June 3rd, Year 7

Loki realized that Jasnah’s presence distracted him, which never served as a positive quality for the trickster to allow governing his mind or heart. Such an attribute tended to make him a little sloppy and on occasion slightly careless. Under normal circumstances the two traits were not associated with his personality even during the most mundane tasks. Today though proved different.

Only a handful of moments had brought the God of Lies more anticipation than those mere seconds until he finally eliminated the distance between him and Jasnah. He exited the mansion without any short of hesitation and stepped quickly through the front yard. His arms rapped around her waist and lifted her of the ground, ignoring the throbbing sensation coming from his injures.

Suddenly, the entirely world faded into the background and he got the impression of diving into a vivid dream. The Silvertongue closed his bright green eyes and buried his head in her long black hair, seizing the opportunity to breath in her scent. Admittedly, certain kinds of relationships seemed to display an effect on him again. Nonetheless, he still considered himself a lucky man.

Aside from surviving the attack of Thor’s evil doppelganger a couple of days ago, one of the mighty Avengers had ran to his aid as well. Much to his surprise, doctor Banner or the green monster, had helped him with the healing process. The prince had also delegated a load of responsibilities to the employees of the Office of Magical Advancement because he needed a week of rest.

In actuality, for the first time in forever, everything seemed to work in his favor. Consequently, the God of Mischief had began to wonder how long the unexpected string of good fortune would last. Nevertheless, the most important thing was the chance to see this young woman once more. A soft sigh of pure relief escaped from the back of his throat as he placed her back on her feet.

The Asgardian pulled away, with inches separating them. His gaze focused on her while reaching up with his hand in order to cup her cheeks. His face definitely looked paler, his lips appeared deprived from all color, his body was surely weaker. “Brightness.” He whispered in an endeavor to mask his suffering underneath his confidence and charming smile. “I knew you would visit me.”

After being turned away by that one-eyed buffoon of a brother of Loki’s yesterday, Jasnah found herself at the manor yet again, hoping that today, she would be allowed to see Loki. Staying away was difficult, especially after she’d learned of his accident from her colleagues. Storms, she wouldn’t have even known he’d had an accident if she hadn’t asked why Loki hadn’t come into work that day. But no one at the Department had known any details. All they’d been told was that Loki had suffered a grievous injury that would leave him bedridden for a week, according to his doctor.

Jasnah had briefly encountered said doctor on that very same day, when she’d visited to see how Loki was faring. Dr. Banner had met her at the front door, gently but firmly insisting that Loki needed bedrest in a way that brooked no argument. He’d admitted that the injury was serious without giving her more details, but had assured her that Loki would make a full recovery and that she could see him some other time when he was actually awake.

Such news should have put Jasnah at ease, but they only made her feel even more concerned for Loki’s welfare. She’d been unable to concentrate on her research since then, plagued by the same nervous anxiety back when Shallan had been hospitalized. Jasnah’s throat felt tight more often than not, her hands clammy. She couldn’t keep still, resorting to pacing around the office instead. Even Ivory had noticed, remarking on her unusual behavior with fascination. While the scholar in her agreed that her feelings on the situation were highly unusual, she was in no mood to debate the matter until she was sure that Loki was well and truly on the mend.

So when she visited his manor for the third time in as many days, she was determined to see him this time even if he wasn’t awake. She’d prepared arguments in case she encountered Dr. Banner again, and was not above resorting to Surgebinding if she encountered Thor again.

Jasnah’s determination was replaced by surprise when she barely made it to the front gate only to see Loki himself striding through the doors, suddenly gathering her up in his arms like she weighed nothing at all. Jasnah managed to smother her gasp, but clung to his shoulders instinctively. She wasn’t used to being lifted up like this. Storms, she wasn’t used to the way Loki treated her at all. But she felt herself relax when he pressed his face into her hair, when she felt his warmth against the back of her freehand.

He finally set her down, but touched her cheek, as if he didn’t want to pull away just yet. It was such an uncharacteristically sweet gesture, Jasnah couldn’t help but huff in amusement. “Storms, you really must be ill to be acting like this,” she remarked, covering his hand with her safehand. He looked ill too, she realized. His face was so much paler than she was used to, his eyes tired.

“I tried yesterday, and the day before,” she admitted. “But your brother and doctor were both insistent that you need rest.” Trust Loki to be as charming as ever, even when he looked like he was about to fall over. He really shouldn’t have gotten out of bed just to greet her like this. “Now that I actually see what condition you’re in, I agree.”

One of Jasnah’s arms snaked around his waist, her freehand pressing against his upper back to support him. “Come, we’ll both be more comfortable indoors. You can tell me all about how you got yourself so foolishly and so grievously injured once you’re back in bed.”

The display of her amusement proved quite contagious, thus, the Silvertongue smiled a bit in response. Beyond any doubt her mere presence had a positive influence on him. “I can assure you, I am perfectly healthy.” His gaze fell upon her hand which had covered his before listening at her statement regarding her previous efforts to see him. “I know.” He admitted without delay.

