    April 29th

After the incident in the elevator that she'd not been able to get out of, Trish had found herself walking through a place that was definitely not New York. Her phone was useless, the signal dead, and, not for the first time today, things were out of her control. Of all the goddamn days for something like this to happen...

But what was happening? Was she dreaming? Was this a side-effect from what hopefully was her new powers? (Catching her phone like that couldn't be just a coincidence.)

Catching sight of herself in a shop window, Trish sighed. She looked a mess. Not as much of one as she had been on Simpson's inhaler, but she looked paler than ever, her eyes rimmed with dark circles. No fucking wonder; she hadn't slept since what had happened that night...and having her mother fuss around her wasn't helping. Even if Dorothy was now the only person she had left.

It had to be done. It was the only way...that woman was going to get her sister killed. So why couldn't she stop thinking about the look on Jess' face, moments before she'd closed her apartment door, effectively shutting Trish out of her life?

Someone roughly bumped her shoulder, sending their coffee cup flying from their grip. On instinct, Trish reached forward and grabbed the cup and the shirt of the man, before either could fall to the ground. With a breathless "thanks", they took their cup and continued on their way.

Even with how she felt, Trish couldn't help but give a small smile as she looked in the direction they walked. She might have nearly died, but this was worth it.

Her smile faltered and soon fell from her face when, from out of the crowd, a very familiar leather jacket and head of shining raven hair appeared. Trish would know Jessica Jones from any distance...and for once, she didn't know how to act. Jess was the one person she couldn't put on a show for. And minutes ago, they'd both walked away from each other's lives.

As she tried to decide whether to make herself known, Trish wanted to know what the hell she, or they, were doing here. How had they ended up in the same place?

Jess really wasn't doing all that great.

There were circles under her eyes, and she looked, if possible, even thinner due to her diet of whiskey with the odd sort of food when presented. She was tired, on edge, full of guilt and pain and grief and the nightmares that plagued her when she closed her eyes were enough to prevent her from slumbering.

Today she couldn't really wallow in misery as her fire lizard needed a few things to keep him going, and that, in turn, kept her going. Throwing on her jacket with Kayser perched on her shoulder, she had plans of going out, getting what she needed for him, grab some more whiskey and then drink until she felt somewhat human. Which never worked but hey, million times the charm, right?

It was Kayser who spotted Trish first, recognizing her immediately even with the large gap from when he last saw her. Claws dug into her shoulder and Jess hissed - though she welcomed the slight pain his claws provided. With a half annoyed sigh of what, she got the impression from her companion that made her stop dead in her tracks. Time slowed and then stopped and she wondered when she had stopped breathing.

Even as she turned around, seeing the familiar blond hair and bright eyes, he adopted sister and best friend she had cast out of her life before being pulled back into this godforsaken hellhole.

    Trish.

    I need you

Followed up with the image of Trish standing there, weapon pointed after she had killed her mother. Time and being a literal world away had given her a little nudge and she understood the actions even if she didn't wholly approve.

Jess had jumped down and attacked Trish, sending her flying after the murder of her mother - those memories replayed in her head, making her sick to her stomach each round. She'd hurt Trish, physically hurt her, something she had promised to never do after all the shit Dorothy put her daughter through.

"Trish?" Her voice was small, as if talking any louder might shatter the illusion before her.

As she drank in the sight of Jessica, she noticed how thin she was, her skin pale even for her. Had...had she been the cause of this? What had she done?

She’d tried to protect Jess, be the hero that she needed for a change, and instead had screwed up her life more than it already was. She remembered the day she’d dropped what she believed to be her sister’s family’s ashes on her desk; a callous move in hindsight, but she had told herself it was for the best, that it was time for Jess to move on and start looking forward. But had Trish really done that for her sister, or for herself, as a selfish way to further her own interests into IGH?

Trish took note of the creature perched on Jess’ shoulder, but right now, what mattered was the woman herself.

The voice that emitted from the dark-haired woman was not one of anger or resentment, which, in another time, Trish might have been relieved about. But the small sound that came with Jess uttering her name was enough to bring tears to her eyes. And she wasn’t a crier. Neither of them was.

