    April 29th

After the incident in the elevator that she'd not been able to get out of, Trish had found herself walking through a place that was definitely not New York. Her phone was useless, the signal dead, and, not for the first time today, things were out of her control. Of all the goddamn days for something like this to happen...

But what was happening? Was she dreaming? Was this a side-effect from what hopefully was her new powers? (Catching her phone like that couldn't be just a coincidence.)

Catching sight of herself in a shop window, Trish sighed. She looked a mess. Not as much of one as she had been on Simpson's inhaler, but she looked paler than ever, her eyes rimmed with dark circles. No fucking wonder; she hadn't slept since what had happened that night...and having her mother fuss around her wasn't helping. Even if Dorothy was now the only person she had left.

It had to be done. It was the only way...that woman was going to get her sister killed. So why couldn't she stop thinking about the look on Jess' face, moments before she'd closed her apartment door, effectively shutting Trish out of her life?

Someone roughly bumped her shoulder, sending their coffee cup flying from their grip. On instinct, Trish reached forward and grabbed the cup and the shirt of the man, before either could fall to the ground. With a breathless "thanks", they took their cup and continued on their way.

Even with how she felt, Trish couldn't help but give a small smile as she looked in the direction they walked. She might have nearly died, but this was worth it.

Her smile faltered and soon fell from her face when, from out of the crowd, a very familiar leather jacket and head of shining raven hair appeared. Trish would know Jessica Jones from any distance...and for once, she didn't know how to act. Jess was the one person she couldn't put on a show for. And minutes ago, they'd both walked away from each other's lives.

As she tried to decide whether to make herself known, Trish wanted to know what the hell she, or they, were doing here. How had they ended up in the same place?

Jess really wasn't doing all that great.

There were circles under her eyes, and she looked, if possible, even thinner due to her diet of whiskey with the odd sort of food when presented. She was tired, on edge, full of guilt and pain and grief and the nightmares that plagued her when she closed her eyes were enough to prevent her from slumbering.

Today she couldn't really wallow in misery as her fire lizard needed a few things to keep him going, and that, in turn, kept her going. Throwing on her jacket with Kayser perched on her shoulder, she had plans of going out, getting what she needed for him, grab some more whiskey and then drink until she felt somewhat human. Which never worked but hey, million times the charm, right?

It was Kayser who spotted Trish first, recognizing her immediately even with the large gap from when he last saw her. Claws dug into her shoulder and Jess hissed - though she welcomed the slight pain his claws provided. With a half annoyed sigh of what, she got the impression from her companion that made her stop dead in her tracks. Time slowed and then stopped and she wondered when she had stopped breathing.

Even as she turned around, seeing the familiar blond hair and bright eyes, he adopted sister and best friend she had cast out of her life before being pulled back into this godforsaken hellhole.

    Trish.

    I need you

Followed up with the image of Trish standing there, weapon pointed after she had killed her mother. Time and being a literal world away had given her a little nudge and she understood the actions even if she didn't wholly approve.

Jess had jumped down and attacked Trish, sending her flying after the murder of her mother - those memories replayed in her head, making her sick to her stomach each round. She'd hurt Trish, physically hurt her, something she had promised to never do after all the shit Dorothy put her daughter through.

"Trish?" Her voice was small, as if talking any louder might shatter the illusion before her.

As she drank in the sight of Jessica, she noticed how thin she was, her skin pale even for her. Had...had she been the cause of this? What had she done?

She’d tried to protect Jess, be the hero that she needed for a change, and instead had screwed up her life more than it already was. She remembered the day she’d dropped what she believed to be her sister’s family’s ashes on her desk; a callous move in hindsight, but she had told herself it was for the best, that it was time for Jess to move on and start looking forward. But had Trish really done that for her sister, or for herself, as a selfish way to further her own interests into IGH?

Trish took note of the creature perched on Jess’ shoulder, but right now, what mattered was the woman herself.