“They informed me about your attempts to contact me. A little untimely though.” Ignoring the fact that the young woman had agreed with Thor and Bruce, still Loki rushed to offer an explanation. “That big oaf of a brother and his friend...” His comment trailed off and he shook his head in disapproval. “I must apologize on their behalf.” Then Jasnah suggested returning inside the house.

Despite the acknowledgment regarding the importance of proper rest, still his feet refused to move. “Wait!” His deep voice rose just above a whisper but remained filled with the usual determination. One hand fell around her shoulder while the fingertips of the other trailed over the soft skin of her cheek with remarkable gentleness. He just stared at the lady in front of him for a long moment.

His mouth opened, yet, the words refused to come out. His entire demeanor served as an indicating of an inner conflict. Although the God of Lies wanted to speak about a matter of great importance, still he decided against it. Sharing his thoughts or his emotions had always been a real challenge and, apparently, a near death experience could not change this particular aspect of his character.

Suddenly, a mask of impassiveness was drawn across his features. “The garden is a better choice.” The Asgardian pointed towards a small wooden bench outside the house. “Doctor Banner suggested that the fresh air might prove helpful. I can tell you all about how I got myself so cautiously and so trivially injured while looking at the ocean.” He repeated her last phrase with minor alterations.

Indeed, a couple of days ago the evil version of his older sibling had almost killed him. Back then, with each breath Loki had struggled to remain conscious. At some point he had focused on bringing to his memory the simple things he would miss, if death was to embrace him. One of the images that had surfaced included the way Jasnah’s eyes tended to reflect the golden rays of the sun.

Nevertheless, during their current meeting the trickster recalled a few significant points of their relationship. For example the first kiss. Of course several months had passed since the day when his cold lips had barely touched her knuckles, bidding her farewell after a normal stroll through the crowded streets of the town. It was a chivalrous gesture, brimming with politeness and respect.

He pushed the thoughts away and started to walk. “Would you like to stay for dinner?” He asked.

Thor was reluctant to leave Loki’s side for long, especially when he considered himself at fault for his brother’s injury in the first place. Duty had regrettably called him away a couple of days ago — luckily, Banner had remained behind to watch over Loki — but as soon as Thor had wrapped up with bringing the much-needed white lyrium back to Misty Hollow to repair the barrier, he’d returned to Cascade Bay — and Loki’s side — immediately afterwards. He didn’t think Loki appreciated the way he kept hovering around him, but he’d be damned if he let Loki out of his sight until he’d fully healed.

Of course, Thor did have needs to see to. When nature called, it called. And of course, Loki was nowhere to be found when he returned. So Thor had roamed the mansion in search of Loki, looking for him wherever he could think of — in the kitchen, in the study, even in the other privies — and eventually catching sight of him outside when he passed by an open window.

He paused, spotting someone else with him. Jasnah Kholin, the young woman Loki was sweet on. Thor had met her for the first time yesterday — hadn’t even known for sure what was going on between the two until he’d teased Loki about it afterwards — and he’d soon realized what’d drawn Loki to her. They were both wordsmiths, with sharp wits and even sharper tongues.

Without really realizing what he was doing, Thor leaned on the windowsill and watched them, propping his chin on a fist. Loki looked so much younger when he let his guard down. There was something soft in his expression that Thor hadn’t seen in centuries, and his heart swelled in his chest at the sight of it. It was good to see his brother doing so well in this new world. Good that he’d been pulled here before everything had gone to hel for them, before he’d learned of his true parentage.

Very little of their conversation filtered up to where Thor was watching them on the upper floor, but he caught Loki’s request easily enough. Thor made an excited noise, and in his eagerness to encourage Jasnah to accept — not expecting to be overheard, of course not — he exclaimed, “Would you like to stay forever?”

Oh, that’d sounded loud. Much louder than he’d intended. And now their heads were turning in his direction and they were glaring at him and... whoops.

The God of Mischief heard a familiar voice coming from the house. He closed his bright emerald-colored eyes and sighed in a combination of defeat and discomfort. Frankly, a part of him deemed the unconsciousness of the previous days preferable compared to the current embarrassment. The God of Thunder displayed an inability to show some control.

An identical figure of the trickster appeared beside Thor. Although the doppelganger stayed behind the wall in an endeavor to remain unseen by Jasnah, still the figure stood close enough to the glass for the future king of Asgard to hear. “What in the Nine Realms do you think you’re doing, you big buffoon?” He whispered, irritation echoed in every word.

“Don’t answer that. Making a fool of yourself and me. In front of...” The response to his own question rose instantly, leaving no room for arguments. “And don’t you dare look at me. I’m not really here.” Hopefully, his sibling would realize that the form next to him was just a product of magic. Nevertheless, the God of Lies chose to take no risks.

“Do you know what I’m considering right now?” He paused for a brief moment before finally adding. “Murder.” An impassive expression fell over his face but the maniacal stare spoke of some truth behind his claims. In all honesty, Loki himself failed to decide whether his current behavior served as a facade or he was in fact angry with his brother.

