty little houses lined the street, gardens and front yards looked neat and tidy. There weren’t many people around, in fact hardly any at all. It was quiet, birds were singing in the distance. Nothing was out of order or strange. ”Wait, why are you here?” Dustin asked suddenly and raised an eyebrow, ”Did the woods take you too? Were there vines? Vines took me and Mike but we’re pretty sure it wasn’t anything to do with the Upside Down, this place is all alive and …nice.” He started, rambling cheerily about their surroundings without really stopping long enough to let Steve answer.

The longer Steve stared at Dustin, the more ridiculous this all seemed to him. First, they'd split up because they were dumb kids with literally zero self-preservation skills. And now, Dustin apparently had completely forgotten about him beating up Billy Hargrove.

Well. Sort of. He'd gotten some hits in.

Steve was too busy gawking at the kid to give him a real answer to his questions, especially when he reached out again to try to touch his face, to which he leaned back and promptly swatted his hand away. "Dude, no, why do you wanna touch it so bad?" Seriously, what was with kids and wanting to touch stuff like that? Had he been like that when he'd been Dustin's age? Steve had been a lot of things. Steve was still a lot of things.

Eventually, though, Steve had taken too long to respond and Dustin just kept on going, calling this place safer than Hawkins. He liked to think he'd believe that anything was safer than Hawkins, but he saw those vines and he felt them, too. So had Dustin, apparently. "Uh huh ... So you and Mike get dragged through the ground by some freaky mutant demon vine things, but it's all good because it's apparently alive and nice? And you're going for a nice bike ride through the nice and alive town?" Steve was looking at him like he was crazy.

"Did you get dropped on your head between Jonathan's place and now?" There were about a million reasons for that question, but rather than elaborate, Steve turned on his heel. "Alright, here's the deal," he started, sticking his hand out to gesture back to him as he started walking. "We're gonna go find your friend and then we're gonna find a way back to Hawkins, because I bet your parents are having a field day with you two missing now, too."

At that point, he'd looked back to Dustin to see if he was following, and in the process completely missed the slippery yellow banana peel his sneaker stepped down on.

And down Steve went, just like that.

Dustin didn’t bother answering Steve’s first question because he thought it was stupid. Duh, why’d you think he wanted to touch it so bad? He wanted to know if it hurt and Dustin was that kind of kid to poke it and then go ‘does that hurt’. Not out of malice or spite but just because that was just who Dustin was. He couldn’t help himself. Anyway he still didn’t get any kind of answer he wanted which was leading him to think Steve was avoiding talking about it because he’d been beaten to a pulp and Billy Hargrove had probably walked away lightly bruised by comparison. Dustin didn’t know what it was about Steve but he kind of felt sorry for him because he kept picking fights he couldn’t win. He admired his determination though!

”When you put it like that-” Dustin frowned flatly at him, ”You’re making it sound worse. You’re not helping at all.”

He did however notice that Steve had said ‘between Jonathan’s place and now’ and his face crumpled up in confusion. What in hell was he talking about? He’d not been anywhere near Byer’s place? He’d been at home after trick-or-treating - hence his current ghostbusters costume that he was wearing – and then he’d been taken right off his own driveway. He’d not been near Jonathan’s? Dustin opened his mouth to protest that Steve must have hit his head because that wasn’t right when Steve got there first and he closed it and watched as Steve started walking and talking simultaneously.

Dustin rolled his eyes and sighed skywards, as though he was imploring a higher power to save him from Steve’s logic and plans. Then he pushed his bike along and set off walking to catch up, seeing as without him there was only one other person Dustin knew in this place and that was Mike who was…over there somewhere in town. Seemed like his best option was to stick with Steve even if he did have a dumb obvious idea.

”Right, because neither of us had thought about trying to get home before you came along.” Dustin replied sarcastically, threw a leg over his bike and pedalled to catch up. His sarcasm levels rose a little for his next words, “Everyone pay attention, Great Steve Harrington has a Big Plan, how would we have coped without-”

Then suddenly Steve was windmilling and going down like a sack of bricks. He landed in what looked like an painful heap and Dustin’s initial response was to snort out a laugh because it had been hilarious. His second instinct was immediately concern because Steve was already injured and he might have hurt himself again. Dustin hopped back off his bike and hurried to his side.

”Woah, buddy, are you okay?!” He looked over to see a slimy banana peel that Steve’s foot had slipped on, ”I swear you need a minder or something, Steve, you’re going to get yourself killed.” Which was funny coming from Dustin right then, ”Did you hit your head?”

Dustin Henderson was a sarcastic little shit. Maybe he honestly didn’t a know a ton about the kid, but that much he definitely knew. The kid probably would have called that one of his endearing qualities, but Steve had other words for it, and yet despite that fact, it was probably equally one of the reasons he didn’t mind him so much. As much as he rolled his eyes and as much as he outwardly groaned at the things that he said, he sure as hell could keeps things interesting.

Well, most of the time. Other times, he kept things stupid. And other times, he said things that were so far over Steve’s head that the teenager was left wondering if he’d missed a class somewhere along the way.

The other thing he knew was that the kid’s first instinct as Steve suddenly hit the ground was to snort out a laugh despite the sound of the teenager’s pained groan. His body moved sluggishly on the ground, not quite getting up but trying to find some kind of position that didn’t just hurt. Not possible. Everything hurt. Blinking his eyes open again, he saw Dustin staring down at him, looking from the banana peel -- a goddamn banana peel -- back to his face again.

“Don’t you fucking touch it,” he said, as though he had this immediate feeling Dustin was gonna reach out and try to touch his head again. Grimacing, he finally started to get to his feet again, wobbling slightly and purposefully leaning away from Dustin as though emphasizing the fact that he wasn’t gonna need his help even if he did offer it.

    What a fucking trainwreck.