The voice that emitted from the dark-haired woman was not one of anger or resentment, which, in another time, Trish might have been relieved about. But the small sound that came with Jess uttering her name was enough to bring tears to her eyes. And she wasn’t a crier. Neither of them was.

She wanted to close the gap between them, wrap her arms around Jess and never let go. But the thought of being rejected, being shoved away, was too great. So, she settled for moving a few steps closer, hands clasped together.

“Jess...I...” Trish started to say, lost for words. “You’re here. How...when..?”

There was no guarantee Jess would even answer her, but she couldn’t shake the look her sister had given upon spotting her. None of this made sense, and that was saying something.

This whole thing wasn't the fault of Trish. Jessica could throw the blame at her and walk away though that was unfair and not true. Things might not have gone this way had they made different choices, but that was the thing about having done something - hindsight was an amazing thing and no matter the wishes for it to be there before something happened was merely a wish. A folly of a dream.

She supposed this had to happen. It was always headed this way from the moment Dorothy had her claws in her daughter, the abuse suffered making her want to feel powerful. And then Jess, broken and scarred who came along with powers that an abuse survivor could only dream about. Saving each other time after time, it was like a lit explosive waiting to go boom.

They could change it, fix it, get by it. Jess was not as blinded by guilt and hate and pain as she was back home. All the memories and experiences that had crashed upon her when she arrived once again had stripped her of that thick armor. Leaving her alone and wanting and cold.

My mom died because of you, Jess's inner voice spoke, she killed yours, while she still has her own. Jess had threatened Dorothy but never attempted to kill her. It's not the same. Dorothy was abusive, but she wasn't a killer. Another inner voice spoke, an internal war. Trish's timely arrival had saved Jess from being shot to death by the police, or possible arrest for aiding a serial murderer. Death could have been preferable, Jess knew that Trish would never forgive herself knowing she could do something but sat idly by.

Her jaw tightened with emotion, a choice being made. She was at the crossroads where her next movement was crucial.

Ignoring the chirp on her shoulder as the fire lizard felt through their bond, Jess strode forward, reaching out for Trish's wrist to pull her the rest of the way and into a tight hug.

This was the moment that would change everything. There was every possibility that Jess would walk away, just as she had done before, after the shock of seeing her had worn off. And honestly, Trish wouldn't blame her. She'd just have to figure out this new place alone, but it was a small price to pay if Jess was gonna be better off without her. As much as she didn't want to be out of her life.

Her breath hitched as Jess suddenly came forward and took her wrist, and then she found herself in a huge. Trish exhaled, the corners of her mouth twitching, before her arms came up and curled themselves around her best friend, being careful of the animal on her shoulder. It was only then did the tears spring from her eyes, silently.

Time appeared to have stopped, and Trish didn't know how long it was before she broke the silence. "Jess, I'm so sorry." Even if she had thought it was the best thing to do in a situation where there was no other way out, the weight of just how much she'd hurt Jess had finally caught up with her, combined with the hug, something she had thought she would never get again.

Trish was soft, soft, and safe. Like old times, Jess found herself easing a little, her shoulders less stiff and her posture a little more relaxed. The time away from her had been good really, letting her wounds heal as much as they could - she knew that if Trish had been here when she first arrived then she would have thrown her out of her life.

    Again.

None of that mattered to her now and for a few shining moments she was able to just forget. Unfortunately everything would come crashing back afterward, leaving her to reel but that was okay.

"I know." Jess's voice was soft, almost breaking. That small snide voice in her head wanted to roar, to tell Trish she didn't want to hear her apologies. That nothing would bring her mom back.

    "I forgive you."

    "I forgive you."

She didn't know what had changed for Jess to forgive her; she knew her sister did not just let things go that easily, especially something as important to her as this. But what mattered for now was that she might just have Jessica back in her life, even after how badly she'd screwed up. There were questions, and things she needed to tell the other woman, but she leaned into the hug for a few seconds more, as though this might be dream, and she'd wake up back in her mother's apartment, alone.

