Date: 14th April, Year 110.

Under cover of fading daylight, Niju crept out of the abandoned den of man, which he'd claimed with cocked leg since he had been left stranded in these bleak and barren stone mountains.

He nosed his way down a narrow passageway created so by other empty man dens with impossibly steep, impossibly straight walls. The stone terrain scratched unpleasantly at his paw pads, which he hated almost as much as its grainy, lingering smell.

Hollowed out metal tree stumps lined the edges of the passageway, gleaming and flashing in the dying light. The hot, festering stink of rot that radiated off them threatened to confuse or distract him from the only scent that interested him. Among the paw traffic of animals, he had picked up the peppery trail of a creature like a lynx, but much smaller with a much, much shriller cry. The little cats had become his main diet in the stone mountains, along with scurrying rats and small, whimpering dogs.

It wasn't enough. The points, lines and curves of his bones had started to peek even through his thick pelt. But he refused to leave the stone mountains in search of better food, because he had come to learn their spindly gullies and twisting paths night after night after night. And what if there was less food the farther he dared to stray? What if the smells grew worse? The coarse terrain unbearable on his paws?

He was safer staying put, plus it would make it easier for Nava to find and collect him. Niju was certain, positive, that this was one of his magic tricks. The wise wolf was teaching him a lesson, or punishing him.

Bombarded with bad scents and bad, bad thoughts, he failed to smell it until he had slunk out on to a wider path lined by more man dens. The it, the human, was wobbling in his direction, its eyes glazed, a transparent object full of brown water sloshing in one of its long toed paws. Both it and its, weapon, possibly, oozed an offensive stinging smell.

Niju went rigid with shock. He had never been this close to a human before, having always made a painstaking effort to avoid them here and in his native homelands. Though they looked like weak, sickly creatures with their short jaws and flimsy limbs, he had witnessed them kill many of his clan mates with their thunder making sticks.

“Hey, doggy,” the human greeted him, the words slurring together like a mudslide. It let out a wet belch, which brought with it more of that stinging smell. “Who’s a good girl?”

Dog? Girl? Niju should have fled before the human could kill him with its sloshing object, but his indignation provoked him into holding his ground. He would make the human run from him.

Standing tall, he curled back his taut lips and bared his teeth. A growl like grating rocks rumbled up from the depths of his puffed out chest.

But the human staggered closer and reached out with its free paw as though to touch him on the top of his head. It wanted to strike him! To wound and kill him!

Niju snapped at the looming paw and his teeth severed four of the toes as easily as if they had been the long, flexible stems of weeds. They bounced to the gray ground at the human's hind feet, while it gaped and screamed at the blood spurting in tiny rivers from each of its new stumps. The sharp, briny scent that flooded the air was the most agreeable thing Niju had ever smelt in these stone mountains!

The sun's rays were dwindling, and Inosuke had strayed too far into city territory. It was extremely likely that his trek back to the cabin would be illuminated by moonlight. Not that he minded. The stark absence of demons in this world made the shadows of night a less dangerous place to tread. Inosuke had never feared traveling at night in the first place, but now that the majority of the risks from home were eliminated, he had no reason for even an iota of concern. Wild animals were hardly considered a hazard to a man that had lived the majority of his life in the mountains.

So, as the sun crawled beneath the horizon, setting the landscape awash in hues of orange, Inosuke started his retreat into the wilderness. But just as he was crossing the grassy border that led into the forest, an agonized cry echoed through the valley, snagging his attention. He whipped around, his senses tingling, guiding him straight to the source. It wasn’t a long trip; he needed only to jog in the direction the scream had originated from for a few minutes before he stumbled upon the scene of the crime. Two figures—one a lanky quadruped, the other a vaguely human form (albeit curled into itself and quivering)—stood opposite one another, presumably engaged in conflict.

As he drew closer, the events that were unfolding became clear to him. A wolf posed menacingly in the center of the clearing, fur bristling, blood dribbling from its maw and splattering the pavement with blotches of crimson. A human was crouched beneath it, clutching his arm to his chest while howling in anguish, blatantly in pain.

Having been raised by boars, Inosuke viewed predators as formidable foes, and wolves made the top of that list. To see one baring its teeth at a sobbing man’s hunched form caused his territorial instincts to flare. Not so much out of protectiveness toward his “fellow man,” but more so out of an animalistic urge to prove that he’s the true alpha around here.

With a bark to rival the wolf’s wicked snarling, Inosuke barreled toward it, unsheathing his blades along the way. He was prepared to swing both toothed swords in a crisscross formation, aiming to deal as much damage in a single blow as he physically could. Even if the attack didn't land, he figured the motions would be violent enough to scare the mutt away before it could do any further damage to the innocent civilian crumpled on the ground.