She wanted to close the gap between them, wrap her arms around Jess and never let go. But the thought of being rejected, being shoved away, was too great. So, she settled for moving a few steps closer, hands clasped together.

“Jess...I...” Trish started to say, lost for words. “You’re here. How...when..?”

There was no guarantee Jess would even answer her, but she couldn’t shake the look her sister had given upon spotting her. None of this made sense, and that was saying something.

This whole thing wasn't the fault of Trish. Jessica could throw the blame at her and walk away though that was unfair and not true. Things might not have gone this way had they made different choices, but that was the thing about having done something - hindsight was an amazing thing and no matter the wishes for it to be there before something happened was merely a wish. A folly of a dream.

She supposed this had to happen. It was always headed this way from the moment Dorothy had her claws in her daughter, the abuse suffered making her want to feel powerful. And then Jess, broken and scarred who came along with powers that an abuse survivor could only dream about. Saving each other time after time, it was like a lit explosive waiting to go boom.

They could change it, fix it, get by it. Jess was not as blinded by guilt and hate and pain as she was back home. All the memories and experiences that had crashed upon her when she arrived once again had stripped her of that thick armor. Leaving her alone and wanting and cold.

My mom died because of you, Jess's inner voice spoke, she killed yours, while she still has her own. Jess had threatened Dorothy but never attempted to kill her. It's not the same. Dorothy was abusive, but she wasn't a killer. Another inner voice spoke, an internal war. Trish's timely arrival had saved Jess from being shot to death by the police, or possible arrest for aiding a serial murderer. Death could have been preferable, Jess knew that Trish would never forgive herself knowing she could do something but sat idly by.

Her jaw tightened with emotion, a choice being made. She was at the crossroads where her next movement was crucial.

Ignoring the chirp on her shoulder as the fire lizard felt through their bond, Jess strode forward, reaching out for Trish's wrist to pull her the rest of the way and into a tight hug.

This was the moment that would change everything. There was every possibility that Jess would walk away, just as she had done before, after the shock of seeing her had worn off. And honestly, Trish wouldn't blame her. She'd just have to figure out this new place alone, but it was a small price to pay if Jess was gonna be better off without her. As much as she didn't want to be out of her life.

Her breath hitched as Jess suddenly came forward and took her wrist, and then she found herself in a huge. Trish exhaled, the corners of her mouth twitching, before her arms came up and curled themselves around her best friend, being careful of the animal on her shoulder. It was only then did the tears spring from her eyes, silently.

Time appeared to have stopped, and Trish didn't know how long it was before she broke the silence. "Jess, I'm so sorry." Even if she had thought it was the best thing to do in a situation where there was no other way out, the weight of just how much she'd hurt Jess had finally caught up with her, combined with the hug, something she had thought she would never get again.

Trish was soft, soft, and safe. Like old times, Jess found herself easing a little, her shoulders less stiff and her posture a little more relaxed. The time away from her had been good really, letting her wounds heal as much as they could - she knew that if Trish had been here when she first arrived then she would have thrown her out of her life.

    Again.

None of that mattered to her now and for a few shining moments she was able to just forget. Unfortunately everything would come crashing back afterward, leaving her to reel but that was okay.

"I know." Jess's voice was soft, almost breaking. That small snide voice in her head wanted to roar, to tell Trish she didn't want to hear her apologies. That nothing would bring her mom back.

    "I forgive you."

    "I forgive you."

She didn't know what had changed for Jess to forgive her; she knew her sister did not just let things go that easily, especially something as important to her as this. But what mattered for now was that she might just have Jessica back in her life, even after how badly she'd screwed up. There were questions, and things she needed to tell the other woman, but she leaned into the hug for a few seconds more, as though this might be dream, and she'd wake up back in her mother's apartment, alone.

She was still worried about how Jess looked, too, although she wasn't exactly at her best right now either. Perhaps they could work this out together, if she wanted to. Just because Trish was forgivien might not mean that Jess fully wanted her back, and she wasn't going to push it, as much the blonde needed and wanted this.

Jess held onto Trish a little tighter, not enough to bruise or break bones but enough to convey just how much she missed and needed her. Like a lifeline she had desperately sought out all these months.

"I know you probably have a lot of questions." Jess left that open, not saying anything else in case this was an illusion that would break the moment she let go.