She was still worried about how Jess looked, too, although she wasn't exactly at her best right now either. Perhaps they could work this out together, if she wanted to. Just because Trish was forgivien might not mean that Jess fully wanted her back, and she wasn't going to push it, as much the blonde needed and wanted this.

Jess held onto Trish a little tighter, not enough to bruise or break bones but enough to convey just how much she missed and needed her. Like a lifeline she had desperately sought out all these months.

"I know you probably have a lot of questions." Jess left that open, not saying anything else in case this was an illusion that would break the moment she let go.

She pulled back, but instead linked her hands with Jess's. "I do...and there's something I need to tell you too." Trish then looked around, at this world, one where nothing felt familiar. And it wasn't like she'd just been transported to Bermuda or somewhere - something felt wrong.

She focused on Jess once more, barely wanting to let her out of her sight. "...can we go somewhere and talk? A place where there's not so many...prying eyes." Her question was phrased more awkwardly than usual, given the delicate state of their relationship.

Jess desperately wanted to make a sarcastic quip that was edged with poison - the digging of Kayer's back claw against her neck warned her against the idea. He was too tuned into her emotions, more than she was herself, and it was always nice to have that little nudge.

A human she could punt. An animal she couldn't(and wouldn't, lets be real here. As much of a badass she was, she wasn't a sociopath who liked hurting animals).

Instead she tightened her grip on Trish's hands and then spoke. "My apartment is nearby. It doesn't have any prying eyes unless you count the cockroaches." It was a joke, mostly, aimed because the apartment back home had them. Not as much to be called an infestation.

So that was what she did, leading the way without breaking the hand holding, before closing the door behind her. "It's less crappy than my old apartment." Jess shrugged. "So what did you want to tell me?"

She might have smiled at Jess leading her towards her apartment, or at the quip she made before they left. She felt something she'd rarely felt going to Jess's place; anxious. And scared. Time had seemed to stop around them, as though they were the only two in the world at the minute, and Trish felt disoriented as she was led through the streets. It wasn't important anyhow. She wanted to know what Jess had been doing, how long she'd been here, who the animal on her shoulder was. If she was...coping. By the looks of things, her sister wasn't.

Trish nodded, surveying her surroundings. "It's definitely you," she remarked with a genuine tone; it wasn't a comment meant to be deriding. Even though Jess's apartment had always contrasted vastly to her own, she realised it felt more real, as cliche as that sounded. Trish had surrounded herself with the finest money could buy, and to be fair, she did like that style and enjoyed making money that her mother couldn't take from her. But part of it, she realised, was to perhaps create a barrier between her and her issues, which had never fully resolved themselves. If Trish Walker looked the best, looked the part, then she could convince herself nothing could stop her.

"I..." It was weird being so lost for words, when Trish had always been more the talker of the two, filled with enthusiasm and ideas. It was hard to explain, but Jess would understand. It was more the context of how it happened that was hard. "This is gonna sound crazy, but hear me out. Throw something at me, when I least expect it...a glass, a bottle...your friend." She nodded to Jess's shoulder.

"Take a seat. Have a glass of water or - nope just water." Jess had scoured her fridge for perhaps juice though it was pretty bare in terms of food and drink.

She drew herself up and peered from the kitchen.

    What?

Jess looked at her with a bit of confusion. Why ask her that? "If this is something to do with you feel guilty and deserving of it, I don't see how that helps." Jess remarked, though she had her doubts that was what it was. Especially when her fire lizard was involved indirectly, though before she could, he already leaped from her shoulder to settle on her desk.

There wasn't much she could throw at Trish that would be soft enough. Still, she sat down, all appearances telling Trish that she wasn't going to do what was asked.

In a split second moment, Jess had grabbed the nearest glass and threw it, perhaps a little harder than intended, and really hoping that Trish had a plan if it hit her.