The time had come. Tanaquil, his sorceress companion who had brought him many treats and given him many loving scoldings, was getting ready for full dark before heading to the clanky noise house. Peeve knew that she didn't like the sounds and smells that came from waiting for him to find the best trash cans, and had many thoughts about whether or not he was 'making a mess', so he'd left early to spare her from it.

Walking down the streets and alleys, Peeve trundled through on his short, stubby legs, muttering under his breath to himself as he followed a particular path. "Yes, this way. Not here. Smells wrong." The people gave him those interesting looks as he continued in that vein while trundling through, moving aside quickly, and Peeve puffed out his chest in triumph. Yes, good. They liked this, that's why they let him pass. He was their ruler. King of the streets. The humans moved aside for him out of respect.

The muttering continued before he found the alley he was looking for- the one behind the metal-people hotel. Squealing in triumph, the furry creature positively galloped down the alley to the dumpster and climbed it, the claws of his finger-like claws skittering across the thick metal before he tumbled inside, tail over nose. It didn't take him long to sniff out the bag with the kitchen scraps, and then rip open the bag to expose his prize- a ham bone, long as he was and thick, and still covered in some fat and meat scraps.

A private cheer rang out, echoing around the metal interior as he started to scrabble out, dragging the bone behind him. It was heavy and the work was hard, but that was alright because it was good, tasty work. "I won! Got bone!" he managed, a bit breathlessly, as he walked around the bone to get a better grip.

There was a clang, a door opening, and one of the automatons came out of the hotel, looking his way. Oh, gotta go! Grabbing the bone, he started to rush away, bone held clumsily between his teeth as he bolted. It was too unwieldy to hold that way for long and soon the small creature was back to dragging the bone, but his headway was fine, and the little song he hummed drew more confused- no, happy, he was sure they were happy- looks from the passersby. No one tried to stop him, at least.

That may have been because he smelled like wilted salad, vinaigrette and pea soup, but Peeve would never think of that. He could only smell his ham.

A loud shout and some rumbling cut through his humming, though he didn't stop, and he started to meander that way curiously. Oh. Dog. And unhappy human. Shrugging, he started to pull his bone back the way he had come.

((If you want a vague picture of Peeve, he's here, in the very bottom right corner of the cover image. Sorry, that's the only one I can find!))

(((@Inosuke Hashibira and @Tanaquil: Thanks for joining! <3 I’m sorry about taking ages to reply.)))

The human he had maimed did not attack him, or even attempt to run. It curled up on the ground, wailing and hugging its guttering limb to its body.

Pathetic. This human was nothing like the ones from his homelands, who had been known to kill bears with a single metal fang. Niju would have taken advantage of the injured human’s weakness and feasted on its meat, except the acrid, chemical smell on its breath and flesh made him wary. What if it was poisoned?

There were cases of humans from his homelands putting out poisoned meat in hopes of killing his clan members, or other large carnivores, but Niju had never heard of a human poisoning itself. He wouldn’t put it past this human, though, who seemed extremely stupid.

Niju was about to skulk off and abandon the wretched creature when a bark cut through the air and the blur of a two legged figure hurtled at him, but it was the flash of two large and shiny metal fangs that spurred him into springing out of the way. They whooshed unpleasantly close to his head, and cool air generated by them rippled the heavy ruff around his neck.

He should flee from the two legged blur with the metal fangs. It must have come to defend, or perhaps avenge, its mutilated brethren. This had been Nava’s main argument when Niju had once attempted to convince their clan to prey on a human that had been passing on its own through their homelands. The pack would have easily overpowered one human, but Nava had said more humans would arrive and deal revenge to all wolves with their thunder making sticks.

Niju’s pride refused to let him run. He spun snarling on the newcomer, his back arched and bristling, all four paws pressed into the coarse stone. He raised his muzzle to follow the narrow, upright body and defiantly meet its eyes. He’d been expecting to find a flat, pale fleshed human face, but he glimpsed a snout, flared nostrils, tusks.

His growl broke off into a sharp gasp. He took slow, halting steps back from it, his ears flinched to his skull. Niju wavered between holding his tail high and low, while his quivering lips alternated between a snarl and grimace of fear.

A monster with a human body and a pig’s head. It sounded like something from one of Nava’s foolish and absurd stories, which were not so foolish and absurd now. Had he summoned it to test him? For this reason, Niju neither raced away nor lunged growling and snapping at the grotesque halfbreed.

As he backed away from it stiff leggedly, one of his hind paws struck a dense object and it clattered across the ground. Niju risked a glance over his bristling shoulder and spied a scrappy bone rolling away from a small, squat animal that he would have sniffed at had a monster not been looming over him.