“Since it’s not your place to interfere in my affairs, I suggest you go to a room without windows that overview the garden.” Of course his comment did not sound like a mere advice. “Perhaps you can discuss the important matter of ‘heroism’ with dr. Banner.” Without any delay the illusion vanished with a small flash of light in green and golden hues.

At the same time, the real Loki had turned his head towards the other Asgardian’s direction before refocusing on the young woman. After a few seconds he started to apologize. “My deepest apologies. He insisting on prolonging his visit due to my injuries.”

As soon as their heads turned in his direction, Thor ducked. But he was too tall to hide fully behind the windowsill, everything from his nose and above clearly visible as he peered cautiously in their direction to see if they were still staring at him.

They were, and neither looked terribly happy.

Suddenly, Loki’s voice sounded next to him and Thor lost his balance, stumbling onto his ass. “Surtur’s sweaty balls, would you stop doing that?” he hissed, slowly getting to his feet. This time at least, he managed to wind up standing next to the window, so that he was no longer visible.

“Right, right — look, I’m sorry,” he mumbled after Loki’s threat — and at this point, Thor didn’t even know if Loki was serious or not — shuffling his weight from one foot to the other in embarrassment. “I didn’t mean to overhear, I was just looking for you, and you two were so adorable, I didn’t—”

But Loki interrupted him, suggesting that he avoid the garden and go talk with Banner about heroism (which, knowing Loki, was another jab at Thor overhearing him and Jasnah) before vanishing in the blink of an eye.

“I’m sorry!” Thor called, realizing he... might have apologized a little too loudly. Again. Sighing, he resigned to sticking out a hand from his hiding spot next to the window, waving it in... apology? Greeting? Farewell? He didn’t even know anymore. “Just make sure he gets some rest later!” he added, this time speaking loudly on purpose.

And then he bolted before Loki could send another illusion after him. He didn’t want to get stabbed, thank you very much!

Jasnah’s lips tugged into a small, almost imperceptible smile, but a smile nevertheless. Loki certainly sounded like a poor patient, insisting he was all right when he was so obviously not. “There’s no need to apologize,” she reassured him. But she decided not to remind him that his brother was only worried about him. She was sure he knew already, and was just complaining for the sake of it.

She wasn’t surprised when he asked her to stop, insisted on staying outdoors for some fresh air. But she was surprised at the way he kept touching her, like he was relieved to see her. Like he almost couldn’t believe his eyes that she was here. Which only made Jasnah’s suspicions grow as to how grievous his injury had been, and must still be, if he was acting like he’d feared he might have never seen her again. Even asking her to stay for dinner.

“Remember who you’re talking to, Loki,” she said, voice soft but in a tone that brooked no argument, laying her freehand on his shoulder. “There’s nothing trivial about your injury, or else you wouldn’t have—”

Suddenly, she heard Thor’s voice from somewhere above her head and turned, glancing towards one of the upper windows. Sure enough, there was Loki’s brother. Acting like he’d just been caught red-handed, like the oaf Loki always made him out to be. But he did apologize, and he did ask that she make sure Loki get some rest before vanishing somewhere.

Jasnah huffed a small, silent laugh, shaking her head. “He’s more of a worrywart than my brother is, but I suppose it’s because Elhokar is younger. I’ve noticed that worrying tends to fall on the shoulders of the eldest.”

But she started to lead Loki to the garden all the same, helping him sit on a bench and taking note of every wince and grimace he tried to hide. “Now, tell me how you got injured and I might consider staying for dinner.”

He smiled when she reacted to his brother’s apologies and advice, glancing at her like a teenager boy who had just began to explore the concept of ‘falling in love’. The sound of her laughter echoed in his ears as a graceful song of a rare bird.

Obviously, caring about a person’s welfare was a part of a relationship. Of course he had learn to appreciate the display of affection. More than that, he had actually started to enjoy it from time to time. Although he still refused to admit it.

The aforementioned included those close to him. The God of Lies was not going to act all friendly with everyone, or become too excitable and overly eager to strike up conversations with strangers. On occasion, he wanted to be left to himself.

While the God of Thunder had strove to shield him from any unnecessary pain while growing up, the heir of Jotunheim had protected his reckless brother from his impulsive behavior too. In the end though, Thor had always been the older one.

Now, all he yearned for was her company. So, he chose to speak the truth. “As you wish, my Lady.” His words were slightly dragged out, another sing of his weakened state. “You wish to know how I got wounded. Α warrior falls on the battlefield.”

The trickster sat on the bench with a wince, thankful for not having to stand any longer. “Battling my brother’s evil doppelganger proved far more challenging than I have expected.” The vivid memories of the fight returned, filling his mind.

He struggled to suppress them before his bright green eyes focused at the young lady beside him. “We achieved victory. Nothing else matters.” After a pause, he finally added. “My sole regret would have been not to behold your beauty again.”