She lingered as Jess went to the kitchen, much like she had seemed outside the door of Jess’s old apartment. Wherever they were, Jess didn’t seem phased, but that was like her – anyway, she was glad Jess wasn’t living on the streets or worse, although she could take care of herself.

“No, no, it’s…” Although Jess knew her well; it had crossed her mind that having something thrown at her might be the least she deserved, remembering how Jess had thrown her to the ground. She watched as the…was it a lizard? Settled onto the desk. She’d never known her sister to have pets, but it was nice to see she had some kind of comfort nearby. They seemed very close.

She was about to follow Jess and sit, when a glass came flying at her. Oh, she was good. But whilst Trish in the past might have flinched, or even attempted to duck, she caught the glass perfectly. More to the point, she barely reacted to the object coming towards her, moving only what was necessary, mainly her arm and hand.

No matter the situation, Jess loathed to even do what she had done. Trish had enough experience with abuse from her mother than a flying glass might have caused a reaction and -

Turns out she was overreacting. The glass didn't even touch her, getting caught before it hit and Jess arched an eye in surprise.

"So it worked." Jess didn't need to continue to explain. They both knew why this happened and Jess flared with anger at the fact her sister would willingly risk death just for abilities. "Was it worth all of what happened?" There was bitterness there. Not just for the death of her mother but how Jess almost lost Trish.

And would have still lost her had this forsaken world not interfered.

"So you got what you always wanted. Congratulations."

It was hollow and unfair and yet she didn't care. She should have been happy because now Trish had what she always wanted. And in many ways, Jess felt almost threatened - that if Trish had powers and could save herself, then what good was Jess for? She was pretty shit at everything else. Protecting Trish had been something she was good at.

Kayser sensed it and reached a claw out, his eyes going from Jess to Trish, not able to tell the other that there were deeper issues here. Alas he lacked the ability to talk and so he sent flashes to Jess, who pointedly ignored him and went to pour herself a glass of whiskey, decided to hell with glasses and drank straight from the bottle.

Trish stood for a moment, glass in hand, before she put it down, bristling at Jess’s reaction. She knew her sister wouldn’t have taken this news lightly, considering what had happened – at the time, Trish had been resentful and punished Jess for rescuing her from being experimented on. Her sister had risked her life many times for her, and in that moment, she would have rather died than be saved from potentially gaining powers, no matter how slim the chance.

“I…I’m not sure…” And that was the honest to god truth. Even though this felt right to Trish, she only cared about finding a way to gain powers – the consequences didn’t matter. It was perhaps only since she’d arrived here she’d really stopped to think about what might be left for her now. “I did want them, Jess, and yes, I went to extremes…but it’s still all new to me.”

She looked at the ground, before eyeing her sister again, who had reached for the whiskey, a typical coping mechanism for Jess. “I know I don’t even deserve to ask this of you, but I need help. I want to make this right, do this right. Losing you…it was like I’d finally realised how fucked up what I’d been doing was. Simpson’s inhaler, holding people at gunpoint…” She sighed, “I’m not sorry I got the powers, whatever else they might be besides this. I’ll deal with the consequences because it was my choice. But I’d rather have you there with me.”

Jess swallowed the large gulp of whiskey she had taken, wishing she could just become numb to it all. Not caring would be preferable than the pain she felt within her heart and soul.

"You almost died, Trish. That's more than just extreme." Jess countered, though there was far more beneath the words she was saying. Like how if Trish really did die then who would pick up the shattered pieces of one miss Jones? Or how she would feel losing her only family she had left.

"You don't get it, do you?" Jess felt her jaw tighten. "Sure Dorothy was a real piece of work but at least you had family. You have people who care about you. I only have you." There was a waver in her voice. While Trish was able to talk about her emotions and things with logic, Jess struggled. There was so much more she wanted to say but she wasn't articulate enough.

"I've lost everyone I ever cared about. To lose you as well-"

She shook her head, staring at the floor, her desk; anywhere other than those piercing eyes.