Y110 - April 14th
Blackhaven

It was rare that Nanaki ventured into this part of Pandopolis City. The stories he'd heard, along with rumors and the occasional observation when he elected to pass through... Well, the place was rather unappealing to him. Many years of studying humans, followed by imprisonment and experimentation on by the very same beings, had long ago left him with a rather low opinion of them. Even after his rescue by Cloud and his friends, he'd struggled to understand that maybe... Maybe they weren't as nightmarish as he'd experienced. He had, over time, changed his opinion about the creatures, making lifelong friends along the way. Here in Pandora, he had seen far more decent humans than those best avoided, even made new friends with some. At this point, countless humanoids had also been caught up in the midst, though he had yet to develop an opinion of the strangely human, yet not the same, beings.

However, this corner of town made him wary again. It was here, in this stinking pit of festering filth and garbage, that he witnessed what sometimes he'd find himself thinking as the 'true nature' of two-legged things. Crime, greed, and selfishness ruled the place; though certainly not always only humans or humanoids. But due to the negative descriptions, he tended to give Blackhaven a wide berth, maintaining a respectful distance on instinct, to ensure his own safety. But the recent and sudden departure of his friend and roommate, Sigma, from Pandora, had left him once again without a place to call home. Not that it mattered much, he wasn't exactly suited to the city life, and travelling only at night to minimize how many residents he frightened with his fierce appearance, got boring after a while. He would miss that human though. Perhaps one day they'd meet again.

He likely would not remain in this city for much longer. He'd learned what he'd wanted about Pandora from his brief residence here, perhaps it was time to move on. His wandering thoughts of where to explore next had resulted in his paws bringing him to the rooftops of Blackhaven buildings. Very quiet thuds sounded with every leap across the eaves, muffled by furry and padded paws, and cat-like agile movements. The dancing flame on his tail tip was the only sign that something was actually moving up there, so swift and fluid were the motions of the strange hybrid. The tiniest clinks of the beaded feathers in his mane accompanied each strong leap.

It was the strangled scream of agony, definitely human, which froze him mid-crouch, as he prepared to jump across yet another dingy alleyway. It was only then that his mind snapped back to the present. "Of course there'd be some unlucky victim here of all places." The thought crossed his mind as he realized where he'd ended up tonight. Now this begged another question... To investigate and satisfy his now copious levels of morbid curiosity, or simply brush it off as the norm, which it indeed was in Blackhaven, and continue on his way? The commotion wasn't far away, it sounded almost like it had come from a neighboring alleyway; he deduced as his ears swiveled on the spot, and nose twitched from the new scent of iron on the air.

His intrigue quickly won over caution though, so he nimbly sprang across another rooftop so that he could look upon the scene unfolding below. Crouched on his selected vantage point, silhouetted against the starry night sky above this grimy part of town, he looked down into the shadows below. His single good eye was well adapted to nighttime view, so the situation was laid out before him clear as day. An injured human was buckled over and whimpering in pain, and a wolf with blood on his muzzle was apparently the attacker. What a wild animal like a wolf was doing here in the city, he hadn't the faintest idea. There was also something now attacking the wolf... Some humanoid with a boar's head? Wow, just when he thought he couldn't be more confused by the beings of Pandora, there was always something new to discover. There was also another strange, small creature, seemingly departing the alleyway with a rather... Unappetizing-looking piece of food. Human food always made his stomach extremely queasy.

Nanaki decided that he'd simply observe for the time being. He felt an urge to help the wolf out of this sticky situation, likely due to the similarities in their species. Drive away the threatening creature, and then guide the other furry companion away from the city where he could actually live as nature intended. But at the same time, wild boars were very dangerous animals. And a human-ish one was probably much worse. So the fiery red-orange canine/feline hybrid, swallowed by the shadows, carefully slipped down from the rooftop. He used his tail, twitching to the side, to maintain balance, descending the next level below; an emergency escape stairway in the alleyway. From here he could settle down and more efficiently scope out the commotion, before determining what to do. "How Curious..." He thought to himself.

(Hope ya'll don't mind me hopping in now, didn't wanna wait too long and miss out on the action!)

The tall dog didn't seem to like the two-legged pig very much, and that made sense; pigs weren't supposed to walk like that, or to hold weapons that bit and shined. Tusks were bad enough. Good thing they didn't seem to care about Peeve much, because he could just watch and have his dinner, and then he could tell Tanaquil and Jason about this later, or maybe it would impress one of the lady creatures into giving him more snacks.

As the long dog started his way, Peeve started to drag his bone back, but not fast enough. He managed to dodge the tangle of legs but the bone was caught and skittered away across the pavement, eliciting a curse. "Whurpity! No, mine!" he protested loudly, claws scratching against the ground as his thick, sandy fur fluffed up, and he dashed after his treat. "Bad dog!"

Chittering under his breath, Peeve tried to dive for his bone at the end, before anyone else realized the treasure he had and tried to take it. The scent of another drew closer, rushing Peeve even more as, without a worry in the world, used his limited speed to avoid the gnashing teeth and planted legs, occupied only in regaining his snack. His protections from the unicorn had made him bolder than most small creatures and he knew that it would help him get his prize once again.