"I'm not a hero Trish. I can't even help myself let alone anyone else. I don't know how to help."

Trish opened her mouth to speak, but no sound came out. She couldn’t imagine how Jess felt, and she never once stopped to think that her sister might really be alone in the world if she died. However, that stubborn part of her wanted to reach out and say she hadn’t died, she was right here, alive and that she’d come out of this a better person, with the means to finally help people.

But hearing how Jess’s voice quivered, she couldn’t. Couldn’t take doing more damage to the one person who’d always protected her, and saved her from death more than once, she was ashamed to say.

“But you can – you really don’t give yourself enough credit, Jess. Look at the impact you’ve had on people.” Trish couldn’t speak for this place, but at home – the fact that her sister had tried to protect not only her, but Hope and her mother, despite the strain it put on her, said more than words ever could.

“...maybe we can help each other?” This came out as merely a suggestion, but there was far more weight to it. Both of them had their own demons that they’d never managed to really overcome.

Jess wanted to scoff. To tell her that she was wrong on so many levels and it was stupid to think she could do something such as help. Every time she did, she made things a thousand times worse. Helping Hope resulted in Bob and Barbara's deaths, and so much more. She could never do anything right.

"How much of that wouldn't have happened if I stayed out of it?" Jess countered, though there wasn't any fight left in her. Trish's suggestion was a good one - Jess couldn't fight her own demons anymore and neither could try yet together they had a chance. Together they could fight those demons and protect one another like they'd done in their youth.

A fancy dream and an even fancier wish. Jessica felt she was too far broken to even be of any use to anyone, and that little voice in her mind was so full of self loathing that it agreed.

"We can try," even her voice held doubts, though she wanted so desperately to not have them. To be able to be as strong and confident as she often acted when inside she was nothing more than crumbling stone and fragile ash. "Can't promise I'll be any good." She shrugged at that, watching as Kayser flicked his tail in approval.

Meanwhile, from her room came a small cat, black and white in color and blinked as she rounded a corner to where they were and then gave a little bit of a meow. That little critter had been with Jess for almost eight or so months now, after a different version of Trish found her outside and had brought her in.

That was a lifetime ago now and Jess knew it. Still, she looked over at her with a softer expression, as if that meow was a signal that even kitty knew Jess could do it.

“You did the right thing, Jess,” Trish countered, and could see from her sister’s tone that she wasn’t being that argumentative. It was unusual for Jess to be worn down so easily, and wondered just how long she’d spent here, alone and ruminating on the what ifs. There were times in the past they’d been apart for a while, but this...Trish wasn’t sure Jess could take it if anything else were to happen.

She let out a small breath and a slight smile briefly appeared on her face; there was a long way to go and she wasn’t naïve to think all of this could be fixed in a week, or even a couple of months. But Trish was willing to try, no matter how long it took.

“That makes two of us,” she admitted, “But at least we know we’re doing something, trying...”

A pitter-patter of feet came from an adjacent room, and Trish was surprised to find a small black and white cat. How many pets had Jess got since she was here?

“Who are your friends?” She nodded to both the lizard-like animal and the cat. She reached out as the cat came closer and stroked its head. It seemed very friendly for someone it didn’t know...

Jess was no hero. She'd tried that once before and that ended up with her under the control of Kilgrave and the horrors that followed. She had never wanted to be a hero. That was Trish's dream that she projected onto the raven haired woman. Did she blame Trish for what happened? Of course not. Back then that hope, that dream had somehow became hers as well.

"I'm not exactly a team person." Jess began, "but at least we know we have each others backs." Jess hated teams, hated working with others because then she cared too much and ended up becoming more vulnerable than if she just went alone. At least with Trish she could keep an eye out, make sure she stayed safe and perhaps Trish would do the same thing in return.

"Kayser is a fire lizard. I got him months ago. A previous version of you found the cat outside and brought her in. Kept her ever since though I haven't figured out much of a name for her."
